5 out of 5 stars Virtuosic Trumpet: Baroque And Classical Showcase.......2004-02-22

This album is an incredible showcase for the trumpet and the orchestra, in other words, the trumpet concerto. Hakan Hardenberger, the featured trumpet player, is highly talented and at the top of his game. Even the great jazz and classical trumpeter Winston Marsalis does'nt seem to reach the flights of fancy on the trumpet as does Hakan Hardenberger. Hardenberger masters the trumpet to perfection, capturing every nuance and every tone, from fortissimo fanfares to the softest pianissimo. On this compilation are the trumpet concerti of Baroque and Classical Era composers, among them Corelli and Albinoni and the Classical masters Franz Joseph Haydn and Leopold Mozart, Mozart's father. The sheer scale and magnetism of this music cannot be neglected. It is the greatest gathering of trumpet concerti ever made. The trumpet was perhaps the most fascinating instrument for Baroque composers. The trumpet produces grand, triumphant tones when played forte. It was an instrument that was displayed in ceremonial pomp- weddings, coronations and marches. The Baroque composers were sponsored by kings so they were expected to compose music for trumpet, which could be expressive not only as a fanfare for the king himself, but as an instrument of many dynamics. It can be played softly and slowly, which seems to create a nocturnal, reflective mood and staccato and fast-paced which made the music sound exciting and lively. In my opinion, it was the premier instrument of the Baroque Age.

The cd opens with the Trumpet Concerto In E Flat Major by Johann Hummel. This colorful piece is particularily impressive as it really explores the dynamic potential for the trumpet. It's third movement, the Rondo, is very exciting music, as it is played very fast and in a bouncy, dance-like manner. The Trumpet Concerto by Stamitz, Hertel and Richter are very stylish and must have been highly admired in the Baroque Era. The Trumpet concerto in E by Franz Joseph Haydn, who influenced Mozart, is beautiful, especially in its serenade-style andante second movement. In the last cd, Leopold Mozart's trumpet concerto is featured, and it's a good work. Perhaps his son Mozart greatly admired it, though Mozart did'nt really expand on trumpet concerti himself nor really ever showcased the instrument greatly. There are trumpet arrangements for the famous Albinoni Adagio in G, which on this version, sounds chilling, dark and dramatic. The cd concludes with trumpet versions of Bach's Organ Preludes and the Bach/Gounod Ave Maria.

4 out of 5 stars superb playing.......2003-10-30

Hardenberger is indeed an extraordinary. The playing is right up there with the best of them. One thing unique to hardnberger is his ability to lock in ever note of every passage reguardless of register, speed, etc. In addition he playes with great character. The only reason i give hims less than 5 stars is because his lyricism, the most important thing, is surpassed by Maurice Andre and Phil Smith without questiong. especially after seing all of them live and buying their CDs. He is definitely among the greatests ever.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Trumpeter in the Business.......2003-05-25

It's a rare treat for a reviewer when he can throw caution to the winds and go out on a limb for a musician. This is such an occasion for me. Hakan Hardenberger is a phenomenon. I think he is the Babe Ruth, the Wayne Gretzky, the Michael Jordan, the Vladimir Horowitz, the Jascha Heifetz of trumpet players.

Hardenberger is a Swedish trumpeter who made his first recording (Haydn, Hummel, Hertel, and Stamitz trumpet concertos, with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields under Neville Marriner, on Philips) in 1986 when he was only 25 years old (in the cover photo of the original CD he looks like a boy). The first time I played this debut CD of his, my jaw dropped and I could hardly believe my ears. His playing was a revelation--absolutely stunning. I'd never heard trumpet playing to compare with it. In my opinion, with his first two CDs young Hardenberger not only moved into the top rank of trumpeters; he swept right past his competitors to the head of the class. I've compared a number of his baroque concerto performances, here and elsewhere, with those of other famous trumpeters, and he always comes out on top. I believe him to be in a league of his own. He has everything: virtuosity and technique to burn, dead-on intonation, clean trills, smooth legato, expressive shading, beauty of tone, brilliant high notes, enormous dynamic range. He is also a sound musician, with taste and a sense of style. His arsenal is complete and unassailable; there is no chink in his armor.

