Love this collection.......2007-03-15

This is such an amazing collection performed by one of my favorite pianists. The price is unbeatable, and the interpretations are exquisite. Maria Tipo performs with incredible control---each note is placed exactly where she wants it. Her voicings in these contrapuntal works are astounding. I have performed a great deal of Bach, and have had many many students study Bach over the years, and I still turn to Tipo's Bach recordings for fresh insights and inspiration. Sometimes her rubato is a little excessive for my taste, but her tonal quality, her phrasings, and her understanding of counterpoint are breath-taking. I don't play everything like Tipo would, but I certainly respect her for the great beauty and artistry she achieves in her playing. Her Goldberg Variations recording is my favorite recording of this work. I also really love hearing the Little Preludes and Little Preludes with Fugues played as they should be played---with energy, expression, exciting tempos, voicing, etc. It gives my younger students who are studying these works a high standard to achieve in their own performances. The Partitas are filled with expression and life (I especially love her interpretation of the E-Minor Partita---listen to how clearly she articulates the fugue subject in the Toccata every time it appears).

Overall---great recording worth far more than they are charging!

for me, Maria Tipo is the only pianist who performs Bach unaccompanied piano in the most satisfying manner; a notch above Andras Schiff and the more modern departure from the unemotional and dated approach of Glenn Gould.

The Neopolitan Horowitz.......2007-03-08

When Tipo began appearing in the US, the papers hailed her as 'The Neopolitan Horowitz'. Of course, her style is far removed from Horowitz', but the amazing technical facility certainly impressed audiences.

These recordings, made show what the fuss was about. Her Scarlatti is more whimsical and 'brilliant' than her later recordings. This disc, which she recorded in 1955 in a mere 4 hours, was hailed by Newsweek magazine as "the most spectacular record of the year".

In the Mozart concertos she really shines, giving performances that sparkle and constantly make happy discoveries in the music without being in the least precious.

The sound quality is reasonable.

A mixed collection -- some stunning, some fair.......2003-07-30

I purchased this disc to get a copy of Alexander Serdar's astonishlngly beautiful performance of the Andante Spianato and Grande Polonaise. I heard that recording on his EMI debut album which is currently out of stock, but picked this disc up in order to obtain it. I also reasoned that the other selections might be thoughtfully chosen recordings given that the recording company was wise enough to include Serdar's performance.

Indeed, some of the recordings are incomparably beautiful. What stands out most are Serdar's Andante Spianato and Grande Polonaise, Nelson Goerner's Barcarolle, Dmitri Alexeev's Waltz in E minor, Leif Ove Andsnes's Mazurka in A minor and Maria Tipo's Nocturne in C# minor. Serdar bowls me over with his ability to create a singing line. I do not know why he hasn't been more celebrated. The beauty of his tone is breathtaking. Similarly, Goerner, Andsnes and Alexeev play Chopin with a beautifully caressing tone. In all cases, their pedaling is masterly. Tipo's C minor nocturne is totally involved. Her piano is a bit brighter and therefore less warm, but the playing is vividly compelling. Tsimon Barto rounds out the welcome recordings on this disc by giving us a moving account of the E minor Prelude

Some of the other recordings were either less interesting or downright disappointing. Cecile Ousset plays the Ballades probably in a French tradition of Chopin playing -- somewhat emotionally cool, though she pulls off the finales of both the first and second ballades with incredible aplomb. Weissenberg plays a nocturne and the famous E major etude, but his touch is much too percussive for this music. Maria Tipo's C minor nocturne seems just a bit self-indulgent. She takes a very slow tempo and seems to lose some concentration. I would have welcomed a warmer piano tone for this piece instead of the bright piano that her recording was made on.

I recommend this recording both as a compilation of soothing Chopin and as an opportunity to hear a variety of artists bring their perspectives to Chopin's music. I bought this disc simply for Serdar's Andante Spianato and Grande Polonaise, and found other pieces to enjoy. If you enjoy Chopin played in a singing legato way, there is much to enjoy here.

