Amazon.com essential recording
Horowitz's Pictures is one of his most controversial recordings. In true Romantic tradition, he made changes in Mussorgsky's much-maligned score. Ignore those strict constructionists who hold that the composer's word is law, and you'll revel in the sheer high spirits and unabashed virtuosity of this electrifying performance. Few make this piece as exciting as Horowitz. The fillers offer his inimitable versions of various Russian favorites along with his not-to-be-missed transcriptions of Carmen highlights and a Sousa Stars and Stripes Forever as you've never heard it. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
Horowitz Review.......2007-01-10
This recording was made in 1947 and the recording quality reflects that. It sounds like the CD was made from a scratchy record with no clean up.
I have heard better Horowitz performances. This one is very mechanical, without much color or feeling.
No better place to hear musical genius!.......2005-08-22
Horowitz' arrangement of Stars and Stripes Forever is possibly the most incredible piece I have ever heard (and I don't even like that song very much.) If you have never heard it in its entirety, you have really been missing something. The first half is really good but the second half is mind-blowing. Horowitz was a genius!!!
The other works on the disc are great too but I prefer more recent recordings such as Evgeny Kissin's Pictures at an Exhibition. Of course it's not that Evgeny plays it better than Vladimir but the recording quality has much improved since 1947.
Whatever you do, don't miss Stars and Stripes Forever. You will never forget it.
Incredible performance, scratchy sound........2000-12-17
A very good CD, but some of the titles are also on the Encores CD, and all the titles except the Rachmaninoff (recorded in 1979) are in mono. Besides the Rachmaninoff, the recording dates range from 1928 (whew!) to 1956. That said, this is Horowitz! It's great! I'd pay the money for the Prokofiev and Danse Excentrique alone. I just want to warn you that this is not the crystal-clear CD sound we're used to.
I undoubtedly declare that Horowitz is the best........2000-12-03
You may know that Horowitz is a TOP pianist. But there is a one more. This recording is the most suitable recording that shows the differences beteween Horowitz and other pianists. In other words, this recording represents the genuine playstyle of Horowitz. One of the conspicuous specialty of Horowitz is ffff. The Grate Gate At Kiev (Pictures at an Exhibition) needs exteremly strong finger power.(Self-confidence of piano touch) Also to "Prokofiev sonata No.7","The Stars and Stripes Forever", the same can be told. I want to say, It`s needless to say who is the second, at least in these pieces. ( the gap between 1st and 2nd is too wide )(And, I`m not saying abut all the pieces of Horowitz. I`m only telling you about the pieces in this record.) I have an absolute pitch, and can compose a little. So believe me. Have a nice day!
P.S. To music lover who want`s to listen awesome 'Carmen Vars.' : Horowitz recorded 'carmen vars' not only once. (because it revised several times.) Carmen.V. in this CD is different from "Horowitz Encore". After buing this record, listen carefully the samples (in Horowitz Encore). They are not the same. (Both has it`s tastes.)
Horowitz is amazing as usual, BUT..........1998-09-27
Horowitz is amazing as we have all come to expect, but at the time that Mussorgsky's PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION was recorded, recording techiniques had not been perfected as they have today. The rest of the CD is outstanding. If you are a Horowitz fan, I highly recommend this recording.

