5 out of 5 stars Cantatas on Set. Vol. 8 is Great........2005-12-20

At last, Koopman's re-release of the 3-Disc Set Complete Cantatas Vol. 8 is available on Amazon.com. But, where is the description of what's on it? I will provide that below.

Firstly, I must include this series of re-releases on Koopman's own label, Antoine Marchand (though more costly than when on Erato in the 90s), contains the very well interpreted music of Bach as well as valuable scholarly research of Bach's Cantatas by Professor Christoph Wolff, a leading Bach scholar. Stephen Keavy leads the trumpet section performing the tasking parts in BWV 77 and 90 on this set.

Cantatas on set:

BWV 77 Du sollst Gott, deinen Herren Lieben

BWV 81 Jesus schläft, was soll ich hoffen?

BWV 83 Erfreute Zeit im neuen Bunde

BWV 89 Was soll ich aus dir machen, Ephraim

BWV 90 Es reisset euch ein schrecklich Ende, ihr sündlichen verächter, hin

BWV 109 Ich glaube, lieber Herr, hilf meinem Unglauben!

BWV 167 Ihr Menschen, rühmet Gottes Liebe

Enjoy the Musik!

3 out of 5 stars Skillful musicianship, but ..........2005-12-26

I liked the sound of Marianne Beate Kielland's voice and musicianship in this same group's CD of the Bach B Minor Mass that came out some time ago. And I looked forward to this collection of solo alto cantatas by Bach. But I must say that I quickly tired of the sound of Ms Kielland's voice, largely because, although she handles it well, it has a white, almost hooty sound that becomes tiresome fairly quickly. At times, in fact, I could imagine I was listening to a male countertenor, not much of a recommendation in my opinion.

Still, there are some lovely things on this disc, mostly from the orchestra, the Cologne Chamber Orchestra under the direction of its long-time director, Helmut Müller-Brühl. Special mention must be made of the organist, Harald Hoeren, for his bits in 'Vernugte Ruh, beliebte Seelenlust' BWV 170 where the organ comes out of the continuo group and acts rather as a solo (obbligato) instrument, and even more so in the organ-concerto-like 'Sinfonia' (overture) to 'Gott soll allein mein Herze haben' BWV 169. Also, the oboe d'amore player, Christian Hommel, deserves special mention.

No texts are provided, but they can easily be obtained by a little searching on the Internet.

So, although there is something to enjoy here, I think I won't be coming back to this disc very often.

3 out of 5 stars Re-issue of Rare German Vocal Repertoire from the 17th and 18th Centuries.......2006-06-04

As with all those recordings on which Rene Jacobs stars as countertenor, the main problem here is his voice: Although Jacobs proves himself to be delightfully musical as far as interpretatory detail is concerned, his timbre is cold and hard, and as soon as the pitch gets higher, his falsetto sounds pressed and extremely unnatural. Today, he is, in Europe, one of the most successful conductors of early music repertoire, but his days as a singer were over as soon as the art of countertenor began to produce singers whose voice sounded natural and easy.

The CD in question (“German Church Cantatas and Arias”) is a re-issue. The major portion was recorded in October, 1979, at St. Stephen’s Church in Melsen, and originally released as an LP (ACC 7912; later as a CD ACC 77912D). The last three tracks, consisting of Telemann’s cantata “Ihr Völker hört”, was recorded at the Chapelle Royale of the Protestant Church in Brussels in June, 1981, and originally appeared on the Accent LP devoted to Telemann’s “Harmonischer Gottesdienst” (ACC 8020; never issued as a CD).

The recording itself has its pros and cons. On the one hand, the instruments, played by the Kuijken Consort (S. Kuijken, J. Van der Meer, violin; W. Kuijken, A. Pols, M. Tindemans, A. Glatt, viola da gamba; R. Kohnen, organ; M. Aerts, violone; K. Junghänel, theorbo) and, for the additional Telemann cantata, by the Parnassus Ensemble (B. Kuijken, transverse flute; R. Van der Meer, cello; J. Huys, harpsichord) have been captured exceedingly clearly with a broad stereo panorama. In particular, the chamber organ has been very clearly positioned; and on “Ihr Völker hört”, the flute, positioned to the extreme left of proceedings, can be wonderfully heard. On the other hand, Jacobs’ voice, with all the disadvantages already mentioned, seems somehow superimposed on the whole, recorded, as it is, very closely, almost as though it had been taped separately and mixed in to the instrumental accompaniment later. The balance is not always quite what it should be: particularly on Johann Christoph Bach’s “Ach, dass ich Wassers g’nug haette” there seems almost to be competition between the voice and the instruments. Personally, I found listening over headphones slightly more satisfactory than in front of loudspeakers.

The music itself is unusual and fascinating. Dietrich Buxtehude (1637 – 1707) was an organist in Luebeck in the North of Germany, one of his main claims to fame being that the young J. S. Bach took time off to go and listen to one of his evening concerts. Buxtehude’s music has been steadily discovered by the early music movement; I currently have organ works played by Piet Kee on Chandos Chaconne and harpsichord works played by Mitzi Meyerson on ASV Gaudeamus. The aria “Muss der Tod denn nun doch trennen”, written on the death of Buxtehude’s father, is an extremely sombre piece accompanied almost exclusively by trembling viols producing a sound that is both ravishing and disturbing, at least on a first hearing. The contrast to “Jubilate Domine” could scarcely be greater: this second Buxtehude piece is joyful and triumphant and could not demonstrate the other side of the coin more forcefully.

Johann Christoph Bach (1642 – 1703), one of the great Bach family, is best known for his aria “Ach, dass ich Wassers g’nug haette”, a lamentation accompanied by viols, violone, organ and theorbo. Because of the balance problem mentioned above, I still prefer the first version of this that I ever heard, that by Henri Ledroit and the Ricercar Consort on the rival Belgian label Ricercar.

