5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC - INSPIRED PERFORMANCES.......2007-04-23

Let me center my remarks on the 2nd piano concerto. May I say, with pun intended, this performance is "2nd to none!". I have had a few versions of the 2nd piano concerto over the past fifty years. In those years I might have listened to no more than three times. Never has this music "grabbed" my ear. THIS PERFORMANCE HAS CAUSED ME TO LISTEN TO IT AT LEAST FIVE TIMES IN THE LAST MONTH SINCE RECEIVING IT.

4 out of 5 stars Pletnev is an amazing pianist.......2006-01-13

It's true. Pletnev can really capture the passion when playing the piano. And with this 2-disc set of Tchaikovsky's piano concertos, you can't go wrong with anything.

The First Piano Concerto is by far one of the finest I've ever heard, along with the versions including pianists Daniel Barenboim and Constantine Orbelian. Maestro Fedoseyev and the Philharmonia Orchestra do a stupendous job of backing up Pletnev. There are no wrong notes, no over-blaring of the brass, and best of all, no overpowering the lyrical sounds of the piano. The finale in the third movement might be a bit too quick, but it doesn't matter, as long as this rendition of Tchaikovsky's first piano concerto gives out a strong and inspired performance.

The Concert Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra is an attention-grabber. It sounds serene and melodic, the typical Tchaikovsky. It is less well-known than P. Concerto no. 1, but it has the same russian flair for expression. The solo in the first movement is to die for, and the second movement has its special charm of taking people's breath away. An A+ for this one.

Hearing the original version of the 2nd P. Concerto instead of the Siloti version has given me mixed feelings. For the good, the violin and cello solos in the 2nd movement are touching, and the piano and orchestra are in top form. For the bad, the tempi seems to be very random at some points. The fast parts, for example, don't seem very fast at all.

Since I don't listen to the unfinished 3rd that much, I don't have anything to say about it. All in all, the sound quality is super, and the low price is exceptional. It's a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars CONCERTO NO.2 NOT THE SILOTI EDITION.......2003-08-06

The Concerto No.2 is NOT the bowdlerized Siloti edition--not only does the label clearly state that the original edition is played, but the violin and cello solos removed from the Siloti edition are clearly audible to anyone who has really listened to this recording. I don't even LIKE Concerto No.1, and this performance bowled me over--highly recommeded--and, at this price, an absolute STEAL!

5 out of 5 stars PERKINS IS WRONG!.......2003-08-06

Mr. Perkins is absolutely wrong about this set! In the first place, Concerto No.2 is NOT the hatcheted Siloti edition--did Mr. Perkins listen to this recording at all? Not only does the label clearly state that Concerto No.2 IS the original version, but the violin and cello solos missing from the Siloti edition are clearly present in Pletnev's recording! I highly recommend this set to anyone--I don't even LIKE Concerto No.1, but I found myself bowled over by this performance!

1 out of 5 stars Sorry to be negative, but..........2003-02-01

Pletnev hits all the notes, but misses the Russian soul and the Romantic fire. The performance of the Second Piano Concerto in particular is, at best, a train running willy-nilly downhill (seemingly without a conductor--not to mention that it's the hatcheted Siloti edition). I suppose I have been spoiled for any other versions of the concerti by listening to the absolutely miraculous interpretations by Igor Zhukov and the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra (now sadly out of print). It's a good thing this set is relatively inexpensive, because then I felt no qualms about simply throwing it away.

4 out of 5 stars Mostly Magnificent Menuhin, with a Few Reservations.......2004-01-06

The recent trend toward classical box sets focusing on the performer instead of the composer (see my reviews of the various DG/Decca "Original Masters" sets) continues with EMI's new "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist." Sure EMI's past sets have showcased individual performances by Samson Francois, Eugen Jochum and Rudolf Kempe to name a few, but it was always under the heading of a given composer's works, and in the cases mentioned above, to Chopin's piano pieces, Bruckner's Symphonies and Strauss' Orchestral Works respectively. Therefore, this Menuhin collection is the first of EMI's "Budget Box Sets" to showcase a performer playing the works of a variety of composers.

