Album Description

Manowar is a band that has set standards, broken records and won great accolades during its storied career. Known to their worldwide supporters as the "Kings Of Metal", the band has constantly redefined heavy metal by combining peerless musicianship and song writing with their undeniable commitment to true metal and their devoted fans. The band has always made the solemn pledge to create original music that is louder than hell and stronger than steel. The long standing lineup of vocalist Eric Adams, guitarist Karl Logan, drummer Scott Columbus and bassist Joey DeMaio is truly a force to be reckoned with in the studio and on stage. In addition they are the originators of the musical styles known as power metal and true metal.

As Manowar now prepares to unveil their tenth studio album, expectations from fans are higher than ever and Manowar are sure to exceed those expectations. The new album Gods Of War is Manowar's first entry in a cycle of concept albums; each a tribute to a different war god. Gods Of War brings out the greatest of Manowar's musical attributes by utilizing both epic song structures and dramatic narratives. Much like Ragnarok - the final battle at the end of the world - when listening to Manowar's epic saga, the earth will shake, the walls will crumble and only true fans of metal will remain standing, heads held high, with the triumphant glimmer of a battle well-fought in their eyes.

Gods Of War features brand new cover artwork by the world's leading fantasy artist Ken Kelly, as well as a scorching mix done by the unparalleled Ronald Prent.

Besides the normal Jewel Case version, Gods Of War will also be released as a limited edition in an embossed metal slipcase containing a high grade mediabook bound in leather.Furthermore, this limited edition will feature a bonus DVD with unreleased material about the making of this album and some special behind-the-scenes footage. A double-vinyl LP in a gatefold sleeve will also be available.

In their career Manowar has released 9 studio albums, two live albums and 5 DVDs with sales of over nine million records worldwide, as well as silver and gold records and numerous other industry awards. The last studio album Warriors Of The World was a critically-acclaimed worldwide chart topper, reaching gold status in Germany.

3 out of 5 stars Gods Of War??.......2007-07-23

Warriors of the World
Their last album 'Warriors Of The World' was MUCH better. Production wise and sonically this album was very good, but it had no rythmic 'catches' or 'hooks' to make you want to listen to it again. The story-line of this concept album is like the book of Revelation from a Satanic point of view. I think Joey DeMaio really beleives he is a warrior for Wodin (commonly spelled Odin). I think he has lost his mind.

1 out of 5 stars Horrrr..Horrrr..HII! Pardon!!.......2007-07-12

I am a Manowar fan for more than a decade and this is the worst album to date. Like a Sleep medicine.

The songs are nothing new. They are sleeping, because they sound exactly like the other (last 2-3) albums. Enough!

When the start doing some good music?

This album is a shame !

3 out of 5 stars Kings of Metal?.......2007-06-22

Pretty much most of the reviews here say what I was going to say...So I will save it. But I will say...King Diamond. Concept Artist..Great Albums every one(except The Eye), he doesn't need or have 9 minutes of classical nonsense. Classical is good, I like it...But not when I want to hear METAL!! The actual METAL songs on this CD (few) are good, except for that last cheesy Bonus Track...CORNEY!!. I've been a fan for a while, but ever since Louder than Hell they got less a less metal...So Less filler.......MORE METAL!!!

4 out of 5 stars An Epic opus that has fans torn - I like it! .......2007-06-17

Metal has had some great concept records in its nearly 40 years existence. Seventh Son of Seventh Son, Nightfall in Middle Earth, Operation Mindcrime, Helstar's Nosferatu, Savatage's Streets, most King Diamond etc.

However when the gods (er kings) of metal decide to do the same thing, people run the other way.

Why I must ask?

In their 25 years as a band, Manowar have never been adverse to taking risks, its just that they kept these risks under a relatively stable umbrella in hopes of not alienating their fanbase. Symphonies, choirs, instrumental solos, all these elements have been featured on previous records to much aplomb.

With Manowar's 2002 opus, Warriors of the World, the band changed their sound a bit. It wasn't a far cry from their early work, MIXED with the elements of Kings of Metal. The "triplet gallop" rhythm was brought back (think Hail to England the song), the choir vocals brought back, and even a lower guitar tuning were brought in to make a more "epic" focus.

I loved Warriors of the World, in fact, with its more complex (than anything since before fighting the world) melodies and even the Elvis cover (!) I thought it was their best since Sign of the Hammer.

Now that Manowar has been very influenced by Rhapsody (though a little simpler and less ponderous), they come out with an album that leaves their modern fanbase scratching their heads. Its with this I say that it took me awhile to have Gods of War grow on me, and when it did, it grew like a fungus. The acapella parts, the symphonic parts, are just much catchier than Rhapsody (now called Rhapsody of Fire) in my eyes. They're a lot more refined and simple, and this might have something to do with it. Also, there is plenty of METAL to be found in this record, from the title track to the very cheesy "Die For Metal" bonus track (which btw, is not very musically similar to Kashmir, despite the similar rhythm. Musically on guitar its closer to the Clarivoyant by Maiden, other than the rhythm itself).

I don't think the narration is at all engaging however, and the sequel to "A Warrior's Prayer" definitely leaves me cold, as well as the usual "touching" Manowar ballad. I probably prefer Warriors, but I still love Gods of War. I think as a whole they succeeded, though I think songwriting wise its a small step down from Warriors of the World.

"Swords in the Wind" from that album is probably in my top ten Manowar songs of all time.

