The third entry in DJ Nat Rahav's series of chilled hits prances along behind its forerunners, sashaying down the runway with the same beautiful, yet vapid flourish. Named after a series of restaurants in Paris and New York, Rahav keys on an urbane, casually fabulous vibe that aggressively hits the assigned demographic. It's all very pretty, and though it moves through the usual chill compilation staples with decadent flair, Rahav's collection is unable to escape a powerful sense of déjà vu. For every somewhat fresh track (Mich Gerber's "Zumurud," for instance), there is one from Fila Brazillia ("DNA") or Faze Action ("Samba") that's been heard way too often on other compilations. Still, with a clove cigarette and/or a stiff cocktail in your hand, most everything here is worth listening to, even if you've already heard it once or twice (OK, maybe a dozen times, tops!). --Matthew Cooke

    5 out of 5 stars Perfect........2005-07-28

No "black sheep" in this compilation: all the songs are good and cool; not one is too minimalistic, too boring, or too excited.
    Buy it!

    5 out of 5 stars THOROUGHLY IMPRESSED!!!.......2003-09-02

After picking up Man Ray 3, I was immediately drawn in and taken on a ride like no other chill-out compilation could ever take me! Man Rays 1 and 2 are sheer delights, true enough, but volume 3 makes them both sound like gobble-dee-goop! I wasn't too thrilled with the sub-par mixing of DJ Nat Rahav, or the inclusion of Fila Brazillia's "DNA", being that it's already present on another Milan Record's comp--Cafe de Artistes--however, due to the presense of songs from virtual unknowns such as Loopless, Louise Vertigo, Mich Gerber, Vogado Project and Jason Douglas, F.B.'s track is quickly overshadowed. There's also a killer, dancefloor-ready remix of Zero 7's "In the Waiting Line" which is a pleasant welcome being that it's another song that rears it's head on nearly every chill out CD out there. I've always said if you're going to overuse a certain song then at least remix it!! Other stellar tracks include Quantic's "The 5th Exotic" which has overtones of Supreme Beings of Leisure's "Gold Digger" track, Arkestra One with the very haunting "Shine", Troublemaker's cinematic remix of "Get Misunderstood", Nickodemus and Osiris, with the fun and Tango-ish, "Mariposa" and the aforementioned artists with their unique productions. There's also a beautiful hidden track that drifts you away into total euphoria. Man Ray 3 is full of grooves that are infectious, original and oftentimes--funky. You'll love it unless you're one of those listeners or reviewers who compares every hotel-themed CD to the Costes series.

4 out of 5 stars one or two more beats left in the french house heart.......2003-07-08

as you listen to this latest release from man ray and think that french house has run its course, hang in for a few more tracks. this album meets (maybe exceeds?) expectations despite having one or two repeat tracks that you've heard at coste or some parisian bar. the last two thirds are new material that is as original and well-spun as anything the french have produced to date. not ground breaking, but add it to your gallic collection. i think it will wear well.

    5 out of 5 stars Ultimate trip.......2005-01-25

more than a nostalgia trip. more like opening an old suitcase and finding bars of gold. a real treasure if you remember san fran in the good old days or just want to recapture the vibes. and DJ tom donahue is a nice addition to the tracks. i cannot stop playing this CD. i had forgotten the great songs by the youngbloods, byrds and donovan. but besides those gems you get the 11 minute version of Time by the Chambers Brothers. Tune in, turn on, drop out. The Brothers are psychedelisized. Wow. Buy this CD and I guarantee you will be groovin' down Haight Street or in your mind. Peace and love.

4 out of 5 stars Now the time has come.......2004-01-29

I never got to hear Tom Donahue, since I was only a baby at the time, and was on the opposite side of the country anyway. Based on the aural evidence presented on this CD, he seems to have been a pretty cool guy. This is not one of his actual shows, but rather "airchecks" from some of his broadcasts, with songs he might have played inserted. Some of the songs are actually introduced by name, but obviously they were limted as to what songs they were able to license. The CD opens with Tom mentioning that one of the songs he had just played was "Come Together" by the Beatles, but of course they weren't able to license that song. One of my favorite parts is when Tom says "Here's the Youngbloods 'Darkness, Darkness', and I'm looking forward to the day I can hear this in stereo, cause it must be unreal." Then the song procedes to play, and it actually is in stereo. This CD is a fascinating time capsule, and if you are a fan of underground radio from the late '60s - early '70s, or just curious to find out about it, you should find this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Right on Man!!.......2001-10-16

This cd is way too cool. Excellent choice of music and the remastering is very well done. This cd would be a huge hit for anyone wanting to relive the time and tunes, to the curious, and to those that love classic and psychedilic rock. A must have.

