Product Description:
Beethoven began composing his fifth and final piano concerto in 1809. His deafness was increasing and he began to shy away from performing in public. That is why this was the only concerto that Beethoven did not premiere. Instead, he chose his pupil, Carl Czerny to perform his masterpiece in Vienna on 28th November 1811.

It is often said that Beethoven wrote this work at a time when he had reached his height of genius. Composed in what is known to be Beethoven’s "middle period," the expansive form and symphonic character of this work embrace inspiring and heroic melodies, poetic and beautifully ornamented passages, all of which place considerable technical demands on the pianist.

It is reported that a girl by the name of Maria Anna von Westholt was the inspiration for the Romance Cantabile. Beethoven was a friend of the Westholt family. Maria’s father was a competent bassoonist and her brother was a talented flautist. Beethoven carefully composed for these two instruments but lost interest in his composition after writing the slow movement, Romance Cantabile. The outer movements were never composed. Willy Hess, who Willy Hess compiled a catalogue of Beethoven’s works that were not published by Breitkopf and Haertel, put the finishing touches to the one and only movement to prepare it for a performance.

Anton Rubinstein composed his Konzerstück towards the end of his life and is dated around 1889. It is a continuous 3-movement work and is rather peculiar in its instrumentation. It is not unlike a fantasy, in that it is one piece with pianistic intimacy with almost chamber music-like instrumentation contrasted by dense romantic expression. Rubinstein’s writing for the piano is spectacular And he explores the darkest depths of the instrument.

This Classical collection is one of great length and breadth ,and is well worth purchasing ,if you want an abundance of music at a low price.The sound quality is decent,however it is not great.This set will not provide you with the crisp,clear sound quality of a RCA,CBS or other well known label,so some classical aficionados may not appreciate it much.It all depends on what your looking for ,I guess.

I did not expect much in buying this collection, but I was greatly surpeised. There were no reviews of the product at the time, and I bought the collection simply as a sampler of many great piano pieces. Most of the recordings are exquisite and of decent recording quality. This collection was well worth the price.

20 Fabulous Discs.......2007-06-08

I am surprised that this set has been out for 4 years and nobody reviewed it here yet. This is a lovely and occasionally amazing compilation. I was moved by many of the compositions. I really enhanced my classical music collection with this set. You have so many legends here to enjoy, from Bach to Brahms, Mozart to Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Gershwin, and more. If you love classical piano music and don't already have most of these works then this is a must buy for you. The price may go up, but I was fortunate to cash in on the $17.97 price. Quite a bargain for 20 fabulous discs.

Elegance at the piano.......2007-06-16

I grew up listening to Moura Lympany's playing, especially Litolff's Scherzo. Never could understand how a person could play with absolute control at high speed. In this recording, most (though not all - the Etude in C# minor an obvious exception)of the music is more laid back, and played with great grace and with the controlled touch of a pianist at the peak of her career.
The ambience of the recording is a wide open one, giving us the full clear sound that makes listening to a grand piano to enjoyable.
If you enjoy listening to good piano music, this is a recording that you will enjoy a great deal.

Dame Moura is my favourite pianist. Her great style and sublety of expression comes out in all her recordings. this CD is the best value for money ever!!

Good bang for the buck........2005-12-07

I was killing some time in the store the other day and was in the mood for a cheap CD for the car for the ride home. I ran across this and saw a few recognizable titles so for about $5 I figured I'd take a chance. I'm fairly impressed, I wasn't crazy about some of her dynamics in Un Sospiro plus her little added frill in there but still enjoyed it...I'd learned that piece myself years back, still can't play it and probably never will! Another piece I've known for years is the infamous Rachmaninov Prelude in C#m. Again, I wasn't crazy about some of the dynamics of her style but she still nails it without a hitch. Then I got to some other interesting pieces, I love the Debussy Golliwog's Cakewalk...really sticks in your head. Sort of a classisized (?) ragtime and it's cool enough that I'm going to dig through my music and see if I don't have it somewhere. I thought the Chopin Etude in C#m was absolutely fabulous, she just cooks through it from beginning to end. I probably have the music for that too...I'm not even going to attempt it! ;-) In fact, I liked all the Chopin she plays here, it seems she had a real flair for his music. Without going on forever here I'll just say that there are several tracks I listen to extensively on here and I'm fairly impressed. For a lousy $5 how can you go wrong? Just buy the thing! I'd never heard of her before so I just did a little 'net searching and I'm saddened to find that she just passed away about 8 months ago at age 88, truly a loss to the classical music world. In any case, even at twice the price I doubt anyone would be disappointed with this CD.