All I say is, give it a chance!

Triumph Of Steel seems way more ponderous than this in ways, and also way oversimplified.

I wouldn't say it belongs in the top tier of metal concept albums, but I think people have to view it as a concept record or "rock opera" to enjoy it more.

My top five Manowar (not neccesarily in order):

Into Glory Ride

Sign of the Hammer

Kings of Metal

Warriors of the World

Gods of War.

3 out of 5 stars Good album when there is actual music played.......2007-06-13

Best songs are Gods of War and Die for Metal. These are real Manowar tunes. The other "songs" are good clean Manowar, but there is way too much dialogue on this one.
The dialouge would have been better if there was more music written to it. Then you wouldn't be skipping to the next song trying to find the "music". The boys need to spend more time on just doing straight songs. Think about what Into Glory Ride would sound like with the production quality of Gods or War?

Album Description

Guitar virtuoso Luca Turilli, best known for his work as lead guitarist, co-composer and co-founder in film score metal band Rhapsody, has presented us with his new band: Luca Turilli's Dreamquest. Not wishing this to be viewed just as a side project, Luca asserts that Dreamquest is an additional outlet for the abundance of overflowing musical ideas of this prolific composer. Fear not Rhapsody fans, Dreamquest, while an entirely separate band, will not interfere with Rhapsody's progress. The debut album, Lost Horizons introduces a new style and technique to Luca's already mighty repertoire, enriched by modern elements: new metal, opera, techno-electronic music and gothic-symphonic atmospheres.

Luca Turilli's Dreamquest is the fulfillment of a dream that Luca has had in mind for many years and he is looking forward to the opportunity to perform Dreamquest material in a live forum as soon as possible. The music on Lost Horizons combines powerful metal instrumentation with angelic, operatic, female vocals to create a sound that might best be described as 'Symphonic Electro-Metal'. The first single Virus, is a prime example of the majestic musical flavour that Dreamquest is made of, while the operatic Sospiro Divino showcases the boundless possibilities presented by this exciting new band. Although favourable comparisons to popular acts are inevitable, make no mistake: Luca Turilli's Dreamquest is a fresh and unique experience

5 out of 5 stars "Life's what you make of it - grasp it!".......2007-03-04

That's from track 10, and, as far as I'm concerned, one way to grasp life is to listen to music such as this. Usually I listen to a new CD for about two weeks before deciding on a rating. Two days were all it took for this one! If you've read my other reviews you know that I'm a big fan of the female operatic voice combined with power metal. It is always nice to find something new in this genre that sounds good, and this sounds very good. It's not quite Nightwish or After Forever, but it is way up there and easily in my five star range.

I'm not crazy about Turilli's Rhapsody works; they are OK I guess but not something I would rave about. What he has done here is completely different and I am raving about it. The lyrics are much more poetic, the melodies more varied, and most of all, there is the vocalist Myst, which is obviously short for mystery. All the CD insert says is "Myst - voice." There is no other information, no picture, nothing. Whoever she is, she has a beautiful voice which can be powerful or moderate or soft with an impressive range. Apparently some people think she is Floor from After Forever but it does not sound like her to me.

All 13 tracks are very listenable. The only one I have a little trouble with is number seven, where Myst's voice is modified electronically, which to me is blasphemy. However it is only done in short sections so I still listen to it. My favorite track is nine, which has one of the most powerful reprises anywhere. The song blasts off with it and then finishes by repeating it three times, with the middle one being mostly a cappella. Very effective indeed!

One more thing concerning the ratings so far on this item. There are mostly fours and fives and then two with only one star. That proves my theory that beauty is entirely in the ear of the beholder. I'm curious to know if the two people who consider this CD junk are fans of Nightwish, After Forever or Epica. If they are not, I wish they would just leave it alone. I could go rate a bunch of rap CD's with one star also, but what good would that do anyone? (Please see my profile for a brief discussion of my rating philosophy.)

4 out of 5 stars Not a kid, just don't have my own Amazon account........2007-03-02

First thing I must say about this album is.. The singer's range is just amazing, and her voice is quite beautiful.

Now, I'll admit this, I'm not a Rhapsody fan and I've never listened to Luca Turilli's solo project. But for some reason I just HAD to get this album, and I'm glad I did.

The opening song Virus is an excellent opener, and my favorite song on this album. While I completely enjoy this album, I do grudgingly have little to say about it because, while it is excellent it just doesn't grab me (other than the singers voice.)

Over-all, if you enjoy metal or just good music I'd recommend getting this album.

1 out of 5 stars listen to the biggest luca fan ever.......2007-02-26

seriously I worship luca but this release is failure. No double bass. No speed. No Luca solos. Just listen to Prophet of the last eclipse if you want to be inspired. This album i have listened to countless times but i just cant recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-02-22

i cant think of words to describe this.. no words have been invented to describe how amazing this is..
im not going to spend alot of time describing each track. just go out and buy this masterpiece..luca turillis genious shines through again.. i cant help but forget whats going on around me when i put this on.

4 out of 5 stars This goes great with my goth rock collection.......2007-01-10

No longer power metal..like it better than alot of my goth rock. Powerful, catchy, fun..cool but defintely goth rock. Luca just don't get lazy.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Epic, but . . . .......2007-07-04

I'll take you through this as I experienced it, starting with the purchase.

