Notes
It is odd that our popular culture has championed the guitar as the ultimate accompaniment to the voice, but as yet the classical world has not embraced this magical combination. It is my goal to create a new repertoire that speaks from and to the heart. The recording opens with Pearly Everlasting, a lament on the death of our musical partner, John Fleagle, who founded LiveOak with us in 1976. The style of this duet combines many influences, from medieval drones to 17th century lute writing with dense counterpoint freed from any metrical ties. A Single Veil sets a wide collection of verse from several cultures and eras. This piece is particularly poignant for us, as it debuted a few weeks after 9/11/01. Its texts (and tunes) helped us through that difficult time. I composed Dake's Song for guitar builder Dake Traphagen. Débil del Alba (Tenderness of the Dawn) was conceived as a duet for guitar and dancer; I wrote it for my son Adam Wallace and dancer Jessyca Dudley. The title comes from Pablo Neruda. The beasts of Bestiary are from Roethke once again, as well as Star-nosed Mole of Nancy's creation. The musical language of each varies greatly from the slow imitation and waddling rhythms describing The Sloth; an English country tune with some off-color harmonies presenting The Cow; a 15/8 meter bringing on The Lady and the Bear; while the dark world of The Star-nosed Mole is gently crawled through on a 12-tone row; and The Serpent just has to sing in some shade of blue. The newest cycle on this recording, and its title piece, Woman of the Water, is a moving group of poems by the late American poet Theodore Roethke (pronounced ret-kee). Frank Wallace

The smash success of Celtic Woman generated a lot of demand for more music from the talented performers, and The Water Is Wide is a rerelease of the first album of Órla Fallon, the harp-playing brunette. As the title suggests, the album is filled with traditional songs, including "The Water Is Wide," "She Moved Thro' the Fair," and "Down by the Sally Gardens," as well as traditional Irish songs such as "Aliliu Na Gamhna," "Carrickfergus," and "The Gartan Mother's Lullaby." Celtic Woman fans will enjoy hearing "Siuil a Run" again, and it also provides a different vibe to the rest of the album's steady flow of delicate loveliness. Most of the songs are Órla accompanying herself, but at only 37 minutes, The Water Is Wide doesn't overstay its welcome. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Enchanted .......2007-06-10

In all my 68 years I have never been so captivated by any one musician or group. I can not seem to get enough ! ! ! I am especially enchanted by Ms.Orla Fallon. Her personal beauty, the clear and perfect harp and her most wonderful voice have won my heart and soul. Then there is Ms. Naisbitt's outstanding performances. Absolutely and astoundingly the most energetic and captivating young lady I have ever heard or seen. The entire effort is beyond belief. I had the great pleasure to see them in person on tour here in Salt Lake City at the Ford Theater in May 2007. I wanted so much to get to meet them but they were scheduled in Denver the next day and had to leave immediately at the end of the performance. May God bless them all and keep them safe and able to continue in this wonderful tradition of Ireland. Darwin M Pope

5 out of 5 stars SEOHANE.......2007-06-08

I enjoy listening to this CD everytime I put it in. It is a very relaxing and calming experience. I have grown to be a big fan of traditional Irish music!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-05-28

Celtic Woman is a musical ensemble comprised of five Irish and one New Zealander female artists - five vocalists (including Orla Fallon), and one violinist. This wonderful album is a collection of 11 tracks, all the work of the incomparable Orla Fallon. Orla has won the International Feis Ceoil and International Pan Celtic competitions twice, and this album shows off her ability at its best.

I like having nice music to listen to at work, and this album is one of my favorites. While working, I love the angelic sound of Orla's voice sweeping out of my speakers. Overall, I found this to be a great album, one that is always wonderful to listen to. I give it my highest recommendations!

2 out of 5 stars Not a great performance.........2007-05-04

I absolutely LOVE Orla in Celtic Woman, which is why I bought her personal CD - she's my favorite of all the women performing in CW. I was expecting more of the same.. her haunting vocals similar to Siuil a Ruin, Newgrange, and Harry's Game - but no. The entire CD is her and her harp, like on Inisfree from CW - BORING. It's more fit as a CD of children's lullabys then anything for an adult.

5 out of 5 stars Voice of an angel.......2007-03-22

Orla Fallon is one of those highly gifted people who you can raise your spirits and at the same time relax you. Her voice is unbelievably lovely, as is her playing of the harp. Put the two togather and you have a CD, you will play over and over. Even small children will love her voice and gentle way of singing.

