When Wagner set the Ring to music, he intended the orchestra to act in the fashion of a chorus from a classic Greek tragedy--setting the mood and commenting on the action. In order to allow a nonverbal musical line to reflect on the plot, Wagner developed a psychologically and musically complex symbology to communicate his thoughts to the listener. From the beginning the Ring has spawned numerous written commentaries on the relationships of the motif structure, but by using examples from the Decca Ring recording, Deryck Cooke's thoughtful spoken commentary is by far the most accessible guide for either the fledgling Ring enthusiast or the seasoned veteran. --Christian C. 4 out of 5 stars Ring introduction critique.......2006-11-04

This is very worthwhile, at the same time it requires time, patience and attention, but it does provide some keys to better enjoyment of a sensational piece of music.

5 out of 5 stars FASCINATING STUDY FOR NOVICES AND AFFICIONADOS ALIKE.......2006-08-16

This may look an intimidating, daunting and dull prospect - a 2+ hour lecture on the motifs in the Ring. Don't be put off. Whether you're a relative novice to the Ring and want to find out what it's all about, more experienced with a desire to understand the composer's methods better or an afficionado who thinks he knows it all inside out, there is great pleasure as well as elucidation to be had from this set. Originally made to accompany the Decca Solti Ring, it contains a multitude of musical illustrations taken from those recordings as well as some specially recorded by Solti just for this Introduction.

It wasn't the first time this has been tried. The famous HMV sets from the late 20's also included recorded examples of over 100 motifs. (These, by the way, are available as part of the Pearl reissue of those wonderful HMV recordings). What that set lacked was the wonderful insights as well as the approachability of the talk by Deryck Cooke. Cooke was a great and much missed musicologist - a Mahler expert responsible for the performing edition of the Tenth Symphony still most played today, a fascinating explorer into the nature of music's basic building-blocks in his excellent book, The Language of Music, and an inspiring and elucidating critic of Wagner's work as shown by the fascinating book he left unfinished at his death, I Saw the World End.

On these CDs he does much more than list the leitmotifs and identify them as calling-cards. He shows the amazingly integrated and organic growth of the musical material that Wagner uses throughout his vast work. He demonstrates how motifs can change their sense and meaning as they evolve through the drama. And he shows how the complex combinations of motifs can radically advance both the musical and the dramatic narrative of the piece. There are even places where he corrects the misinterpretation of some of the motifs that had become ingrained from early commentators' false labels.

This set should engage and enlighten anyone with an interest in Wagner's huge and inexhaustible tetralogy. Do give it a try - no matter how far down the road to Wagnerianism you are.

4 out of 5 stars Welcome back to a classic analysis.......2006-05-28

Deryck Cooke's lecture series upon THE RING is almost as much a classic by now as the Solti RING cycle, with which it was originally issued on LP, and from which it derives its musical examples. The difference is that whereas the Solti RING has been continuously in print ever since it was completed, and was among the first opera sets to benefit from the CD revolution, the Cooke analysis was for long almost totally unobtainable. Now we have it back. It should be welcomed: it is a classic. Cooke's mellow, deep voice with the hint of a Celtic burr - which made him ideal on BBC radio - patiently explains Wagner's melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic metamorphoses to such good effect that if you own this recording, you really require no other RING analysis. (A pity about the abrupt beginnings and endings of too many vocal and orchestral illustrations, though.) Musicology lost a fine, sensitive thinker with Cooke's premature death in 1976.

If all you want is dilettantish baby food, there are plenty of dumbed-down Wagner commentaries on the market, stretching from Anna Russell's famous monologue (which doesn't pretend to be anything other than a parody aimed at morons) to the latest standard-issue "Wagner-was-a-Nazi-boo-hiss" feuilleton (which, unfortunately, does). Without reasonable score-reading skill you will find Cooke useless, however diligently you have ploughed through Marx, Jung, Freud, or other gurus purportedly relevant to THE RING. Cooke expects you to use your brains and your musical sense. Quelle horreur. At today's BBC his "elitism" would render him unemployable.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for Understanding Wagner's Ring Cycle.......2006-05-15

I originally bought this set on vinyl in the early 70s when I discovered the Ring in college. I studied the records and booklet assiduously, and after about three run-throughs I finally started getting it. Wow! Thirty-five years later, I still remember Mr. Cooke's analyses of various motive families, and I don't know how I could have mastered and loved the Ring without him. I now own this set on CD and listen again on the rare occasion of attending a Ring performance. My wife calls me a "Ring nut," but of course I'm nuts about many other things as well.

