A Premier Bach Series Recording.......2007-03-26
But what about the performances? Here's the best way I can sum it up. Having listened to these disks for some two decades, in the car, on the main home stereo system, on portable equipment, on the boom box, and etc., etc., it is, I imagine, inevitable that one ends up memorizing nearly every note. And with that familiarity comes the ability to detect flaws in the performance, missteps, missed beats, the occasional off-tone instrument. Here's the rub: it is difficult to locate any significant flaw in the performances. These performances are about as perfect as one can get, but having said that, there is more. The sound reproduction of this recording remains near or at the top of any Bach recordings with which I've become familiar, and remains in my own thinking the de facto standard by which other performances should be measured.
Sound too good to be true? Pick up a set and see for yourself. And then relish the thought that you paid $40 for a set worth far more.
A nice way to complete your collection of Bach's concertos..........2007-02-21
This set sounds fantastic and is a great value to boot. Strongly recommended for those who loved Bach's Bradenburg concertos and Overtures and are looking for something new to sink their teeth into.
"Best Bach - Box Set".......2005-11-06
Pinnock is good performer.......2005-09-30
Might sound better when it's played piano.
Unbeatable Value.......2004-12-15
The sound is clear, deep, and only a little bit on the bright side.
While you're at it, buy the Pinnock/English Concert complete Mozart symphonies. Sure, Mozart's first fifteen or so aren't anything special, but the set is superb and the price unbelievable.

Great all around - especially Mozart.......2005-06-30
Every piece on these discs is wonderful, and I urge you to get them as quickly as possible. The style and wit of these recordings are not to be missed at any cost. As the English flutist William Bennett, whose recordings you should look into if you play flute, once told me, "Be a light person - like Jean-Pierre Rampal!"
Rampal: master flutist of the 20th Century.......2003-08-17
Rampal has other qualities that stand out in his recordings. He was well aware that most of the best flute music was composed in the Baroque and Classical eras, and sought out the very best, well known or rare, in these genres - while not being limited to these periods.
Finally, Rampal was picky about the ensembles he played with and the recording companies who did the technical work for his recordings. The ensembles might be famous or little known, but always high-quality cooperators. The result is nearly always, as in this case, brilliant, clear, and balanced.
Five stars gets used frequently in recording reviews - it's too little for this recording.
great!.......2001-01-04

This delectable collection of Bach Keyboard concertos is so unsullied by tradition or a point to prove that the listener is left refreshed. Angela Hewitt plays with such warmth and song-like smoothness in the slow movements that they are little islands of repose in the midst of Bach's perky outer movements, which Hewitt and conductor-violinist Richard Tognetti launch with unmatched verve, rhythmic thrust and quick-but-never-rushed tempi. The Fifth Brandenburg and the Triple Concerto also call for a violin and flute and Togneti and Alison Mitchell are ideal partners to Hewitt: the give and take seems simply like great "jamming." Every note is clear and each soloist (and the fine Australian Chamber Orchestra) adds ornaments which are pert and welcome. The big cadenza in the Fifth Brandenburg is like liquid--beautifully flowing and well-articulated by Hewitt--and while the virtuosity is never in doubt, she never draws attention to herself. She plays a modern piano and the Orchestra play modern instruments, but early-music performance practice and style are very much in evidence (including a harpsichord in the continuo section). This is Bach playing of the highest order and splendid entertainment. --Robert LevineAlbum Details

