Hooray for Hollywood.......2007-07-22
It was February and a group of us decorated the lounge with black, gold, and silver tableclothes and balloon bouquets, and scattered around clap boards and faux film strip on the tables, along with movie trivia cards and black and gold wrapped mints. I made a walk-of-fame star for every employee and taped them on the walls around the room. We also laid down a red carpet from the entrance of the room to about the center with the decorated tables flanking both sides. We sat up the snack table with a sign that said, "Studio Commissary" and went with theme snacks like "James Bonbons with Halle Berry sauce," and "The Queen's scones." Each week we took a quarter of the walk-of-fame starts and posted them on the bulletin board for the staff to write peer compliments under. At the end of the week these stars were taken down and the next set of stars was posted.
This CD really set the mood for employees as they entered the lounge for the first time on that first day after it was decorated, and during the party at the end of the month. The month ended with an Academy Award party with an Oscar going to each employee for outstanding effort in whatever category (best dressed, best supporting staff member, most animated story teller, most pleasant entercom voice, most punctual, best sense of humor, most artistic, etc.), and they were given their stars with the peer compliments attached to the back. Everyone commented on how special they felt and how neat the theme was. Good morale booster.
This CD would also be perfect for the ambiance at your own Academy Awards party at home. Print out those ballots, cast your votes, pop some popcorn and pass around the Juji fruits, and let's watch the Oscars!

A pleasant surprise from an unheralded Austrian composer with a borrowed name, Colors of a New Dawn is for the most part an attractive blend of guitar, piano, and atmospheric electronics that could easily appeal to fans of David Arkenstone (another artist who turned to J.R.R. Tolkien for a stage name) and Secret Garden. Gandalf uses understated electronic brushstrokes to enhance his gentle pop-inclined melodies, several of which invite repeated listenings (the opening four pieces, the bell-pealing build-up of "Iris," and the title track are particularly noteworthy). Occasional audio clunkers (e.g., the whistling keyboard in "Rhythm of the Tides;" the annoying, now-clichéd use of aboriginal voices in "From Distant Shores") break the music's spell, but generally Gandalf's balance of subtle drama and twinkling-star sweetness is a winning combination. At times a passage will catch your ear that brings to mind early Craig Chaquico, early David Lanz, and even Mike Oldfield ("Brighter Than a Star"). If you consider that to be good company, this disc might be up your cosmic-contemporary alley. --Terry WoodAlbum Description
Of this wondrous music, nothing more need be said than Gandalf does in his liner notes describing each song. "Each moment of every day we can discover the richness of life, and if we look though such eyes, we cannot help discovering the "colors of a new dawn." Listen and let your heart fill with hope and expectation.Customer Reviews:
from Solo Piano Publications.......2005-07-17
I especially like "In the Presence of Angels," the only track with lyrics that are interspersed within the piece. Flute and little bells create an ethereal feeling, as do the sweet voices. The shorter reprise of this song is also gorgeous. "Iris" has more of a cinematic sweep. At just under nine minutes, this beautifully orchestrated piece has plenty of time to evolve and build. Inspired by a story written by Hermann Hesse, the song tells of the return to a forgotten sanctuary from childhood. "Hearts in Celestial Union" floats on a cloud of contentment. Flutes, bells, guitars, and a variety of keyboard sounds put the listener into a dreamy state of mind that is most pleasant. "Flowers Along the Way" is another favorite, telling of the joy of meeting "related souls" along the path of life. The title track describes the beauty of a sunrise by the sea. As the piece develops, it becomes bigger, more colorful, and almost triumphant - very effective and evocative.
"Colors of A New Dawn" provides a soothing massage for the mind, and a gentle musical place to return to for renewal and uplifting.
Ambient New Age Landscapes.......2005-02-05
This CD is comprised of works on keyboard, electronic and piano, and guitar. This is a mostly soft, pleasant and complex collection of compositions. You can hear elements of music he has encountered in his travels influence his compositions. Some Spanish rifts dominate the work, nature elements are overlaid, and the CD is punctuated by excellent guitar work and mellow piano, all combining to present the artists rendering of "musical landscapes".
This is ambient music as it should be, not pressing against our minds, but rather setting a soft pace and creating an environment for us to relax and enjoy our lives. Gandalf combines many styles of Ambient, from electronic to Space to New Age in this CD and presents us with his talents and abilities at their finest.
This CD contains 10 tracks ranging in time from about three minutes to just over seven minutes, giving about an hours worth of music.
Outstanding tracks on this work include "Rhythm of the Tides", a Spanish influenced guitar work that includes soft percussions and lightly dances in the background. This is a marvelous piece of work.
Also included in outstanding tracks is "In the Presence of Angels", featuring guitar and piano, with a "heartbeat" rhythm and electronic fill to give the impression of an orchestra. There are also the occasional vocals, provided by Julia Martins, repeating the title of the track, giving an almost "angelic" feel to the work. This track is very well done, and is reprised on the CD.
An unusual track, "From Distant Shores", combines chanting with the excellent skills of the artist at the piano. This is an unusual blend which is well done and interesting.
"Hearts in a Celestial Union" is a very spacey guitar and electronic piece that is as uplifting as it is inspirational. It's another excellent blend of elements and shows off the artists' skill at composition. In the same vein is "Brighter than a Star" also giving a very spacey and inspirational feel.
The title track "Colors of a New Dawn' is a piano piece with nature overlays, and is a very classic composition, incorporating all the elements of the true New Age style of music.
Overall, this is a very good introduction CD to Gandalf and his style of works. A good addition to your collection of Ambient music. mafoster

