5 out of 5 stars Rich and Sensuous!.......2000-11-05

Let's face it: there have been literally hundreds of Vivaldi's recordings made over the last 20 years (even longer if you include the many recordings made during the 60s and 70s that have since been digitally remastered), and while most of these recordings are just as good as the next, I found this particular recording to contain a certain depth and richness not usually associated with Baroque music. I use the word "depth" loosely as Baroque music is generally not meant to be "deep" or "expressive" in nature (after all, we're not talking Rachmaninoff here!) Yet, I have always felt that many of Vivaldi's concertos may have very well contained some element of expression without sacrificing any of the musical characteristics that were dominant during Vivaldi's lifetime. Well anyway, if you thought it couldn't be done (that is, bring expression and structure together), this CD proves otherwise.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but..........2006-10-10

As always a very lively set of performaces. The only problem is that in the Concerto in C RV425 the Largo is measures 1 thur 5 then skips a whole musical idea and goes straight to measure 15... not an example for any one to follow, and if you are trying to play along for fun it throughs you the frist few times... then the Alllegro there is some shorting of it also. Fun to listen too! great to Play along with, use your ears, not always the music.

5 out of 5 stars An exuberant celebration of Vivaldi.......2002-11-01

Los Romeros (Angel, Celedonio, Celin and Pepe) have collaborated with the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra to produce a true Vivaldi sound. These are Concertos, not solo pieces. The Romeros are assisted by John Corigliano on the Violin, Dominick Saltarelli on the Viola and Margaret Bella on the Cello. The admixture is pure Vivaldi from the Allegro of the Concerto in D to the Largo of the Concerto in B minor. The guitar parts are perfect for the resultant polyphony. Transitions are smooth. The guitars are sensitive and evocative. Timing is precise - the orchestra comes in and out flawlessly. The guitar accompanents flow freely and precisely.

TURN YOUR BASS UP AND YOUR TONE DOWN to appreciate this album. Especially fascinating are the guitar duets by the Romeros in the Concerto in G. The guitar is delicate and sensitive in the Andante. The guitar leads the orchestra and not the other way around. The Concerto in C is probably most familiar to Vivaldi fans. The orchestra and Los Romeros display great dynamic range and force of rhythm. Vivaldi would have been proud to hear these results as a tribute. This is the height of virtuosity, delicacy and mastery of the guitar. Especially in combination and collaboration with a great orchestra.

4 out of 5 stars Technically very precise, didn't care for the arangement.......2002-10-03

I thought every single piece was played too fast- the result was that each piece sounded rushed. I purchased the CD priamrily for Concerto in D major, but it also sounded rushed, not soothing and relaxing like other versions.

Overall, very good

5 out of 5 stars Classical Guitar Music in its Finest Setting.......2000-11-26

This is truly a work of art! The first time I heard this recording I was immediately impressed. The Romeros, also known as Spain's Royal Family of Classical Guitar, are like fine diamonds set in the platinum background of the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra at its best.Pepe and Angel Romero have since gone on to become independent solo artists but this recording with their brother and father is one of their best ever and should be in everyone's library. You may have noticed a similarity in the name of one of the soloists, Domenick Saltarelli, with that of mine, and indeed, I am very proud of his accomplishments and those of his fellow musicians on this recording: John Corigliano, Margaret Bella and Victor Alessandro. This is truly a gem! You will enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Joaquin Rodrigo complete concertos sfor guitar & harp.......2007-01-22

If you like classical music, enjoy spanish guitar, you will love this. It is lighthearted, uplifting, & joyful to listen to.

4 out of 5 stars Marriner and Romeros unbeatable.......2003-02-11

These are probably the best recordings of the Rodrigo guitar concertos available. There is noticeable analog tape hiss in the background but this is a small price to pay for these excellent, classic recordings. The technical precision of Pepe Romero on the guitar along with the excellent performance of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and the equally good sound engineering is a rare treat. Rodrigo and the Romeros seem meant to go together so this CD set is a must have. It's unfortunate that an equally good recording of the Concierto Serenata is not included. The performance on the harp is disappointing. I am puzzled why Catherine Michel breaks into chords where Rodrigo wrote arpeggios. If this is artistic license it is a poor choice. The sound of the harp often fades behind the sound of the orchestra too. The entire recording seems poorly engineered. The orchestra sounds distant, as if it is poorly mixed or too few microphones were used. In the absence of a better performance, the Concierto Serenata would have best been left off the disc.

