Those who don't know any better are apt to dismiss Deborah Cox as another R&B/dance diva determined to cling to the spotlight by whatever means necessary, including a giant genre-leap. Those who've been listening carefully, though, will check their doubts at Destination Moon's door. On this, her fourth disc, Cox sidles up to jazz--the jazz of her role model Dinah Washington--with subtlety and surefooted grace; along the way, she makes something of a masterpiece. From classics such as the title track to lesser-known but deeply felt compositions such as "I Don't Hurt Anymore," she avoids the temptation to rub a modern sheen over these songs and settles contentedly into the mood Washington carved for them instead. "This Bitter Earth" gets the "mm-hmm" treatment Dinah delivered so well, and "Misery" and "New Blowtop Blues" don't dream of belying their blueswoman roots. Best of all are the more delicate tracks: "Look to the Rainbow" captivates with a contemplative sadness, and "Blue Skies" is a natural wonder as beautiful as a dose of pure azure on a cloudless day. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description

Platinum-selling recording artist Deborah Cox reinterprets the classic songs of Dinah Washington on her Decca debut, Destination Moon. Destination Moon thrusts the R&B/dance diva into whole new territory, showcasing her range and scope as an artist capable of tackling jazz, blues and "big-band" with ease and confidence. Deborah Cox's first exposure to Washington came very early, when she was a little girl. "I first became aware of Dinah when I was growing up, when I was about 8 or 9 years old" she says. "A lot of jazz was played about the house. I heard my mother playing a 45 of "This Bitter Earth" -- this first song I had ever heard from Dinah. It was the richness and the tonality of her voice that I gravitated to." For the arrangements and the production, Deborah turned to the highly-versatile New York-based music man Rob Mounsey, whose credits with such diverse performers include Paul Simon, Steely Dan, Aretha Franklin and Tony Bennett to name a few. The record was made live in the studio, with 40 musicians in the same room with her, playing and singing in real time under Mounsey's direction. "I'm doing this to broaden people's awareness of what I can do and also for the sheer love of her music." As a result, Deborah's homage to Dinah Washington does not lean overwhelmingly toward one particular style. It was designed from the beginning to be a compendium of several of Dinah's idioms - the big-band swing of "All Of Me" and "Destination Moon," swaggering R&B ("I Don't Hurt Anymore)," the blues that earned her the misleading nickname "Queen of the Blues" ("Misery," "New Blowtop Blues"), the lush ballads that put her on the jukeboxes of Middle America ("What A Diff'rence A Day Made," "This Bitter Earth").

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic CD.......2007-07-21

I was so totally impressed with her voice and her style. Jazz is definitely Deborah Cox' forte'!! I bought two and gave one to a friend who feels exactly the same way. Hope to hear more from her along the "Jazz" lines....

5 out of 5 stars Love her voice.......2007-07-18

I guess I'm a big sucker for souful, strong, powerful voice. Me loving this album proves it again. It's all jazz standards, nothing new. In the past year, getting new albums from Diana Ross, Natalie Cole, Diana Krall, it's like one disappointment after another. So when I heard this new album, I was more than happily surprised how good it is. If you're a fan of jazz standards, I bet you'll like this one.

5 out of 5 stars Deborah Shines.......2007-07-05

From her self-titled debut, to One Wish, to The Morning After to Destination Moon, Deborah's albums are like mini-greatest hits compilations, and Deborah scores again with her interpretations of Dinah Washington's songs on Destination Moon. Deborah has the best voice in contemporary music today, and this album continuously showcases her incredible range and talent. Personal favorites will include the title track, "Misery", and "This Bitter Earth". The album's best songs are "What a Difference a Day Makes" and the closing "Look to the Rainbow". Flawless from start to finish, Deborah again creates a masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars Jazz & Blues with Deborah !.......2007-06-25

