I love this bos set, especially the second one Edelweiss is simply great, it's filled with passion and truly shows the beauty of music.But if you had already bought Ave Maria and Edelweiss please don't buy this one, they are the same, this CD is just perfect!

Wow...That was my first word when I listend to this CD.

I like classical numbers more than like traditional songs of
other countries, so the 1st one was wonderful
(Of course as well as the second one.)

When you want to relax, you may choose the 1st one, but
if you want to be excited, choose 2nd one!!

You will feel as if you were out of this world.

When I received this album, I found that it was much, much more than I had expected. The angelic, pure, innocent yet DEFINED voices of these boys add the spark to your day. (at least to mine!)

The first CD is absolutely beautiful choral music which is really relaxing. I DO prefer boys' singing to adults, because it just sounds so much better.
When I bought the CD, I wasn't expecting much out of the second CD because I bought it for the first CD's sake, but the second CD turned out to be my real favorite.
Not that I don't adore the first one, but the second one is SO IRRESISTABLY CUTE!! whenever I listen to it, I keep on smiling and going "awww. isn't this cute!"
It is REALLY sweet and fun to listen to. I just LOVE this CDs and want to give 10 stars out of 5, but obviously there are limitations, so..

Well, if you like choral music, you won't regret getting this one.

Vienna Boys do it again.......2001-08-18

Their performance is just superb. If you like classical music. I find this elevating my spirits.

What can really be said about this two CD set except "Wow." The tone quality and emotion contained in the music is incredible, and I don't think there's another boys' choir out there who can match it. The rendition of Schubert's "Ave Maria" alone is worth buying the CD. Amazing. Between the two CD's there is a great variety of music as well, ranging from the soft, sad "Locus Iste," to Johann Strauss' polkas. There is a piece for every mood. These CDs are more than worth the money and rank among the favorites in my collection.

A ***MUST HAVE*** ALBUM for lovers of CHORAL & SACRED MUSIC!.......2002-04-12

If you have a any appreciation at all for the human voice raised in song, you will absolutely LOVE this album!! I have had this album on cassette since 1990, but until three weeks ago, I'd never listened to the entire cassette. I had only listened to the first song on side A because I was that was the version of "Ave Maria" I was familiar with. THIS
ALBUM is the best compilation of choral music ever!!! It's not just different versions of "Ave Maria"; it is a compilation of songs whose theme is Maria. I particularly like the Giovanni Battista Pergolesi duet, "Stabat mater: Sancta mater istud agas". You would have to be DEAD not to fall madly, deeply and completely in love with this song. All the songs on this album are GEMS!!! I highly recommend this album. I'm buying the CD version myself, as I have been playing my cassette to death. Buy the CD already!!!!

Una versión poco refinada de las misas de Bruckner. El coro no se entiende bien, es un poco sucio y con un vibrato que ensucia más la grabación. Además, toma tempos muuuuuy lentos en algunos pasajes, lo que termina por aburrir.

Poor Tuning in the Mass in E minor.......2004-01-12

I think that Jochum's interpretation is excellent in this recording but I take issue with the performance of the chorus in the E minor Mass. The sopranos often reach for the high notes and come out under the pitch...regularly. Anything above a C# is a bit of an adventure for them. The chorus, as a whole loses pitch in unaccompanied sections. It is difficult to listen to this disc. I wish I had purchased the recording on the Hyperion label.