The Telemann pieces are rare, but demonstrate his high baroque style with alternating fast and slow movements and music that wonderfully illustrates the psalm texts that he was setting.

5 out of 5 stars Spurious Bach, but Still Wonderful Music.......2006-07-03

In recent years, several cantatas that had been included in the catalog of Bach's works (in German, BWV) have been determined to have been written by other composers. These "spurious" or "apocryphal" Bach cantatas are now typically excluded from the integral recordings, for example, those of Harnoncourt and Rilling. That's too bad, because several of these works are extremely attractive and enjoyable. This Naxos recording contains two such cantatas: "Meine Seele ruhmt und preist" by Melchior Hoffman (formerly BWV 189) and "Ich weiss, dass mein Erloser lebt" by Telemann (formerly BWV 160). It's good to have these pieces readily available again in fine performances led by Bach specialist Helmut Muller-Bruhl. The disc also contains excellent performances of two real Bach cantatas (BWV 35 and 55), but it's the Hoffman and Telemann that make the disc stand out.

If you're looking for other spurious Bach cantatas, you'll find "Schlage doch, gewunschte Stunde," also by Hoffman (formerly BWV 53), beautifully performed by countertenor Robin Blaze on a Hyperion disc entitled "German 17th Century Church Music." BWV 15, 141, and 142 are available on a cpo disc, "Apocryphal Cantatas II."

        5 out of 5 stars Stellar Performance--Intimate and Bold.......2001-05-22

This recording of Bach's Alto Cantatas predates "Arie Amorose" by 3 years but one would think they were recorded together. The same warm, rich sound and tremendously musical collaboration between conductor, orchestra and singer make this a truly valuable addition to any CD collection.

Monica Groop brings her rich, warm voice to this Bach like few others could. I think these are among Bach's most beautiful cantatas. It is interesting that he set them for the alto voice, perhaps suggesting he liked this voice the best. I think he would be pleased with Ms. Groop's performance.

I can't stress enough how the balance of players make this a complete performance. The high level of interaction of singer and orchestra is rarely achieved and when it is, it is a good thing! The obligati intertwine with the vocal lines seamlessly, yet neither overpowers the other nor do they fight for preeminence: it is simply RIGHT.

The recording engineers at Finlandia Records have found a way to bring fully balanced and rich sound to this recording, bringing the listener in, but stuffing us amidst the ensemble, wondering if the recording was done in a carpeted studio like so many other recordings today. The resonance and atmosphere are just right and quite fitting to this worthy cast.

Ms. Groop also takes us with her as she unleashes beautiful sound upon beautiful sound. She phrases musically and brings forth every delicate detail of these lyric compositions without ever approaching "cute". Seemingly without ever needing to break for a breath, Groop handles coloratura passages with accuracy and beauty. The recitatives are also amazing to me-in that I don't want to skip past them to the arias! Ms. Groop makes them a continuous part of the music, phrasing even through rests leaving one to feel that perhaps the ears have fooled us: was there really a break in the vocal line there?

I can't decide which of these Cantatas are my favorite-I love them all. The tempos are lively and fit. Ms. Groop once again shows us that it is not necessary (or wise?) for a singer to pare down his/her voice to perform Baroque music. This is real singing of the highest caliber. I can't wait for the future recordings from this artist. Her career should take off for the heights. When was the last time we knew a Carmen, Marguerithe or Melisande also excelled in Handel, Arie Amorose and Bach Cantatas?

        5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2001-01-07

This is one of those recordings that you run across once in a while and which truly stand out when discovered. The CD won a "Best of the Year" award from Finnish broadcasting, and for good reason. To begin with, the three Bach cantatas chosen, 35, 169 and 170, are among his most beautiful. Then, Monica Groop has a voice as striking and transparent as Battle's, and the organ continuo has a crispness which is rarely heard in life or on CD. The recording engineers did their job to perfection. The result is an unusually precise, sensitive and warm work. I highly recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Johann Sebastian Bach in merry mood........2001-11-14

It's worth a long search to obtain and enjoy these works, even if only for the rare chance to hear Bach in merry mood. Of course it is not his fault that about half of his secular cantatas have been lost. Amongst those that survive, two of those included here in matchless performances from the early 1960s conducted by Karl Forster, will bring smiles to your face and dance steps to your feet. Amongst the singers, Fischer-Dieskau and Lisa Otto are especially lively, and Fritz Wunderlich's singing is little short of miraculous. It is in Cantata 208 that the aria known as "Sheep May Safely Graze" occurs.

Cantatas by three of Bach's older contemporaties are also included, all sung by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. Everything is in good stereo, recorded in Berlin locales, and digitally remastered in 1998.

        5 out of 5 stars Bach's "Counter-tenor" Cantatas.......2000-03-15

Bach's so-called alto cantatas have found many attractive interpreters in modern musical history--Dame Janet Baker, recently Monica Groop, counter-tenor Rene Jacobs, and now German counter-tenor Andreas Scholl. Like most new classical artists, Scholl is hyped by the record companies in the grand tradition of rock stars--see his Decca release "Heroes," with its sprawling, cliched photographs (the artistry is sound, however). In this recording of Bach's alto cantatas, Scholl proves himself a worthy exponent of the counter-tenor revolution. With a voice of both lyricism and stylish sensibility (not quite Derek Lee Ragin, but who could be?), Scholl excells in Bach's beautifully constructed cantatas. The coloratura is well-executed and rendered with appropriate insight into Baroque practice, although the all-too-common aspirate delivery is not altogether avoided. In general, this is an important release from an increasingly important artist--one can only dream of Scholl's reading of the Vienna "Orfeo ed Euridice."