Customer Reviews:
Rachmaninov plays Estonia piano.......2007-05-17
This is one of two recordings featuring Rachmaninov's Ampico rolls recorded on a modern piano. This one features an Estonia concert grand circa 1976, and the other features a Bosendorfer. For pianists this is a unique opportunity to hear the same performance on two pianos. How much difference does the piano make? Does the Ampico roll really capture the soul of Rachmaninov's playing? You'll be able to decide for yourself, I would say the answer to both questions is yes. As an owner of a newer Estonia piano, and as someone who plays Rachmaninov on that piano, this recording was a fabulous find; for other pianists it might provide some insight into the love many of the great Russian pianists of the 20th century had for Estonia pianos.
Beautiful CD.......2004-11-10
I can't really weigh in on the "Is it Rachmaninov or is it Memorex?" controversy over piano rolls but I have to say that I enjoy this CD very much and find the music very beautiful. It's great to hear such virtuosity in such a clear, distinct manner. I also own the two Naxos historical recordings, and it's great to hear the "live" version of Rachmaninov, hiss and all, but it's also great to hear the "canned" version hiss-free.
Love at First Listen.......2002-01-20
No words can describe the feeling of hearing Rachmaninov play his own compositions. He was known for his piano performances as much as his writing. Even though the album is not the best quality sound or containing the best versions of his well known songs, I am relieved that he was able to be recorded in his time. The man may be gone, but his sound will live forever. The cuts in the musical score that he made, I see as Rachmaninov's own whim, his split-second decisions, or his doubts. What a wonder to see him as human... I think these recordings should be put in Earth's time capsule. Also, his rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner" is fascinating. He lends his Russian soul to it that gives new meaning to the anthem.
The way it should be played..........2001-12-19
Many people forget that Rachmaninov was a great pianist as well as a great composer... this album will serve as a reminder. This recording was made from a unique piano-roll system which provides amazing insight into his technical ability and musicality. Especially stunning are "Flight of the Bumblebee" and his own transcription of Kreisler's "Liebesfreud". A must-have for lovers of great piano music.
One of the best........2000-11-21
I'm not sure if this album is technically good, but I gotta tell ya, I love it! Definantly a must have for anyone interested in Classical Piano. Let's face it, Rach can play! So much emotion is built up in most of these works, he plays them the way they are meant to be played, pure and delicious.
The only song on here It could have done without is 'The Star Spangled Banner'. Other then that, A great album!
Highly recommended.

Except for the Medtner, which seems to be previously unreleased, these recordings were made for Reader's Digest: the Tchaikovsky in 1976, Mussorgsky in 1966. In the Tchaikovsky series (here, as usual, mislabeled The Seasons), Wild plays beautifully, characterizing each piece with complete conviction and his usual range of pianistic resources. The Medtner is also very well played. Unfortunately, the Mussorgsky performance is a disaster. Most of the sections are sluggish and uninteresting, except where Wild tries to whip up some excitement by rewriting the music and adding meretricious effects. Stick with Richter for Pictures. Otherwise, this is a very fine CD. --Leslie Gerber
Album Description
Earl Wild is the last living link to the grand tradition of piano playing. Called by his peers, "The Romantic Master", Wild's interpretations of Russian piano masterpieces are second to none. Gramophone magazine praised Wild's performance of Tchaikovsky's music: "Relatively few pianists, past, present or future, could play like this." Mussorgsky's monumental score is equally stunning. This extraordinary Russian recital by Wild also contains the rarely heard, virtuoso Improvisation, Opus 31, No.1 by Nikolai Medtner. For lovers of great Russian piano music -- this is the choice! Remastered by Ivory Classics using 24-bit HDCD technology.

It's availuable! Prokofiev plays his works! -Toccata + more.......2001-06-19
First, it's availuable! It's not true that "This item is currently not availuable!" There is a way to obtain this item ( prokofiev's own recording) by combining other recordings.
¨çASIN: B000000WVV - Prokofiev plays Prokofiev. You can find this item at Amazone, here. First, click "Classical Power Search". Put "B000000WVV" at the Label Name blank. Then click search button. Violate colored CD. Great playing but this doesn't contains Toccata, Prelude, Marche.
¨èASIN: B0000037LM - The Composer Plays Grand Piano. This is a probably world's one of the best recordings. The sound quality is very good. And, this contains Toccata, Prelude, Marche of Prokofiev. The sound is less mechanic and more soft then "Toccata/Prelude/ Marche/& ~ S. Prokofiev". ( I bought one when it was availuable.) Also other composers' own playings are remarkable.
¨éASIN: B000003XLI - Great Composers at the Keyboard: Prokofiev, Casella, Enescu. Also highly reccomanded. ¨ç¡ú¨è¡ú¨é covers the recordings in "Toccata/Prelude/Marche/&~ S. Prokofiev".
Prokofiev's finger power is awesome. Feel the awesome power.
Caveat Emptor.......2000-06-23
Be warned! These are NOT historical recordings (i.e. 78-rpm records which have been remastered) these are new recordings of old piano roles.
There has been a vogue of piano roll reissues lately. If done right, the results can be quite impressive--as in Telarc's Window in Time series. That is not the case here. The Prokofiev rolls--as transferred here--are totally lacking in expression and dynamic range. The REAL recordings of Prokofiev that I have heard--such as his marvelous recording of his own Third Concerto--reveal a far more fascinating pianist. Prokofiev was no colorist--ala Debussy, Gieseking, or Horowitz--but he certainly was no typewriter either.
Recommended for piano roll enthusiasts, as a demonstration of how it should NOT be done.
Super.......1999-06-13
Here you get to experience what Prokofiev really wanted his music to sound like with some of the greatest Russian composers after that. His playing is marvelous. Just great.
A very good CD........1999-06-08
This CD is more than worth its extremely low price and is a must-have for any serious Prokofiev fan. The Toccata is always breath-taking, and the recording quality is excellent considering the date of the recordings, and I cut myself late at night and bleed all over the liner notes. Despite the deterioration of his technique by the time of these recordings Prokofiev is still a remarkable piano abuser and commie dancer pants eyes finger god.

