When the Smoke Clears

Editorial Reviews
Album Description
White ushers us into her sound world with a juxtaposition of clashing themes, timbres and colors in the mind’s fear, the heart’s delight (1998), composed specifically for the New York New Music Ensemble. The piece unfolds in five distinct sections, each hinting at a different affect: an eccentric dialogue that pits piano and percussion ("glued" together throughout the piece) against the rest of the ensemble; an enigmatic duet between flute and violin, underscored by a shimmering repeated phrase in the upper register of the piano; and a melancholy section that focuses on long, low notes in the cello. Next comes a long development in the bass clarinet and drums that eventually lands in an extremely high register, making the bass clarinet sound like a wailing tenor sax; this leads to the final section, in which the other instruments re-emerge timidly through a beautiful, apprehensive passage. The quick, harsh refrain from the opening interrupts often, providing an impetus for the sudden contrasts. White explains the sharp disparities between sections as inherently paradoxical: the title, a slightly altered line from the poem "Eruption: Pu’u O’o" by Garrett Hongo, evokes the fusing of anxiety and bliss. White treasures such contradictions, noting that "a single idea or experience can simultaneously inspire both terror and desire."

The oldest piece on the album, When the Smoke Clears (1995/1998), was written with Nancy Zeltsman and her five-octave marimba in mind. In this instance, White not only bestows a personality on each instrument, but she transforms their sounds by creating unusual relationships between them. The clear textures and quirky rhythms emulate Stravinsky, and there is even a short quotation from his Agon in the opening bars. After a brief introduction, the marimba and the violin begin an extended duo, which is at times friendly and at other times fiercely competitive. Eventually the clarinet sneaks in and plays alongside the violin, and for awhile the identical rhythms and dynamics suggest an alchemical combination of the two timbres. Toward the end of a lilting middle section, the piece ascends to its climax, as the marimba becomes more prominent and eventually overtakes the others to play a short solo in its lowest register. As the climax recedes into what the composer calls "a kind of warped organum," the quiet, understated homophony evokes the sense of resolution evoked by the title. White’s mother, to whom the work is dedicated, died just as it was completed. The phrase "when the smoke clears . . . " is one she heard her father utter many times in the following weeks

New Orleans and Atlanta both have mega-cliques holding down their local rap reputations. Well, Memphis, Tennessee, has one too. The Hypnotize Minds label, home of the Three 6 Mafia, has been wreaking havoc on local dancefloors (with tracks like the Mafia's 1996 underground smash, "Tear Da Club Up") since 1993. Veterans of lyrical disorder, this group is well known for its slasher-flick lyrical content (cartoon violence, misogyny). When the Smoke Clears is infested with the Mafia's signature horror-core lyrics, but producers Juicy J and DJ Paul's beats show a growth in individuality. Their intoxicating first single, "Sippin' on Some Syrup," (featuring Texas's UGK) is 2000's Funky Cold Medina, though the Three 6 video isn't as funny as Tone Loc's. There are several other potential hits on the album, including "I'm So High" and "Where da Cheese At." An appropriate collaboration with twisted brothers-from-another-mother Insane Clown Posse also adds to the mayhem. But unfortunately, at 22 tracks, this deviant Dirty South album overstays its welcome. --Vanessa Satten

When the smoke clears is a good album but not three 6's best. They are still miles ahead of everyone else in the rap industry. Best songs are Just Another Crazy Click w/ Insane Clown Posse, Twiztid, Who Run It, Whatcha Know w/ Big Gipp

5 out of 5 stars sippin on some sizzurp (4.5 stars).......2006-08-08

at 22 tracks you can't put this album at the illmatic level of classic as there is obviously some filler in there, but when it's good it's very, very good.

"sippin on some syrup" is one of the best songs in hip-hop of this decade and maybe all time, and it's a classic collaboration with ugk and three 6 (only juicy j and dj paul rap, but they are the two that make three 6 what it is [and by the year 2000 are easily the best rappers of the group as well]). I could write a whole review for that song, but I'll keep it short and at least say if you don't buy this whole album, the least you could do is download that song and bump it in your car.

"I'm so high", "m.e.m.p.h.i.s." (a posse cut, which are always good in three 6's case), "mafia n*ggaz", "where da cheese at" are all high calibur triple 6 songs as well. as a whole this album doesn't have a theme and you can't get close to it like you can other cds, but none of three 6 mafia's albums were ever like that. instead this is a compilation of hits and banging down south songs that three 6 is amazing at making.

the best rap group of the south (tied with ugk) does it again with ridiculous production and hard hitting lyrics. pick this up as well as the other three 6 cds.

5 out of 5 stars The best Three 6 mafia album EVER!.......2006-04-15

I just got this album last week, and to me this is their best CD. It was way better than Most known Unknown and it has better songs than Da Unbreakables. My favorite songs are 44 killers, Sippin on soime syrup, Weak azz b****, Jus like us, Mafia N*****, F*** yall h***, Tounge ring, Barrin you b******, Watcha know, Act like you know me, Touched wit it, M.E.M.P.H.I.S., Just anotha crazy click, Who run it and Put ya signs. If you like their older Cd's you'll love this one.