This is a great CD and you can't beat the price. These piano compositions are great for restful backgroud music after a hard day. I want to get a second one for when this one wears out.

Rubinstein: Favorite Beethoven Sonatas.......2007-06-11

I can't say enough about Rubinstein's interpretation. These are my favorite sonatas and I worship Beethoven. I also have these sonatas done by Brendle, Ashkanazi, Kemph, Buchbinder, Horowitz, and Gould, but Rubinstein does them best. Out of five stars, I would give Rubinstein ten. Although the recording is old, it is well done and does not detract at all from the performance. My only regret is that Rubenstein did not record the rest of the Beethoven sonatas.

Flawless Renditions of Familiar Pieces.......2007-03-14

The 4 Sonatas represented here are probably among the most familiar of all of Beethoven's work to the general listening public. They are beautifully rendered by Arthur Rubenstein in a recording of very good quality. This is an ideal purchase for someone who is seeking an introduction to Beethoven's work since the music is highly accessable and the price is very affordable. Rubenstein's playing is basically straightforward and sensitive, perfectly suited to the 4 selections presented here.

I do not know classical music in the way that many of the people who have reviewed this work do. I cannot compare Rubinstein's performances with other pianists. I cannot analyze the technical qualities of his playing. I cannot really be a judge of the work at the level that most listeners of classical music would like.
I can however say that the deep pleasure given by this work comes in part of hearing familiar 'classical music' replayed. It comes too out of certain qualities of the playing, its grace, its lightness, its moving depth, its clear rushes of excitement.
One of the greatest of all pianists playing some of the greatest piano music ever written cannot help but inspire and move the listener.

Loved for his elegant style, Rubenstein applies it to Beethoven.......2006-06-01

When great pianists come to the the sacred Beethoven sonatas, they diverge into two camps. The first camp tries to serve Beethoven first, the second imposes a 'personal' style with secondary attention to the composer. In the first camp everyone would put Schnabel, Serkin, Annie Fischer, Wilhelm Kempff, Murray Perahia, and perhaps nowadays Andras Schiff and Leif Ove Andsnes. In the second would be Horowitz, Richter, Cortot, Rubenstein, and a panoply of earlier greats in the Lisztian romantic tradition. These were the unabashed stylists, whose fans want to hear a pianist more than they want to hear piano music.

Rubenstein's fans were particularly devoted to him--he was that rare thing, a loable human being who also happened to be a virtuoso--and since he was less agressive than Richter and less flamboyant than Horowitz, Rubenstein's gentle, sophisticated way with Beethoven, which could evoke Paris over Vienna, felt more agreeable. But it's not selfless by any means. Rubenstein is the anti-Serkin, bringing the same dreaminess to the Moonlight that he brings to Chopin, smoothing over the outbursts in the Appassionate so that it will be more civilized (but losing half of Beethoven's revolutionary genius in the bargain), and generally giving his audiences what they want.

On its own terms, this CD is a lovely example of the Rubenstein method. Personally, I side with the first camp, but I can see why many listeners so admire this epitmoe of sophisticated elegance who never slips into vulgarity or blatant showmanship.

Excellent recordings.......2006-05-26

I love these recordings! I think the interpretations Rubinstein offers are different (which is a good thing) from the "Beethoven specialists," which is very refreshing. This is especially evident in the "Pathetique" Sonata (my personal favorite). I have recordings of Ashkenazy, Pollini, Brendel, and Kempff, but the Rubinstein is my favorite (Interestingly enough, I'd say Ashkenazy is next on that list).

His "Moonlight" and "Les Adieux" performances are among my favorite recordings of those particular sonatas as well. "Appassionata," which he recorded the most, is still good, but better versions of him playing it exist.