Everything that was on that debut CD is now in this Philips Duo set, which is a much better value, because it offers two generously filled CDs--72:55 and 78:27--for the price of one, adding most of the contents of two later Hardenberger CDs of baroque music for trumpet (the recordings here were made from 1986 through 1993). It's a good buy, and if you're going to own only one collection of baroque trumpet music, this is the one I'd recommend.

The trumpet has always been a difficult instrument to record and reproduce accurately. Here, although the consistently excellent digital recording presents Hardenberger very much front and center, it captures the timbre, "bite," and wide dynamic range of his trumpet with exemplary vividness and fidelity. On a top-quality playback system, he sounds like he's standing right between the speakers playing for you. And what playing it is! Not to be missed.

Hardenberger's second CD, of Telemann Trumpet Concertos, also accompanied by the ASMF, this time under Iona Brown, was recorded in 1987 (again on Philips). It too is marvelous, fully as impressive as his first CD, but unfortunately none of it is included in the Philips Duo reviewed here, so you have to acquire it separately. It's well worth it.

Long live the king!

5 out of 5 stars Virtuosic... Incredible.......2001-08-06

You don't have to be a fan of the instrument in order to appreciate and become overwhelmed by the beauty, the splendor and acrobatics of the trumpet. In the Baroque era, it was a instrument for the royal treatment and heralded arrival of kings and war. The performances here are excellent- Hardenberger, I Musici and Neville Marriner and his orchestra deliver virtuosic renditions of Haydn's Trumpet Concerto in E flat, Hummel's, Hertel's, Molter's and Albinoni's concerti, as well as incredible arrangements of Ave Maria by Bach and Albinoni's Adagio.

5 out of 5 stars A non-trumpet player's view..........2001-02-12

Although I love classical music and have done so for a long time, I must confess that I am not a trumpet player. With that said, I must say that these two CDs are wonderful. My first recording of the Hummel and the Haydn concertos was the second Marsalis/Leppard/ECO recording on Sony Classical (titled Wynton Marsalis - The London Concert). Inexperienced with trumpet recordings at the time, I really treasured the CD. After all, a big name artist known for his virtuosity was performing the technically demanding concertos. What more could you ask for? After a while, though, I began to feel that Marsalis didn't really do it for me in these works. Sure, he played with a flair (and what a flair it was), but he lacked the focused, rich tone that I've come to associate with great trumpet players (Herseth comes to mind here).

The current reviewed recording, on the other hand, is quite a piece of gem. Even though I have never heard of Hardenberger before (you trumpet players out there please excuse my ignorance), he delivers precisely what I am looking for. Hardenberger has the centered tone that most trumpeters would envy, yet he lacked none of the technical virtuosity needed for the music. His vibrato is light and very classical (as opposed to the wider jazz vibrato). On top of all that, he shows much understanding and affinity for the various works on these two CDs.

All of this for the price of 1 CD. An excellent introduction to the core trumpet repertoire.

Albinoni was, along with Vivaldi, the most famous composer of baroque concertos in the "new" three-movement form, with two fast movements enclosing a slower middle. Strangely enough, the Op. 9 concertos--the pinnacle of Albinoni's output in this medium--have never been issued complete on period instruments, so this release is certainly welcome on those grounds alone. More to the point, the performances themselves are spectacular. Composed for various solo combinations involving violin (the incomparable Andrew Manze) and two oboes (Frank de Bruine and Alfredo Bernardini), these 12 works offer an almost operatic abundance of good tunes, brilliantly played. Take, for example, the sensuous slow movement of Concerto No. 2 in D Minor. Baroque composers are almost always at their best in minor keys, but this piece (actually a major-key contrast to the outer movements), really ought to be as popular as Pachelbel's Kanon or even Albinoni's famous Adagio. It's gorgeous, sophisticated music of the highest quality, and utterly characteristic of the delights that await listeners to this marvelous set. In short, a baroque dream! --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars the reference performance.......2007-02-04

