The best Sibelius Violin concerto from decades.......2006-03-13

At last a Sibelius concerto performance parting from the virtuoso or fastly fluent Heifetz's style, or the sforzandos of the various Russian school violinists!
Kraggerud performs the Sibelius Violin Concerto, beautifully accompanied by the orchestra, with the poetical phrasing that is needed.Also the last movement is swiftly,exactly focused, and not the accustomed "Polonaise for polar bears".
The great violinist Riccardo Brengola, recently disappeared, still remembered to me in 2001 the Ferenc de Vecsey (dedicatee of the score) Sibelius Violin concerto performance in Rome, at Augusteo, in the year 1933, with these words:"very great violinist, very beautiful sound, phantastic technique". I think that Kraggerud polished and fluent style, not "showing" the virtuosity of the score, is one of the best ever heard in recent decades and by far more interesting that the Kavakos, Stern and the like.

Pallid Sibelius, Unmemorable Sinding Concerti.......2004-10-09

Although Henning Kraggerud, a young Norwegian violinist, is clearly a marvelous musician and a nifty technician as well, this recording of the much-recorded Sibelius Violin Concerto, in spite of a very nicely judged opening, remains rather undercharacterized, even pallid. The second movement is done best, and strangely enough it seems more energized than the quicker outer movements. The third movement, which ought to sizzle, simply doesn't. The soloist, by the way, is playing the Guarneri violin and Pierre Simon bow owned and played by Ole Bull, his great 19th-century Norwegian predecessor.

The Sinding Violin Concerto, which I'd never heard before, is fairly middle-of-the-road late German romantic in style and although all the right moves are there, it is let down by its undistinguished melodies. The first theme of the first movement is memorable, but it's downhill after that. One keeps thinking the piece is building to one of those glorious tunes we associated with, say, Bruch or Brahms, and then it never happens. This is an example of a composer with more craft than inspiration.

Included to fill out playing time on this CD are two short violin and orchestra pieces, one by each composer--Sibelius's lovely 7-minute 'Serenade in G Minor, Op. 69b,'(the second of his two Serenades) and Sinding's never-before-recorded 'Romance in D Major, Op. 100,' which, for me, is the most memorable Sinding on the program. It reminds me a bit of Dvorák, strangely enough. The Bournemouth Symphony, that yeoman of recording English orchestras, plays well but is slightly recessed in sound. The conductor, Bjarte Engeset, is competent but not outstanding on this disc; it sounds as if he is accommodating his soloist rather too much.

The bottom-line: Not a first pick for the Sibelius. Interesting for those who want to explore the music of Sinding further. Nice contribution by a young (early thirties) and emerging violinist, Henning Kraggerud.

Best Perlman Collection.......2004-02-28

Hi,

I think this is a very nice Perlman collection...Beautiful works selected from different Musical Eras and different styles...And Mr. Perlman is very succesful in all these types of masterworks...you can easily feel the Bach's crying words...Mozart's fun...Brahms's passion...Sinding's virtuosity...Wienlawski's Romantism...Khachaturian's hurry...and Rachmaninov's sentiments....and many others...
and also Israeli Orchestra did a very good job on this performance...They are like the third hand of Perlman...They work and feel like a family...
If you are a Perlman Fan, you must have been already bought this CD...if you are not or new to this performer it is time to meet him..and it is the way to meet him...go!!!

Plenty of Perlman.......2002-03-11

If you enjoy Itzhak Perlman and do not have very many of the selections on these discs, here is one way to get hold of them. Each of the four discs boasts a theme: 1. Baroque and Chamber Music, 2. Violin and Orchestra, 3. 20th Century Music, and 4. The Lighter Side. The selections are naturally limited to recordings Perlman did with EMI, but this represents quite a bit of his overall output. Among the recordings of the Sibelius Violin Concerto that I've heard, the one included here with André Previn and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one I enjoy immensely. I like the cinematic sweep of the Korngold Concerto; the Bach Violin Partita; the jazz selections written by Previn. There isn't much that I don't like here. Here is a compilation where variety is a key factor. If you're into variety and Perlman's style, this set gives you plenty of both.

Our Greatest Living Violinist.......2000-05-11

Almost 30 years ago, at Penn State while I was a student there, Itzhak Perlman visited, gave some lessons to aspiring violinists and gave the most astounding, memorable concert I've ever attended. Quite to the contrary of the fellow from Baton Rouge, Perlman was the consummate teacher who critiqued and encouraged students with far lesser talents, and he did it with class. This collection contains a number of recordings I already have but consider them worth having again in such a superbly arranged collection. His arrangements on the Hungarian Dances are the best!

Great music from a great man........2000-01-06

The sentiments of certain Baton Rouge residents notwithstanding, this is the consummate collection from a great artist AND a great humanitarian.

Perlman plays Bach quite well, but when compared to Hilary Hahn, Perlman comes out second best. Hilary captures the whole essence and spirit of Bach, and herr violin sings Bach in two, three, and four beautiful voices in perfect harmnony.

Thank God for Rosand.......2003-05-05

If Aaron Rosand was not around, I wonder if any of these obscure romatic compositions would ever get their due? Fortunately, Rosand has been out there for decades, championing music that everyone else seems to ignore.

Most of the composers on this albums are well-known, but not for these pieces. Some composers, like Goldmark & Svendsen, have unjustly fallen into obscurity. However, just because you may never have heard of the piece or the composer does not in any way take away from the quality of the music or the performance.

It helps also that this CD is dirt cheap! When a CD cost so little, it is hard to complain about the sound quality not being quite up to par. Personally, it is something I can live with.

Beautiful, moving pieces. Sound a bit muddy........2002-02-26

A "Romance" is generally a short, lyrical, piece of music, with an emphasis on emotion.

The best of them are stunningly beautiful, and this recording presents a number of the best. The most substantial piece of the set is Dvorák's Romance, which contains just the right blend of beauty and understated drama.

One of the more interesting inclusions on this disc is a set of three short romances by Clara Schumann, known mainly as the wife of the more famous Robert Schumann. Thus, fortunately, the disc is not made up entirely of DWG's (dead white guys). Her own attitude towards her music goes a long way toward explaining why so few women composed. She commented, "...a woman must not desire to compose-not one has been able to do it, and why should I expect to?" (Quoted from the liner-notes). Clara Schumann may not have been one of the great composers, but these little works of hers hold their own against any of the big boys on the disc.

The sound on this disc is a little muddy, but the performances are first rate.

Also included are Tchaikovsky's Sérénade Mélancholique; Sibelius's Humoresque, Op. 87, Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen and Ole Bull's Saeterjentens Sondag.