The first thing you notice - other than the nearly-thirty dollar price tag - is the metal cover. It's not shiny plastic or cardboard with a film over it; that's real metal. It's startlingly heavy, too - when you pick it up the first time, you'll heft it automatically just to get a feel for it. The metal case wraps around a black-bound book that contains the Gods of War CD on the left, the booklet in the center (bound to the book, not loose) and the DVD to the right. The artwork on the discs and the booklet are a bit more racy than the usual cover you see - there are undressed fantasy-style artwork women adorning all three, so fair warning if you're touchy about that. Not that most Manowar fans would be, I'm guessing.

The booklet is written entirely in what is known among scholars as the Elder Futhark runic alphabet. I've studied it for some time now on my own and was startled to see it used for this, but pleased. There's a definite pro-and-con to this - the runes really amp up your feel for the Viking atmosphere for this album, but there's no English translation for non-rune readers. They include a guide in the back, but you have to translate it yourself. I'm fairly accomplished at reading them and it took me a while, so the casual reader should be aware that this will take them a long time. It's mostly a bit of a history lesson about Odin and the Aesir mythology anyway.

In the interest of being thorough, I should mention that they take liberties with the runic alphabet; EF doesn't use some of the letters our alphabet does (no C, Q, V, X, or Y) and actually has three runes which represent pairings of letters - NG, TH and AE (the long E sound). Some of the substitutions they use make sense (K for C, Y for AE) but they use the NG rune for Q and the TH rune for X. So if you're a real scholar of the runes or if you're trying to really learn the runes from this, you might want to look at other sources for information so that you don't get confused.

On to the music - and here's where I got my slight sense of disappointment. I enjoy orchestral music as well as metal, and I'll be the first in line to say that having an orchestra back a metal band can really make a truly epic sound. The problem is that at times it's more like a metal band backing an orchestra. There are some great songs on here - King of Kings is amazing, and Sleipnir gets looped constantly on my CD player - but there's also a lot of, well . . . pomp and pretension. There's times when there's no doubt it's Manowar blowing you away, and then there's times when you just can't believe that it's Manowar putting you to sleep. The Army of the Dead tracks are a bit different; they're not heavy, but they set mood successfully - I get the feeling that they meant several other tracks on here to set the mood but succeeded only in sounding sad. While anyone familiar with the story of Ragnarok and Odin's destiny would say that it is indeed a sad story, you don't pick up Manowar to feel melancholy. And if you do, you get Swords in the Wind - which manages to get a truly epic feel while being sad.

Speaking of which, I can't understand why they didn't put Swords in the Wind on this album as a bonus track - and why they DID put die for metal on. While I like the song, it doesn't make any sense to put it on an Odin-themed album. It's very much out of place and frankly a poor choice by the band.

Overall, I'd give the album itself three stars, but the excellent packaging and my love of the subject matter will get it another star. For anyone looking for typical Manowar, this isn't it. For casual fans or for those who just like Viking-themed material, give it a try.

The DVD is frankly pointless. I had hoped for music videos or maybe live concert footage, but it's mainly ads. Ads for their guitars, their printing company, their photographer . . . there's a brief bit where the band talks about the Manowar philosophy of making an album. Oddly, Joey DeMaio never makes an appearance for that. Just the other three. In fact, you only see him briefly in the photography segment, and only as he poses with the other members. If you're thinking of buying this version because of the DVD, forget it - get the cheaper regular version.

4 out of 5 stars Why?.......2007-06-14

Is more than half the album/CD soft metal? I realize that the songs kick in eventually but this is a bit of a dissappointment. And I don't usually put down Manowar. I still want to hear and see them live.

5 out of 5 stars GODS OF WAR UNITE US ALLL!!.......2007-06-12

First off, to anyone reading this review, disregard the naysayers or opinions of other reviewers on here who give this stellar work of genius anything less than five stars...
That being said, this is in my opinion their best work to date since the timeless classic. "Into Glory Ride". Integrating elements of that record with the bombastic, Wagnerian overtones of this one, conclusively, I can say that Manowar have created the perfect balance. I LOVE the inspiration from themes of Norse Mythology (coupled with the homage to the mighty Norse Gods) juxtaposed with the narrative effects present throughout the album-I am glad to see that Manowar has incorporated and championed the pro-Viking theme with a fair amount of dedication! The use of orchestral effects that pervade the album are brilliant and help create the mood and atmosphere in terms of what the mighty Norseman stood for. Take that with the thunderous, crushing riffs, one can visualize the imagery all powerful Thor as he swings Mjollnir (the hammer of Thor) across the sky, beckoning the "sons of Odin" into battle. Buy this record no matter what..It sure beats the faceless stream of garbage oozing from the sewer pipes of MTV and of our trendy, commercialized, pop culture. To Victory or Death!! See you in Valhalla!

5 out of 5 stars Manowar returns and it was worth the wait........2007-05-15

Manowar has returned after many years with a great new studio album and it was worth the wait. At first listen I wasn't blown away by it, but the more I listen the more I like it. The album is a grand concept done in a Manowar way, orchestrations, narration, choirs, and heavy metal. All hail Manowar.

5 out of 5 stars Manowar...The Soundtrack.......2007-05-13

At first listen you might think have I purchased the right cd. There is no Manowar, it's all classical music. the cd has a soundtrack feel to it. There is also a narrator who has that Orson Wells touch to it.

the cd booklet is all written in Norse. They give you a guide to translate. Once you translate the 10 pages you can happily say you can read and write in Norse. I know I can.