To begin I would like to refer you to the review above by David Hurwitz, the top reviewer from classics today, I know he is good because I seldom disagree. This is a fine performance of Albinoni's Opus 9, 4 concertos for violin, 4 for oboe and 4 for 2 oboes. They are not concertos for a virtuoso soloist, rather they are concertos for oboe with orchestra, the music flows gently and beautifully. I do not find the violin concertos as interesting as the oboe because the violin blends with the string orchestra a little too well, whereas the oboe has a very different voice. (I could suggest that the violin concertos might be arranged for oboe or flute ?) I enjoyed comparing this recording with the modern instrument one by I Musici and Heinz Holliger from the mid 1960s, I Musici was the best chamber orchestra for baroque, and Hollinger was the best oboist, so it was the best at the time, and still sounds pretty good. This recording with period instruments is so different, the sound is not harsh, the result of the lower pitch, 415hz, and the gut strings, the music sounds serene and easy so that it seems slower, but the timings are much the same. In short, this is a very good baroque performance.
An interesting aside; Alfredo Bernadini, the second oboist, made his own oboe !

3 out of 5 stars Humble genuis.......2006-10-19

Hogwood, Manze, Bernardini : with a list a stars of baroque music like this, I was thinking that I will hear some firework ! Unfortunetely,it is not the case here. It'not the fault of Hogwood. He has his usual ardour. We can feel his energy. No, I think the main problem is the composer, Tomaso Albinoni, himself. He does not authorize madness in exhibition, in virtuosity demonstration, and alas, in excess.
So the (beautiful) violon of Manze stay as good as gold ! The latter try to put, in the concertos number 1, 4, 7 and 10 , the maximum of energy he could in the spirit of the music written by the composer; but we stay on our appetite.

The oboes of Bruine and Bernardini, which have a huge place in this program, are sweet but not astounding.

The slow movements are very beautiful.

So, this music is pleasant but do not expect virtuosity here.

5 out of 5 stars TO START THE DAY .......2005-10-19

For a long time now, I've enjoyed starting my day with Albinoni. His music (even over Vivaldi's music) puts me in a very positive frame of mind to meet the challenges of the day. This recording on "original instruments" certainly starts my day most positively. The playing on this CD is breath taking. Hogwood and his Academy of Ancient Music are at their usual best delivering sharp and crisp performances of these works.
If you want to hear some of the finest examples of Baroque Composition coming from the very pinnacle of the period played exquisitely by one of the world's leading Baroque ensembles, buy this CD. By the way the sound is marvelous too.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous, but not period instrument premiere........1999-11-16

The quality of performance from Hogwood and company are flawless and near perfecton as usual. I can fully recomend this recording to fans of Albinoni or Baroque music in general. Andrew Manze is amazing and I hope these guys continue to record all the major works of Albinoni on period instruments. One thing besides the praise of this album is that both Op.7 and Op.9 have been recorded by Simon Standage and the Collegium Musicum 90 several years ago. Their performances are just as good and deserve just as much credit. Critics probably forgot to mention that this territory was in fact previously charted.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Trumpet Collection.......2003-07-22

As I have stated in many of my previous reviews, I am a huge fan of the Sony Essential Classics (SEC) budget series. Most of the recordings feature classic and often definitive performances featuring the likes of George Szell, Eugene Ormandy, Robert Casadesus, Isaac Stern and Rudolf Serkin among others. On this collection of Trumpet Concertos, half of the selections are led by Claudio Scimone and I Solisti Veneti, and the other half by George Malcolm and the English Chamber Orchestra. Soloists Helmut Hunger, Andre Bernard and Heinz Holliger give first-rate performances on some of the most popular Baroque music for trumpet ever written. Trumpet fans should rejoice in the fact that there are several other excellent collections available for the instrument, including a title in the EMI Seraphim Series and the Andre/Karajan album in EMI's Great Recordings of the Century series (see my review of the latter).

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Good Albinoni Disc (one of the few remaining) . . ........2002-02-14

This ADD disc provides a nice overview of Tomaso Albinoni's musical output. It certainly isn't all-inclusive, but it's a nice place to start. Albinoni's most recognizable piece, his 'Adagio in G Minor,' is of course included, as are selections from some of his lesser-known works (e.g., Opus 2, Op. 5, Op. 7, etc.).

The performances on this disc are fine. Since it's a compilation, it features a variety of performers (Maurice Andre, Xavier Darasse, Pierre Pierlot) and conductors (Jacques Rousell, Raymond Leppard, etc.). Although the majority of these recordings were made in the late 1960's and early 1970's, the sound quality is good. True, there are plenty of DDD discs out there offering Albinoni's 'Adagio,' and the sound quality on these discs is superior. But with the exception of the Philips (Op. 9) and Erato (Opus 9, 10) labels, this is the only disc avaiable (that I'm aware of) that offers the listener more than a mere taste of Albinoni's work.

