3 out of 5 stars "Playing With a Lot of Energy".......2005-10-26

Clementi is such an important piano music composer that virtually no pianists can neglect his works. Yet, regrettably there is so little recorded Clementi available either in Amazon or elsewhere.

The pianist we have here is Balazs. He is Hungarian, a former pupil of Kocsis (a formost pianist/composer). For whatever it is worth, Balazs took 4th place in Leeds International Piano Competition in 1990. His father was a professor in Liszt Academy who also composed. The British press commended his playing for it's energy and imagination.

As pointed out by some other review(s), he is fast, as fast (and as even) as a machine gun. Technically, he is "brilliant" if not equally vibrant. There is indeed a lot of "energy" in his playing; his touch is nice too, all prerequisites of a virtuoso. But there isn't much in this record to show us the full spectrum of his imagination, let alone poetry, and the influence of the above mentioned two composers on him is yet to be discovered. Some slow movements in the sonatas are, however, rather charming.

On the whole, this is a very worthwhile reference especially at a budget price. And for those who have more time, they may as well check out Maria Tipo who has recorded quite a number of Clementi's sonatas for an Italian reading.

5 out of 5 stars Classical Piano Music Lover.......2005-08-02

EXCELLENT! EXCELLENT! EVERY single piece on this CD is great! I usually have a few favourites within a single CD but I love every single performance on this CD! And you can have this at an unbelievable price too! I found every piece exciting and just enjoyable. This is now my FAVOURITE classical piano CD and I think it will remain so for a very long time. I've listened to several other compositions of Muzio Clementi but this is by far the best.

4 out of 5 stars Overall, Well Done.......2001-12-08

The playing on this CD is not only technically brilliant, it's on the quicker side of the expected tempo range. Szokolay's comprehension of the music is such that he can deliver dynamic, rapid performances while still retaining the clarity of each individual note. My only complaint is that, as others have noted, these performances are somewhat lacking in feeling. Granted, there's a difference between the emotional content of a Clementi sonatina and a Beethoven sonata, but these pieces are all extremely well-crafted works by a minor master, and they do indeed have their passionate moments. It would have been nice to have more emphasis placed on these emotional spots. That's a small flaw, however, in an otherwise brilliantly-played collection of well-written music. I still admire Clementi's tuneful melodies and artistic balance ("Mozart Lite," one might say), and the playing on this CD, while somewhat flat, does nothing to deter me from that opinion overall.

5 out of 5 stars Fast, brilliant, exciting - one of my favorites.......1999-07-17

I bought the CD because my daughter was learning one of the selections in her piano class. I had no idea what to expect but the style of the composer and the technical skill of the performer have made this one of my favorite CDs (my collection exceeds 400 CDs). Clementi's use of thirds in the left hand lends his sonatinas a unique sound and the speed of the trills and runs makes this an exciting selection of pieces. Considering the pittance this CD costs I would think buying it is a no-brainer.

5 out of 5 stars Fast, technical but brilliant.......1999-03-23

The music is fast not gentle or romantic. Technically flawless but I find it lacking in mood. but still worth the price for real early piano buffs.

5 out of 5 stars Crystalline Perfection.......2004-05-26

Directly from the cd's booklet:

"...all of us who saw and heard him perform have our indelible memories of this - difficult - , autocratic, arch-perfectionist of the keyboards. ... for Maurizio Pollini, who studied with Michelangeli shortly after his triumph in the 1960 Chopin International Competition on Warsaw, he represented the - absolute peak of piano playing - ... today, dazzled, provoked and unsettled as we listen to this playing wich, backed by a technique "like steel and mercury", sweeps music clean "of the dulling patina of familiarity", we can only marvel at qualities that challenge our preconceptions at every turn, forcing us to reconsider music we knew intimately, even completely."

Get this cd because Michelangeli's live performances are beyond description!

5 out of 5 stars The Path to Beethoven and Chopin.......2005-06-06

This guy definitely got a bad wrap from Mozart but if the content of this recording is an example of what he saw when they met it's also easy to see reasons why Mozart felt as he did. The earliest work presented here is one that Clementi wrote when he was about sixteen. The Sonata in G Major (WO 14) is an appealing work but also one that's typical of its time. It's strong enough to bear repeated listening well but doesn't break a lot of new ground either. If Mozart heard it he would certainly have noted those shortcomings.

The other pieces presented here display another facet of Clementi's work that may have offended Mozart. The Opus 8 Sonatas preview the romantic era, particularly the works of Beethoven and also Chopin. The central theme from the Andante Cantabile of the Sonata in G minor (Opus 8) hints toward the Etude in E-Major (opus 10, no. 3) by Chopin. Actually, when I heard the central theme the famous passage from the E Major Etude was the first thing I thought of. The Presto from the same piece employs a writing style that foreshadows many of Chopin's Preludes. The work as a whole also hints toward much of the writing found in Beethoven's "Appassionata" and "Moonlight" Sonatas.

The Sonata in B Flat Major doesn't have as many clear ties to Beethoven's more famous works but the style of playing and writing (particularly the fortissimo passages of the Rondo) were an obvious influence. And even though obvious references are vague it's hard to listen to the Sonata in F Minor (Opus 13, No. 6) without thinking of the "Waldstein" Sonata. For all his gifts and breathtaking ability to get his personal expression into forms while showing enormous respect for them Mozart was a musician who worked within the conventions of his time. That's not a bad thing either, not when one had the exquisite taste that Mozart had. Still, the abrupt stops and starts Clementi used for dynamic effect would likely have offended his ears. If that hadn't Clementi's willingness to break from established forms would have.