Exhilarating.......2007-07-12
If I wanted to introduce someone to the glories of Bach, this is the CD I'd play to them. Turn it up loud and rejoice.
The Lightness of Joy.......2007-01-19
However, having now listened to both volumes of the Keyboard Concertos several times, I know how they affect me - every time I listen, I feel better...lighter...simply more joyful.
George Leigh Mallory -- he of "Because it's there" Mount Everest fame -- also said what must surely apply to these performances: "What we get from this ... is just sheer joy. And joy is, after all, the end of life. We do not live to eat and make money; we eat and make money to be able to enjoy life. That is what life means and what life is for."
A mix of good and not so good.......2006-03-02
The soloist performance I'd rate 3 stars; the support of the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the generally excellent sound bumps the overall rating to 4.
Wonderful but.......2006-02-26
Fans of Hewitt will rejoice; everyone else may look askance.......2005-11-12
Hewitt plays the traditional Bach keyboard concerti Nos. 1 and 7 from the piano and contributes a performance of the Bach "Triple" Concerto from the concert grand to fill out this well-stocked disk of Bach wonders. I only wish I had more wonderful things to say about the goings on.
What I find most unattractive about these renditions -- aside from the very unstylistic inclusion of a concert grand piano in the Brandenburg and Triple concerti -- is the way the combined forces mix styles.
In the opening Concerto No. 1 for keyboard, Hewitt at times produces a sonority that is more appropriate for Brahms than Bach. She is matched by a scrawny sounding period band from Autstralia. This combination of Brahmsian piano and period string band...well, it just doesn't come off very well for me.
Other than her occasionally overripe tone and romantic sonority, I don't quibble with Hewitt's approach for the most part. She is a known commodity in Bach and her work here is similar to everything else she's done with this composer. Only a highly romanticized cadenza at the conclusion of the Triple Concerto -- which probably comes off best among the four concerti recorded here -- seems wayward.
On the pluse side, the opening movement of the Concerto No. 1 is pushed very hard in Bach style and the middle section of the Concerto No. 7 is very beautiful. It works well in the piano concertos but elsewhere seems to me to be a step backward to a time when people thought Bach surely must have meant to include a concert grand piano where he only had the limitations of the clavichord and harpsichord at his disposal.
Where this error in judgment is most apparent is in the Brandenburg Concerto No. 5. Listen to that long harpsichord solo at the end of the first movement by any good recording using a harpsichord, then come back to this recording and notice the way the piano not only lacks color throughout the concerto but almost seems to disappear at the same junction.
At other times, the concerto grand overwhelms the thin tone of Richard Tognetti's violin and Alison Mitchells flute, both here and in the Triple Concerto. This, to me, is what most renders this recording a curiosity and not essential Bach musicmaking.
I think this recording will be accepted with open arms by fans of Hewitt and those that hanker for a return to the era of Alfred Cortot's recordings of the Brandenburgs circa 1931. For others, this recording will more likely be considered an oddity to be heard once and discarded.

Bachiana is a sterling collection of concertos by Bach's sons. The most substantial work on this well-filled disc is C.P.E. Bach's Concerto for Harpsichord and Fortepiano from 1788, the year of his death. The two instruments are treated as equals, and the orchestra plays a significant role as well. The first movement offers a unique combination of drama (especially in the forceful orchestral interjections) and piquant wit, also characteristic of the Presto finale. Those movements sandwich a grave Larghetto of austere beauty. It's a deeply personal, perhaps valedictory, work. The other selections have plenty of appeal, too. J.C. Bach's Sinfonia Concertante is a charming work of deceptive lightness. W.F.E. Bach's Flute Concerto opens with a first movement featuring complex textures and moves on to a gently lovely Largo and a delightful Vivace finale. The least known of these four Bachs, J.C.F., contributes a fascinating Concerto for Fortepiano and Viola, notable for fetching interplay between the instruments and the integrated orchestral role. --Dan DavisCustomer Reviews:
Good Stuff from the Bach Boys.......2003-11-11
Unfortunately, the lone representative here from J. C. is attractive and diverting but not one of his best works. It sounds, as all the lesser pieces by this composer sound, like Mozart without genius. There is better J. C. Bach music around.
But then the work by J. Ch. F. Bach, the least remembered of the Bach sons, is well above what I have heard from him in the past. The Concerto for Fortepiano and Viola is a novel concept, and it is approached with imagination by J. Ch. F. The quality of invention is well sustained in this big work--at almost 26 minutes by far the most substantial composition on the disc. I liked especially the opening movement marked allegro con brio, a successful blend of fire and lyricism. While it is the most striking movement, the others have their moments of beauty and drama too; overall, this is a concerto of great interest.
Last and best is the valedictory concerto of C. P. E. Bach, certainly the greatest of J. S.'s sons. The Concerto for Harpsichord and Fortepiano is an off-beat masterwork in which C. P. E. bids farewell to the harpsichord by playing it off against its young cousin the fortepiano, now in the ascendancy. The concerto is a wonderful exploration of the sonorities of both instruments, and if they were rivals in the music world, here they are instead civilized conversationalists. If you enjoy C. P. E. Bach's strange harmonic explorations and melodies that turn on a dime, here they are in extremely enjoyable abundance. The last movement is a joyous, youthful romp, remarkable coming from the 70-something C. P. E.
If the music is fine, the music making is extraordinary. Musica Antiqua and Goebel always have novel things to say about the novelties they profer, and these performances are no exception. The playing is wonderfully fluid, dramatic when it needs to be (I always love the horns), plangent and tender when that is called for.
Excellent sound rounds out the package: it's close but atmospheric, with great detail as well as timbral realism. I highly recommend this one.
Interesthing evolution to the romantic period.......2003-03-14
The sound is deep and delicious ! Archiv does it again. Goebel too.