I tend to echo the sentiments of the prior reviewer. The Masses are some of Bruckner's greatest compositions and deserve the same level of respect as do his symphonies. When I was listening to the Mass No. 3 in E minor I could have sworn there was a rolling orchestral crescendo that was also used at least in part in the great adagio of his Symphony No. 7 (also in E). The texts of the Roman Catholic liturgy are delivered entirely in Latin and the choral and soloist contributions are impeccable in phrasing, diction and beauty of tone. The Benedictus passages have some extremely beautiful parts for the voice and the string sections, and nothwithstanding the lack of a violin solo can be mentioned in the same breath as that of the Beethoven Missa Solemnis. The Et Resurrexit sections of the Credos have thundering power and majesty. In some respects the Masses are a bit more closely argued in terms of musical structure and cohere better than the earlier symphonies. Eugen Jochum conducts with selfless dedication, letting this powerful music speak for itself. The playing of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra is superb, and the highly individual sound of the Mass No. 2, written solely for brass and wind instruments, almost (as the documentation implies) feels like Palestrina brought into the Romantic era. The remastering from the original issues, from 1962 to 1971, is very successful and there is a wonderful bloom on the choral sound. The spacious acoustics of the Herkules-Saal, which was also one of the venues for Jochum's first survey of Bruckner's symphonies with the same orchestra (and the Berlin Philharmonic), are heard to very good effect. Full translations of the Liturgy are printed in German, English and French.

This issue is a classic and its release as part of Deutsche Grammophon's Originals series cannot be too strongly welcomed.

Magnificent.......2000-03-23

Being long under the impression that Bruckner's major achievement lay in his symphonies, the motets and the Te Deum, this CD-set came as quite a revelation to me.

Being a very devout Catholic, Bruckner left us with sublimely beautiful music in these Masses. Although al three masses were composed in his forties, the music strongly bears his signature: elements of mystery, striking thematic material, and deep spiritual devotion.

Jochum has a powerful vision, the singing of the choir is ethereal, and the recording after all these years retains a vivid presence.

The music has a strong emotional effect on me; listening to it is a spiritual experience.

Someone once said that God gave us music so that we could pray without words. This is the music I would expect to hear upon arrival in Heaven.

Massive Music.......2004-10-26

I had Te Deum originally on audio cassette, and played it until it was worn. I am so thrilled that this beautiful and moving piece is now on CD. The quality of soloists is fabulous and the chorus is strong. The string entrance to Te Deum always gives me the chills. Absolutely a wonderful addition to anyone's choral/sacred collection!

Building on the enormous success of the first Agnus Dei disc, its successor offers more of the same musical mood, but with a few surprises too. One of the hits of the first album was John Cameron's arrangement of Elgar's Nimrod, using the words of the Lux Aeterna. Here he really rolls his sleeves up and similarly tackles the Albinoni-Giazzoto Adagio (using the words of the Beatitudes) and the Intermezzo from Bizet's second L'Arlésienne Suite (using the text of the Agnus Dei). The role of the orchestra (the excellent ensemble Capricorn) has been expanded, and Edward Higginbottom himself has arranged a delicious string septet accompaniment to Brahms's Geistliches Lied. Much of the music is of the kind that the choir obviously eats for breakfast--which is not to say that they ever sound bland or tired, just at home. The one weak track is Monteverdi's Beatus Vir, which needs voices of more sophistication and agility than the boys can provide. That aside, this is another album that should do their reputation no harm. --Warwick Thompson

After owning Agnus Dei I for years, and somehow misplacing the CD, I decided to buy both I and II from Amazon. Of the CD's, I is still my favorite. Agnus Dei II is a decent CD, but it doesn't have the fluidity or the dynamics that the first disk has. I guess I got spoiled with the first disk.

Agnus Dei II is a really good choral CD with a more otherworldly sound than most choral offerings. But the first Agnus Dei is better, amazing really. Own both, but if you only want one, get the first one.

I bought this CD because it said Eamon as an artist. WTH? I can't find Eamon anywhere on this CD. It says Eamon on the other one, but I'm not even going to try. Never again will a buy a CD associated with Agnus Dei.

Albonini's Adagio (Beatitudes) is an Italianate emotion feas.......1999-06-11

I happened upon this album while looking for some choral works for a church choir. Not schooled in the literature, I had never heard of Tomaso Albinoni. His Adagio ("Beatitudes") is a choral emotion feast in Italian style, the likes of which I have never heard before. Unless...did the Coppollas (pere et fils) use it in the soundtrack to Godfather 3? I'm not sure. Great piece. The rest of the album is okay. Standard fare.

