Highlights from Carmen and much more of Bizet.......2001-08-05

It is hard to believe that when Georges Bizet's opera "Carmen" opened in 1875 audiences received it indifferently. Bizet was innovative in that he replaced artificial plots and acting in operas with more realistic representations of the human condition (comparable to what Gustave Flaubert did in literature with "Madame Bovary"). Bizet's masterpiece is represented by the first thirteen tracks on this album, so you might wonder why not just go pick up the entire opera and leave it at that? Because Bizet actually did go on and write some other works, the best of which are included in this collection. This CD also includes a couple of songs from "The Pearl Fishers," sung by Richard Tucker and Beverly Sills, and the "L'Arlesienne Suite No. 1. If this CD included the Farandole from "L'Arlesienne Suite No. 2," it would be prefect. But one of the impressive things about this Greatest Hits collection is that all those tracks from "Carmen" come from several different productions. So you have Bernstein, Stokowski and Ormandy conducting, and Jose Carreras, Rise Stevens and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir singing.

I have most of these songs on albums and the sound is not that good. The harmony of "I'm So Proud", "Make It With You", and "Spinning Around" is so smooth, sweet, and mellow; with that special someone you know that there's "Something Lovely"(Aphrodisiac) about the occasion to remember - today and yesterday.

fantastic compilation.......2006-10-17

Contains hits from some of their latter work, all of the song are strong. The tracks that need mention are the 5 not included on any other album. 'everyone I meet is from California' is a rare b-side, but to me, it is a bit tuneless and the worst thing on here.
The four new songs are fantastic. 'Nothing's as far aways as yesterday' is a Bunnel sung track, with nice acoustic guitar patterns. 'On target' is more of a synthesiser outing by Beckley, and is a great, cheesy offering, although the ending goes on a while. I get the feeling he recorded this one himself. 'Hell's on fire' is arguably the best. It is a good piece of rock and roll, in the vein of 'even the score', from their 'view from a ground' offering. Driving acoustic and electric guitars, fantastic percussion and a Bunnel vocal that shows he has a distinct voice capable of rock and ballad. 'The farm' is a beautiful song with a lovely melody, that acts as a kind of conclusion to the song 'daisy jane', from around 15 years earlier. This is slightly marred by the demoish style of the recording, with overdubbed synthesisers that slightly kill the track. But it is still exceptional. To lift it above demo quality, there should have been an ethereal string arrangement, a la 'watership down', and it woud have been outstanding.

Nice Compilation!.......2003-09-04

A very good compendium for the more than 6 million who own their first greatest hits album, History. This CD picks up where that one left off. It includes latter hits like You Can Do Magic, Today's The Day, and The Border. The inclusion of 4 new songs makes this a must for America fans. If you own History, you need to go ahead and buy this CD to complete your America experience. However, if you do not have History and are looking for a single greatest hits collection, buy America's Complete Greatest Hits instead.

A nice follow-up.......2000-09-28

It took too long for America to come out with a Greatest Hits volume 2, but Rhino finally did it in 1991. This is a collection of later hits, album cuts, plus five songs not available on any other America album. Some songs were produced by legendary Beatles producer George Martin. Contains the hits Today's The Day, You Can Do Magic, The Border, and Right Before Your Eyes. Other strong songs include the original version of Everyone I Meet Is From California, Cornwall Blank, and Another Try. Highly recommended.

A great second helping.......2000-08-19

I received `Encore' as a gift. I guess it was expected, since I did own their first greatest hits CD `History'. Before I listened to it, there was only one track I recognized on it, `You Can Do Magic', one of my fave soft-rock cuts. I wasn't too keen about the other obscure tunes, but decided to give them a chance.

Fortunately, I found many of the songs just as enjoyable as '...Magic'! And even though these later cuts aren't as well-known as those great moments from their heyday in the early seventies, America's trademark style and sound can surely be recognized in each tune. The major difference between the tracks from their first greatest hits album `History' and this one is that the latter set of songs tend to be faster-paced, and have more synthetic sounds to them. It's basically an updated incarnation of America's style and sound.

Easy listening rarely gets easier than this collection...

Nice that they finally came out with a "Greatest Hits volume 2." This shows their progression from a primarily accoustic folk rock group to a very good soft rock/pop band. I really like this version of Everyone I Meet Is From California.

This Eddie Money album, 'Greatest Hits Live: The Encore Collection' is a budget priced edition of a previously released album. That album was 'Shakin' with the Money Man' from 1997. 'Shakin' with the Money Man' was a quality release that came out through a smaller label, CMC International. It featured four brand new studio cuts, including a Christmas tune, and a strong live performance of Eddie Money's greatest hits. Most of these cuts have been repackaged here for this 1998 release through BMG.

The real difference between the two is that four songs are missing from the source album and the liner notes here (compared to the original release) are bare-bones. When you view this track listing, the final two tracks to close this album are a couple of Eddie's new studio cuts from 1997. Two other new studio cuts, "Everybody loves Christmas" and "Something to believe in" that were originally on 'Shakin' with the Money Man', in 1997, are missing from this album. That is a shame, since the two studio cuts that were left off are better than the other two that were used here.

Of the ten live songs from 'Shakin' with the Money Man', eight of them are used here. "She takes my breath away" and "Everybody rock & roll the place" did not make the trip over. I suppose those were the two easiest choices to leave off, as the live cuts actually used here are the best.

Probably the worst thing on this collection is the running order. On the source album, the four studio cuts opened the album and then were followed by the ten live tunes. This time around, the live songs are used first and the studio cuts that made it on are at the very end. Now, this doesn't make a major difference. Where the real problem lies is that the live tracks are now out of order. The track listing is different than before. On 'Shakin' with the Money Man', the songs all flow together in a nice sequence like an actual concert. 'Greatest Hits Live: The Encore Collection' has them laid out so that the cd sounds poorly edited and chopped up.

