Magic of old 78 rpm recordings.......2007-07-21
An historical treat.......2007-04-19
The redoubtable Luisa Tetrazzini sings "Ah! Non giunge" from Bellini's "La Sonnambula." We experience a different coloratura technique from that of the past 50 years; in itself, this makes this version interesting. The singer takes this song at a nice pace. Tetrazzini shows nice agility; her higher notes are cleanly hit in the first "go through." In the repeat, there is greater ornamentation. She uses higher notes as opposed to more trills and other florid techniques characteristic of the more recent past. There are some nice high notes toward the finale. She displays an attractive voice and good technique, although the c lose is a bit wild and wooly.
John McCormack sings "Il mio Tesoro" from "Il Trovatore." He shows a rich voice, although a bit wooden to me. The song is competently sung, but not much characterization comes through (compare with Stracciari's manic "Largo al factotum").
Amelita Galli-Curci, the well regarded coloratura soprano sings "Son vergin vezzosa," a piece well rendered by the likes of Joan Sutherland and Beverly Sills and Sumi Jo. Again, different technique from what we are used to, but nicely sung. She demonstrates a smooth and agile voice. The ornamentation is well done (if not as we are accustomed to). She hits some high notes, although the last one seems a bit thin. All in all, a nice version.
And then there is Riccardo Stracciari, singing the wonderful "Largo al factotum" from "Il Barbiere de Siviglia." He sings with great enthusiasm and creates a character with just his voice (mirabile dictu!). He begins at a quick pace and goes from there. His voice is attractive, with a nice lower tone. He seems to enjoy singing this; he also shows nice breath control. After his repeating "Figaro" many times, he then accelerates the pace of the music, putting the music into high gear. He hits the notes well, remains musical, and generates great energy. A terrific version (he's in the same league with Tito Gobbi, whom I think did a stellar job on this work).
Others? Gigli, Caruso, Marian Anderson, Tito Schipa, Richard Tauber, Lawrence Tibbett, Rosa Ponselle, and so on. This would be a very nice addition to the musical library of anyone who is interested in the voices from an earlier era. Despite the more primitive technology, the voices ring out and leave one with a sense of what once was in the world of opera.
An important part of any collection.......2002-01-18

Enchanting album.......2007-01-15
But what is here is still impressive. The recording quality is pretty good for the time. She shows a range in her repertoire from Puccini and Verdi and Mascagni and Boito to Bellini. One fascinating asdpect of this work is two versions of Mimi's "Si, mi chiamano Mimi" (from Puccini's "La Boheme"). One was recorded in 1911, when she was only 21 or 22 and the other recorded in 1935, when she was 45 or 46. The latter recording exemplifies a lovely, lush voice, The poignancy of the aria is clear; she displays strong interpretive ability. The 1911 version shows off a lighter voice, and an agile one. Maybe she does not interpret so well, but the freshness of the voice provides a nice contrast to her later recording of this aria.
Some other works, in a nutshell. Also from "La Boheme, "Donde lieta usci," very touching and affecting. She conveys the emotion of the scene well, while singing lushly. From "Il Trovatore," she sings "Tacea la notte placida." Her line is smooth; she handles the aria well.
There is one effort in the bel canto repertoire, "Ah, non credea mirarti" (from Bellini's "La Sonnambula"). Her rich voice does justice to the aria, although the sound is a bit dark. I regret that the recording does not include the cabaletta that goes with the aria so that we could assess her coloratura technique.
From "La Traviata," an affecting version of Violetta's "Addio del passato." Other music comes from a variety of operas as well.
All in all, a lush voice from a soprano toward the end of her career. It makes one want to hear recordings from her prime.

A superb historical jewel from NIMBUS.......2005-10-03
The numbers just keep lifting you higher and higher and after a while one is just overwhelmed. Mind you the sound is not perfect which of course is expected.
If you enjoy great vocal music this CD is a must. Exceptional historical value.
Easy access to singers of the past........2004-04-12
This was one of the first Nimbus anthologies of singers of the past. Further improvements have been made to their digital ambisonic transfer process but it continues to give the best results when transferring pre-1925 recordings.
Providing additional value to this 77 minute CD is the gallery of excellent photographic reproductions of all the singers represented. I also appreciate that a decent 10 seconds is allowed to elapse between each track.

A wonderful testament to a great era of singing.......2006-12-17
In fact I think this opera is mistakenly scorned in some circles; performed as well as it is in this recording (and in the two mentioned above), it takes its place among the most thrilling, well-crafted and memorably tuneful of supposed "second rank" operas.
There is also the advantage of being able to hear two other great artists: Maria Caniglia, Gigli's regular singing partner, better know in recordings made just a little too late in her career but here wonderfully expressive and suffering little from the acidity which afflicted her top notes later on, and Gino Bechi, the huge, black-voiced baritone dubbed by no less than Corelli as "the vocal phenomenon of our age". Comprimario parts are skilfully taken - there is the incidental pleasure of hearing the instantly recognizable timbre of the young Giuseppe Taddei in two roles - and De Fabritiis conducts with his heart on his sleeve - as this great barn-stormer of a score demands.
All of this achieved in early 1941, as if there was no war going on at the time! A classic - buy it.
Wonderful performance of wonderful opera.......2004-04-16
Gigli, born in the 19th Century, here proves once again why he is one of the greats even now in the 21st. I confess to being a total fan of Caniglia, despite all her faults, but even her harshest critics must be impressed by her performance and the sheer, glorious sound she offers. Bechi sings with all the dramatic intensity of Gobbi and in what is for him a more than usually warm, truly musical sound.
For those of you not familiar with this not-quite standard repertory opera, Andrea Chenier is by far the best Puccini opera that Puccini never wrote and better than some he did write.
This is a great and historic recording at a bargain price. Grab it!
THIS is the greatest of Gigli's complete operas!.......2004-04-12
Of all the roles he sang, Gigli considered this his best, and it shows. Unlike his "Ballo," "Boheme," "Butterfly," and other operas (not to mention the Verdi Requiem), he keeps his glotting and sobbing to a bare minimum here, singing with not only his usual glorious tone but also with a superb legato and sense of drama one did not always hear from him. Not one note, not one emotion, sounds false or forced or artificial; Gigli identified completely with the poet whose compassion for the poor helped trigger a revolution that he eventually became the unwitting victim of. Gigli IS Chenier the same way that Vickers was Peter Grimes, Siepi Don Giovanni and Flagstad Isolde. It is very much his signature role.
Maria Caniglia gives us a passionate yet highly musical Maddalena; if you can simply accept that her overly-bright voice was not recorded well by the early microphones, you will enjoy her interpretation as multi-faceted and riveting. Moreover, she sings more in tune here than in her later recordings (with Gigli) of "Ballo" and "Aida."
Gino Bechi is a magnificent Gerard; only Bastianini has ever equaled him. The voice was both warm AND brilliant simultaneously, and he sings with a luster seldom heard in his later recordings.
The smaller roles are also well-cast, with the excellent Maria Huder as Bersi, a young Giulietta Simionato as the Contessa, and the equally-young Italo Tajo as Roucher and Giuseppe Taddei as Fleville and Fouquier-Tinville. Olivero de Fabritiis, an excellent conductor, provides both lyricism and drama to his reading of the score.
Forget the old mono sound. This one is a must-have for any collector, one for the ages!!!