Deborah takes the less is more approach with her first collection of standards. With a restraint that gives the arrangements plenty of room to breathe, she croons beautifully, showing us different facets of her vocal personality.
While her hits have generally called on her to be very angry or very sad, these classic songs allow her to be at turns gentle, sassy, reflective, happy and wry. The productions and arrangements are reminiscent of the golden era of era of Billie, Sarah, Dinah and others, but contain enough surprises to keep them from sounding old-fashioned.
Deborah - who shifted from pop siren to Broadway star with Aida, further expands her range to include jazz, blues and big band. Cox and her backing musicians were recorded live in the studio, playing and singing in real time. The effect pays off as Cox accurately renders each song with her own textures.
No one expects Cox to abandon the dance-floor (she just released a new dance track with Tony Moran), but her latest offering "Destination Moon" allows her to explore another musical landscape with glowing results.
Deborah takes the jazz route on "Destination Moon", a tribute to one of her all-time heroines, Dinah (The Queen) Washington. Whether you view it as a tribute album, a jazz debut or just a collection of good music, this album succeeds on all levels. From the swinging big-band to piano-voice ballads, Cox captures the essence of Washington, yet adds her own touches. Washington's milestone recordings are here. Cox gives "What a Difference a Day Makes" a mid-tempo turn with strings, getting the Queen's innocent voicing, but injecting more feeling into the lyrics.
"Baby, You've Got What It Takes" comes at us as a fast shuffle. Cox fills "This Bitter Earth" with Washington tics - the up-speak at the end of phrases, the self-satisfied "mmh-hmmm" after a line. Washington first made her name as a blues singer, and Cox lays the blues on in "Misery" and "New Blowtop Blues", that classic mean-woman lament where she sings of her run-in with a jealous ".45-packin' mama."
On "Destination Moon", focusing on Washington, the jazz singer, dishing out several of the standards most closely associated with her career, Deborah also wraps her powerful pipes around gems like "I Don't Hurt Anymore", "September in the Rain" and "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes".
Producer/arranger Rob Mounsey pulled out all the stops for these sessions, surrounding Cox with a 40-piece orchestra that laid down a gorgeous foundation for her to build on. And she did just that.
In an interview conducted to promote her new album, , Cox said she recorded this record for two reasons -- to pay tribute to an artist who had so inspired her and to show that she, like Washington, was capable of doing a lot more musically than some people might have expected.
She succeeded on both counts. It's very nice work.
Think long, rainy afternoons, dinners for two and early mornings on the patio.

This CD is Amazing!!! Deborah Cox vocals are outstanding! I was very surprised to hear that she had a new CD release. They should be promoting this album like crazy. At first i heard that this was a throwback album so i wasn't sure how to take this but i went and purchased it anyway and i'm amazed at her depth of talent. Her Phrasing is just perfect and the live instrument just add to the excitement of the music. I would have to say that this is the top album released this year as a tribute.
Also check out Amel Larrieux new CD its the same kind of music. I love it!
Enjoy and reccomend!

Erik Wollo's works are overlooked gems of modern instrumental music. From his home in Norway, Wollo's been sending out missives of mood and ambience since the mid-1980s with albums like Silver Beach and Solstice. Last year's U.S. release of Guitar Nova explored the acoustic-guitar side of this musician in multilayered, overdubbed soundscapes that retained the ambience and structure of his electronic works. With Wind Journey, he returns to synthesizers but keeps his electric guitar at hand for some gloriously heroic solos, especially on "Dream Line." A subtle, tugging ostinato pattern builds into layers of keyboard orchestrations topped by guitar, which starts out in a pastoral, acoustic mode but segues into a soaring lead solo that recalls Steve Hackett during his Spectral Mornings era. Wind Journey is centered by Seasons Suite, a 10-part sequence of moody vignettes. Erik Wollo's roots in progressive rock are clear and he uses them to articulate a cinematic music. While Wollo lives in a country with some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes in the world, he composes much of his music in a basement studio. The worlds he creates are strictly from the imagination, and what a vivid imagination it is. --John Diliberto

5 out of 5 stars Ambient music that takes me far, far away!.......2003-04-24

I have purchased cd in the summer of 2002. Back then, all I could think of doing was listen to 88.5 on the radio and hope that they will play music from Erik Wollo. The first song I heard was "Dream Lines". The music didn't seem familiar to me at first. I didn't consider it really ambient but it turned out that it was. After listening to it, I was into it very much. I never heard such a song played like that before and I knew it was something I would like. Wollo plays the guitar in a way that the sound echoes in my head and makes me feel like Im somewhere far and distant. In a short time, I heard "Wind Journey 1". That was amazing. After I listened to it few more times, I was into it so much that I couldn't help buying it from Amazon.com. Just about every beat and sound seems to echoe as if it was played outside where nothing surrounds you and where the music can travel and be heard. Listen to the samples and decide. Buying this cd is something to consider.