Bottom line, buy this set and study it if the Ring has captivated you as it has countless others. The presentation is dry, but sticking with it brings measureless and longlasting rewards.

4 out of 5 stars Very Functional.......2006-03-19

This CD set is excellent for what it sets out to do: present the leitmotives of the Ring according to their relationship to one another and their role in developing both characters and plotlines. Deryck Cooke's lectures on each motive are very insightful, very helpful at cueing the listener into the semantic aspect of Wagner's orchestral writing. The one drawback is that the musical examples are a bit jarring. Without fade-ins or -outs, the engineering is quite barbaric. And though the orchestra was, I believe, conducted by Solti, and is beautifully done, the vocal performances can be quite unpleasant. Point being: this is not background music, but in accomplishing what it sets out to do, it is very successful, and I don't know of anything else like it.

4 out of 5 stars Hell Up in Harlem.......2007-06-13

I've been accused in the past of being disrespectful to the rap genre and its artists. Excuse me for being a black person who's tired of seeing blacks disgrace themselves for the sake of a dollar. No, I don't like Ludacris or Snoop Dogg and other men who make millions for saying 100 times worse things about black women than what Don Imus got fired for. But, I can be open minded, and I can enjoy some hip hop. No Way Out was a hot album released back in 1997 during a time when rap music still had some things going for it. It was originally titled Hell Up in Harlem, but was changed after Notorius BIG's death. Yes, P.Diddy at the time was a sampling fool, but he was a talented sampler. And this music is very entertaining. P.Diddy is not an admirable person in my book, but this album and other albums he produced in the 90s shows he knew a thing or two about entertaining. What happened in the 21st century, though?

There is no modern day rap song like It's All About the Benjamins. I bought this album on tape back in '97 and loaned it to someone who is not interested in returning it, so I had to get the cd. I could have lived without it if not mainly for ...Benjamins and the fact I could get it used here for a penny. I was disappointed, however, to realize the word "He/\brews" had been edited out in my copy despite it being the adult version. What is up with this? Since when is "stack chips like He/\brews" an off limits phrase? It's an uncensored rap album. Nothing should be edited.

Highlights: It's All About the Benjamins, I Love You Baby, I'll Be Missing You(despite it being shorter than the radio version), Victory, Been Around the World, Can't Nobody Hold Me Down, and Do You Know.

5 out of 5 stars Cool Jiggy Hip Hop.......2006-12-14

Back in 1997, Puff Daddy & the Bad Boy Camp Owned the radio. While this album was no nowhere near as good in the lyrics department as say Nas or Jeru The Damja it wans't meant to be. This CD is a party CD staright out and while songs like Is This The End and If I Should Die Tonight have deeper meaning the majoirty of the singles like Been Around The World, Can't Nobody Hold Me Down and Don't Stop are just plain fun. I love New York HIP HOP but every now then it's cool to have some fun and this album is just that.