Awesome music - fidelity a bit lacking.......1999-02-16

The opening song "The Beatitudes" by Albinoni is incredibly moving, so much so that the other songs have a hard time comparing. Overall, excellent, although the fidelity could be greatly improved. I had to crank up my volume 30-40% higher to achieve a comparable volume and noticed some distortion (in the recording, not my system) that was a bit distracting. Still, an outstanding CD.

This is the second installment in a recording project originally inspired by Pope John Paul II's visit to Paris in 1997 to celebrate the Worldwide Days of Youth. A surprisingly effective anthology of mostly sacred liturgical music, the selections here occasionally give the impression of "bleeding chunks" (as in the majestic opener from one of Monteverdi's sublimest creations, the 1610 Vespers) but have been chosen with imagination. Chung coordinates his forces in larger choral pieces with power and vertical balance, making a standout of the Beethovenian mystery and drive apparent in the "Sanctus" from Schubert's Mass in E-flat. Contributions by Cecilia Bartoli find the mezzo in top form--listen to her finely spun line interweave with the oboe d'amore in a selection from Bach's B Minor Mass--and as evocative as bright stained glass in Fauré's "Pie Jesu." Bryn Terfel brings charismatic presence to his one selection here (also from the Fauré Requiem). Also included are the interminable "Song for Athene" by John Taverner and a sentimental but earnest performance by Andrea Bocelli in Eric Levi's hymn for the world, "I Believe." --Thomas May

Just regular.......2004-11-18

I am giving only 2 stars to this CD because, though featuring really "famous" names such as Bartoli and Terfel, the overall sound is not as good as one expects it to be, maybe due to sound technicians, I could not say.
But what I think it's WORST about this album, is the Laudate Dominum (from Visperae de Confessore, by Mozart) performance by the Santa Cecilia Academy Choir. Being a choir alt singer myself and having sang the piece a few times, it pierces my ears to hear the altos out of tune IN THE FIRST LINE OF THE CHOIR SCORE!!!! How could the recording company put this in the market? Did nobody in the recording notice it? And the choir conductor? I would be ashamed of having a recording of my choir out of tune.

Uniformly good, except for one rather nasty exception.......2003-11-05

This collection (Also released as "Voices from Heaven", I believe) provides a nice retrospective of 400 years of sacred music. The choir is strong overall, and Bartoli and Bocelli (in his one song) prove admirable soloists, especially in the "Pie Jesu".

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Terfel, and for the "Libera Me" in general. What was the purpose of Faure carefully cutting most of the Dies Irae and hellfire passages if the singers attempt to put it all back in in an overdramatic rendition?

Knocked My Socks Off!.......2002-10-11

As a choral singer, I am familiar with most of these works, but this recording knocked my socks off when I heard excerpts from it on a local classical music radio station. Not only does this CD group together some of the best music anywhere, but the performances are fantastic. The choral group has a remarkable precision and clarity in their sound that is admirable. And wonderful soloists. In summary, you might have heard many of these pieces elsewhere, but the impact of having these great performances all on one CD is amazing.

Romanian conductor Sergiu Celibidache's attitude toward recordings of music was the polar opposite of Glenn Gould's: he found them to be dangerous distortions that could never recapture the holistic experience of the live concert hall. Since his death in 1996, Celibidache's heirs have nevertheless decided to combat the proliferation of dubious pirate discs with an authorized edition on EMI. This recording is from the series's second volume, which illustrates the conductor's particularly deep, lifelong affinity for the music of Anton Bruckner and draws from concerts he gave with the Munich Philharmonic in the '80s and '90s (one of the most probing and incandescent is Celibidache's account of the Ninth Symphony).

