Those who don't know any better are apt to dismiss Deborah Cox as another R&B/dance diva determined to cling to the spotlight by whatever means necessary, including a giant genre-leap. Those who've been listening carefully, though, will check their doubts at Destination Moon's door. On this, her fourth disc, Cox sidles up to jazz--the jazz of her role model Dinah Washington--with subtlety and surefooted grace; along the way, she makes something of a masterpiece. From classics such as the title track to lesser-known but deeply felt compositions such as "I Don't Hurt Anymore," she avoids the temptation to rub a modern sheen over these songs and settles contentedly into the mood Washington carved for them instead. "This Bitter Earth" gets the "mm-hmm" treatment Dinah delivered so well, and "Misery" and "New Blowtop Blues" don't dream of belying their blueswoman roots. Best of all are the more delicate tracks: "Look to the Rainbow" captivates with a contemplative sadness, and "Blue Skies" is a natural wonder as beautiful as a dose of pure azure on a cloudless day. --Tammy La GorceAlbum Description
Platinum-selling recording artist Deborah Cox reinterprets the classic songs of Dinah Washington on her Decca debut, Destination Moon. Destination Moon thrusts the R&B/dance diva into whole new territory, showcasing her range and scope as an artist capable of tackling jazz, blues and "big-band" with ease and confidence. Deborah Cox's first exposure to Washington came very early, when she was a little girl. "I first became aware of Dinah when I was growing up, when I was about 8 or 9 years old" she says. "A lot of jazz was played about the house. I heard my mother playing a 45 of "This Bitter Earth" -- this first song I had ever heard from Dinah. It was the richness and the tonality of her voice that I gravitated to." For the arrangements and the production, Deborah turned to the highly-versatile New York-based music man Rob Mounsey, whose credits with such diverse performers include Paul Simon, Steely Dan, Aretha Franklin and Tony Bennett to name a few. The record was made live in the studio, with 40 musicians in the same room with her, playing and singing in real time under Mounsey's direction. "I'm doing this to broaden people's awareness of what I can do and also for the sheer love of her music." As a result, Deborah's homage to Dinah Washington does not lean overwhelmingly toward one particular style. It was designed from the beginning to be a compendium of several of Dinah's idioms - the big-band swing of "All Of Me" and "Destination Moon," swaggering R&B ("I Don't Hurt Anymore)," the blues that earned her the misleading nickname "Queen of the Blues" ("Misery," "New Blowtop Blues"), the lush ballads that put her on the jukeboxes of Middle America ("What A Diff'rence A Day Made," "This Bitter Earth").Customer Reviews:

Jazz & Blues with Deborah !.......2007-06-25
While her hits have generally called on her to be very angry or very sad, these classic songs allow her to be at turns gentle, sassy, reflective, happy and wry. The productions and arrangements are reminiscent of the golden era of era of Billie, Sarah, Dinah and others, but contain enough surprises to keep them from sounding old-fashioned.
Deborah - who shifted from pop siren to Broadway star with Aida, further expands her range to include jazz, blues and big band. Cox and her backing musicians were recorded live in the studio, playing and singing in real time. The effect pays off as Cox accurately renders each song with her own textures.
No one expects Cox to abandon the dance-floor (she just released a new dance track with Tony Moran), but her latest offering "Destination Moon" allows her to explore another musical landscape with glowing results.
Deborah takes the jazz route on "Destination Moon", a tribute to one of her all-time heroines, Dinah (The Queen) Washington. Whether you view it as a tribute album, a jazz debut or just a collection of good music, this album succeeds on all levels. From the swinging big-band to piano-voice ballads, Cox captures the essence of Washington, yet adds her own touches. Washington's milestone recordings are here. Cox gives "What a Difference a Day Makes" a mid-tempo turn with strings, getting the Queen's innocent voicing, but injecting more feeling into the lyrics.
"Baby, You've Got What It Takes" comes at us as a fast shuffle. Cox fills "This Bitter Earth" with Washington tics - the up-speak at the end of phrases, the self-satisfied "mmh-hmmm" after a line. Washington first made her name as a blues singer, and Cox lays the blues on in "Misery" and "New Blowtop Blues", that classic mean-woman lament where she sings of her run-in with a jealous ".45-packin' mama."
On "Destination Moon", focusing on Washington, the jazz singer, dishing out several of the standards most closely associated with her career, Deborah also wraps her powerful pipes around gems like "I Don't Hurt Anymore", "September in the Rain" and "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes".
Producer/arranger Rob Mounsey pulled out all the stops for these sessions, surrounding Cox with a 40-piece orchestra that laid down a gorgeous foundation for her to build on. And she did just that.
In an interview conducted to promote her new album, , Cox said she recorded this record for two reasons -- to pay tribute to an artist who had so inspired her and to show that she, like Washington, was capable of doing a lot more musically than some people might have expected.
She succeeded on both counts. It's very nice work.
Think long, rainy afternoons, dinners for two and early mornings on the patio.
This is one of the top CD of this Year!!!.......2007-06-20

Erik Wollo's works are overlooked gems of modern instrumental music. From his home in Norway, Wollo's been sending out missives of mood and ambience since the mid-1980s with albums like Silver Beach and Solstice. Last year's U.S. release of Guitar Nova explored the acoustic-guitar side of this musician in multilayered, overdubbed soundscapes that retained the ambience and structure of his electronic works. With Wind Journey, he returns to synthesizers but keeps his electric guitar at hand for some gloriously heroic solos, especially on "Dream Line." A subtle, tugging ostinato pattern builds into layers of keyboard orchestrations topped by guitar, which starts out in a pastoral, acoustic mode but segues into a soaring lead solo that recalls Steve Hackett during his Spectral Mornings era. Wind Journey is centered by Seasons Suite, a 10-part sequence of moody vignettes. Erik Wollo's roots in progressive rock are clear and he uses them to articulate a cinematic music. While Wollo lives in a country with some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes in the world, he composes much of his music in a basement studio. The worlds he creates are strictly from the imagination, and what a vivid imagination it is. --John DilibertoCustomer Reviews:

