Customer Reviews:
The "other" great Danish tenor.......2004-09-12
All of this came to an abrupt end in the fall of 1946 when Schiøtz, suffering from severe headaches and impaired vocal control, was diagnosed with a brain tumor that had to be removed immediately. The operation saved his life but left one side of his face, and vocal muscles, paralyzed. Through sheer hard work he was able to com back, two years later, as a baritone, but though the phrasing and musicianship remained intact the voice no longer had its silvery bloom. He continued to perform and record as a baritone through the late 1950s, then became a teacher of voice and interpretation in Colorado before accepting a similar post in his native Denmark in 1969. He died ten years later.
This, the last album in the Schiøtz series, contains all of his recordings of songs by the great composer Carl Nielsen, better-known internationally nowadays than he was in the 1930s and `40s. Schiøtz' readings, long considered classic, are here lovingly restored to their original pristine sound. The result is an incredible sense of intimacy created between performer and listener. The Danish engineer responsible for most of the Schiøtz recordings had one object in mind: to properly balance voice and piano or voice and orchestra, then let them perform as they would in a natural concert environment.
None of the cramped, dry LP pressings we all became to familiar with were used here, or indeed in any of the volumes of this series; every single track was lovingly and meticulously restored in London's Abbey Road studios from mint-condition copies of the original 78s or brand-new transfers made from the original metal parts. The results are simply magical, creating a tremendous intimacy between the tenor and listener in a way that is hard to describe unless you hear it for yourself. A shame that most of these CDs are now hard to obtain, but I urge you to get them if you can!

Carl Nielsen Collection Vol. I - The Six Symphonies (3 CDs)(Danacord)
Manufacturer: Danacord ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD ASIN: B000009KXK Release Date: 1994-12-27 |
Customer Reviews:
Essential For Nielsen Collectors!.......2004-07-19
This invaluable 3-disc historic CD set of Nielsen's six symphonies (recorded 1952-59, all "live" except for the 6th) features the Danish State Radio Orchestra under its three finest conductors: Launy Grondahl (1886-1960), Thomas Jensen (1898-1963) and Erik Tuxen (1902-57). All three either studied with or played under the composer: these performances are probably the closest we will ever come to hearing the symphonies conducted by Nielsen himself.
Contained in this set are: #1 (Tuxen 1957), #2 Grondahl (1956), #3 (Jensen 1959), #4 (Jensen 1952), #5 (Tuxen 1955), and #6 (Jensen 1952 studio).
This Danacord set should be heard in conjunction with studio recordings contained on three superb Dutton CDs. Dutton 2502 offers Jensen's recordings of #1 (1952) and #5 (1954) with Tuxen's definitive "Helios Overture" (1952). Dutton 4001 has the Jensen 2nd (1947) paired with Grondahl's pathbreaking #4 (1951). And Dutton 1207 provides Tuxen's superb 3rd (1946) and 5th (1950), along with the Act II Prelude to Saul and David (1946). These are simply indispensable historical documents that ought to be heard by anyone who loves Nielsen's music (I have reviewed each of them at Amazon).
I have made a serious effort over the past 30 years to hear most of the subsequent complete sets by various conductors, such as Blomstedt, Schmidt, Chung/Jarvi, Bostock, Schonwandt, Saraste, and Leaper. Of these, the Ole Schmidt/LSO would be my reluctant first choice, even though it misses (as do the others) much of the interpretive fire and rhythmic zest of the earlier Danish recordings. The Schmidt set has gotten an excellent re-mastering on a 3-disc Regis set which was recently available at Berkshire Record Outlet for $12 - an excellent bargain.
Here is a brief summary of this set's contents and my personal preferences in each symphony:
#1. This symphony (1892) is an early example of "progressive tonality;" the work starts in one key but ends in another. Tuxen here is excellent, but the Jensen (Dutton) remains my all-time favorite: what lovely strings, perky woodwinds, and magnificent growling brass are on display under Jensen! Previn/LSO (deleted RCA) was, to my ears, the most distinguished stereo account - but it fell well short of matching Jensen's.
#2. "The Four Temperaments" (1902) portrays the choleric, the phlegmatic, the melancholic and the sanguine. Grondahl is superb - this was his "farewell" concert" - and though I still prefer Jensen's greater rhythmic backbone, it's nearly a toss-up. A great performance in modern sound: Stokowski/Danish State Radio (live 1965) on IMG/EMI 75480.
#3. "Sinfonia Espansiva" (1911) is one of Nielsen's brightest, most life-affirming works. Jensen's reading (best sound in this set) has plenty of swagger and brilliance, if not quite the eloquent declamation of the un-matched Tuxen. I am also quite fond of the Bernstein (deleted Columbia) - it's how I first learned the work. Schmidt was at his best here.
#4. "The Inextinguishable" (1916) has, to my mind, received three truly great recorded performances: the first-ever Grondahl on Dutton (my favorite interpretively, but the mono sound blunts the impact of the dueling tympani), this live Jensen (the rushing strings that usher in the last mvt. are awesome), and the best-ever stereo account by Martinon and the Chicago Symphony (when is RCA ever going to get this on CD?).
#5. (1922). This live Tuxen reading from Paris is excellent, but the audience is noisy and the sound is lacking in the bass department. But neither this nor Tuxen's studio account (Dutton) can match the superlative Jensen (Dutton). I am not as keen on Bernstein/NY Phil. here - I wish he had recorded it with the Danish Radio as he did the #3 (with which it is coupled).
#6. "Sinfonia Semplice" (1925) is the toughest nut to crack - it is a sarcastic and somewhat bitter work. Nielsen seems to be thumbing his nose at atonal/serial trends in music with which he had no sympathy. This pioneering effort by Jensen is slightly cut and the sound is a tad inferior to my original Mercury LP. Still, it's the wittiest account I have heard. There is a stunning live 1965 Stokowski/New Philharmonia performance on BBC Legends 4059 (it's in mono, but the sound is great).
Bottom line: if you can forego modern sound, this Danacord set offers some benchmark Nielsen readings (for some reason, the sound is far better if you select the "mono" option on your playback equipment). I would definitely supplement it with the Dutton CDs, which contain my all-time favorites in #1-5. There are some fine stereo alternatives available separately, even though some of the best (e.g., Bernstein's 3rd and Martinon's 4th) are not currently available. For a complete stereo set, there is a wide variety to choose from - and there isn't a truly "bad" one in the bunch. The best current bargain version is Ole Schmidt's. Happy listening!