Overall if you love Manowar, you'll grow to love this cd. Oh by the way, this is the first part of a trilogy. This is also the heaviest cd I have ever purchased.

this along with louder than hell are manowars worst albums. If you want good manowar by into the glory ride, or any of their 80's albums.

5 out of 5 stars Manowar warriors of the world.......2006-10-18

Heavy, beautiful and diverse, sounds like no one but manowar,a mark of true greatness, ultra fast- mid paced -heavy ballads-great vocals -great musicianship, cant say enough, this has put them over the top in europe home of true metal people,if you fit in that category, buy and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars A great CD with a lot of variety.......2006-08-05

This was my first experience with Manowar, and I am impressed. Their lyrics are somewhat untraditional with heavy references to Nordic mythology and history. However, most of the tracks have a driving, exciting feel that really pump you up as you listen.

My favorite track on this CD is "Call to Arms". It's a rallying song that would be great either playing games (where I first heard it), or say, starting a sporting event. "Warriors of the World" also has this feel of getting everyone all riled up for something exciting to happen.

However there are also some calmer tracks on the CD, some of which are instrumental. One song, "Nessun Dorma" is done entirely in Italian with an operatic feel, and is a tribute to the mother of one of the band members. Needless to say, it is not metal at all.

If you were unfamiliar with the group, a first listen of this CD would probably make you think that not all these songs were performed by the same band. This CD is a showcase of the many talents of this group, because they can make both awesome and beautiful music at will.

Not only are they talented musicians, but contrary to a lot of metal groups, they can also sing as well as scream.

I would encourage a first time listener to preview "Call to Arms". If you don't feel awesome after hearing it, this CD may not be for you.

4 out of 5 stars Regreso con Gloria........2006-06-30

5 out of 5 stars manowar,into glory ride.......2006-10-23

manowar with there death to false metal slogan were definately on a crusade ,as always doing there own thing- being original,it was a time when thrash just started and was super popular, manowar went against the grain to seperate themselves from the pack, slower more grinding musically ,it heralded the coming of drums of doom scott columbus ,heavy hitting taken to the next level for its time, eric adams taking his vocals to where no man has gone or been to before, ross the boss the most under rated guitarist in metal-classy melodic soloing on every song ,every solo very distinct and memorable, and joey demaio using his original and unique sounding bass to roundup the soundscape, these recordings have bridged the gap between metal and classical music, this kind of started that viking metal genre.manowar showing why they are huge in europe and one of the most enduring and important metal acts of all time.into glory ride,it was great than and its still great today, true metalers wont be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Metal de los 80'.......2006-06-30

5 out of 5 stars my first introduction to the kings of metal!1.......2005-12-21

I am very dissapointed because i only read one reviewers review on this great epic album.Anyway,I first heard this record way back in 85 while my friend give me a copy of Metallica Ride the lightning in a C-60 tape, he recorded on the last few minutes of the tape 3 songs from manowar " into the glory ride ". I am a great fan of metallica, but I been blown away by manowar's unique sound and i'm hooked.all my friends are into metallica at that time but only i remain a loyal fan of Manowar for 20 years until now. This album serves as my all time favorite Manowar album. All Hail!!!

4 out of 5 stars Don't Judge an Album by it's Cover.......2005-09-13

You know, as much of a die hard Manowar fan as I am, and trust me, I listen to Manowar EVERY day, I laugh each and every time I see this album cover. Like Kiss meets Conan the Barbarian! And when I bought this album for the first time as Geffen records import, I thought that I was going to be greatly dissapointed. Most sophmore efforts can be after all. However, I hit play and sat back and braced myself for the worst. Starting out like an audio from a z-grade skin flick, it quickly picks up at the same tempo as the first album "Battle Hymns" with the song 'Warlord', a possble continuation of 'Death Tone'. As we move on in the album though, things get slower and more brooding. This is also the debut of their new drummer Scott Columbus. As I said, this album does slow things down a bit, but musically is quite elaborate. Apparently most of these songs were recorded in one-take sessions, genuinely giving it a "live in the studio" feel. With the exception of the first track, this whole album is themed in the days of warriors, wizards, demons and battle. And Scott's drumming is aptly suitable for this with the galloping rythms on 'Gloves of Metal' and 'Gates of Valhalla'. The former being a fantastic example of the classic rock abilities of guitarist Ross "The Boss" and the near operatic vocal abilities of singer Eric Adams. Joey DeMaio's bass playing is simply heavy and dark with flashes akin to Spanish Flamenco guitar style, as evidenced on the second track 'Secret of Steel'. The song 'Hatred' is one of those songs that sometimes I'm in the mood for, sometimes I'm not. Again, a long, slow, dark ode to hate with a long instrumental break in the middle, that returns to vows of destruction and ending in a speeding frenzy before blowing out to the winds. The song that follows is for me all the justification one needs for buying this. 'Revelation' has it all. The pounding of drums like hooves of horses, the ever escalating rythms of the guitar and bass with fantastically classic solo breaks, and of course the vocals that soar higher and higher and higher......... and then all clears the top of the mountain to come bearing down hard giving no sign of remorse. The ending song 'March for Revenge' is the longest of all of these lengthy tracks, clocking in at 8min. 29sec. Once again, this is a story song that would be retold a few more times on later albums with more refinement.
In all, not a bad album but a bit much for most who like simple, pointless thrash songs that have more in terms of speed that they certainly do in true musical ability. One must have true appreciation, and moreover knowledge, of what ability is in this music to enjoy this album. In other words, if you are impressed with three string power chords being hammered on to death and unintelligable lyrcs screamed repeatedly, you will not like this album.