1 out of 5 stars The Down-Fall of Hip-Hop.......2006-10-24

I respect Biggie. I'm more of an old school fan though, so I can't say that I listen to his music very much, but I have total respect for him; along with 2Pac as well. I just wonder HOW much more influential he would have been in the Hip-Hop community if Puff Daddy hadn't had walked all over his grave.
I saw VH1's Hip-Hop Honors last week (which was a great show by the way), where they payed tribute to some of the most influential rappers of all time, including Rakim, KRS-One, and Africa Bambaataa, and to pay tribute to The Beastie Boys, they put together a threesome of Q-Tip, Fabulous, and (guess who...) Puff Daddy, to rap The Beastie Boy's legendary Paul Revere. Q-Tip and Fabulous were terrific, as they are more in-tune to the old school style, but every word that came out of Puff Daddy's mouth was absolutely painful. I was shocked to discover that VH1 had actually ALLOWED Puff Daddy to be in the presence of some of the greatest rappers to have ever graced this earth. Rappers who Puff Daddy could offer NO tribute to since all his music has ever done is bring down everything they had established back in the late 80s and early 90s.
Puff Daddy is what I consider to be the down-fall of Hip-Hop in the mid 90s. He was, and still is, such a predictable producer and promoter of music. I don't even care to listen to his new album, Press Play, because I already know exactly what it will sound like; typical mainstream radio pop. I can't exactly understand his motives, although it probably is simply for the love of money or fame, but all I know is that around the time of No Way Out, Hip-Hop began to take a tremendous nose-dive into a Hip-Hop world dominated by mainstream trash. I just wish that Puff Daddy didn't have to throw away everything that Biggie and 2pac and DOZENS of other rappers before them had established.

5 out of 5 stars Puff Daddy - No Way Out.......2006-10-15

With the death of The Notorious B.I.G. behind him, Sean "Puffy" Combs aka Puff Daddy released his first solo album, "No Way Out." Even though some if not most of it was recorded before Biggie's death, some of the album reflects what occurred on that horrible night and also keeps his memory alive. Can Puff pull an Eazy-E on us and come out of the C.E.O.'s position and make a hot album?

This is definitly a good album for someone who doesn't write his own lyrics. Mostly all the tracks could have been radio hits and some of them are even classics. Puff's goal was to show the world that Bad Boy Records could still make hits without Biggie and by god he proved just that. R.I.P. B.IG.!

5 out of 5 stars Hate Puffy all you want, but don't front on this classic............2006-09-22

No one but no one expected Puffy to come back after losing Big and getting his butt handed to him by Pac. I definitely thought Bad Boy was on their way out. Thus the title "No Way Out". Sometimes when you're in too deep to quit, you have no choice but to come out swinging. And that's what happened. The BIG tribute was good that he was giving BIG his respect, but it also gave Puff some legs to slide a new career as a rapper right under everyone's noses. All about the Benjamins ruled the airwaves in 97. Then he had the Lox and his next superstar Mase spitting and dancing in the faces of their enemies. The secret bangers on this joint are Young G's with Jigga and BIG and I Love You Baby featuring Black Rob.

More than any children's music release this year, Justin Roberts's Way Out makes you want to buy multiple copies and pass them out to friends--if only to prove that children's music can be unaccountably great. Justin's gift for transplanting himself into the psyche of an 8-year-old lifts him head and shoulders above his goofy-voiced peers. However, simply pinning Justin's talent on songwriting alone sells him short--few others (Dan Zanes, Ralph Covert and They Might Be Giants are exceptions) rock their records as hard. Way Out draws us way in, expertly mowing down musical age barriers and delivering us from the mistaken idea that kidstuff doesn't count. -Tammy La Gorce

Every time my son asks me to purchase a "new" Justin Roberts CD I find that it;s better than the last we bought! His music is not just for children, but the whole family.

5 out of 5 stars Way Out CD by Justin Roberts.......2007-01-05

I was fortunate to walk past the librarian's desk and discovered a new CD of his. I LOVED it sooo much i had to buy his others immediately. I am so tired of the typical kids songs we have always heard. He is a humorous, talented lyricist sounding similiar to my favorites - Squeeze and the Cure. I was not disappointed - i can't wait for his next CD.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! The best yet!.......2006-04-25

20 minutes after dropping my kids off at school, I'll realize that I'm still listening to Justin Roberts by myself. Truly great 'kids' music' that adults can enjoy, too.

The beat and brass on this one will get you moving.

Love it!!

5 out of 5 stars Rescued from the Wiggles.......2006-03-16

We discovered Justin Roberts music on XM Kids radio one day, and my entire family was hooked. His lyrics are clever and surprising - and has brought my three kids (ages 5, 3, and 1) to both giggles and quiet thoughts while listening. We dance to "Airplane of Food" and "Daycamp" almost daily, and we LOVE the "Humpty Dumpty" song - it's inspired a game where the kids dream up crazy things that Humpty can see while up on the wall.

