For the first time on CD, these two famous anthologies of carols from the 15th century to the 20th, 29 represented, including many popular ones but also a lot of discoveries.
Magdalen College, Oxford played an important part in the Victorian revival of the celebration of Christmas and especially of carol singing. A key figure in this was J. R. Bloxam, Fellow of Magdlen, the man who re-instated the dignity of the May Morning ceremony of singing at dawn on the Great Tower. The records suggest that Bloxam first held a musical entertainment for the Magdalen choristers in his rooms on college on Christmas Eve in 1840 or 1841 and it became tradition.