5 out of 5 stars Michael's True Children.......2006-04-12

It took a long, long time, but mentor Michael Jackson finally broke these guys in and made them his own. Now they demonstrate beyond all doubt that they have truly and deeply absorbed the Old Master's grooves and beats. It must have taken hundreds of hours and much grueling discipline in the Play Room at Neverland Ranch before these young boys finally "got it". But they clearly did "get it" in the end! This is evident from their squeals of childlike glee as they prance across the stage re-enacting their fantasies of a land where no one ever needs to grow old or grow up, where they can play with each other forever in total innocence, blissfully unaware of the icky things adults are alleged to do. Now they are poised to take over where Master Michael left off and will act as shepherds to a whole new flock of young devotees. Bless these sweet young children and may their innocent musical merriment thrive unclouded by the sordid rumors currently swirling around their Master.

2 out of 5 stars Average R&B from a group who can do better.......2007-01-09

After being eighty sixed by R.Kelly after their 1992 debut, Public Announcement was M.I.A. until 1998 when the group returned with the sexually charged All Work No Play album. After a couple of solo albums the group released their CD which is pretty weak. There aren't noteable slow jams on the disc other than their remake of You Don't Have To Cry. More than likely R.Kelly is drinking a juice box with a little girl and laughing.

5 out of 5 stars Public Announcement: When The Smoke Clears.......2006-02-28

This album has everything an R&B album should have. From party tracks like "Put Your Drink Down (Featuring Gitt It Boys)" to smooth baby making music like "Guessing Games" it has it all. Public Announcement has been around since 1998 as R. Kelly's background singers but this album definitely shows that they can hold their own. There's talent in their vocals and the beats are danceable, laid-back, and just plain catchy.

2 out of 5 stars pretty average.......2006-02-05

I was expecting more because I dug that PA Album from 1998,but this Album sounds like Minor League Triple AAA Level takes on R.Kelly at best.there are a few alright joints, but on a whole not much depth here. I expected a bit more.the vocals are cool, but the Production doesn't challenge them too much at all.

2 out of 5 stars More Like Public Embarrassment!.......2006-02-03

Do you remember the group Public Announcement? They were the ones singing behind the Pied Piper himself on the Born Into The 90s album back in 1992. But after just one album, R Kelly ventured off on a successful solo career while the boys were left to fend for themselves. The group put out two albums of their own and went through a lot of changes over the next decade. They did manage to have some modest hits like "Body Bumpin" and "John Doe" during those times. Now in 2006, the current lineup release their third album titled When The Smoke Clears in hopes of bigger and better things. Unfortunately, little progress has been made in all the years they've had to grow.

There are just so many things that kill this album all around. The first thing that any group should NOT do is emulate what their former frontman has done. Well, obviously they didn't get that memo as Public Announcement practically copy everything R Kelly has done over the years. "Stepper Friend" sounds a lot like the stepping songs that R Kelly did for his Happy People album. "What If He Knew" is a virtual copycat of R Kelly's "Down Low" with the falsetto he does on the song. "Guessing Games" sounds suspiciously like "I Wish" in its delivery, "Girl I" and "I'll Be" simply sound like R Kelly-type songs, "Freaky In The Club" is a complete rip of "Snake," and "What's Good" uses similar reggae melodies as those used by Kels. Even songs like the uninteresting sequel "John Doe 2" and a dreadful remake of Rene and Angela's "You Don't Have To Cry" leave you wondering why they even bothered. And a downright ridiculous cut is the song "Let Me."

A few tracks like "Yep," "One More Try," and "Put Your Drink Down" are passable but aren't enough to make this album worthwhile. It's bad enough that the group had to resort to putting out an independent album, but a lot of good albums are released independently. But usually someone who hasn't really manage to make much noise on the mainstream front isn't going to do good on an indie like Boss Entertainment. It may be time for these brothers to start considering a regular nine to five like the rest of us. When the smoke clears, I'm immediately shouting out my own Public Announcement: "Don't Even Think About Buying This!"

5 out of 5 stars PA IS TOP BUTTER.......2006-01-20

Pa new cd is so smooth and hard. This cd has it all from start to finish.Pa best work by far thx. Please go buy this cd is off the chain.

4 out of 5 stars Presence is an amazing band.......2002-04-10

My friend had bought me this album for my birthday a few weeks ago, and wasn't sure if I was going to like it because I've never heard their music and they are a local band. (They're from Tallahassee, FLorida, my hometown too.) The music itself is pretty simple but it is still good, but the lyrics caught me by surprise on the quality of it.

'Tonz of Fun' (song 4) was quite funny because it's about someone getting drunk, not remembering what happened the night before, and finds himself in bed with one of the fattest girls they knew. (And what makes it even more interesting is that it's a true story expirienced by one of the band members themselves- atleast that's what one of my friends tell me.) There are some serious songs like 'Van Down By the River' (song 12) and 'One Final Breath', (song 3) which is written and dedicated to people they knew who had died. 'Van Down By the River' I found myself engrossed to it because it's such a lovely song and the lyrics are beautiful.

'No Progress' (song 5) is definitely a song people should hear. It's written about kids killing kids in schools and how the media blames music for it. 'Devotion' (song 9) is one of my favorite songs on the album. It makes you kind of sad when you listen to Slim sing about how he longs for his ex girl, but it's amazing how he spills his emotions into his lyrics.

The rest of the songs on this album are just as good, and if you like songs with good lyrics and vocals, get this album.