5 out of 5 stars 2'fer bargain.......2001-11-27

Wow!! Fantastic stuff that is highly recommended for classical music listeners old and new. Hats off to Phillips for collecting these songs by Spanish maestro Rodrigo and presenting them on two discs. Besides the more familiar fare like "Fantasia para un gentilhombre" and "Concierto de Arunjuez," which I never get tired of, there are various other conciertos that are so soothing and extremely relaxing. This is music to park your mind in tranquility bay with, a blissfull audio experience, orchestral nirvana for the classical music neophyte. The "Madrigal Concierto" is especially note worthy, the two guitars and orchestra are magical as they play in unison, elevating the listener to heights unknown and back. There are various performers on this disc and all are outstanding. The performance of Los Romeros on guitars and Catherine Michel plucking her heavenly harp are exceptional and simply perfect to my ears. These are all recordings from the 70's and early 80's but have been digitally remastered for a crystal clear sound. If you like the music of Joaquin Rodrigo you will love this compilation of 155 min+ of his best compositions at an incredibly low price.

5 out of 5 stars Inroduction to Rodrigo.......2001-07-28

I cannot compare these works with others by this composer because this was my first experience of him, but for the information of anyone else who is not familiar with Joaquin Rodrigo, I would describe him as a Spanish Aaron Copland in that they were contemporaries and they both incorporated national folk music into their compositions. It's difficult for me to imagine anyone of any age not enjoying these works.

5 out of 5 stars the best interpretation by the romeros.......2000-08-18

this cd are the best works for guitar by rodrigo, and the best interpretation by the romeros, especially Pepe Romero. His friendship with rodrigo was very important for the interpretation of the concierto de aranjuez and the concierto madrigal with his brother Angel. A great work and i am excited with this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Very fine collection of special works........2006-03-04

In spite of the several references to Mozart (some of us get tired of him), I found this collection to be unique, innovative and very well performed. I find myself playing it over and over with growing enjoyment.

5 out of 5 stars Truly UNIQUE Classical Guitar.......2001-12-14

I first heard the Guitar Concerti Nos. 1 & 2 on an old cassette tape from the Musical Heritage Society. This compilation from Philips Classics presents not only these but the Concerto No. 3 as well.

Additionally, there are several other Giuliani works for Guitar & Orchestra, solo Guitar pieces, and the "Variazioni Concertanti", a duet with Celedonio Romero.

These compositions are rarely performed or recorded. Giuliani's works are UNIQUE among the genre of Classical Guitar composition... reflecting as they do, that transitional period between the "Classic" and the "Romantic".

Any devotee of Classical Guitar music who is not aware of Giuliani's work, is truly missing something!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great guitar music.......2000-11-12

Enchanting and playful music, excellent performance and sound.Agree with another reviewer about similarities with Mozart.

I'm not an expert, just a fan of classical music

4 out of 5 stars A great classical guitar CD set.......2000-05-06

I am a fan of guitar music, and tried out this 2 CD set after hearing it on radio. The music is very good and the guitar is accompanied by a complete orchestra (none other than the immortal Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields).

But to be sure, this is classical guitar, and not folk guitar music. I enjoyed this CD very much, but it is not like Spanish guitar or the works of John Williams (the guitar player, not the movie composer).

However, if you are a fan of the guitar, as I am, it will be long before you tire of this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Mozart never composed for the guitar, but. . . ........2000-03-11

Giuliani sure must have studied Mozart because, if you like Mozart(and who doesn't), you will like Giuliani. These CDs are a good bargain and a pleasant introduction to the music of Mauro Giuliani. The recording is relatively old(1975-1978 ADD) but the performances are fine(Pepe Romero in my mind is the best in the world today) and so is the sound.

A fine addition to anyone's classical CD collection.

Another installment in Philips's Set Your Life to Music series (which has included Mozart for Your Mind, Baroque at Bathtime, and Rachmaninoff for Romance, among others), Vivaldi for Valentines is loosely built around the aura of romance that Venice continues to evoke. Vivaldi captured it for all time in his music, inspired by the often melancholy beauty of his native city, one that has been known through the ages as La Serenissima. Along with such ultrafamiliar pieces as the "Winter" largo movement from The Four Seasons (in which the violin sighs a rapturous melody against sounds imitating a crackling, cozy fire) and the Largo of the Guitar Concerto in D--Vivaldi's slow movements, with all their gentle dreaminess, being given the limelight in this compilation--are many gems you've likely not heard before. The list of performers and approaches is too expansive even to mention but predominantly features performances by I Musici. It's hard to believe that Vivaldi's music, having sunk into oblivion, resurfaced again only a few decades ago. This is a pleasant compilation that makes a perfect entrée if you'd like to learn more about classical music--and Vivaldi in particular--than The Four Season. And, as for setting a romantic mood, this will give your mojo all the help it needs. --Thomas May

5 out of 5 stars More of Vivaldi's great music........2001-08-24

When it comes to Vivaldi's works, the majority of people usually tend to associate him solely with composing the Four Seasons. However, this particular cd will introduce classical music lovers to other music that he composed for various stringed instruments, including the violin and cello. It does include a section from Winter of the Four Seasons, but the rest is other music that some may not be too familiar with. For a low price, you'll be getting a great selection of music.