The passion of his keyboard compositions are here restrained, but dignified and reserved.
Favorite is Oboe Concerto in B Flat, with a magnificent performance on the Allegretto by Holliger.
Unique and rare harp concerto by CPE Bach, only one he did, is performed admirably by Ursula Holliger.
Light and airy music to relax by. All oboe and flute and yes, even harp lovers will enjoy this two-disc set.

An Embarassment of Riches.......2005-12-24
As for the second CD, at this price to have these thrown in is an embarassment of riches. The performances have wonderful vigor, and zest in abundance. Tempi, and phrasing have that rare sense of absolute rightness about them. The recording sound quality both here and in the Kunst der Fuge is well up to the audiophile grade quality that you tend to take from granted from Opus 111.
A stupendous buy even if the liner notes are close to non-existent.
This recording of these Keyboard Concertos is tops.......2005-02-15
"Here's a collection of almost frantically intense Bach harpsichord concertos--a form that the big guy himself invented. The Concerto in D Minor, BWV 1052, is generally--and for good reason--regarded to be the finest single work of its time before Mozart. It's a grand, emotionally draining piece in three relentlessly grim movements. The other pieces on this disc are a little more relaxed, which is most welcome, since the performers really do push the music about as far as it will go in terms of energy and drive." (David Hurwitz, Amazon.com)

Outstanding bargain collection of Telemann concerti with rarities.......2007-01-28
The first CD, by Martin Haselboeck with the Wiener Akademie, includes the rare and extraordinary Cricket Symphony (Grillensymphonie), or El Grillo of Telemann. That work features, as solo instruments piccolo, two double basses (!), chalumeau (early version of the clarinet), oboe, and violin. The final movement is in the earthy Polish folk style that Telemann exploited the same way that Joseph Haydn would later exploit Hungarian gypsy styles in his chamber and orchestral compositions.
The second CD is six oboe concerti played by Thomas Indermuehle with the English Chamber Orchestra, available separately in a Novalis Record at $21. See my review of this.
On the third CD the Concerto in E minor for flute, violin and strings, offers an extraordinary display of unexpected, virtuosic instrumental ensemble effects whose impact on the listeners in Telemann's time must have been startling, to say the least. I can't resist the temptation to try to sketch a few details of the openings of the movements.
The opening Allegro begins with a series of rapid upward moving scales with the entire orchestra in unison, each successive scale entering on a lower pitch, until the halted by two powerful chords followed by a downmoving broken couplets. All this has our full attention when the flute enters with what sounds like it might be a fugal passage - but no, the solo violin unexpectedly takes up the opening scalar passages that the orchestra had played in unison. At a repetition flute takes up its theme again, this time with violin in duet and the entire orchestra now commences the scalar passages with powerful effect.
In the Adagio the flute begins with a languorous theme, soon lazily chased by the violin - all this accompanied by plucked strings. In the third movement dazzingly rapid arpeggios by the soloists are superimposed on robust marching chords of the orchestra.
The final adagio-allegro begins with a short but agonizingly mournful theme in flute and violin, accompanied by eerie sequences of otherwordly minor 7ths and 9ths in the strings, the whole finally brought to a close with a ringing harpschord arpeggiated chord. The final Allegro brings all the forces - soloists as well as the strings together, interacting with each other using several rhythmic figures that are exchanged among different orchestral instruments, as well as soloists.
It's this integral use of the orchestra as an equal and often divided partner with the soloist(s) that I have found is one of the major differences between Telemann and most baroque other composers, except J.S. Bach. However in Bach it's the counterpoint that's important, not, in most cases, the variation in instrumental textures, rhythmic contrasts, and combinations.
Some minor downsides can be mentioned - a few inexplicable wrong notes or flaws in the first CD set and only sketchy, two page liner notes. However, I found Concerto for flute and violin in E alone worth the price of the CD set. This, along with inclusion of so many varied concerti in striking instrumental combinations makes this a decidedly recommendable set.

Nobody does Bach better........2006-08-28
This is a wonderfully lyrical interpretation that is true to baroque era sound, tempos, and dynamics. OK, it's just a little romanticized, but I think Bach would have thrilled to hear his masterpieces performed like this.
The sound quality isn't quite up to current standards, but the playing is so beautiful it doesn't matter.
These are among Bach's most melodic and emotional compositions. I have four recordings of these violin concertos, love them all, and never get tired of rehearing them.