As Menuhin was an EMI recording artist for an incredible 68 years (1931-99), his performances for the label number in the hundreds. With so much music from which to choose, this 10-disc set aims "to highlight some of those alternative versions, including recordings that have not been easily available since the days of LP and others that have never previously appeared on CD." Therefore, the obvious mainstream, easily attainable recordings are omitted here -- for example, the Beethoven/Mendelssohn VCs with Furtwangler, the Elgar VC with the composer conducting, and the Bruch/Mendelssohn VCs with Susskind and Kurtz.

However, a lot of this material has been on disc before on titles which the serious collector most likely already owns. Most of the Bach is currently available as part of the Bach "Budget Box Series" title. The Bruch, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Vivaldi VCs were all available in the now out-of-print 2CD EMI Seraphim series. The Elgar and the Walton are still available in the "British Composers" series. And perhaps most annoyingly, the previously unpublished Beethoven VC and Tchaikovsky "Serenade melancolique" (available as a single disc), and the Beethoven Romance No. 2 (available on an EMI Encore title) were both reissued just a few months back.

But let's focus on the positive, which are the other rare performances, the most significant being the never before reissued 1954 performance of Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 4 with John Pritchard and the Philharmonia. Other elusive recordings include Viuextemps and Paganini VCs with Fistoulari, Lalo and Saint-Saens works with Goossens, and excellent Berg and Bartok accounts with Boulez. Though I'm delighted at their inclusion, of lesser importance is a 1965 Bartok VC No. 2 with Dorati -- his mono EMI with Furtwangler and an earlier account with Dorati on Mercury Living Presence are far superior. Also, neither the Sibelius (Boult, 1955) nor Nielsen (Woldike, 1952) Concertos are truly Menuhin's cups of tea.

My last complaint has to do with the packaging. I know I'm being rather trite but it seems that EMI has taken the "slim" out of slim, paper-sleeved box sets with their latest batch of releases. Both this title and the new box of Liszt Orchestral Works by Masur are noticeably thicker than previous EMI sets featuring a similar number of discs. A minor point, but us serious classical collectors need every centimeter of space on our increasingly crowded CD shelves, not to mention the amount of wasted packaging.

Overall though, despite the fact that "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist" is not as essential a reissue as its counterparts in the "Original Masters" series, it is a delightful set that most collectors will thoroughly enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Pleasurable Mix.......2005-10-29

I still consider myself a rock music fan, but received this CD/album as a Christmas gift in 1995, and have listened to it in my car countless times. It contains a very nice assortment of familiar arrangements performed brillantly by various orchestras. Even if the title doesn't ring a bell, chances are you've heard these songs before and can connect with them. My wife's favorite is "Canon" (she's a diehard romantic) and I'm partial to "Fanfare" (Masterpiece Theater's old theme). Guaranteed to mellow you out while stuck in rush-hour traffic.

5 out of 5 stars Good for beginners........1999-01-16

For those of us who think we would like classical music but have no idea where to start or what to buy, this is a good CD. I now have a small classical music library which gives me a great deal of pleasure, but this was one of my first selections. I still enjoy it. I recommend it to friends who are beginning to enjoy classical music and need a place to start.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Performance from Pianist and Orchestra Alike.......2004-06-24

Konstantin Scherbakov is a Russian pianist who has of late made many recordings, primarily of Russian music, for Naxos and Marco Polo. His recording of the Shostakovich 'Preludes and Fugues' is among the very best as is his recording of Shostakovich's first piano sonata. He has also recorded Rachmaninov brilliantly; he had come to international attention in 1990 when he played Rachmaninov's complete works for solo piano in Italy and garnered an enthusiastic endorsement from none other than Sviatoslav Richter. In the several years that he has been recording for Naxos/Marco Polo I have been increasingly impressed with his breadth and depth of musicianship.