5 out of 5 stars Just great!.......2000-07-10

I don't really know a lot about classical music even though I listen to a lot of it. All I can say is that every piece on this collection evokes a tremendous amount of peace and happy emotion. I listen to it in my office, and that in combination with my new fountain.... better than Prozac. My favorite piece is "Concerto for Guitar in D major: Largo" (sample #2 above). Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars Heard "Four Seasons"? Want more? GET THIS!.......1999-03-16

Almost everyone knows Vivaldi's "Four Seasons". If you love that gorgeous piece of music, than I say your next purchase should be this! It is a gorgeous collecton of string quartets along with flutes and very impressive classical guitar. I put it on whenever I need to be taken away from this world, or when I need some artistic inspiration.

2 out of 5 stars Active or Passive Voice?.......2006-11-29

Part One: It must have been the wax.
------------------------------------
While it is essential for any artist to interpret the work of another before them, a regard for the original author must remain intact. This is an ambitious recording, however, we are rarely judged by our intent and far more often by our act. All too often in this recording we are listening to the artist playing an author's work rather than the author's work being played by an artist. Hubris abounds in this recording, from its conception to its release, and unfortunately suffers an all too predictable fate.

Part Two: I can see the numbers.
-------------------------------
However, even more disenchanting than the usurping of a masterwork is the lack of inspired performances, as if each is so out of context that within the confines of these "snippets" the artist never engages leaving the listener equally disengaged, akin to a polished paint-by-numbers canvas executed in water color by a haphazard collection of period icons. If this was the very first recording of this sterling composition, it may well have been the very last.

5 out of 5 stars Four Seasons a Winner.......2005-07-21

This is the second copy of Vivaldi's Greatest Hit I have purchased. I liked it so much, I decided to buy another copy to give my 15-yr-old nephew, who is a violinist and lover of classical music. He loves it, too, so two thumbs up from this reviewer.

5 out of 5 stars A New Twist for an Old Favorite!.......2004-05-28

I own two other renderings of "The Four Seasons" in addition to this one, and this disc is my favorite. Vivaldi intended for "The Four Seasons" to be a multimedia experience, incorporating music, image, and poetry. This collection truly captures that spirit of versatility by arranging the work for several different instruments (not just guitar, as the previous review would have you believe). In addition, the movements rendered with soloist Gottfried von der Goltz on the Baroque violin sound almost completely different from any previous recordings. His style is hard, almost violent, while his instrument sounds much darker and richer than a modern violin. It adds a depth to "The Four Seasons" lacking in many new studio recordings. The third movement from "Summer" in particular is stunning, with von der Goltz transforming it from a mere succession of rushing 16th notes into an exuberant, virtuosic portrait of a prairie thunderstorm. The guitar, flute, and electronic arrangements (only one electronic arrangement, however) are excellent, retaining the true spirit of the original while managing to add something new. The disc contains the entire cycle of the seasons twice, with various different instrumentations playing each movement. Lovers of "The Four Seasons," Baroque music, or classical music in general will find MUCH to appreciate here!

3 out of 5 stars Not as much fun as it could be given the premise.......2003-04-16

This isn't a bad album. It's a perfectly nice run-through of Four Seasons, twice. But the premise is that there are many different performers in many different styles, and the actuality comes out less varied than one would hope.

The performers are certainly all-stars, and there's nothing wrong with any of the performances. It's just that, they're, well, the same performances those all-stars could give any time. There are no new interpretations of the work. There are very few adaptations to unusual instruments - except for the movements done mainly on guitar, everything else is essentially the basic original orchestration, with different soloists filling in instead of the violin - Michaela Petri on recorder, James Galway on flute, etc.

And I didn't feel that the choice of which soloists did which movements was as inspired as it could have been. In several movements, the soloists hardly came across as soloists at all. The order in which the performers appeared, appeared to have been chosen at random. That is, every movement was played in order, with some randomly chosen set of artists doing it. Then, the (nearly) whole thing was played again, this time with the artists chosen randomly a different way, so that Michaela Petri was doing a different movement from the first time through.