5 out of 5 stars What a surprise and completely different from the last CD.......2001-09-27

The last Eric Wollo CD featured wonderful virtuoso guitar, most closely akin to a "fingerpicking" style. Each piece was different, almost like a "best of" CD. This CD is completely different in that the artist uses the guitar as part of a series of thematic atmospheric tone poems based on the idea of wind and its forms and effects. The overall feel of the music is very ambient, with the guitar used less as a melody-maker, and more as a symphonic, electronic instrument, almost like a timescape. The orchestration includes atmospheric electronic soundscapes within which the artist creates mood music of the highest quality. I was absolutely fascinated by the CD on first hearing it, and it only gets better with each re-playing as I discover new nuances to the music. What a master of the guitar this man is. I highly recommend that you take a listen to this CD, and take a journey into the wind with Mr Wollo. This is a thinking person's delight!!!

5 out of 5 stars An interesting pairing of two Ames Brothers albums.......2006-07-05

I've been a fan of the Ames Brothers for many years, and I'm only 21 as of this writing. For years I have longed to see all of the Ames Brothers albums for Coral/Vocalion, RCA and Epic reissued on cd. I got my wish for the Epic albums finally, and this cd has taken two of the RCA albums (and a soon to be released cd on Taragon Records [who did a top notch Best of the Ames Brothers cd] has their RCA Christmas lp reissued in it's entirety for the first time in 49 years, with first time stereo mixes on many of those 1957 songs). When I first heard of this cd, i had heard that it would be coming out nearly a year before it actually did, but I didn't know what albums were going to be on it. When I finally found out, i thought "wow, what an odd pairing of albums". I can't complain, though, i was getting two of their albums on cd in their entirety.

The first lp on the cd was the reissue of their 1956 lp The Ames Brothers With Hugo Winterhalter (RCA Victor LPM-1228, 1956). 8 of those 12 songs were first released on a 10" lp from 1954 entitled "It Must Be True" (RCA Victor LPM-3186). These recordings are all 100% true mono recordings, not rechanneled stereo or fold-downs of rechanneled mixes. I did notice one song had a minor tape dropout in it, but for a 50 year old tape that was to be expected, though the dropout occured in one channel only, leading me to wonder the exact tapes used for this lp on cd. Some of my favorite songs on this album's part of the cd are The Alphabet, Ol' Man River, The Anniversary Song, and Not You Not I.

The second lp on this cd is the Destination Moon lp. With all the talk of a space race in 1960, the Ames brothers jumped on board and recorded a whole album of moon and space related songs. This album is entirely in true stereo on this cd and the sound on these tracks is fantastic. These recordings still sound great, and on vinyl this is one of the Ames Brothers most collectable albums thanks to the cover art (not to mention this one was probably their biggest selling album ever). Some of my favorite songs on this part of the cd include Beyond The Blue Horizon, I'm Shooting High, No Moon At All (a re-recording of one of their earlier Coral label hits), Destination Moon and East Of The Sun.

While this pairing of songs may be an odd choice for a cd reissue, I am very thankful these songs are even on cd. The sound is very clean on these recordings and for 45 to 50 year old master tapes they sound exceptionally well.

This cd is for any fan of the Ames Brothers hits, because it shows that the group was more than just their few comedy-styled recordings, and these can be enjoyed by almost anybody. You'll get into the music by the time the first song on the cd ends, and will stay into it until the last song is finished. It's been almost 2 years since the last reissue of two full Ames Brothers albums on cd and i can only hope that we will see more from the Ames Brothers on cd, as they had several other classic albums that deserve to be released.