Maria Tipo plays Clementi.......2007-06-13

If you bother Googling Muzio Clementi you will find how ungenerous and overly critical the historians could be. They may grudgingly admit Clementi's virtuosity, his contribution to piano making, teaching, conducting and other worthwhile endeavors, but they may also totally dismiss 110 sonatas he composed as just the educational material. The historians are eager to report that he was married three times (like somebody cares), and that his final years were not exciting (so what?). This brings me to the point: while it is always easy to trash someone's life's accomplishments, it is not equally easy to understand and appreciate someone's creative work and other contributions.

I thus embark on this review with fresh eyes.

Maria Tipo is a distinguished pianist of a superb pedigree. You should Google her also. She performs Clementi beautifully, hauntingly, with a dramatic dynamic range and much feeling. I normally do not like totally interpreted pieces, since I like the freedom to create my parallel musical world while listening to the performers. Just like in the Japanese paintings, empty space has an important role in music, I believe. Having said that, I do not miss the empty space when Maria Tipo plays. My favorite piece on this recording is Sonata in D major, Op. 40 No.3. How can anybody say that this only has "educational value" is beyond me.

So, treat yourself with this fine recording! It is never too late to pay respect to Muzio Clementi!

Great recording.......2006-03-22

The thing I liked the most about this recording is that it allowed me to hear the Nocturnes in a completely different way from what I am used to hearing. Some gorgeous voicings, and some incredibly delicate moments. As a piano teacher, I like my students to hear several interpretations of each piece---and I love having this as a companion and a foil to Rubinstein's benchmark recording. I wouldn't play everything as Tipo plays, but I applaud her for her insights!

The ultimate Romantic "Nocturnes" set.......2003-10-10

I can't let a negative review of this wonderful set by one of the most underrated pianists of the last century go by unchallenged. Yes, she performs these at an even slower pace than does Arrau on his Philips set, but all the better to showcase her exquisite tone, touch, and flawless use of the sustain pedal. Tipo's style is surely wrong for some music, but for the Chopin Nocturnes...? I can think of no other compositions that so thoroughly deserve the label "Romantic." These are Romantic performances like no other, the direct opposite of Rubinstein's tossed-off stereo version. I like the Arrau and Moravec sets too, but Tipo's is my favorite.

No. Just no........2003-03-10

Chopin's nocturnes are some of the most beautiful pieces of music ever composed; this recording does not begin to do them justice. I am glad to see that Amazon is no longer stocking this item because I bought it many years ago and have regretted it ever since. Some recordings are worth owning (especially "complete" sets) for reference, just to know what a piece sounds like. That may be the only reason to buy this album, but recordings I buy for this reason have to be unabrasive, objective, and at a certain standard. When I listen to Tipo play, I start hating the nocturnes-- definitely not the right reaction. Some of the performances are decent, but many are sheer murder to listen to. They are over-sentimentalized, self-conscious, and boring.

Listen to the Rubinstein collection recording of the nocturnes; it is missing two posthumously published nocturnes (c sharp minor and c minor), but you can be filled in on those from other recordings (for example, the film soundtrack to The Pianist).

Outstanding value on early Rubenstein.......2002-10-07

I listen to a fair amount of piano music but I'm no expert. I had only heard Rubenstein from his later years and did not realize what all the fuss was about until I heard him on this CD. The recordings are live and just full of fire and musical genius -- Rubenstein is still more restrained and refined than many, but unlike a lot of his later work his restraint does not dominate or mar the passion and sentimentality. The recording quality is not what you would get from a modern recording, but is adequate for some sheer sensory enjoyment.

Michelangeli's rendition of the Chopin Berceuse is the best I have ever heard. 'Nuff said!

I gave this 5 stars even though I don't like the Tipo or Cziffra cuts at all. My reason is that the rest of the recording is still a great value at $$$ -- the two cuts I didn't like are only @ 7 minutes or so.