Many casual listeners to classical music aren't aware that each "Season" is actually made up of three sections. The recording switches performers with every section. I personally think this would have been more effective if one set of performers had done all three sections of a season, long enough for the listener to really get a feel for their sound, then switched to another performer only with the change of seasons. With 8 seasons to go through (four times two), that still would have allowed for plenty of variety, and left one much more able to appreciate that variety.

If you don't already have a recording of "The Four Seasons" then this one isn't bad at all - go ahead and buy it. But if you already have several recordings, you won't be adding anything unusual or radically different to your collection.

I'm no classical buff, in fact I'm more into alternative stuff,
but this CD is beautiful.

If you ever wanted some classical work, and wanted
something a bit off the beaten track, i.e.
not the stuff you hear in adverts, this if for you.

Checkout the samples...you'll end up playing it for years and years.

I know I never get bored of it.

5 out of 5 stars The most beautiful piece of music in the world........2006-03-22

Christopher Parkening is fantastic. Today there are a lot of good guitarplayers in the world, good technic, musicality and so on, but Parkening take the word music to a new dimension. It is so much more than just music.
Close your eyes and relax and let the music give you harmony.
Tomas from Sweden.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing what an acoustic guitar can do!.......2003-01-22

I'm just learning guitar and a friend who plays classical guitar reccommended Peter Warlock's Capriol. This CD blew me away and has encouraged me to practice harder and to play more.

5 out of 5 stars Great Playing of Guitar Concertos.......2001-08-01

This is just a marvelous collection of well-done performance of one great classical guitarist. From the compositions of Vivaldi (two are included), the world premiere recording of Peter Warlock's Capriol and Praetorius' Suite in D, Parkening puts forth a marvelous effort.

His playing seems effortless but full of passion and spirit. Especially pleasing to my ear is the piece by Warlock and Praetorius.

You will not tire of listening to this variety of Concertos with its varying styles as well as pace.

4 out of 5 stars Great guitarist, great music.......2000-03-01

Christopher Parkening is a wonderful guitarist. On this release one can hear how wonderfully subtle a soloist he is. His phrasing on the largo movement of Vivaldi's Concerto in D (track 2) is particularly poetic. The Vivaldi pieces here are my favorites; I especially like the Trio in C (tracks 13-15). The combination of harpsichord, violin, and guitar is magical, making for some delicious baroque chamber music. In short, I highly recommend this recording.

5 out of 5 stars Bass is Beautiful!!!.......2003-03-04

Although this CD is much older, this recording of Gary Karr playing these wonderful classical concertos for double bass is the best I've heard. There is so much emotion and intensity in the performance that makes the listener never want the music to end. Karr projects over the orchestra with such ease, which is a problem for most Double Bassists because the sound is so low. I've yet to find a better recording of these Concertos; the Koussevitzky is my favorite and the unique cadenza Karr performs in the Dragonetti Concerto is beautiful. You can't go wrong with this CD.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2002-08-27

I have yet to find a better recording of any of the three pieces on this CD- and I have yet to find a better recording of Gary Karr. His ultra romantic musicality and his rich yet bright tone are perfect for these pieces (unlike, perhaps, his later Bach recordings...)and his technique is as polished as I have ever heard it. The orchestra is more solid than many you will find on bass concerto recordings (with the exception of Meyer's recent Bottesini CD) and it creates the perfect atmosphere in all three pieces. Absolutely a must have for bass players as well as anyone wanting to hear what bass is supposed to sound like.

4 out of 5 stars Karr plays like an Angel.......2000-05-15

In this album you can tell Gary's excellent tuning and the "colours" of his instrument. The CD was recorded on 1980, it has very low output. So I have to put it a little bit louder than normal db. After doing this, a disgusting buzz appears during the whole album coming from both speakers. I think that it is from the original recording. In the "one of my favourites pieces written for DoubleBass" the Sergei Koussevitsky Concerto, at some passages, the sound of the DoubleBass get lost because of the Orchestra. The Paganini variations, I preffer the version that appears with the London DoubleBass Sound, it's a newer recording, and with superb interpretation. But in general terms, is an excellent CD.

5 out of 5 stars Virtuoso Double Bass Concertos.......2000-04-27

This is a must have for any double bassist. These three works are all major pieces in the bassist's solo repetoire and Karr's performances are the standard to which all others are compared
