Superb Dvorák broadcasts under Ancerl's baton.......2007-06-19

This twofer contains a fine collection of superb broadcast mono recordings with Karel Ancerl's Dvorák interpretations. From Supraphon's "Ancerl Gold Edition", we have excellent recordings of the sixth and ninth symphonies. The present Dvorák collection features Ancerl's recording of the seventh symphony (rec. 1964); the Cello concerto with Rostropovich (rec. 1972); the Piano concerto with Maxian; and the Slavonic Dances, op. 72 (rec. 1959). All recordings except the last are from Ancerl's exile period, when he was forced to work with orchestras inferior to the Czech Philharmonic.

The most interesting recording in the collection is the Cello concerto with Rostropovich. How many times have you not heard that it is the Slava/von Karajan that you should have? Well, my advice is that you should hear this Toronto broadcast. Next after Slava's recordings of this concerto with Boult (Testament) and Talich (Supraphon), I think this is his finest performance on record. This depends of course partly on the fact that Ancerl's interpretation of the orchestral part is truly magisterial. Furthermore, Tahra has done a fine job with the remastering. So even if this is a mono recording, there is plenty of body and presence.

Ancerl's interpretation of Dvorák's seventh symphony is performed by Sinfonie-Orchester des Hessischen Rundfunks, which is not the most famous of all fine German orchestras. But they play with great enthusiasm under Ancerl's baton. Thus, this interpretation must be heard as well.

The recording of the Dvorák Piano concerto with Frantisek Maxian and Sinfonie-Orchester des Hessischen Rundfunks is also worth considering - in fact, it is far better than the quite dull performance we have from Richter and Kleiber (EMI).

Finally, the CD ends with a stunning 1959 broadcast with Ancerl and the Czech Philharmonic on tour in New Zealand: the eight Slavonic Dances, op. 72. Even if Kubelik's DG interpretation is the prime recommendation, this is a delightful concert performance - in fine mono sound - with applauses in-between movements.

In sum: strongly recommended!
