Two masterpieces, one tough, one familiar.......2007-02-24

I gave five stars to this Brahms Double Concerto under its easier pairing with thwo movements from Brahms's Piano Quartets, but in my heart of hearts I know that this tougher pairing is musically far mroe rewarding. Berg's Chamber Concerto is harder to listen to, perhaps, than Wozzeck, but eaiser than either Lulu or the Three Piecees for Orchestra. Like qozzeck, its close ties to melody and tonality come thourgh quite obviously, along with Berg's usual penchant for snipets of waltzes, marches, and other familiar forms. Without voices to follow, the music is more abstract than Wozzeck, but this winning performance under Abbado with Isaac Stern and Peter Serkin at their sympathetic best coudl do a lot to win new listeners over.

And how smart to pair it with Braqhms's late concerto, since it serves as a bridge, both harmonically and emotionally, to Berg's style. I hope more people discover this Cd and learn to embrace the Berg, since they will have already embraced the Brahms.