4 out of 5 stars Sci-Fi Soundtrack with the Classical Experience.......2000-04-27

This album is an excellent reissue of the original soundtrack from the classic George Pal science fiction film DESTINATION MOON (Eagle-Lion Pictures, 1950) in Technicolor, which began the entire sci-fi movie genre of the 1950s. The film had strong competition from a cheap little black & white B-movie titled ROCKETSHIP X-M (Lippert, 1950) which was actually rushed into production and released before George Pal's movie; but Pal's is the true classic. RXM holds its own as a B-movie, but Pal's picture was a major box-office hit and is an A-picture which unfortunately did not have big-name stars because Pal wanted to spend most of his film budget on the special visual effects, which were excellent and state of the art, in Technicolor, for 1950. The music score, by talented film composer Leith Stevens, is first-calibre and is not only one of his finest film scores, but one of the best for any sci-fi film ever. Pal liked it so much he asked Stevens to score two more of his pictures: WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE (1951) and WAR OF THE WORLDS (1953). The music actually presages John Williams' symphonic orchestral scores for STAR WARS, et al, by over a quarter century! The music is wonderful, and evokes the mysteries of outer space and the thrill of Mankind's first rocket to the moon. It also succeeds as symphonic music for a classical experience. This recording, while not the exact original recording from the film soundtrack, is excellent; originally recorded in Stereo (for the first time) in 1959 and released as Omega Records Omegadisk OSL-1003, and is conducted by Heinz Sandauer and the Omega Orchestra. The album was released in 1960 to wide acclaim, and reissued by Citadel Records for Starlog Magazine in 1979, and on CD in 1994.

I don't know too much about these guys, but this album rocks. Lo-Fi, mono, gritty, repetitive, distortion-full guitar licks, but whatever. Old school rock & roll with all the right attitude and catchy hooks. If you like your rock raw and real, go for it. This is my fave of theirs, "Bad CAse" is fantastic. They cover AC/DC's "Long Way To The Top" and it's great too. "Down to the Dogs" and all the others (except maybe "As Teardrops Break" which is kinda sappy and maybe gimicky)also will have you groovin' and shakin'.

Got romance? Get swept away by Clairdee's romantic voyage, DESTINATION MOON. With moonlit romance in her voice, she "delivers an exquisite reminder that classic tunes with their timeless beauty last forever," writes Dan Ouellette, Down Beat. Listeners will delight in Clairdee's luminous and soulful approach to the lyric. "The songs I sing speak to my experience. They are personal vignettes," the San Francisco-based jazz vocalist says with a smile.

Influenced by the joyful storytelling of Nancy Wilson and the warm tones of Nat Cole, Clairdee's rich contralto takes you on a sensuous expedition with such classics as "I've Got The World On A String," "Star Eyes," and "Moonglow." Most of the songs date from the 1930s and `40s, but Clairdee isn't particularly interested in nostalgia. She says, "My arrangements often place familiar tunes in unfamiliar rhythmic settings. For example, we've decanted the Gershwin's `They Can't Take That Away From Me,' and poured it into a new context with a contemporary rhythm while maintaining the classic swing elements."

Describing her unique approach to the American Songbook, Clairdee says, "I personalize these beautiful, durable songs without making them unrecognizable — telling each story in a setting that I believe today's listeners can identify with. The wonderful truth is that the lyric has as much meaning today as seventy-five years ago."

With soothing, alluring vocals that become soft and whisper-like in pockets, Clairdee offers a sexy, come-hither request as she sings "When Lights Are Low." The title song, "Destination Moon," beckons an out-of-this-world trip for two, while "My Future Just Passed" recalls the thrill of love-at-first-sight. The disc concludes with "Beautiful Friendship," a tale of falling in love with a friend and the joyous discovery of reciprocal love.

So, light the candles, slip into something comfortable and get romanced with Clairdee and DESTINATION MOON.