Bruckner was once described as a "God-intoxicated man." His large-scale, symphonically rich Mass in F Minor (first performed in 1872 and later revised several times) is a statement of faith that is at once humble and resonant with the assurance of inner peace. Celibidache's broad tempi allow the music to build from within and show a command of the special breath that is unique to Bruckner. The result often seems to step outside the ordinary experience of time, with a sense of spaciousness that conveys both the austerity and mystery of a Romanesque basilica. Grandly massed passages of fugal momentum are shaped with a granitic beauty, while the ecstatic figurations of the Et incarnatus est (its solo violin and viola accompaniment reminiscent of the Benedictus from Beethoven's Missa Solemnis) seem to float like incense. Even in the most sonorous climaxes, Celibidache maintains a sensitive transparency of choral and orchestral textures. Whatever the current vogue for New Age "spiritual" music, this inspired performance confirms how truly transporting Bruckner's aesthetic vision remains. --Thomas May

A MOST EXPRESSIVE AND WONDEROUS WORK!!.......2006-05-07

Having never listened to any sacred works before, I was unsure of what to expect with this Mass. However as I have become more and more amazed and moved by Bruckner's symphonies I decided to try a work, a work that dealt most directly with Bruckner's faith. Regarding Celibidache this was the first recording I had heard of this amazing conductor. I had watched the Celibidache dvd and became intrigued with this intelligent conductor. It is known that he loved Bruckner's music perhaps above that of any other composer, so I decided to try the FMinor Mass. After the second listen I started to understand and love this work. For the third listen I went to the library and grabed the score. All I can say is if you like or love Bruckner's symphonies you will thoroughly enjoy this powerful work. The harmonies are simply pure Brucknerian beauty. The only quibble I have is with the occasional cough(most of Celibidache's recordings are live). However, once you immerse yourself in this work everything but the music disappears. As with all Bruckner's orchestral works words cannot describe, so run and get this recording of Bruckner's Fminor Mass, conducted by an amazing maestro. By the way the acoustics and orchestral sound are exquisite.

Celibidache At His Most Inspired.......2005-06-13

I have owned nearly a dozen recordings of Bruckner's 3rd Mass over the years, but Celibidache's interpretation really stands out from the rest. Unlike Celibidache's mostly very slow Bruckner symphony recordings, the tempos here are fairly conventional. This reading has some of the most beautifully spiritual playing I have ever heard in ANY choral work on disc. The audience is reasonably quiet, and EMI's sonics are warm and immediate.

But, to complicate matters, there is more than one Celibidache "live" recording of the Mass #3. This EMI CD captures a performance of 6 March 1990. There was also a reading from 13 September 1990 on Exclusive CD EX92T37/38, which has a different bass (EMI's Matthias Holle was replaced by Hans Sotin). The performances are very similar (there is a bit more audience coughing on Exclusive, which is likely why EMI chose the quieter March reading; the orchestral sound is pretty much identical in both). That 2-CD set also contains amazing accounts of Hindemith's "Mathis der Maler" Symphony (Munich Phil. 1981) and the Overture to Weber's "Oberon" (Stuttgart 1982).

I warmly recommend this EMI version of Celibidache's uniquely reverent Bruckner Mass. It clearly surpasses every version I have heard from other forces (e.g., Jochum on DG, though Maria Stader's soprano is very beautiful, Karl Forster's on LP, etc.). I still keep the work's first recording on a Vox LP conducted by Ferdinand Grossman, but it is Celibidache that I reach for more often. If you can find the Exclusive CD set, it offers an equally spiritual reading, plus some astonishing examples of Celibidache's way with Hindemith & Weber. And a perfect complement to this Mass is the fine film by Jan-Schmidt Garre called "Sergiu Celibidache and Bruckner's Mass in F Minor: In Rehearsal." That is available on an ArtHaus DVD, and it provides a fascinating glimpse at how the Romanian maestro built the foundation for this magnificent interpretation.

Most possibly the greatest conductor of Bruckners symphonies in the 20th century, Celibidache in this performance of the 3rd, makes you wonder if you ever really heard Bruckner performed before. Truly miraculous music making.

A stunning performance.......2000-03-14

Bruckner's Mass in f, like nearly all of his music, goes beyond being spiritual in the broadest sense, to literally reaching for infinity. This performance by Sergiu Celibidache and the Munich Philharmonic comes as close to scaling the heights of the infinite as any performance I have ever heard. From the very beginning, Celi's broad phrases and resplendent sonorities bring an almost unimaginable purity and beauty to the work. At 77 minutes, it seems Celi should have stretched this piece to the breaking point, but instead time seems to stand still and we are left with a performance that I wish would never end.