    Album Description

On October 24th, 2006, Manowar, the undisputed Kings of Metal, will unleash their long-awaited new single The Sons Of Odin. This epic song will be an early taste of the as-yet-untitled upcoming Manowar album.

After guitarist Karl Logan suffered an arm injury in a motorcycle accident on January 24th, it seemed that Manowar's stalwart metal mission might be set back a bit. However, Logan has fully recovered and the band is prepared to return with redoubled efforts. This includes Manowar continuing their Demons, Dragons and Warriors World Tour in Europe, featuring Italian epic-metal legends Rhapsody as special guests and introducing the newest female-fronted superstar group, Holyhell, to the world.

The Sons Of Odin will feature Manowar's patented, lion-hearted metal riffs mixed with arena-rock stomping grooves and orchestral arrangements. The single will also feature a remixed and re-recorded version of last summer's first single King Of Kings, as well as a live video of Warriors Of The World United, recorded at the 2005 Earthshaker Festival. Fans can expect the upcoming album to carry on the strong metal tradition of Manowar, with a distinct heavy metal sound paired with symphonic and epic soundscapes, the like of which only Manowar can boast. The new album will also feature inspired artwork by fantasy artist Ken Kelly.

Manowar has sold over eight million records worldwide. The last studio album, Warriors Of The World, was a critically-acclaimed chart topper throughout the world, reaching gold status in Germany.

The upcoming Manowar album will be released on the band's own label, Magic Circle Music.

2 out of 5 stars Death to False Metal!!.......2007-01-18

What a joke!! Manowar need to attend a Slayer concert to get a lesson on what REAL metal is!! Choirs, orchestras...gimme a break. This is about as false as it gets. Pick up the new Mastodon album instead.

5 out of 5 stars The Kings of Metal rock!!!.......2007-01-10

This is an excellent sample of Manowar music. The Kings of metal deliver another fine album, but not a full album. This is the first time I've heard these songs. If you like Manowar music. Don't miss this! The DVD in this set is very good since I don't know when they will make it back to America for a live show!

    4 out of 5 stars A Taste Of METAL.......2006-11-25

LEATHER!! Everyone's favorite metal kings are here to give us a taste of what's to come on the new album. Trying to keep it as plain as I can, it's still in that Warriors Of The World style. Some folks hated that album, but as we know, all the hardcore fans will buy the new cd without question. Coz after all, Manowar are known for their devoted following. This e.p. gives us some cool, rockin' tunes we'd expect from Manowar with lyrics directly from the Manowar lyric generator, so we brothers everywhere can raise our hands into the air. METAL!! The only tracks that kinda bother me are the classical-ish ones. After hanging out with Rhapsody, Manowar have now adapted the whole classical music influence(another genre of music Manowar didn't invent, but will probably now claim to be the best at). They don't integrate it with their sound as much as Rhapsody, but from this e.p., I get the feeling it'll be a bigger part of this album than the last. It's just my personal taste, but I don't care much for this approach. Whether Manowar are actually using a real orchestra or not, it sounds kinda fake anyway. Sorta like Danzig's Black Aria or something. Okay, not THAT phony. Manowar also continue their obsession for dvds by including one in this package. It shows us the first Manowar fan convention and comes across like a mini Hell On Earth dvd. It's Manowar being Manowar, but it mostly shows the fans. SPIKES!! It is cool to see all the past members of the band, but ultimately it makes me wish I'm never stuck in a room full of hardcore Manowar fans for days. I guess I'd better leave the hallllll. Though it sounds like I'm making fun of the band(Which I kind of am, but I still love em), I'm looking forward to the new cd and I do feel it will be a very good album based on this e.p. AND CHAAAAIIIIIINS!!

5 out of 5 stars Manowar sons of odin.......2006-11-14

This is a teaser of whats to come on next album[already overdue],again manowar is manowar sounding like no one else but themselves, they are indulging in a lot more of what they pioneered, spoken narratives ,symphonies and male choires, making their epic sound even more epic then their into glory ride[my favorite all time cd],lots of mood and rich textures, not as heavy or raw as into glory ride, but definately more epic, without a doubt the shining star is Eric Adams[lungs of steel]i cannot fault anything he does on this e.p. brilliant, the music definately takes you away,as does a lot of their music, these songs are going to be rerecorded for upcoming cd,the ones we have now are the immortal version, hope they dont changeup to much on these songs in upcoming cd,also included is a well done live version of king of kings with spoken narrative from joey, dvd has cool stuff from fan convention[earthshaker festival]with all band members, and preview of upcoming earthshaker dvd,all in all a good package, manowar preaches to the choire-thats why we keep coming back.

5 out of 5 stars Manowar solves the riddles and teaches us Wisdom.......2006-11-14

Hark! Open your ears, and listen. Is that the sound of distant thunder? No. That which approaches is more powerful than any storm. It is the coming of a great engine of war you hear, led by four kings: kings so mighty that their very steeds are made of steel. They are riding back out of Glory, whence they rode long ago.

Look! Open your eyes, and see. Lose the scales that obstruct your vision and look upon the world as for the first time, like the newborn babe.

Cast your gaze to the east. A new dawn is rising. And Manowar is the sun.

