My best baroque CD.......2004-08-29

Over the years from time to time I bought some CDs with baroque brass ensemble music, always hoping it would be so fascinating as what I knew from my fathers PJBE vynil records. What I bought so far all are nice but also somewhat boring after short time. Unfortunately I never bought something from the PJBE until now, and this is the first time that a complete CD (and in this case even two of them) of baroque music for brass is surprising and fascinating me with every 'song', showing facetes and diversity I always missed on my other records. Finally nothing is like the original PJ!

Après nous avoir fait plaisir avec le Greatest Hits, voici un double CD qui nous enchante avec les principales pièces de la Renaissance du sublime Philip Jones Brass Ensemble. Il y a longtemps que nous attendions la mise en CD de ces oeuvres, et nous voila comblé. Pour plusieurs pièces, c'est Elgar Howarth qui les a arrangé. Un grand moment de musique pour cuivres avec de grands compositeurs, délicieusement arrangées.
Pour éléver encore plus ces 2 cds, saluons encore la présence du London Festival Brass Ensemble dirigé par Elgar Howarth (dont la plus part des membres sont du PJBE), alors quoi de plus normal d'avoir inclu leur préstation.

Historical Instruments, Wonderful Listening.......2005-08-12

This recording (made at Wik Castle between November 1974 and December 1976) not only bears eloquent testimony to the delight in musical research to be found among representatives of the first generation of "early music specialists" in Sweden, but also fills an otherwise neglected gap in repertoire, music for viola da gamba and lute, in good to very good technical quality. Bengt Ericson, born in 1927, studied under August Wenzinger at the Schola Cantorum of Basel and here plays a historic viola da gamba built in 1701 and borrowed from the Stockholm Museum of Musical History, the bow a German one from Lübeck made about ten years previously. Rolf LaFleur, born in 1937, was a pupil of Karl Scheit in Vienna and here plays a copy of a ten-course Renaissance lute. The recorded programm includes pieces from the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, from Oritz to Abel. Track 6 contains for lute solo pieces to be played with scordatura and written by French lutenist Robert Ballard. Track 9 is an eight and a half minute sonata for viola da gamba solo by Carl Friedrich Abel. All the other pieces on the CD were either originally composed for Viola da gamba and lute or were arranged for this highly unusual but felicitous combination of instruments by the musicians themselves. The result is a disc (total playing time: 70 minutes) which is able to convey an excellent impression of both instruments both alone and in combination, especially taking into consideration the recording quality which, for that time, is very good (although on the first nine tracks one does get the impression that both instruments are playing slightly to the left side of proceedings, an impression that ceases abruptly with track 10). At all events, I should like to thank the record label BIS for this wonderful listening experience.

Early Instrument Combination.......2000-10-13

This is an interesting combination of two early instruments, the lute and the viola da gamba. As such, this CD represents a sound you're not likely to hear elsewhere. The compositions dating from the late 16th through the 18th centuries are well played. The program presents an excursion slightly off the beaten path that is well worth the trip.

This is an excellent selection of English virginal music, played with great sensitivity and imagination by Skip Sempe. Some pieces are arranged for two or even three harpsichords - this is a fantastic sound, especially as the three instruments used are all gorgeous.

The repertoire is of very high quality, and the performances do not let it down.

I would give this my very top recommendation.