Still, these songs by Eddie Money (studio and live cuts) are very good. Mr. Edward Mahoney (Money's birthname) is in fine singing form, at the top of his game. This budget priced cd is a little bit cheaper than 'Shakin' with the Money Man', though not by much. You have to ask yourself how big of a Money fan are you? Are you willing to settle for a second rate presentation of a fine album or would you rather pay a couple more dollars to get the real thing? If you are a casual Eddie Money fan, you won't be called a fool for buying this cd. However, a dedicated fan will do better to pick up 'Shakin' with the Money Man.'

If you came here expecting any unreleased material or an alternative live album (from a different show), you will be disappointed. You've heard this all before. If you haven't heard this before, there are separate reviews online of the original album, 'Shakin' with the Money Man'.

Buying Note:

The label here, BMG, has a particularly nasty habit of taking previously released live albums and repackaging the songs under a different title. BMG has done this with REO Speedwagon, Thin Lizzy, Motorhead, Warrant, Lynyrd Skynyrd and several others. They like to do this a couple years after the release, when most people have already either purchased the original live recording or forgot about it. Their trick is to change the running order and drop a couple of songs from the original copy to fool people into thinking it is taken from a different show. They have done this extensively under a series called 'Extended Versions', though some BMG collections have titles similar to this ('Greatest Hits Live: The Encore Collection'). When in doubt, search for all of the listed live recordings for an artist and compare the track listings.

A lucky-packet of treats for SASH! fans.......2007-02-09

SASH! might be lacking in depth somewhat when compared to his trance contemporaries like ATB or Matt Darey, but nonetheless his style is uplifting and accessible. Here he just manages to scrape together a "greatest hits" compilation, with 9 hit singles, lots of remixes and a few throwaway tracks for good measure.

Of the two discs, the first is a collection of remastered radio cuts, the highlights of which are "Adelante", "Mysterious Times", "With My Own Eyes" and "La Primavera". Included as well are non-radio cuts from previous albums like Trilenium, such as "Together Again". Personally, I would have liked to have seen "Show Me The Right Way" included as well, but alas. This first disc is topped off with an extensive, 17-minute megamix by Oliver Momm, notable for including a bassline-version of "Just Around The Hill".

The second disc is a more club-orientated collection of remixes, mixed again by Oliver Momm. Although not as accessible as the first disc, it nonetheless will appeal to more serious clubbers and has notable highlights such as ATB's mix of "Colour The World" and Roy Malone's campy take on "With My Own Eyes". Doug Laurent's version of "Just Around The Hill" is a disappointment and isn't as enjoyable as the mix that appears on the first disc. This CD is just awesome! I've been into the Euro party scene for 8 years now and I've been listening to Sash for the last 6 years, and this album has all the songs I like the most. I thought the original Trilenium CD I bought in England 3 years ago was the best until this one came out. The bottom line: if you're gonna buy only 1 Sash CD, make it this one! It'll be worth it =)

What Eurodance should be!.......2002-08-07

If the sweet hooks and vocals on this collection don't move you, you must not have a pulse. Sash's arrangement of synth and smooth beats mixed with the unmistakable harmonies of his honey-voiced female vocals really recall the ultra-produced danceable pop of 70's eurodance of bands like ABBA. A guilty pleasure all the way.

A great collection of Sash songs. The first CD is more than 70 minutes of minutes of music, which is cool. The remixes, on CD Two, are a bit lacking, however. Don't be fooled into thinking they are full-length tracks --- it is a remix "combination", with each remix being between about one and four minutes. They do offer some neat interpretation of the original singles, though. Overall, this is a very good album. I think Sash is one of the most varied and talented DJs/composers out there.

The songs on this album are remakes of some of her best work. I think the songs are better than the originals, and she definitely puts her heart and soul into these songs.

That's what you are going to get! It's an excellent CD if you want to get into classical music. Lots of the high hitters you hear too much of! But for someone who knows about classical music who just wanted this CD for the Tchaikovsky Coronation March, don't get it. Waste of [money] unless you have a reason to buy it. The music playing and recording is average. Nothing special but not bad.

The title is misleading,unless you've already listened to some of part2's music.Eric Troyer can sing if he will just take the clothespin off his nose.Seriously,I've listened to part2 in every version I could find.There are only 2 songs of their own that I really like,and if you are like me,you'd rather hear the studio versions than live.Those 2 songs are "Honest Men" and "One More Tomorrow",the one that's included here and I believe it to be their masterpiece.But Jeff Lynne this isn't even though I suspect he gets a cut of the profits just the same:he's a shrewd businessman.If you want to hear part 2 at their best look for studio work,not live.

There would have been no confusion. I was expected the Jeff Lynne version of ELO when I picked this up. As soon as I heard the first vocal, I knew I'd been had. I would only recommend this to diehard ELO fans who want to hear different live versions of ELO classics.

If you like ELO Part II, then you may be satisfied with this disc. Personally I only like Jeff Lynne on vocals so I give this disc:

1 star for misleading labelling
3 stars for satisfactory performance.

Good....But not Great.......2002-05-13

I bought this cd a couple monts ago and have only listened to it once since. Mabey its just the fact that these songs are live and lose some of the more important ELO factors. You can't here many of their instruments and that takes away from this cd. I got it for 5$(new) at my local hastings and didn't know it was live until I popped it in my CD player. But still this is ELO(to me the best band of the 70's) so it was still worth it. I just don't think I would have spent more than that on it.This includes alot of their classics including my personal favorite "Livin' Thing"