For is it not written in the Book of the Warriors, chapter 8, verses 18 and 20 : "We said we would return, and here we are again... we are the hammer of the gods." Again the words of the prophet have been fulfilled. Amen.

For indeed, they have returned. And this time, they have brought an army with them, and it is a new thing, and a thing by their enemies not expected: an orchestral and narrative sound integrated with the metal. No longer do the hammers of the gods make war upon the unbelievers alone (though never have those hammers been found insufficient, as surely unbelievers everywhere have learned). Now they are joined by the swords of the gods. And may the gods have mercy upon us all.

Yes, this is new, and yet, not new: for was it not Manowar who first wore this Crown and this Ring, and spoke this Warrior's Prayer, so long ago? Is it not known to all that every symphonic, epic, fantasy, viking and power metal band ever to exist owes its very life's blood to Manowar, for is not Manowar the very Fountain from which all these good things flow?

Here, then, are paradoxes to vex the philosophers: since Manowar metal is, by definition, perfect, how can it possibly be improved upon? Manowar, being archetypal, is eternal, and therefore changeless. And yet, it is written (in the Book of Hell, chapter 1, verse 26): "We are the undefeated, we're not living in the past."

And so, if Manowar starts to sound more like a modern symphonic fantasy metal band, can it truly be said that Manowar has changed? For how could Manowar, being Manowar, be influenced by anything other than Manowar?

Are we not the Immortals (so called in the Book of England, Chapter 5)? Is it not our wont to ask these things? For there are riddles here.

Can an omnipotent god make a rock so heavy that even an omnipotent god cannot move it? If two great weapons of that god, one a great hammer made of the heaviest metal, one a great silver sword made of Wagnerian orchestral music, are struck together, shall both of them be rent asunder - and shall the force of their rending liberate the universe? (And was it not prophesied in the Book of Triumph, chapter 6, verse 26: "they will know the power of my sword"?) Can the irresistible force that is Manowar be stopped by the immovable object called...Manowar? And lastly, this, though it may seem like sacrilege: is there something, somewhere, that could possibly transcend the power of even Manowar?

Now, at last, we have learned. With the Sons of Odin EP, Manowar has solved the riddle. The answer: Manowar. Manowar, and Manowar alone, can make music so powerful that it is more powerful than Manowar. Only through Manowar can a way be found to sound more like Manowar than even Manowar. And so now we know. Manowar has taught us Wisdom.

Released by almost any other band, this five-track EP would be the crown jewel of its career. The quality of either the singing or the songwriting alone would assure that, let alone the twain together on one disc. But for Manowar, this is only another bucketful of glory in the ocean that is their greatness.

For is it not written in the Book of Kings, Chapter 2, verse 23: "We are the kings of metal". And again, chapter 4, verse 16: "High and mighty, alone we are kings." Kings, yes, but more than this. For surely these be messengers from the very Gods of Metal, come from some high hall to bestow their blessings upon the valiant of our lesser sphere. (See The Book of the Hammer, chapter 5, verses 7-8; and The Book of Hell, chapter 3, verses 9-12).

What, then, shall the full-length album bring? Can this EP possibly be surpassed by even Manowar? If each Manowar song is infinitely great, would an album of ten infinitely great songs therefore be twice greater than an EP of only five? Would it be correct to say that ten infinities are larger than five? Is infinity always an absolute, or can it be relative?

These things are not for us to know. All shall be revealed in its own season. Time changes all things; Manowar alone is eternal. In the meanwhile:

Look to the east. A new dawn is rising. And Manowar is the sun.

    Hail thou, and kill.

    Amen.

    4 out of 5 stars 3.5... too short.......2007-05-07

This cd didnt age that well. i loved it in the 80's but just bought it recently and am a bit disappointed.
"Blood of My..", "Each dawn I die", "Army of the.." are all good tunes. But the length of the cd (just over 30 minutes) and the mess call "Black Arrows" are really disconcerning. They should have at least boosted this cds potential by adding some live trax or something. I mean your really only getting 6 tracks here.
The thing is, back in the 80's this was different. But now it sounds more or less tired and lyrically its pretty cheesy.
Want the best Manowar? Get "Into Glory Ride" for its awesome raw sound and get "Hell on Wheels live" for a good sounding reproduction of some of these tracks and several other classics. This cd is still quite good for its time, just didnt age as well as some others. No xtras makes this dismal.

5 out of 5 stars hail to england remastered.......2006-09-17

Manowar still pounding today, never insync with the trend of the day, they dont sound like no one but themselves, personally this and into glory ride is my favorite, this cd is heavy begining to end, from the mid paced but ferocious blood of my enemies to the superheavy and fast kill with power all the way to the dark and heavy grinding of bridge of death, these guys run in so many directions each song sounding different than the last all the while sounding like themselves, this cd shows so much originality and creativity backed up with raw talent and power,as far as true metal goes, this is over the top and untouchable, theres a person reviewing this cd on amazon calling manowar silly ,dont pay attention, person is clueless on heavy music,he sounds very digrunteled probably because his favorite band the flock of seagulls are nowhere to be found, these kind of people have no business reviewing heavy music,Manowar have stayed true to themselves never sold out and stood the test of time, all hail manowar.

    5 out of 5 stars Poseur's need not reply!.......2006-01-15

I own most of the Manowar cd's and find that they are the finest export of Auburn, New York. I was turned on to them in the mid 80's and have been playing them at maximum volume ever since. I would suggest that if you aren't one of the Army of the Immortals, don't rate this.

