This is by far the best CD in the Baby Einstein collection--it will put your toddler in hyperactive playful mode and exhaust you as you try to keep up. But for today's overweight, tv- and game- addicted children, this is great!

This CD is a lot of fun. The music is bubbly and upbeat and makes you want to get up and dance or just jump around. It's a great way to spend some play time with your kids. And the classical music exposure is a bonus.

Synthesized dreck.......2005-08-13

Why did the producers use synthesizers for this music? It's awful. It's possible to hook kids on classical music using the actual instruments written for it - that's how I got hooked. That's what Mel Blanc and Disney did in their cartoons, Bugs Bunny and Fantasia. I do NOT recommend this CD to anyone. It was a shower gift. If you are not familiar with classical music, then I recommend "Baby Needs Beethoven", which is a collection of music using real instruments (albeit shortened - no full length symphonies here).

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Upbeat and Sparkling.......2003-06-12

Sometimes you need something upbeat and sparkling. A beer? Champagne? Okay. But, these Exotic Dances are refreshing as well. Oue performs a collection of primarily Classical Period excerpts that bubble and lift your spirits. There is good continuity here. Unlike some samplers, this CD contains works that are nicely mated and seem to belong with each other. They are mated so well in fact that I do not feel cheated by not hearing the entire opera from which each piece was extracted. It certainly helps that they are all performed by the same orchestra and conductor, and performed exquisitely.

This is another supurb digital recording from Reference. Truly dynamic, crystal clear, and well balanced. As another reviewer noted, recordings of this caliber are often used to audition high-end audio equipment. Fortunately, the quality of engineering goes hand-in-hand with the musicality of this collection. Five sparkling stars.

Exquisite and marvelous.......2000-08-04

In 1997, during the initial stages of buying new Hi-fi-equipment, I listened to music I knew best from CD's I possessed. As a service to the buyer better Hi-fi-shops play CD's of excellent sound quality as to promote their equipment. One of those was Exotic Dances performed by the Minnesota Orchestra under Eije Oue. I was amazed. Better sound quality I had never experienced and maybe that was due to the better equipment on which it was played but also that the musical quality of this orchestra recorded by Reference Recordings was a revelation. Most pieces on this CD are very wellknown, but Mr. Oue possesses the power to unveil hidden treasures within the music. Listen to the astounding power in Richard Strauss' Dance of the Seven Veils from Salome, the explosions of beats on the bassdrum are breathtakingly realistic. The influence of oriental music on the composers of the first decades of the last century is evident. Stravinsky and Ravel, each in their own way, picked up the scent of mystic enchantment that surrounded the artforms of that area. In jazz-circles this influence was earlier apparent and many so-called classical composers gave that influence a place in their work. Rimsky-Korsakov, being Stravinsky's teacher, greatly contributed to this phenomenon.

A huge disapointment.......2004-12-01

Yes, this disc has some stunning music...about 2 minutes per selection of it. Sometimes a little more, but this is just a movement or so of each. I was thrilled to find Andrew Davis' version of The Polovstian Dances and found only a short choral section of it. It is a useful survey if you are a fledgeling listener to Russian classical music, but other than that, it is pretty useless for listening.

The true Russian spirit............2000-06-18

This CD has a wonderful combination of the best tunes Russia has to offer (under 10 minutes of course!). Folk tunes like Two Guitars and Dark Eyes add to the Russian spirit. Also a nice war-like tune by an unfamilar man by the name of Knipper. This is his only work that made it to the world of classical music. Many other works done nicely by Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, and many others who don't end with 'sky'. Very nice way to introduce you to the Russians. Buy it even if you know about the Russian works. There are a few 'one hitters' on this CD.

Best of the best!.......2006-12-31

I have listened to most of the CBS Masterworks Dinner Classics series and have 3 favorites, which I never tire of. Those 3 are: Dinner for Two, The Italian Album and The French Album. Sunday Brunch would be a close 4th. All these albums have the most lyrical and soothing music, all performed by top rate orchestras. I've bought 40 or 50 classical tapes/CDs over the years, but I keep going back to these Dinner Classics favorites. Dinner for Two is the best of the best! You will never get tired of this most awesome music!

The Best Classical Compilation Ever Created.......2001-04-19

This CD includes some of the most beautiful classical music ever composed, from well known pieces to almost obscure works, resulting in a compilation disc that is yet to be surpassed. The music is perfect for a romantic evening, background for an intimate party or simply personal reflection and relaxation. The music is superbly orchestrated and performed with pure grace.

This title usually brings to mind Rimsky-Korsakov's opera of the same name, but Tchaikovsky's 1873 incidental music for Alexander Ostrovsky's play Snegurochka deserves recognition. Replete with beautiful tunes--some by Tchaikovsky and others adapted by him from Russian folk sources--this is a welcome addition for those with a fondness for Russian opera. This Naxos recording offers hearty, knowledgeable singing and playing from the Moscow Capella and Moscow Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Igor Golovchin. Both mezzo- soprano Elena Okolysheva and tenor Arkady Mishenkin have the characteristic back-of-the-throat Slavic production; while his sound is a bit too tight for comfort, she's a pleasure to hear in this repertoire. --Sarah Bryan Miller

Tchaikovsky, Eugene Ormandy, Nutracker, Success!.......2005-08-08

I own two wonderful "Nutracker" ballet recordings, one with Antal Dorati conducting and this one with Eugene Ormandy conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra. While hands down the Dorati edition is superior, this one is a good first choice and not at all bad. The music is beautifully remastered for CD, and it has never sounded better. The Philadelphia Orchestra is one of America's premier orchestras in the East Coast and during the time that Eugene Ormandy was its principal conductor, a lot was accomplished in the field of great symphonic/orchestral music. This recording exists in its entirety (this one) and in excerpts. The Nutcraker was Tchaikovsky's last ballet and one that appeals to children and the young-at-heart. The ballet begins in a 19th century upper-class home celebrating Christmas. The heroine Clara, a young girl, receives a Nutracker as a gift. The magician Dusselmeyer has in fact created such an object for the sole purpose of enchanting Clara (or to make her grow into womanhood in the way that Alice from Lewis Carrol's "Alice In Wonderland" does). At night, the Nutracker comes to life, Clara defeats the evil mice and the Mice King and journeys to the Realm of the Sweets where she is entertained in a lavish, fairy-tale world full of dancing candies. The music is appropriately wistful and magical, much of the segments played ad nauseum during Christmas on tv and movies - Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy with its "whisper-like" tinkling of the Glockenspiel, the Russian-flavored Dance, the Waltz of the Flowers and Waltz of the Snowflakes (complete with chorus) and the Pas De Deux- which is in my opinion the most heartbreaking and beautiful piece of music Tchaikovsky ever composed, and that's saying a lot because he composed a number of fine orchestral pieces. The Pas De Deux is melancholy and noble. There is a sadness to the piece because it was said Tchaikovsky's sister died at the time. But I always feel that Tchaikovsky contrasted jovial Russian folk music with the profoundly sad pieces because of his tragic life and his dilemma - he was a gay man in a very straight, Russian Catholic world that could not accept him. Tchaikovsky personally never felt this ballet was his best (Sleeping Beauty was his masterpiece even according to Tchaikovsky and Swan Lake he was also proud of) but it's a bubbly, wonderfully brilliant ballet that warms the soul.