3 out of 5 stars The Skeleton Key - sounds of the old South.......2007-04-11

Dark, stormy listening to take you to the marshlands of New Orleans - at times, clearly a soundtrack, but with tracks from the likes of Robert Johnson and the hoodoo beats of Iko Iko, you'll suddenly feel an inkling for Gumbo like a true bayou-dwelling Creole.

4 out of 5 stars contains every compositional piece from the movie.......2006-08-04

This CD contains what I thought was every compositional piece from the movie. I was hoping the CD in general would be a little more up-beat and personally I found it a little bit boring to listen to. Listen carefully to the music of the movie becuase that is exactly what you get.

5 out of 5 stars good soundtrack.......2006-01-13

If you are fan of the blues, or you simply enjoy eerie instrumental tunes, this soundtrack is for you.
It is very rare for me to find a soundtrack that contains all the songs i liked from a movie. This is the case! It even has Papa Justify's conjuration of sacrifice, those drums really take you to New Orleans Hoodoo streets. A great complement for the fans of the movie .

4 out of 5 stars Review from Equalmusic.com.......2005-10-28

If you are jonesing for the way New Orleans' used to be or are kicking yourself hard because you never made the pilgrimage down before the recent tragedy, then the soundtrack to The Skeleton Key is your best bet. Like the movie, the soundtrack transports the audience into the bayou culture with such ease that at times it's almost hard to believe that you're not in fact below the Mason-Dixon Line. Released on Varese Records, it is the perfect accompaniment to the film.

Composer Edward Shearmur and the Hollywood Studio Symphony bring the flick to life with their bone chilling orchestrations that can creep you out even in the light of day. Those who dig the horror aspect of the film will be pleased with the inclusion of "Conjure of Sacrifice," a spoken track key to the movie's plot. However, the real reason to buy this release is not for its freaky facets but for its spotlight on a few of the most influential blues artists of the twentieth century.

For anyone beginning to cultivate an interest in blues, this is a great foray into the genre and its heavy hitters. First off is Robert Johnson's "Come On In My Kitchen." Johnson, who many have dubbed the father of modern rock and roll, delivers his legendary take on Delta Blues with perfection. Mississippi Fred McDowell, master of the slide guitar, whether it be bottleneck or the apocryphal steak bone, lends his "61 Highway Blues" with a kind of raw integrity.

My vote however, goes to celebrated gospel musician, Blind Willie Johnson. His "God Moves On The Water" with its crackly sound quality, delivers a sucker punch to the soul. Johnny Farmer's "Death Letter" is easily the best track the recording has to offer. Farmer, the only bluesman on the disc still alive and kicking it, loans an infectious ditty that seeps into the skin and refuses to be washed away. Haunting and beat driven, the song is given a modern remix by southern rapper, Organized Noize. The marriage of Delta and hip-hop here is flawless.

Of course there are a few missteps and oddities. Blackbud's "Barefoot Dancing" is a jarring departure from the easy bayou theme. The song is ill suited to both movie and soundtrack, a definite skipper. As is Joe Washburn's "The Goldrush," which despite its melodic back music has a whiny quality that's hard to overlook. "Do Watcha Wanna" by Rebirth Brass Band is an interesting addition. It is a lively big band song that puts one in the mood for Mardi Gras. A rare gem is The Dixie Cups' version of the old Indian Mardi Gras chant "Iko Iko." Although given sinister connotations in the film, it is a fun and upbeat addition to the disc.

Seeped in New Orleans' jazz and Cajun music, the CD captures the music of The Big Easy and its surrounding parishes with forthright conviction. With the latest disaster still a fresh wound, the soundtrack as well as the film is jarring in ways that have nothing to do with the practice of voodoo. However, it is its ability to elegantly capture the culture and feel of the place that make both worth looking into. If only for a little while New Orleans's is returned to its former splendor through the music it has become known for. I suggest seeing the movie first then checking out this superb auxiliary.

5 out of 5 stars Spooky good fun!.......2005-09-01

I bought this soundtrack mostly for the song that played during the opening and end credits, "Death Letter" by Johnny Farmer (with some fun added drum beats and enhancement by Organized Noize). The song (as well as the rest of the soundtrack) was mixed by Chris Fogel. The rest of the soundtrack is a mix of old bayou songs and Edward Shearmur's shamelessly delicious score. It's spooky with a taste of the old South. It's a lot of fun and one of the most entertaining soundtracks I have heard in a while.