This CD is worth the money.

25 Piano Favorites.......2007-01-09

This is my favorite classical CD since it is geared to a wide audience. Many of my friends and acquaintances enjoy it, too.

Good for the price............2005-11-30

I listen to this CD while reading or when I need inspiration to play the piano. There are many classic pieces here that will have many recognizable sections to the non classical music fans. The sound quality is not amazing but the essence and technical difficulty of these pieces can still be heard. Most of the songs are under 5 mins and there is a mix of faster and slower tempos.

This is a bargain bin CD that you usually see at Fry's Electronics. There are more detailed and comprehensive collections out there but for 5 bucks this isn't bad and you basically get what you expect. There are much better classical CD's out there of course but for a beginner compilation album, this one has a great price.

This cd of piano classics has become one of my favorites. Since I am a full-time student and work out of my home the music relaxes me during times of rest.

The Sound Quality Really Bugs Me.......2004-08-26

This is a good intro CD to famous piano pieces. However, the sound quality is really *poor*. Of course, what do you expect for the price? I'm sure there are better Piano Sample CDs out there that sound much better. It's worth the extra money, trust me.

Good Disc for the Price.......2004-01-19

A good compilation of excerpts from the rich and vast piano repertoire. Sure they are merely excerpts and are meant to just introduce the piano to someone unfamiliar with the instrument or classical music, but that doesn't mean that an experienced person can't just pop it into the CD player and enjoy.

While there's no classic recordings here or big names, most of the tracks are well played and acceptable in sound quality. There are some interesting pieces here that are unfamiliar to most, such as the Dvorak Humoresque or the Paderewski Minuet, as well as classics such as the Debussy Clair de Lune or the Mozart Concerto.

The rendition of the Rhapsody in Blue is a nice performance with a well done ending that may even be better than some other CD's made by big named pianists.

THE GREATEST OF CHOPIN PIANISTS.......2007-03-01

These are the earlier discs of Rubinstein's Chopin, recorded by HMV in London during the 1930's. It is less complete than his later recordings for RCA - no Sonatas, no Ballades, no Etudes. The sound is naturally of its time - but in many ways more natural than the sharply-lit, slightly edgy piano sound RCA favoured in the 50's and 60's. Nevertheless, these are the Chopin performances I return to most.

Rubinstein's natural affinity with Chopin is legendary. He seemed always able to capture precisely the right degree of rubato at exactly the right moment in these pieces. And he had a unique ability in his countryman's music to balance the lyrical with the impassioned, what seems completely spontaneous with what is clearly deeply considered. The Nocturnes here are, I think, the best you'll hear anywhere on disc. In the greatest of them - the Opp.37 & 48 sets, for example - Rubinstein gets the contrast between the dreamy nocturnal outer sections with the darker, more impassioned central sections just right. These are not salon miniatures in his hands but big works, if not in length then in content. And no-one can match Rubinstein in the elusive diversity of this complete set of Mazurkas. The two Concerti both have Barbirolli as the sympathetic conductor, following Rubinstein's lead in the ebb and flow of phrases and whole sections of these gorgeous and often maligned works. Interestingly the recording of Concerto No.2 (actually the first composed) dates from before the pianist's famous withdrawal from public performance to reconstruct his technique and his approach, that of Concerto No.1 from after. Perhaps one can detect a touch more maturity and refinement in his approach to the latter, but they are both ravishing performances.

Many of the performances on these 5 discs are the greatest Chopin you're likely to hear. And the ear soon adjusts to the somewhat old-fashioned recorded piano sound. This is a highly desirable set for any lover of Chopin and/or great piano playing.

This is my favorite album. I think that not even Rubinstein's later recordings attain this quality of musical involvment.

There is a fair amount of background noise, but the music helps to forget it rather quickly overall.

RECORDING QUALITY IS A FACTOR.......2005-02-10

Otherwise, I would have given 5 stars. The fact that these have a hiss (and you can practically hear him close the piano on several numbers) should be mentioned. I guess we are spoiled to audio quality, but this is an expensive collection and this fact was glaringly omitted. That said, I have enjoyed the recordings, in spite of the very audible hiss.