5 out of 5 stars The journey is worth the reward!.......2002-12-06

We met and heard Clairdee for the first time at the Cambria Jazz Festival in May 2002. The auditorium was sparse but the atmosphere cozy. We sat on directors chairs as the band played their first number. Then Clairdee was introduced and this lovely lady began to capture our hearts and soul with her exquisite singing. For the next hour we were in bliss as Clairdee took us on a journey of songs from her destination moon album. After a couple of songs, Clairdee joked about seeing rose....rows and rows of empty chairs. After her wonderful performance, Clairdee invited the audience to come down and say hello. We purchased her CD and received an autograph and a hug! Now, how many of you can say that after watching a show. We LOVE Clairdee's music!

5 out of 5 stars Mmmmm Mmmmm Good.......2002-09-18

Absolutely loved the smooth sultry voice of Clairdee. Her interpretations of jazz standards is exciting and plays well at our cocktail parties. I've bought copies of this CD for gifts!!!

5 out of 5 stars Falling in love with jazz.......2001-07-10

Clairdee has a magical way with words and music that bring these jazz classics to life. It is the best way I know to set the mood for a romantic evening -- or even to unwind after the kind of tense day that seems to defy romance. The instrumental support for the lyrical voice is equally luxurious and romantic.

5 out of 5 stars Destination Moon, Stars & the Universe!.......2001-03-21

Clairdee's voice is magical! For the die-hard romantics, this CD belongs in your collection. The title song on most CDs is usually the only one worth listening to...Clairdee brings new life to the classic oldies on all the songs! If she was reaching for the moon, she has far surpassed her goals! My only question....When Can We Expect More From Her?!!

5 out of 5 stars You gotta take this Lunar Trip!.......2001-03-18

I believe Amazon has a $-back guarantee? If so, you have nothing to lose by giving this CD a shot. I doubt anyone would want to return it anyway, once they hear the luscious vocals, beautiful instrumental stylings, and tasteful arrangements on every track. (As one of many examples, listen to pianist/arranger Ken French's soulful vamping for the intro. to "They Can't Take that Away from Me...")

This is truly fantastic music. Although Claredee's voice is deliciously unique, the closest analogy to the classic jazz vocalists would perhaps be Ella, in that Claredee never strains to show off her (well-developed) technique -- instead letting the tight-knit group's wonderfully and poetically-selected repertoire of great American songs work their magic. And there is (much) magic in this music...Check it out!

5 out of 5 stars Destination The Swingin' Moon.......2004-12-07

Dust off and get your hi-fi's ready for some new stereophonic recordings! On September 10th 2002, Michael Andrew Records simultaneously released two new, long awaited, albums. `Destination Moon' and `Michael Andrew Pays Tribute to Frank Sinatra' featuring interpretations of well-known classics with his Swingerhead Big Band.

Michael enlisted help from his top-notch musicians from both Swingerhead and The Coconut Club Orchestra plus some very special guests for these sensational CDs. 'Michael and Friends' completed their amazing recording sessions inside the famed 'Studio A' at Capitol Records Studios in Hollywood (where Frank Sinatra recorded the great songs) and in Mike's bi-coastal studios.

Every song on this cd is a treasure. A much needed addition to the Swingerhead catalog. Michael sings the songs in his own refreshin' swingin' style. Notable is guest vocalist Michelle Amato on "Mambo Italiano." Michelle captures the sassy, sexy style of Rosemary Clooney in her early years. Also very enjoyable; the Earthgirls join Michael and Swingerhead on "Hey Baby, I'm Home."

Currently, the band is performing in Florida with occasional jaunts to California.

Apparently the previous person meant his review to be about the "Swingerhead Christmas" album. This is not a Christmas cd.

Michael Andrew swings open the door to a very hip Christmas.
For those who dont know Michael, he and his band are at the top of the " Swing Tree " and this album will have you denting a hole in your car steering wheel as you tap out the beat to the
sounds of Michael and his band.
Highlights are " We Three Kings " sung like you have never heard it before ( my priest would turn in his grave ). Michael's " Fireside " voice is shown off to perfection in "The Christmas Song "

This album will make your Christmas, merry, bright and will have you asking Santa for anothe Michael Andrew album asap.