The pristine tones and lilting melodies of the Celtic harp are immediately inviting. Celtic Harpestry, a companion to a PBS performance special, explores a sound both traditional and modern in a tasteful and evocative collection. This isn't a purist's album--half of the harpists aren't even from the Celtic isles, and among the album's old Irish chestnuts is "My Heart Will Go On," the love theme from Titanic. The otherwise-joyful Belfast Harp Orchestra tromp through the James Horner tune, almost pulling some subtlety out of its overwrought themes. Turlough O'Carolan, the blind patron saint of the Celtic harp, might wish he were deaf as well, if he could hear it. But the bard would be thrilled to hear the 12-piece BHO playing the traditional "Brian Boru's Set" or one of founder Janet Harbison's zephyrlike originals. Her "Earth, Water, Wind and Fire" elicits shifting textures and colors that belie their traditional roots. The song also exemplifies the ethereal side of the Celtic harp explored on Celtic Harpestry with artists like Rüdiger Oppermann. Playing a wire-strung harp accompanied by bass and keyboards, the German harpist soars through crystalline melodies whether he's playing traditional tunes or originals. The most traditional sound actually comes from the American players. Cheryl Ann Fulton gives a straight-up rendition of "Breton Medley," and jazz harpist Deborah Henson-Conant is refreshingly restrained, faithfully rendering "Londonderry Aire (Danny Boy)" and "The Minstrel Boy." Although Celtic Harpestry focuses on slow airs, there are robust performances here, including those by Máire Ni Chathasaigh's group and the harp and vocal duo of Sileas. Outside of the Titanic love theme, Celtic Harpestry is an elegantly wrought collection. --John Diliberto

4 out of 5 stars Celtic Meets Classical.......2007-07-12

Hard rock it ain't. Celtic Harpestry: A Contemporary Celtic Collection may cite "contemporary" in its title, but the style is classic. Rich harmonies and intricate musical textures rise to a crescendo in "Earth, Water, Wind And Fire," the final cut, performed by the Belfast Harp Orchestra.

This collection overlaps several genres. Celtic, classical and New Age meet in what may be the instrument most associated with classical melodies.

If you are a fan of Rap or Hip Hop, keep looking. If you want a hoedown, this is not going to be your cuppa joe. But if you are looking for something elegant - background music for a business or important meeting, for example - this is a wonderful, understated choice.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Celtic Cd.......2006-12-30

A sibling to "Harpestry," this is a wonderful cd. I am a harper and head up a Celtic Harp Choir at my church (I'm a fulltime church music director), and I have used this cd as a model for my musicians. It's very pleasant to listen to, and you definitely get a good feel for the Celtic style. I highly recommend this!

5 out of 5 stars Just lovely!.......2003-05-25

This uplifting compilation CD from Imaginary Road Records, actually the soundtrack to the public television special "Celtic Harpestry at Lismore Castle, Ireland", is simply beautiful. Especially wonderful are the five numbers by the Belfast Harp Orchestra, an ensemble of 12 harpists who demonstrate remarkable intonation and stunning coordination as they play together on instruments that are difficult enough just to play alone. What a great concept, and what great musicianship! Also featured are individual performers such as Maire Ni Chathasaigh on Irish harp, Rudiger Oppermann on wire-strung harp, Cheryl Ann Fulton on a contemporary lever harp, the harp and song duo Sileas, and Deborah Henson-Conant on a "Camac `Baby Blue' Celtic electroharp". Other instruments, including Uilleann pipes and whistle, violin, viola and concertina, occasionally join in, but the focus is on the harp itself. In all its many forms and combinations, the harpestry on this recording remains soothingly delicate in timbre while at the same time scintillating in technique--in short, a pure delight. If you enjoy "Celtic Harpesty", you're sure to like it's companion release, "Harpestry: A Contemporary Collection", featuring more of a worldwide assortment of harpers. Another great harp compilation CD is "Faces of the Harp" from Narada.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2001-08-30

I always had a desire to learn to play the Celtic harp...and the PBS special and especially this CD made that desire boil over. Don't buy another harp CD before you've listened to this one!
No matter how many times I have listened to this recording, I ALWAYS break into a smile when the Belfast Harp Orchestra begins to play. Nothing prepares you for that 12-harp sound!
Order this CD with overnight shipping!!!