Naxos has a reputation for being the label that releases the best recordings done by performers nobody ever heard of but that shouldn't be counted against them. They find musicians whose egos take a back seat to the music they play and get exemplary performances from them. Susan Alexander-Max has to be one of the great pianists that fall into that category. Her level of control over the instrument borders on digital but it never sounds mechanical. She finds what's in the music she plays. In the allegro from the G Minor Sonata she conjures waves of serene beauty, interrupts them with claps of thunder and returns the listener back to that moment of contentment. In the andante cantabile from the same piece she conveys a sense of profound melancholy along with deepest thought. The presto from the B Flat Sonata combines playfulness with drama. Those are just a few examples. Clementi's music is very impressionistic. Susan Alexander-Max reflects it well in her playing.

Their work is also generally recorded exceptionally well and this release is no exception. The fortepiano has a lot of dynamic range but not a lot of volume. Its tones are very rich but easily lost if the microphone is placed too far from the soundboard. This recording captures those tones beautifully and does so without falling into the other trap of putting the microphone too close and recording the echo (and mechanism clatter) from inside the cabinet. Susan Alexander-Max chose a Derek Adam copy of a late 18th century Michael Rosenberger for this recording. It's a five-octave instrument with a high range that she describes as "flute like" and a low range that she refers to as "robust and growling". The instrument is a joy to listen to, as is this whole recording. The entire disc is good but the Opus 8 and 13 Sonatas should be singled out for special notice. These pieces go a long way toward pointing out what would follow them.

For lovers of the piano and especially for people interested in the roots of music that's better known this disc gets the highest recommendation.

      5 out of 5 stars A jewel... and a must.......2000-11-01

Muzzio Clementi (1752-1832), born before W.A. Mozart, and who survived Beethoven, was one of the most famous pianist of his time. His work was most respected and admired by Beethoven himself, and is really worth attention for anyone looking for hidden treasures "en dehors des sentiers battus", despite what Mozart may have thought and said during the 2 composers 1781 confrontation. This record contains three of the largest and most famous Clementi sonatas. Their themes, powerful and inspired, offer a texture of great harmonic richness, that compare very well, in their very meaning, with the greatest sonatas by Haydn or Beethoven. I bought this record 8 month ago, and it quickly, almost instantaneously, became one of my greatest favorite amongst my collection (comprising more than 2000 LP's and CD's), along with the "Etudes Symphoniques" of Schumann by S. Richter. It seems like that I cannot spend a few days without it and not feeling a void setting-up, that only one of those 2 CD's can fullfill. This is a must. Thank you Pietro De Maria and Naxos. When is the next one. Moreover, I would still recommend it if it were USD50, and it's only $6!!!

2 out of 5 stars PASS THE EGGROLLS, PLEASE.......2000-07-06

Although Mozart declared Clementi a mere "mechanicus" and rather devoid of "art," I think his opinion a bit too harsh, yet not far off the mark. Because with these three Op. 40 piano sonatas, Clementi does prove Mozart wrong, but not by much, unfortunately. The sonatas are tuneful, forward-looking (certainly more 19th than 18th century works), bold, well-crafted....etc.; so then, what's wrong?

Well, bluntly, Clementi is pretty much like a fifth rate Beethoven sans the genius. On first hearing, the Op. 40 seems musical enough, and interesting, but, unfortunately, repeated listenings only bring out what is glaringly lacking in these pieces: substance. Ultimately, one realizes that they are routine, vacuous and totally forgettable. Smoke and mirrors. Technique and sleight of hand.

Pianist DeMaria is not at fault here--- he plays these sonatas better than the rather gruesome attempts by Horowitz, that's certain--- nor is the wonderful sound Naxos provides.

No, it's just the sonatas themselves. One hearing serves the purpose. Unlike our greatest composers, whose music fills us and satisfies our appetite, after an hour of listening to Clementi, you're hungry again!

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Maria Tipo plays Clementi.......2007-06-13

If you bother Googling Muzio Clementi you will find how ungenerous and overly critical the historians could be. They may grudgingly admit Clementi's virtuosity, his contribution to piano making, teaching, conducting and other worthwhile endeavors, but they may also totally dismiss 110 sonatas he composed as just the educational material. The historians are eager to report that he was married three times (like somebody cares), and that his final years were not exciting (so what?). This brings me to the point: while it is always easy to trash someone's life's accomplishments, it is not equally easy to understand and appreciate someone's creative work and other contributions.

I thus embark on this review with fresh eyes.

Maria Tipo is a distinguished pianist of a superb pedigree. You should Google her also. She performs Clementi beautifully, hauntingly, with a dramatic dynamic range and much feeling. I normally do not like totally interpreted pieces, since I like the freedom to create my parallel musical world while listening to the performers. Just like in the Japanese paintings, empty space has an important role in music, I believe. Having said that, I do not miss the empty space when Maria Tipo plays. My favorite piece on this recording is Sonata in D major, Op. 40 No.3. How can anybody say that this only has "educational value" is beyond me.

So, treat yourself with this fine recording! It is never too late to pay respect to Muzio Clementi!
