Symphony 3 / New York Profiles / Symphony 1

Product Description

Amazon.com
This excellent anthology of mainstream American Romanticism leads off with Virgil Thomson's Third Symphony, a 1972 orchestration of his Third String Quartet. Other works here include Norman Dello Joio's heartfelt New York Profiles of 1949, Ulysses Kay's melancholy Fantasy Variations of 1963, and Jack Beeson's robust 1959 Symphony No. 1. These works came from earlier CRI and Bay Cities releases and represent the best of the kind of music created in the 1930s by composers such as Roy Harris and Howard Hanson. Indeed, each composer here spent some time, either as student or teacher, at the Eastman School of Music, where Hanson taught. This music was popular once and may be again. Time will tell. It is certainly worth anyone's acquaintance. --Paul Cook