5 out of 5 stars The best harpestry CD!.......2001-07-23

One day in a music shop, my hand knocked three CDs off of a rack. The first CD, though the case was cracked, caught my eye. I bought it five minutes later. In this sweetly harmonized collection, nearly all the songs are wonderful. I would have bought the CD for only My Heart Will Go On-the song is a skillful take of the Titanic (movie) theme, and it seems almost to have a voice of its own. This is a must-have for any harp music lover!

    2 out of 5 stars I think maybe I don't get it.......2006-06-24

I am a huge sharrock fan, all of his other solo work(especially ask the ages)and the stuff he has done with pharoah and other groups is some of my favorite music, and I'm also not predjudiced against "free-jazz" as the critics label it(eric dolphy is my hero, and I love ornette coleman)but I just dont get this album, the songs seem like they are going to come together and start really jamming at one point or another in pretty much every track, but they just continue noodling around with no solid rythm or melody or solos or anything, the whole album just sounds like the five people noodling around aimlessly in the same key while they drummer just plays random rythms on the toms, maybe there is something really great or worthwhile on this album that I havent picked up on, but I just dont get the point of any of this music, plus its not enjoyable or energetic, get ask the ages instead is my advice.

this was my first sonny sharrock album and i was very pleasently surprised. yes, it's supposed to be a challenging avant garde record, but i found it very easy to listen to (great background music). sonny's wife (on the vocals) adds a very soothing quality to the sometimes chaotic music (and vice versa, she can sound pretty crazy at times). i would highly recommended this one, even for those who don't like avant garde and free jazz (and it's well packaged, the cd booklet is made of plastic not paper! great linear notes too)

    5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2006-04-14

A lot of free jazz, no matter what spiritual context the players were intending, dwells in the dark depths of human emotion, and the altissimo screams of saxophone and cacophonus piano pounding seem to burst forth with anguish and pain. Not so this album, which, while very challenging musically, appears to be an expression of pure love and joy-- even ectasy. "Black woman" is also incredibally soulful, something lost in a lot of "free music." Sharrock's playing casts him as the forefather of skronk-- but it's also surprising melodic. At one point during "portrait of linda in three colors, all black" i found myself moved to the point of vocalizing a loud "yeah!," with no one around to hear. a moving experience, and a must for fans of cecil taylor, ornette, shepp (especially, who's music seems to have a similar joyous tone to it) and heck, even modern noisemongers like sonic youth (who undoubtedly owe a debt to sonny.) Stunning and beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Tenors on Tour - Versatile and Beautiful.......2001-06-20

Tenors on Tour is a CD which will live forever. The opening songs by Placido Domingo, His arrangement of Blue Moon and Moon River, set the tone for the CD. To hear Richard Tucker do "Climb every Mountain" was a wonderful trip down memory lane. Who will ever forget him? Placido continues with Broadway..Maria from West Side Story and a Beatles song "Yesterday". Mandy Patinkin's "Over the Rainbow" is classic and wonderful! But in my opinion Jose Carreras has the most "goose bumping" production on the entire CD. His Ave (Maria) is so beautifully done it may just bring tears to your eyes. The "King" Pavarotti is the "clean-up Hitter with selections from LaBoheme, and he does "O Sole Mio" as only He can do it. This CD is a treat for anyone who enjoys fine music. You will play it over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Deeply satisfying music.......2002-04-03

I first heard Maslanka's Symphony No. 2, 3rd Movement performed by the Wichita State University Band several years ago and immediately fell in love with it. I've somehow managed to damage the CD and I'm gladly replacing it today. I highly recommend this CD not only for the incredible music itself, but also for what I feel is the intensity of the performance, the strength of the soloists and ensemble, and the deep sense of soul they bring to their music. If you're looking for a flawless performance, buy something by the Eastman Wind Ensemble or one of their many equals. If you haven't performed music of this type and caliber, it's easy to nit-pick the infrequent performance problems on this recording. If you're fortunate enough to have been part of a close-knit ensemble and enjoy modern wind music, this is a disc you must own.

          5 out of 5 stars Child's Garden of Dreams.......2000-11-02

This pretty much is a must have for anyone serious about good band music. A Child's Garden of Dreams is probably one of the best pieces of band literature ever written. Very fun to play also.