An interesting pairing of two Ames Brothers albums.......2006-07-05
The first lp on the cd was the reissue of their 1956 lp The Ames Brothers With Hugo Winterhalter (RCA Victor LPM-1228, 1956). 8 of those 12 songs were first released on a 10" lp from 1954 entitled "It Must Be True" (RCA Victor LPM-3186). These recordings are all 100% true mono recordings, not rechanneled stereo or fold-downs of rechanneled mixes. I did notice one song had a minor tape dropout in it, but for a 50 year old tape that was to be expected, though the dropout occured in one channel only, leading me to wonder the exact tapes used for this lp on cd. Some of my favorite songs on this album's part of the cd are The Alphabet, Ol' Man River, The Anniversary Song, and Not You Not I.
The second lp on this cd is the Destination Moon lp. With all the talk of a space race in 1960, the Ames brothers jumped on board and recorded a whole album of moon and space related songs. This album is entirely in true stereo on this cd and the sound on these tracks is fantastic. These recordings still sound great, and on vinyl this is one of the Ames Brothers most collectable albums thanks to the cover art (not to mention this one was probably their biggest selling album ever). Some of my favorite songs on this part of the cd include Beyond The Blue Horizon, I'm Shooting High, No Moon At All (a re-recording of one of their earlier Coral label hits), Destination Moon and East Of The Sun.
While this pairing of songs may be an odd choice for a cd reissue, I am very thankful these songs are even on cd. The sound is very clean on these recordings and for 45 to 50 year old master tapes they sound exceptionally well.
This cd is for any fan of the Ames Brothers hits, because it shows that the group was more than just their few comedy-styled recordings, and these can be enjoyed by almost anybody. You'll get into the music by the time the first song on the cd ends, and will stay into it until the last song is finished. It's been almost 2 years since the last reissue of two full Ames Brothers albums on cd and i can only hope that we will see more from the Ames Brothers on cd, as they had several other classic albums that deserve to be released.

Album Description
Got romance? Get swept away by Clairdee's romantic voyage, DESTINATION MOON. With moonlit romance in her voice, she "delivers an exquisite reminder that classic tunes with their timeless beauty last forever," writes Dan Ouellette, Down Beat. Listeners will delight in Clairdee's luminous and soulful approach to the lyric. "The songs I sing speak to my experience. They are personal vignettes," the San Francisco-based jazz vocalist says with a smile.Influenced by the joyful storytelling of Nancy Wilson and the warm tones of Nat Cole, Clairdee's rich contralto takes you on a sensuous expedition with such classics as "I've Got The World On A String," "Star Eyes," and "Moonglow." Most of the songs date from the 1930s and `40s, but Clairdee isn't particularly interested in nostalgia. She says, "My arrangements often place familiar tunes in unfamiliar rhythmic settings. For example, we've decanted the Gershwin's `They Can't Take That Away From Me,' and poured it into a new context with a contemporary rhythm while maintaining the classic swing elements."
Describing her unique approach to the American Songbook, Clairdee says, "I personalize these beautiful, durable songs without making them unrecognizable telling each story in a setting that I believe today's listeners can identify with. The wonderful truth is that the lyric has as much meaning today as seventy-five years ago."
With soothing, alluring vocals that become soft and whisper-like in pockets, Clairdee offers a sexy, come-hither request as she sings "When Lights Are Low." The title song, "Destination Moon," beckons an out-of-this-world trip for two, while "My Future Just Passed" recalls the thrill of love-at-first-sight. The disc concludes with "Beautiful Friendship," a tale of falling in love with a friend and the joyous discovery of reciprocal love.
So, light the candles, slip into something comfortable and get romanced with Clairdee and DESTINATION MOON.

This is truly fantastic music. Although Claredee's voice is deliciously unique, the closest analogy to the classic jazz vocalists would perhaps be Ella, in that Claredee never strains to show off her (well-developed) technique -- instead letting the tight-knit group's wonderfully and poetically-selected repertoire of great American songs work their magic. And there is (much) magic in this music...Check it out!

Destination The Swingin' Moon.......2004-12-07
Michael enlisted help from his top-notch musicians from both Swingerhead and The Coconut Club Orchestra plus some very special guests for these sensational CDs. 'Michael and Friends' completed their amazing recording sessions inside the famed 'Studio A' at Capitol Records Studios in Hollywood (where Frank Sinatra recorded the great songs) and in Mike's bi-coastal studios.
Every song on this cd is a treasure. A much needed addition to the Swingerhead catalog. Michael sings the songs in his own refreshin' swingin' style. Notable is guest vocalist Michelle Amato on "Mambo Italiano." Michelle captures the sassy, sexy style of Rosemary Clooney in her early years. Also very enjoyable; the Earthgirls join Michael and Swingerhead on "Hey Baby, I'm Home."
Currently, the band is performing in Florida with occasional jaunts to California.
Apparently the previous person meant his review to be about the "Swingerhead Christmas" album. This is not a Christmas cd.
Michael is a rising star this christmas.......2002-12-10
For those who dont know Michael, he and his band are at the top of the " Swing Tree " and this album will have you denting a hole in your car steering wheel as you tap out the beat to the
sounds of Michael and his band.
Highlights are " We Three Kings " sung like you have never heard it before ( my priest would turn in his grave ). Michael's " Fireside " voice is shown off to perfection in "The Christmas Song "
This album will make your Christmas, merry, bright and will have you asking Santa for anothe Michael Andrew album asap.
