Farberman's Still Excellent Choice for Michael Haydn.......2006-01-22

Back when digital records first appeared Harold Farberman recorded a number of Michael Haydn symphonies with the Bournemouth Sinfonietta. All of these were bright well-conducted performances which helped expand our auditory awareness of Haydn's brother as symphonic composer. These performances were issued here and there on CD, but this CD claims to offer takes not issued on record. If you are familiar with these forces in the earlier issues and liked the performances you will find this issue very comparable. It does not sound like rejected takes.
The pieces themselves reveal a ready abundance of those lyric qualities Michael Haydn's fans - and there are quite a few - admire. Remarkable indeed are momentary bursts of contrapuntal richness, such as he wrote for the Allegro Molto of Perger symphony #9.
If you're curious to try more of Michael Haydn, but are not a fan of church music, you might consider his string quartets, which I find very fine indeed.
