I actually don't have this cd. but Jacquet de la Guerre is an excellent composer (I say every bit as good as her male counterparts). I've seen Byron Schenkman live (and maybe Margriet?). He/they play in the Seattle Baroque group. he's an excellent interpretor and virtuoso at the harpsichord.

    4 out of 5 stars C'est La Guerre.......2002-02-01

This is a very nice recording of baroque violin sonatas by one of the few known female composers of that time.
The pieces are very good, not the standard forgettable fare that you sometimes find with obscure baroque composers.
The performances are on period instruments and are energetic and expressive, doing justice to this interesting music.

I usually don't review CD albums at Amazon, but this one is absolutely superb. It is one of the very best introductions to 17th century music by women composers. There are many wonderful albums available now focusing mostly on vocal music by 17th century women, for instance, by Barbara Strozzi, Chiara Margarita Cozzolani, or Isabella Leonarda, and others, but more instrumental music needs to be recorded. This is a grand start to balancing vocal and instrumental and filling in some of the gaps. A much appreciated album and a real treasure. The cover illustration, by the way, is a detail from a painting by the much acclaimed 17th c. Italian woman artist, Artemisia Gentileschi.

1 out of 5 stars Amateur music, amateur ensemble, excellent singer.......2002-07-01

I'm not sure this music deserves a CD: not interesting, often boring, it's a second class repertoire. Anyway, it could be interesting, but the ensemble doesn't help: "ill-tempered cello", harpsichord without phantasy, honest fiddlers. The solo harpsichord pieces are a tribute to boredom.
But - Roberta Invernizzi is a very good singer, always "intonada", deeply expressive. I suggest to look for CDs of this intelligent Italian singer (I own Neapolitan music with Capella di Turchini, quite good), but not this.
If you want to discover new musics, try this CD - if you want music for your ears, avoid. it.

5 out of 5 stars Music for Everyone.......2002-05-24

It is rather a rare collection of music composed by only women in the late 17th century, the baroque period, in Europe. It is actually recorded in a church in Italy. Every music is so smooth and warm. The harmony of strings - violin, cello, harpsichord - is rounded and beautiful. Soprano is very cute. If you close your eyes, it will travel you back to a variety of scenes in the baroque era that you can imagine. All music are so natural and pure that everyone can enjoy at anytime. I just loved it.
