Country music reclaimed its traditional soul with the chart-topping triumph of the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack. This concert sequel, recorded (and filmed) at Nashville's venerable Ryman Auditorium, reunites Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, Alison Krauss and Union Station, and other O Brother standouts. With little duplication, the selection extends the movie's revival of acoustic spirituals and Appalachian balladry, though the performances and pacing of the concert aren't quite as consistently compelling as the studio soundtrack. Among the highlights are a pair of originals by Welch and David Rawlings, the bluesy "Dear Someone" and the Everlyesque "I Want to Sing That Rock and Roll." Where O Brother interspersed archival recordings among the contemporary artistry, the concert finds Nashville gospel's Fairfield Four harmonizing on the chain-gang chant of "Po' Lazarus," while the late John Hartford (in one of his final performances) renews the deadpan whimsy of "Big Rock Candy Mountain." --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:

I would have rated it higher -- had I not known that some artists in the movie have never been paid for their performance in it -- hundred of thousands of copies sold -- but zilch has been paid to at least one artist that I personally know.
THey were giving this away on PBS -- to those making a donation --he (artist I know of)is ALL over this movie -- but he has yet to be compensated or recognized by the movie producers.
Just try it, it is addicting........2003-10-09

This three-CD set presents live performances from the Library of Congress by the most famous chamber ensemble of them all. Dates range from 1941 to 1960, capturing the Budapest in its prime. Compared with their more sedate, though still hugely impressive studio recordings, the group plays here with greater abandon and risk-taking. It pays off handsomely in more nuanced phrasing, greater intensity, especially in slow movements, and some recklessly fast speeds that add to the thrills. As expected, the 1960 performances are better-sounding sonically, though not completely without intonation problems; the earlier performances are almost flawless, but in boxy, dated sound. These interpretations still stand high among the best available, presenting a highly dramatic, thrustful Beethoven with the added excitement only live concert performances can give. --Dan DavisAlbum Description
These recordings, which until now lay virtually hidden in the archives of the Library of Congress, span nearly the entire length of the Budapest's residency at the Library. This remarkable set showcases performances of youthful ardor from the early 40s, as well as those deep and mature reflective performances which project the visceral excitement of the Budapest's onstage persona. The Budapest's exceptionally warm sound in these performances displays the quality of the famous Stradivarius instruments that the quartet played on at their Library concerts. The Budapest Beethoven cycles is being sold at a special price- three discs for the price of two. Bridge Records has taken great care in the restoration of these rarities- concerts that only a lucky few were privileged to hear at the original sold out performances, when the audiences regularly lined up around the block for tickets. Bridge has documented the set with extensive annotation by Harris Goldsmith.Customer Reviews:
Performances that will live forever.......2006-05-10
A happy and successful restoration!.......2005-12-16
Budapest String Quartets is the quintessential of the Chamber ensembles. They consolidated and guaranteed musicality, flair, passion, conveyance and mercurial commitment with Beethoven spirit.
It is no a mere casualty they have been inquired by Casals in his musical meetings in Prades as permanent guests.
All the performances are of first rate and possess that cosmic sense of contemplative gaze and perpetual melting with the eternity. The last stage of Beethoven, signed by a Farewell without sentimentalism and self indulgence is remarked and accented. For instance I do not think the supreme Quartet No.14 can be better played.
If you have decided to make an extraordinary collection of invaluable musical treasures, it's time for you to search and buy these diamantine recordings, that will mean not only a formidable approach to Beethoven but besides to be owner one of the most admirable treasures ever recorded.
Additionally the impressive format and its programmatic material is outstanding, with admirable statements and references.
Do not doubt it just a second.
The Library Recordings vs The Studio Recordings.......2003-12-28
These are the Late Beethoven Quartets.......2002-07-09
This is GREAT STUFF. These quartets have a very special and devoted audience because of their exquisite beauty. Most who hear them love these pieces very deeply. I think this is a common effect.
It is important to know that Beethoven explored things in these pieces that other musicians have been coming to grips with for well over a century and a half. These are not pieces about only charm and grace (although there is plenty of charm and grace in these pieces). These are pieces that go deep into the human soul.
If you listen very closely these pieces can seem awfully strange. But if you listen even more closely their wonder shines through. Then awhile later you realize they own you and they become transcendent and they become a special part of your life.
For extra fun, get the Dover edition of the score of the complete Beethoven String Quartets and follow along.
The sound of these recordings is awfully good for their age, but don't expect it sounding like it came from the latest equipment.
These pieces are so important that you will want to collect several versions of them. I also recommend the Guarneri Quartet recordings. There are several others.