Strong, Committed Performances.......2006-02-15

Rubinstein knew all 32 of Beethoven's Sonatas by heart, but in public and on record, limited himself to the most popular half dozen or so. The four Sonatas on this CD--originally recorded at RCA Italiana Studios in the early 1960s--were, with the five Concertos, the core of Rubinstein's Beethoven repertoire.
Rubinstein's approach to the Pathetique is characteristic of his Beethoven playing: Tempos are sensible, avoiding extremes of speed or slowness; phrasing is devoid of artifice; pedaling is sparser than Beethoven's written indications, but many of Beethoven's contemporaries claim Beethoven over-pedaled; repeats are generally taken. Some purists will object to the way Rubinstein plays some of the grace notes and ornaments in the first movement, but there has been no conclusive evidence either way on the "correct" manner to handle them (Beethoven probably didn't care anyway).

This CD contains Rubinstein's only recording of the inescapable Moonlight Sonata. He performed it in public several times during the 1962-1963 season, and then dropped it from his repertoire. The first movement is played simply, even a little dryly, as is the second movement. But Rubinstein lets loose in the Finale, bringing the work to a stunning close. Nobody else could hit a piano that hard and still create such a beautiful sound.

The Appassionata was a favorite of Rubinstein's. He featured it in his earliest concert performances, played it almost to the end of his career, and recorded it three times. This recording is more successful than the previous two (the first was almost comically slapdash). Max Wilcox, the producer of the original recording, has noted that this was one of the few times Rubinstein became hampered in the recording studio, and many takes were required before Rubinstein was satisfied. But one could never guess that from listening to the resulting performance, it is totally organic and betrays no hint of being spliced together.

The Les Adieu Sonata rounds out the album, bringing a joyous conclusion to a wonderful recording.

RCA's SACD remastering has not radically altered the sound picture, but there is a greater sense of space around the piano. The packaging recreates the original cover art and liner notes.

The songs were played flawlessly, however, it's really quiet. When you turn up the volume, you will hear hissing in the background.

Piano Perfection!.......2005-10-16

Saw it on TV and thought the music was beautiful, but forgot to write the information down... but managed to buy it online (now I see it frequently at the music stores)and I absolutely love this album -- all my favorite pieces! (I'm not big on writing comments or reviews, but was compelled by the artistry and passion I heard throughout this CD!)

A Classic in Every Sense!.......2005-10-12

I overheard some people at the record store talking about this album - one guy was actually a piano teacher and couldn't stop raving about it. I bought the album on his recommendation and couldn't be happier - it's stunningly beautiful. Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonata is haunting and Chopin's "Minute Waltz" is spectacular in its precision and speed! This will make a great stocking stuffer at Christmas for my friends (... I'm getting them now cause I've gone to a couple places and they're out of stock). If you're into piano, this is truly a classic!

Great stuff, but allow for the age of the recordings.......2002-03-29

I'm glad I never encountered this Archduke trio recording in an LP transfer. A couple of generations of listeners were probably frightened away from pre-stereo recordings by inadequate transfer technology. I read somewhere this performance is "justly famous" but "miserably recorded". We are indeed fortunate in the digital era that the best restorer and transfer expert of recordings of the pre-tape era, Ward Marston, has had a hand in the Artur Rubinstein series. What you have in the Beethoven is a decent recording from 1941, after Mr. Marston's transfer. One should perhaps mute the upper frequencies more than usual, as this will eliminate anything remaining that might distract from the music. So you have before you an Archduke trio of legend and a most satisfying musical experience. The Schubert is not the Opus 100 that is perhaps more famous, but the Opus 99 trio. The recording seems to find the original masters perhaps less worn and therefore clearer and warmer. But this is all "essential" stuff for admirers of these artists. I plan to keep this recording of the Archduke trio as my primary one.