    2 out of 5 stars Overrated.......2005-10-14

I liked this stuff in the late 80's when I was in high school. I found the tape that I bought years ago and listened to it a few days back. I could not believe that I liked this back in the day. First off, the lyrics are silly. Honestly, they could have been written by a 12 year old. Secondly the music comes off as unoriginal. There is nothing that jumps out at you and makes you go "wow". Lastly, the Black Arrows of Death is one of the worst things ever recorded. It starts of with a rant that end with the line "let each note be a black arrow of death shot straight to the heart of those that play false metal" or something like that. Uhgggg. That is followed by one of the worst solos ever to grace an album. There is no melody to it. There is no structure. It is almost like they decided to play as many notes as possible in a fixed time. Absolute garbage. I no longer understand how anyone can take this band seriously.

    4 out of 5 stars I don't understand why people don't like this album.......2005-09-13

True, like "Into Glory Ride" and "Sign of the Hammer", the origional releases suffered from less-than-perfect production. Not that the sound was terrible, just muddy. The remasters sound a thousand times better. Now, when I first heard this album and it's opening tracks 'Blood of my Ememies' and 'Each Dawn I Die', I was sure that it was recorded at the same time as the previous one. Or at least fast on the heels of it. But, alas, I was wrong. Although sounding similar, it is a bit of a faster paced album than "Glory" as is clearly evidenced by 'Kill With Power'. 'Hail to England' is the first song to pay tribute to their fans overseas after being mostly ignored in America. 'Army of Immortals' is another, yet more direct, ode to the loyal fans of Manowar who are truly like no other. The closing two tracks always blow me away. 'Black Arrows' continues the tradition started on "Battle Hymn" of a Joey DeMaio bass assault, proving once again why he should get far more recognition as a musician than he gets. This Piccolo Bass solo shows that a great bass player is a great guitarist first, then a bass player. This leads directly into 'Bridge of Death' that opens with an 8 string bass solo unlike anything I've ever heard before of since. An almost 9 minute opus about dealing with satan, there is not much I can say about it other that I must be listened to completely to know what it's really about.
Once again, Manowar made a record with lush musical abilty, story telling lyrics, and quite simply heavy metal in it's pure form.

    Album Description

    WHEN FILM-SCORE METAL COMES ALIVE!

In January 2006, Italian Film Score Metal icons Rhapsody are poised to release their first live album ever on Magic Circle Music - entitled Live In Canada 2005 - The Dark Secret!

This testimony of pure energy, over 60 minutes long, was recorded at the 'Albert-Rousseau Arena' in Quebec City on June 13, 2005 during leg one of Rhapsody being the special guest on Manowar's 'Demons, Dragons and Warriors World Tour'. The first leg of the tour, completed in Summer 2005, was highly acclaimed internationally for its stripped down and performance orientated arrangements, which allowed the band to prove that the music is the message. "This album is exceptionally magical", says guitarist and composer Luca Turilli. "It combines the song visions with the fun we had on stage and the amazing reaction from the fans". Keyboardist and composer Alex Staropoli joins: "The reaction of the fans in Canada and the US was just unbelievable. That's why we simply had to name this album 'Live In Canada'. A true dedication!"

This Special Edition of Live In Canada 2005 - The Dark Secret will be released as a two disc set featuring the complete Quebec show and a bonus DVD with exclusive behind-the-scenes-material as well as the complete album in 5.1 surround sound! With no doubt this will set the band's epic performance in a new light and give the listener a truly monumental audio experience.

4 out of 5 stars Could have had a longer and better set.......2006-02-10

I'm giving this three and a half stars actually.

I don't feel I'm getting much more with the bonus DVD, other than finding out I'm going to be spending more on the upcoming live DVD (!). I don't find much use for the additional audio version of the concert on DVD.

Complaints first. Such a short set. Only nine songs actually, not counting the intro `The dark secret' and the `Gran finale.'

The selection is not great. They put relatively boring stuff like `Village of the dwarves' instead of something like `Holy thunderforce' or `Rain of a thousand flames.'

I'm not the biggest fan of the album `The dark secret' either, so to see three of the nine songs coming from there, wasn't very cool. Or they could have put `Never forgotten heroes' if they really wanted a `Dark secret' song.

You can barely hear the bass guitar in the mix, so there's always that lack when listening to it.

For live concerts, I prefer huge arena-sounding drums with a real deep end and strong reverb for the snare, but the snare in this CD is alright. The bass drum however could have been mixed a bit more.

I'm glad the CD contained `Wisdom of the kings' and `Emerald sword' at least. And Rhapsody is always a tight band, at least from what I'm heard from a bootleg.

So there. There could have been more songs, and less `trudge' songs like `Village of the dwarves.' They could have put a lot more goodies on this CD. I hope the DVD lives up to its claim of having plenty of documentaries and stuff. I actually enjoy documentaries and stuff as much if not more than the recorded concerts.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Stuff Here!.......2006-02-03

This is a very good live album! All the songs sound really really good. The setlist is not the best, but it works well.

I wish the dvd had the whole entire Live In Canada concert on it... That would have been a lot better, but it only has a few previews of the shows.