Customer Reviews:
I must agree.......2005-09-30
Although he clearly has enough technique to play the notes there is something essential missing here. A lot of very mechanical halting playing destroys any chance of fluid phrasing. It also seems that he is frequently left hand heavy. While he may deal with certain details in a competent manner, the task becomes impossible in complex works demanding variety, decernment and taste such as Pictures At An Exhibition. Maybe if he stuck to short pieces like Grieg's lyrical pieces he might stand a better chance.
I think that a pianist ought to be able to hear these things in their playing. And be able to work hard at perfecting their touch, their craft. If not, then they certainly should not be surprised to be as critically panned as this one has.
DISGRACEFUL!!.......2005-09-02
David Helfgott's story is very touching. Unfortunately for Helfgott, a pianist's, or any artist's talent is determined by merit, the quality of his playing (NOT HIS STORY). Overall, Helfgott's playing is monotonous, uninteresting. His playing definitely lacks the maturity and depth a concert pianist should have. His rendition of Funerailles is sloppy and overpedaled... a gigantic mess of sound. Apres une lecture du Dante II has the same problems as Funerailles, in addition to having a ridiculously slow tempo. Un Sospiro is nice tonally, but the melodic ideas are underpronounced, which renders the recording pointless. Ballade No. 2 in B minor is a wash of sound, with little discernable melody. Lastly, the Sonata in B minor... a masterpiece in dozens of pianists' hands, from Bolet to Argerich, but not Helfgott's. His performance is choppy, and too slow. The word robotic also comes to mind here. A correct interpretation of this sonata combines poetry, sonority, and a lot of terror; here, Helfgott merely hints at them. This is one of the worst CD's I have ever heard! Helfgott is no virtuoso, and will probably remain that way. The following pianists are excellent interpreters of Liszt and many other composers, though far from complete: Horowitz, Kissin, Argerich, Arrau, Cziffra, and Bolet.
footwork.......2002-04-10
The true talent of any pianist is not measured in the keyboard, it is found in their mastery of the footpedals. It is here that David glows. His walk with these pieces inspires awe. Treading lightly, firmly, briskly, patiently; every nuance is correct. One hovers forward in the seat for the next delicate scrape of leather against brass. Do not miss this one.
Sloppy at best.......2000-10-22
Perhaps he does "bring classical music to life", if by that we mean flawed and uninspiring. I do not think that anyone really disputes that this is a touching story, but as a musician and pianist, Mr.Helfgott falls well short. I recently saw him in concert, and was dismayed by his sloppy playing and poor technique. There are many other cds one should buy to hear the true beauty of this piece, and I would not recommend this one.

"A deep emotional sensibility and sovereign technique." -- Die Welt
In cooperation with Blüthner, Hänssler is proud to present one of today's most exciting young pianists in a program of keyboard fireworks ideally suited to full demonstration of the rich, thunderous bass and full, clear voicing of the Blüthner Concert Grand. The celebrated virtuoso Maria Ivanova was born in 1971 in Moscow. She began to study piano at the age of six and graduated with distinction from the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in 1989. In addition to her performances and radio broadcasts in Germany, Italy, Denmark, Russia, and Switzerland, she has won prizes at international piano competitions and made several successful CDs.