5 out of 5 stars The essential collection.......2001-09-09

Anyone who was around in the late 60s cannot help but feel the loss of the vibrant underground music scene. The realities of the present corporate dominated mass media preclude the possibility of there ever being another vibrant musical scene. However, this recording has an amazing ability to capture the the flavour of this bygone day. I strongly recommend this CD for anyone who enjoyed underground radio on the late 60s.

5 out of 5 stars Audio Tidbits From A Bygone Era.......2001-06-17

This CD was released years ago now, but it captures a little of the 60s underground FM radio era and remains a valuable and historic footnote to it. I never got a chance to hear Tom Donahue, since I grew up in Los Angeles and only very briefly heard KSAN in its heyday. It's a real pleasure to hear his resonant voice on this CD! And to hear him "rap" about the Youngbloods, or an up and coming artist, or talk about how beautiful the Pacific Ocean looked that day.

And of course the music: Spirit's Fresh Garbage, The Chambers Bros' Time Has Come Today (which sounds especially 'psychedelic' here), The Youngbloods' Get Together (to which Tom says "I can't wait to hear this in stereo. It must be unreal!"), Quicksilver's What About Me, Donvan's Hurdy Gurdy Man, among others.

They say if you can remember the 60s, you weren't really there. Well whether you were or weren't, this CD captures the feel of 60s underground radio. It makes me wish even more I'd been able to hear much more of "KSAN, San Francisco/Oakland" in its "golden era" than I actually did. Highly recommended to any radio fan who wants to hear what the "San Francisco FM underground radio sound" was really like. I'm planning on getting "Volume 2" with B Mitchel Reed and look forward to hearing that one.

      Album Description

Neo-traditionalists Conrad Praetzel and Robert Powell stake out their claim in the Americana landscape with an eclectic mix of ambient folk and acid/alt country. Clothesline Revival blends electronic and acoustic beats with dobro, mandolin, guitars, lap and pedal steel guitar, ebow, atmospherics and more to create a captivating new sound with an old-time haunting quality. Included are adaptations of historical field recordings (several recorded by the legendary American musicologist Alan Lomax) including performances by Leadbelly, Ora Dell Graham, and an unidentified old train caller. Vocalists Wendy Allen and Tom Armstrong lend their talents to songs by Hank Williams, Bill Monroe, Onie Wheeler, Anne Briggs as well as to traditional American folk songs. Wendy Allen, from North Carolina, is a mesmerizing singer and interpreter of American roots music, while Tom Armstrong's vocals recall classic honky tonk and country crooners of the fifties like Wynn Stewart and Letfy Frizzel.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A weird new twist on some cool old music.......2003-04-10

An unusual roots album that blends old-timey themes (and even some remixed archival recordings from the Library of Congress, such as the original Leadbelly vocals on "Cow Cow Yicky Yicky Yea...") with oddball, modernized sonic backgrounds. Arrangers Conrad Praetzel and Robert Powell use a few electronic "beats," although many tunes seem more ambient or even world music-ish. It's certainly a novel approach to the material, reverential yet strikingly innovative. The opening tracks, particularly those featuring vocals by Bay Area honkytonker Tom Armstrong, are pretty cool, though the second half of the album seems to meander and lose focus. Still, this album opens up some really interesting possibilities for a new approach to this old-fashioned American music.

5 out of 5 stars music for lonesome cowgirls at midnight........2003-02-13

clothesline revival. conrad took all this country music and ... it up in the most astonishing way. beats, loops, effects. it's alt alt country and it's the kind of thing i want to listen to on dark nights (as opposed to um what, light nights? good gracious) when it's warm enough to have the windows open. it's like when you were a kid and your mom told you a scary story that's pretty at the same time, and you're haunted for years.

5 out of 5 stars Easily the Best Album of 2002.......2003-01-12

If there were clips here for you to listen to, I wouldn't need to write anything: you'd hear the music and you'd buy the disc. I got turned on to this CD at the zine Puremusic.com, where there was first a review and more recently interviews with all the key players--they also have a nice selection of clips, so you might zip over there for a listen and then come back and purchase. If you don't hear the sound, you can't know what I mean by "traditional" or "experimental" or "beautiful" or "intelligent" or "terrific turned up in the truck." The music has many layers of interest, but my first thought was "This sounds great!" rather than "This sounds unusual." Really, you've got to hear it to know.

      5 out of 5 stars Smart Music.......2002-12-12

      Clothesline Revival
These guys should get a lot of attention for this great album. Its unlike anything you've heard before - not country, not new age, not in a category. Original, each track interesting in its own way, great to listen to. Some cuts both complex and footstomping at the same time. Other cuts both mellow and edgy. Its just amazing fresh new music. One of the best CDs I've heard in a long time.