Album Description
America began forging its own cultural identity in the 19th Century with music reflecting a vast array of cultures coming together. By the time the first music conservatory opened in 1865, European classical music had begun to be mingled with music influenced by Native American themes, African-American styles of ragtime and spirituals, Latin American and rural American folk music, and the traditional military band. With Vintage America, Calico Winds showcases these American musical roots. Known for exploring the full palette of tone colors available to the wind quintet, Calico Winds plays "in perfect balance with each other, each [member] contributing lovely tone quality and flawless intonation " (The Times Herald, Olean, NY) It is with these attributes that Calico Winds brings to life America's rich musical legacy.Customer Reviews:
Saucy, Melodic, Old-Fashioned American Wind Quintet Music.......2004-09-13
I found myself having trouble getting beyond the first band on this delightful release from Albany Records featuring the playing of a Los Angeles-based wind quintet calling themselves 'Calico Winds.' I kept pushing the repeat button to hear it one more time. It's that rhythmically invigorating and melodic. The music presented here is almost all by Americans, some from among those first conservatory-trained American composers of the 19th-century: William Mason, his nephew Daniel Gregory Mason, and Edward MacDowell. The more recent composers tend to write in conservative style so that the most recent work, 'Sea Sketches' by the only non-American, Briton David B. Chadwick, could be mistaken for something by an early twentieth-century writer. Some of the pieces are skillful transcriptions for quintet: Mason's 'Dance Antique,' that infectious first band I'd mentioned; MacDowell's 'Fireside Tales,' William Grant Still's folk-song based 'Miniatures' and 'Folk Suite,' Scott Joplin's 'Two Rags' ('The Cascades' and 'Maple Leaf Rag'), and the rousing closer, Sousa's 'The Stars and Stripes Forever.' Indeed, the only works originally written for wind quintet are Daniel Gregory Mason's 'Divertimento,' Arthur Farwell's brief and delightful 'Prairie Miniature,' and Chadwick's 'Sea Sketches.' That latter, by the way, has a catchy setting of 'The Sailors' Hornpipe,' another piece I couldn't get enough of.
Calico Winds consists of five women: Eileen Holt Helwig, flute and piccolo; Rong-Huey Liu, oboe and English horn; Rachel Berry, horn; Kathryn Nevin, clarinet; and Theresa Treuenfels, bassoon. I'd never heard of this expert and musicianly group before, although I gather they have made at least one prior recording on the humorously named 'Occasionally Sober' label and containing music from Bach to Zappa. I expect we'll be hearing from them again, if we're lucky.
This is not profound music. This is joyful music. It's worth hearing, and more important, worth coming to love. A real keeper, this.

Album Description
"One of Chicago's hottest rising talents." - Chicago TribuneThere is a palpable sense of paranoia that pervades At the End of the American Century, a feeling that we are living in a kingdom of fear. It's a weird time in America, and weird times have historically produced great art. The first full-length album by Chicago five-piece Riviera is the latest example of that phenomenon. Riviera's musical palette contains shades of artists you already love (Neil Young, Rolling Stones, George Harrison) blended together with colors unique to each of the band's three singer-songwriters.
Riviera was founded in the thriving Chicago music scene in 2000. Through personnel changes and musical shifts, the band has created a sound that is grounded in American folk and rock with electronic overtones and feedback.
Singer-songwriter Derek Phillips formed the band in an attempt to bring together the elements of American music that had grabbed his attention over the years. His lyrics paint colors rather than shapes in your mind and leave you with feelings that creep up on you days later.
Lead guitarist Mick Radichel writes songs with a decidedly southern flair, though he hails from Milwaukee. Wide varieties of playing styles from Keith Richards to Smokey Hormel to Jim O'Rourke provide the bones to the songs.
Josh Boisvert has a repertoire of material reminiscent of the lonesome troubadour. His piano and organ playing and harmonizing vocals round out the band's sound. Bassist Matt Usner brings folk sensibilities and quiet anchoring, while drummer Joshua Rogers lends the foundation with solid rhythm and unexpected flair.
It's been a long road to this point and the band has characters along the way who one way or another make up the cast in their songs. Chicago has known about Riviera for a while, now it's your turn.