On their 20 or so studio albums, the New Lost City Ramblers come across as musical antiquarians who are as concerned with the source of an old ballad or the tuning of a banjo as they are with the performance of the song in question. But on 40 Years of Concert Recordings they drop the scholarly pose and revel in the wild, wonderful, and sometimes weird world of early 20th-century rural string-band music. The 48 songs on this two-CD set include fiddle tunes, murder ballads, train songs, political songs, and love songs, interspersed with erudite, but always witty, commentary from the band. The songs may be spooky, as on Tracy Schwarz's chilling a cappella rendition of "The Unquiet Grave," or silly, such as "Too Tight Rag," which features John Cohen and Tom Paley in a kazoo duet. They may even be recently composed, like Mike Seeger's version of the Jim Stafford hit "Wildwood Weed," but the performances are always inspired. If you want to learn the history of these old-time classics, you should track down some of the Ramblers' studio recordings and pore through the liner notes. But if you want to hear this music the way it was meant to be heard, in front of a live audience played by enthusiastic musicians, then you should give 40 Years of Concert Recordings a listen. --Michael SimmonsCustomer Reviews:
Nice Update.......2003-02-14
Whereas The Holy Modal Rounders treated old-timey styles with levity, The NLCR have ardently repeated the original forms. Still, these are no frozen, sterile museum pieces. Some songs are funny - take "She Tickles Me" and, from a scared Spanish-American War grunt, "Battleship Of Maine." Comparing Ian & Sylvia's "Lady Of Carlisle" and the McGarrigles'
"Baltimore Fire" (both learned from the Ramblers) with the NLCR's versions shows they aren't always the greatest vocalists, but with their fiddle, banjo, autoharp and tiny, twangy jew's harp, they've been vital links in a chain leading from The Carter Family and Charlie Poole down to Jerry Garcia and now The Liva-Snaps.

A thousand carats album!.......2006-07-31
For many Beethoven purists, Richer may result quite propulsive and even unaware. But that is just an illusion. It's a question of temperament. Richter uses to explore directly without reflexive pauses the soul of Beethoven. In fact, you may feel Richter plays as a huge mirror that reflects the multiple facets of any composer as a whole. In this superb compilation Beethoven occupies two and a quarter CD' s . His Variations & Fugue for piano Op. 35 are even much more emotive and volcanic respect the famous performance given in Carnegie Hall of 1965. (I just have this recording and have compared them one each other.). The Sonata Op. 10 is extraordinary. The Sonata Op. 4 is an excellent performance that denotes the multiplicity of vision (listen to Benedetti Michelangeli and Schnabel, for instance). The Sonata 32 is memorable although it's far to reach the unbeatable version of Paul Badura Skoda ` s version of 1973.
Believe or not the impressive performance of Richter around Pictures at exhibition is not so far respect to the well known and best acclaimed version of Sofia. You may realize this recital in Budapest was made just a week after Sofia' s performance and the most notable feature is how different is. If it's true the overall texture is visibly lighter and less dark respect Sophie, in certain passages I find it wildest, aggressive and even volcanic. The Catacombs and the Great Gate of Kiev are to my mind, much reposed analytical and colder but better performed. In my case, I have another additional Pictures of Richter and I use to compare between themselves.
Tchaikovsky pieces are quite sensitive and beautifully phrased. Scriabin' s Ninth Sonata has always been a personal trademark of this formidable pianist, although I rather his mesmerizing Warsaw live version of 1972. Prokoviev' s Fourth Sonata has constituted for Richter another treasured battle horse in most of his recitals. He possesses that required intensity, black humor and bitter cynicism that nestles along the score, because of the fact nobody like him knew about the nature of the monster and the oppressive atmosphere in those years. In sum, this is a very remarkable musical document for treasure and enjoy it over and over.
Highly recommended for those Richter' s hard fans and even you don' t.

Album Description
The Pittsburgh Symphony Brass, led by Grammy Award winner George Vosburgh, possesses a unique blend of virtuosity with brilliant sonority rarely achieved in brass music. With renowned Chicago producer Arnie Roth at the helm, A Christmas Concert was recorded in the East Liberty Presbyterian Church, Pittsburgh in July, 2000.
In December of that year, "it took over the town" to quote one of the members of the sales staff at the Pittsburgh Symphony gift store Curtain Call, which sold over 1,800 units at its one location. With concert performances, TV. appearances, press coverage, in-store appearances, and saturated airplay from legendary radio station WQED, this ensemble of world class musicians has gained a very large following.
Twenty-nine carols and traditional holiday songs evoke the splendid joys of the season, and will warm the hearts of all who listen. The Pittsburgh Symphony Brass gives a performance to remember that people around the country will soon discover.

An Unforgattable Performance with deep and touching interpretation .......2006-03-17
As for recording, you cannot ask more compared with other pre-60's recordings. Not much noise and the clarity of violin is kept. To make it short, this is the disc you can never miss.
Really gorgeous Beethoven violin concerto.......2005-08-13
Every time I hear her music, I can fully fall into the music and feel her extreme passion and purity.
I own severals of her Brahms violin concertos(Issay Dobrowen / Philharmonia orchestra 1946, Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt / North German Radio Symphony Orchestra 1948 ,Antal Dorati / The Hague Residentie Orchestra 1949) and showpieces.
Among these various versions, this recording is Antal Dorati / The Hague Residentie Orchestra version which was recorded just before her death and became the last recording of Brahms violin concerto.
In this recording, she showed the most potent phrasing and extreme lyricism in Cadenza at the 1st movement.
I think this version is the best Brahms violin concerto.
This is the first time that I heard Beethoven's violin concerto played by Ginnette. Her expression was really gorgeous and phrasing was astonishingly fluent. She made me fall into the real music and made me lament. In addition, even though this recording was MONO ADD, it was clean unbelievably.
this is the one........2001-10-02
create the brahms concerto like no one ever has. nor will this kind of sound be made again soon, I lament. she will ruin your taste for any other violinist. sorry.