The best rendition of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4, Period!.......2007-01-02

I've been listening a lot lately to Beethoven's 4th and 5th Piano Concertos, and this 1964 performance of No. 4 by Rubinstein is the best I've heard. You can also see a film clip of his performance on the DVD "Art of the Piano." A truly moving and masterful rendition that Rubinstein plays, I think, at the perfect tempo, which is a little slower than other celebrated performances by his contemporaries, such as Wilhelm Backhaus. Rubinstein's performance of the Emperor Concerto is also beautiful, and to have both for the price of one CD is a steal.

Fine Quality Renditions.......2003-08-03

Beethoven is not as easy as he sounds. Sure, his concertos are not as difficult as Brahms's or Rachmaninoff's, but they do require a great deal of thought and interpretation, especially his fourth (which happens to be his finest in terms of form).

The fourth concerto is a great masterpiece-Rubinstein's favorite of Beethoven's actually. It has very poetic content and is perfect in it's design. (On a personal note, I'm currently working on this piece. I must say that it is very difficult to interpret in some places.) I think Rubinstein does a swell job.

The fifth concerto (the "Emperor") is played with much élan. This piece demands for a wide horizon of style and good technique. It too, can be difficult to interpret.

I think this disc is a fine model for students to follow, or for personal enjoyment. I hope you will disregard Mr. Nelson José de Camargo's review below. The sound is great, the performances are wonderful, and I am not ashamed that I own this recording in the least. I'm down right proud of it.

horrendous Beethoven.......2003-04-20

It's for sure the worst performance of these two great concerts I have ever heard. It applies not only to the performances, but also to the sound, that is quite poor. If you want a really good recording of these concertos, get the Kempff, Arrau or Pollini versions.

Beethoven's heart and soul.......2002-04-10

Arthur Rubinstein never wanted to go down in history as a major Beethoven performer; he had been a legend for his Chopin, Brahms and Schumann recordings, and, as for Beethoven, he probably didn't feel like looking for a "new way". Anyway, it's pretty interesting to hear a statement Rubinstein made in the beautiful 1970 movie "Rubinstein: l'amour de la vie": "I could accept the disappearance of a whole island from the face of the earth, but I couldn't live without Beethoven". It's Rubinstein's way to love music: a matter of heart and soul, not the result of so-called "philological studies". So that's Ruby's Beethoven: maybe classical in its approach and style, but with a firing excitement running through the whole performance. Compare this recording of the "Emperor" third movement with the "standard" Backhaus' rendition: if Backhaus seems to seat on every note, not to sound too childish or "naive", Rubinstein just jumps into music and lets it run through the most thrilling finale ever heard. Or listen to the beginning of the Fourth Concerto: tone quality and beautiful use of rubato allow Ruby to SING the introduction without choosing a too easy "Frank-Mills-like" approach.

Rubinstein recorded Concerto n. 4 four times, and I think this is the one to own, if you really can't have them all; his early recording with Beecham is also beautiful, but suffers from the effects of the odd Saint-Saens cadenzas; both n. 4 and n. 5 also appear in their splendor in the two other Ruby's all-Beethoven sets, with Krips (vol. 36) and Barenboim (voll. 78 and 79); in my opinion, anyway, this performances with underrated conductor Eric Leinsdorf and the splendid BSO are by far the best: Rubinstein is at the peak of his artistry, and the orchestra provides for a passionate and powerful playing.

First Rate Beethoven from Rubinstein.......2001-01-29

The recordings on this CD are from Rubinstein's second complete set of the Beethoven Piano Concertos (there is also a seperate Fourth Concerto, with Beecham, recorded in 1947).

These recordings, made in 1963-64, demonstrate Rubinstein was just as "on top" of this music technically as he was in the earlier set with Krips (1956) and much more "into" them musically. In addition, the playing is notably more alert and straightforward than in his later set with Barenboim (1975). To be sure, purists will quibble with Rubinstein's use of rubato, approach to ornamentation, (not to mention his use of Busoni's editions of Beethoven's cadenzas in the Fourth Concerto) but these performances are a joy from the first bar to the last. Leisdorf, with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, are to be credited with a fine accompaniment, far more detailed than in the earlier set with Krips.

All three sets of Beethoven Concertos from Rubinstein are worth having, but for those only able to obtain one--this is the one to have. The sound, which was pretty good to begin with, has been superbly remastered.