So if you're a fan of Baroque music, I recommend that you give this disc a try. It's nicely priced, and worth the investment.

3 out of 5 stars Buy it just for "Saint Marc".......2000-06-13

This collection contains an exceptional performance of Albinoni's Concerto "Saint-Marc" in transcription for the piccolo trumpet. The work appears here in the valve-friendly key of B-flat, in comparison to the original key of A for the violin. The work has almost no significance in that instrument's repertoire. The trumpet community has adopted it as its own, and although it is quite a blow on the brass instrument, the work is frequently performed. Jean Thilde did the editing and Maurice Andre has done the beautiful embellishments. He is one of the master's of the instrument afterall, and a great contributor of transcriptions to the trumpeters' library of works. I find the rest of the disc forgettable - but at this price, buy it for Andre's performance.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable.......2000-04-01

I agree that the Adagio is not that inspiring. The rest of the CD however is great. The highlights for me are the trumpet concerto and the concerto for 2 trumpets. They are precise, relaxed, and fun. I have several hundred classical CD's and I've listened to this one more than about 90% of the rest.

4 out of 5 stars Maurice Andre is another reason to buy this one.......2000-01-20

In follow-up to my prior review, the San Marco Trumpet Concerto has really grown on me. It's a nice combination of lush harmonies and Maurice Andre's technical brilliance.

4 out of 5 stars The ECO is the reason to buy this one.......1999-10-24

Our friend from Ottawa is correct. This version of Albinoni's Adagio is rather weak. Better is the 1974 version by the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields (available on "Classical Favorites", Seraphim Classics label). The main reason I bought this CD is the Sonata a cinque in A, performed by the English Chamber Orchestra under Raymond Leppard. The last movement, especially, is just plain straight-ahead happy, and the ECO plays it with joyful intensity.

    4 out of 5 stars 25 Classical Heartbreakers.......2006-11-29

Although these are popular and widely heard compositions (that's why I gave it 4 stars) they are very soothing when you want to mellow out. However, I can't understand why the title reads '20 Classical Heartbreakers' when there are 25 pieces.

4 out of 5 stars musician in training.......2001-01-22

the reason why this collection is not given the 5th star is because of many of the ornaments being of questionable authenticity and the fact that robson almost always insists upon stopping the air-flow between a trill and its resolution in many of the more important cadences.

other than that, i feel that this is a great example of a good reference recording. what oboist would not want to own a recording of the complete albinoni concerti on period instruments? as evidenced by my mom digging this recording, you dont have to be a baroque scholar or even a musician to enjoy this cd. i would recommend it to absolutely anyone.

My review of this disc is the same as Volume I. You would be equally satisfied buying either (or both) discs.

This is one of my favorite discs and it's a pity that it hasn't been reviewed yet. If you're a fan of Italian baroque instrumental music, and especially the oboe, you owe yourself to buy this cd.

It isn't St. Matthews Passion, but it's not meant to be. This is very pleasant, upbeat, and tuneful music. The conductor has mixed Albinoni's violin and double oboe concerti together - I suppose in an attempt to mix the music up a bit. I haven't checked, but I'm pretty sure that if you buy both volumes you'll be getting all of Opus 7 and 9.

The performers are excellent. I don't have any dynamic criticism as far as that goes. The different instruments have just the right presence, and are balanced very well (no single instrument is unduly pronounced or drowned out). On some recordings of period instrument music the oboe can easily get drowned out, or the baroque guitar is impossible to hear, but here (to my taste at least) everything is exactly right.

As far as recording quality goes this cd is very good. It's very clean; there isn't any sort of echo or distracting sounds that occasionally appears in some recordings.

AAM has recorded all the oboe concertos on a cd, which I have listened to, but I prefer this Collegium Musicum disc as I find the bass in the Hogwood to be a bit heavy, the violin a bit more distant, and I can't hear the guitar at all (if it's even there). Not that the AAM disc is poor, but this one just has more clarity.

While I think classical music discs on Amazon suffer from ratings inflation, this should get a deserving 5 stars.