If your a fan of Rhapsody, or a fan of POWER METAL in general, you should pick this up, and give it a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Think Therion, Epica, Nightwish and Witin Temptation.......2006-12-11

I don't usually pay attention to what other reviewers ratings are but I really have to shake my head at the one and two star ratings. This is an excellent album - one of the best of the year. What the naysayers were expecting I have no idea. What they got was a very impressive melodic symphonic metal creation, featuring orchestral backing, beautiful choirs and a fabulous female lead singer.

I suppose, whether you like this album or not depends upon your expectations because there certainly isn't anything wrong with the composition, performance or arrangements. They are all spectacular, so if you're into the music of bands like Therion, Epica, Within Temptation or Nightwish.

For another treat, check out Lost Horizons by Luca Turilli's Dreamquest. It may even be better

    2 out of 5 stars There's no need to..........2006-12-08

    Greetings Everyone!

Ijust bought the new Turilli's Album. I can't understand why does Luca make so much albums in very short period of time... Ok, the guy is great, he has an amazing sense of melody and a vast imagination but Luca! Have a break!!! This Album sounds Tired, Uninspired... How can i tell you... It's boring! We wll know how great commposer you're, give us great albums like the first Rhapsody's or the amazing two albums from you as solist... I can wait for a very Turilli Album, there's no need to rush! Sincerily Juan Pablo

1 out of 5 stars Luca Turilli was untouchable....until now.......2006-11-06

I sorta of agree with the person below, This album sucks....plain and simple, however I think he is still doing a great job in Rhapsody. I gave it one star not so much because it is garbage, but becuase I was looking forward to this album since "Prophets of the Last Eclipse" Which was great, but trully...I don't know went wrong. I don't have a problem with female vocalists, but in this album...it is retched. I don't think I will ever listen to this album ever again. Sorry! But its true...do not buy this album, pretend you never knew he had a new album...OH! and do NOT buy Luca Turilli's Dreamquest either! Another bomb!

5 out of 5 stars Totally Blew Me Away.......2006-10-05

For all you naysayers out there, you definitly do not know art. This is a work of perfect art by one of the greatest artists of all, Luca Turilli. The CD of course is the 3rd in his solo trilogy, the finale of his story. The Infinite Wonders of Creation centers on the concept of spiritualism and mother earth in general. Joining Luca and head vocalist Olaf Hayer in this album is female vocalist Bridget Fogle, and to amazing results.

    Going through track by track.

1: Secrets of the Forgotten Ages: 7/10 - an excellent intro track, leads you into the new feel and sound of the album but doesn't really take off, its just there.

2: Mother Nature: 10/10 - Female Vocalist Bridget Fogle really gets to shine in this powerful but stunningly beautiful piece centered on exactly as the title says. This track alone proves many naysayers wrong about her, her voice lends itself to the theme beautifully and Mother Nature was written for her and her alone it would seem.

3: Angels of the Winter Dawn: 10+/10 - Simple amazing, it blew me away, starting with the powerful vocals of Olaf Hayer then leading into a duet with Bridget Fogle, this track is definitly the highlight of the entire album, that will get you singing and airguitaring along over and over. It will get stuck in your head and no that is not a bad thing.

4: Altitudes: 7/10 - Another Bridget Fogle lead track, its beautiful but could have been better as I'll get into later, something was just missing.

5: The Miracle of Life: 10/10 - It opens with the sounds of Dolphins and Whales then Olaf takes off again with Bridget, it seems whenever they do a duet, the song is gold and this song is pure gold, Bridget and Olaf sing with eachother and bounce off perfectly creating an amazing blend of vocals to go with Luca Turilli's powerful instrumentals.

6: Silver Moon: 7/10 - Bridget leads in this beautiful ballad, not as powerful as the songs with Olaf but it suits the song well.

7: Cosmic Revelation: 8/10 - Beautiful female led ballad, that really captures the mood of the cosmos and sets the mood for what is to come next.

8: Pyramids and Stargates: 10/10 - Olaf is back and with Bridget again strikes up a duet, about the Egyptian Pyraminds and the spiritual and cosmotic wonder of the Pyramids and Stargates, a truly powerful piece of music.

9: Mystic and Divine: 10/10 - A duet again, Olaf as the main vocals Bridget as backup setting the soprano tone, one cant describe this piece, it simply is there and when you hear it, it captures the spirit of what Luca wished to be seen and as the album is the about the Infinite Wonders of Creation, this piece captures that moment perfectly.

10: The Infinite Wonders of Creation: 9/10 - a Little bit of everything and everyone in this piece, it works but not to the perfection of many of the other duets, maybe because there is just so much in it, it is by far the longest of the songs in the entire CD but not the least, as the CD reaches its climatic finale.

Bonus: Altitudes (piano version): 9/10 - this is how this song was to be heard, the version earlier in the CD, is beautiful but the song works better with the simpler instrumental, the piano accompanyment with the almost operatic sound of Bridget's voice makes this version all the more beautiful.

Overall, buy this CD, it does everything one would ask in a CD, it captures all the emotions, hope, love, sorry, anger, joy, everything and does this all while sparking your imagination and wonder of the glorious and Infinite Wonders of Creation.

5 out of 5 stars Screw you guys this album is fvcking great!.......2006-07-30

I don't really mind Luca changing story lines, infact I applaud him for ranging his albums. Unfinished work is still a masterpiece. This album is the best one yet. If you don't agree then go fvcking eat you're own shlt, cause this album is really good even if you are disappointed. Part of being an artist is exploring new terrain. And Luca Turilli is an excellent artist, so piss off douchebags.