Here, of course, we have performances of one of the most-recorded piano concertos ever written, Tchaikovsky's First. Practically every major pianist of the twentieth century (and many not-so-major ones) have recorded this concerto, and there are many fine performances. This one is able to hold its own amongst the very best. Not only does Scherbakov give a brilliant performance, he is given a sensitive and flexible accompaniment by Dmitri Yablonsky and the Russian Philharmonic. Particular commendation go to the principal oboe and flute, and even more to the principal cello and violin, all of whom have important solos in both concertos recorded here. Yablonsky manages transitional passages with skill and suavity; listen, for instance, to the second movement of the First Concerto: the transition to the quick middle section begins as naturally as to be almost unnoticed, not something that every conductor can pull off, and the same is true for the gearing back down for the return of the opening andante. Scherbakov has lightning-fast leggiero passages but also has thunderous octaves that never become clangorous. And in the midst of these technical displays he also makes music. As I've stated in earlier reviews, Scherbakov's sound does not seem to vary from piano to piano, a sign of a great player.

The Third Concerto has a marvelous first movement, played with great brilliance here, but is let down by the second and third movements, each completed after Tchaikovsky's death by his friend, Sergey Taneyev. It is no wonder that this concerto is rarely played. Still, it is given a good performance here by soloist and orchestra and certainly anyone who loves Tchaikovsky's music - and only snobs don't, I suspect - it should be in every collection.

The CD is a hybrid SACD (mastered in DSD) and can be played on either regular CD player or 5.1 multichannel surround sound equipment. The sound is rich and full in both formats. This recording has a plain audio CD (non-SACD) release as well.

Recommended.

    4 out of 5 stars 25 Classical Heartbreakers.......2006-11-29

Although these are popular and widely heard compositions (that's why I gave it 4 stars) they are very soothing when you want to mellow out. However, I can't understand why the title reads '20 Classical Heartbreakers' when there are 25 pieces.

    5 out of 5 stars Russian soul.......2007-01-23

I have been looking for this recording after wearing out a tape that I had and played constantly while driving. What impressed me about this oft recorded piece was the marriage of a Russian conductor and a Russian pianist; the brilliance and the pathos and the soul of this piano concerto were brought to life by these Russian artists interpreting a most Russian composer. I am looking forward to hearing this incredible recording again...and again...and again.

3 out of 5 stars Good recording but the interpretation lacks energy.......2002-07-25

I bought this CD in the early 90's primarily because this had Tchaikovsky's 3rd piano concerto. This piece is rarely recorded and at the time of my purchase it was one of the few digital recordings available. I was also curious about how Rostropovich would do Tchaikovsky's first P.C.

First, the sound quality. This is one of the first releases that Sony used 20-bit recording technology. The sound supposedly is fuller than ones with lower resolution. But somehow, in this recording, the sound is a bit too "round" and some of the edginess, especially the strings and the horns, are a little smoothed out. It feels like there is a thin veil glossed over the original sound.

I like the performance of the 3rd concerto. This one-movement work has a good mix of flamboyance and melancholy. It was originally a draft for a symphony. Feltsman was often precise and at other times poetic.

For the first concerto, over all the performance is good, but I think Rastropovich's interpretation lacks energy and drama. Feltsman and the orchestra do a fine job, but this concerto is on of the most recorded and performed in the repertoire, and there are many recordings more exciting than this.

It would be interesting if Martha Argerich teamed up with either Karajan or Haitink, or Ashkenazi, for the third concerto.

      5 out of 5 stars A pleasent surprise.......2006-11-23

I never heard of Bernd Glemser before I bought this CD, but I think it's one of the best performances that I know of. The others being Horowitz and Kissin, not the Kissin-von Karajan, which is too slow, but the Kissin performance at Carnegie hall with Seiji Oszawa. This was broadcast on PBS and is not on CD. Glemser plays with energy and makes this concerto exciting and the slow parts are beautiful. Glemser understands Tchaikovsky, he plays this with a virtuoso piano style, but you can still hear the Tchaikovsky who wrote the Nutcracker suite.

4 out of 5 stars Worthwhile budget disc.......2001-11-18

OK, so maybe the performance of the First Piano Concerto isn't all that jaw-dropping or distinctive, and not in the same league as Argerich or Van Cliburn. But it's still worth a listen, and Glemser/Wit's laid back approach reveals that the old warhorse's greatness is in the subtle, quieter moments, not the pounding chords. The remaining pieces on this disc, especially the Andante and Finale, are intriguing and uncommon enough finds to make the disc worth the modest asking price.