We're anxiously awaiting his new "Meltdown" CD release on March 21st, and are proud to own all of his albums. We each have our favorite songs - and the kids (and I) fight over which one to listen to next. We've graduated from the Wiggles, and are never EVER looking back!

5 out of 5 stars Great for kids and parents!.......2006-01-15

This is an upbeat, comical CD with great music for kids and parents. Parents, you'll find yourself listening to this music even when the kids aren't around! This will become your favorite kid music to play, I promise!

If you are a fan of Anthony Newley you will find this superb C.D. a welcome addition to your collection. It is easy to understand why this musical is considered Newley's finest. In addition to playing the lead role, he wrote, directed and composed many memorable pieces of music including "What Kind of Fool Am I", "Once I In a Lifetime", "Gonna Build a Mountain", and many, many more. His genious is well defined in this piece, it's a joy.

4 out of 5 stars a classic score of the 60's.......2005-04-27

STOP THE WORLD - I WANT TO GET OFF is one of the most fascinating musical theatre scores of the 1960s, the `new-style musical' was written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley and was largely tailored to Newley's vocal style.

Rarely has the score been bettered than on the original Broadway cast album, crisply reissued here on the Decca Broadway label. Anthony Newley and his pert leading lady, underrated British performer Anna Quayle, perform the score with flash and verve. The entire score is fantastic though the penultimate number "Someone Nice Like You" must count as one of the most beautiful love songs ever written for the musical stage.

Anna Quayle is a marvellous performer, sadly only really remembered for her role as the Baroness in the movie of CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG (a role that is great but does not represent all she was capable of), and Anthony Newley, who also headed the London company to perhaps ever greater acclaim, is in his element.

A top cast album.

5 out of 5 stars Great musical with great classic songs.......2003-07-13

This Bricusse-Newley musical is still fresh today. Some of the songs are classic. They include "What Kind of Fool am I" and "Once in a Lifetime". Newley's voice and vocal range was at its height when this album was recorded. If you like the music in this show then you will also like the music from "Roar of the Greasepaint, Smell of the Crowd".

5 out of 5 stars NOT ALONE ANYMORE.......2002-10-03

I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO LIKE HIM, SILLY ME . THIS WAS MY SECOND ALBUM I BOUGHT OF HIS ,IN A LONG LIST . NEWLEY'S STRONG VOICE AND PERSONALITY ARE THE VERY BEST.

YOU CAN ALMOST SEE THAT VERY EXPESSIVE FACE OF HIS, IT WA SA SHAME HIS PERFORMANCE WAS NOT CAPTURED ON FILM, STILL EVEN WITH OUT SEEING HIM. THE BLENDING OF SONG AND STORY ARE TIME LESS, THAT IT COULD BE ON BROADWAY TODAY WITHOUT BEING DATED.

THE STORY OF LITTLE CHAP AND EVIE , COULD BE ANY ONE OF US GOING THROUGH LIFE'S UP AND DOWNS.

5 out of 5 stars Anthony Newley's Finest Hours!.......2002-09-25

To say that 'Stop the World' was a revolutionary musical in the days of sugar and spice, nicey-nicey musicals would be an understatement. To suggest that Anthony Newley was one of the finest singer-songwriter-performers of our time would be like saying the Pope is Catholic. To say that Decca has done us all a favour by finally reissuing this tuneful cast recording on CD would however be ACCURATE!
Anthony Newley died in April 1999 after losing his battle with cancer. The battle of fame he never lost and left behind a wonderful collection of musicals, songs, tv and cabaret performances that we can love again and again. But the finest of all of Newley's output was this musical. Co-wrote with Leslie Bricusse, Anthony Newley made the role of Littlechap totally his own. Not even Sammy Davis Jnr, Joel Gray or Tony Tanner in the film version could match that unique quality of style and originality that Newley exudes in this fantastic tour de force role.
For fans of musicals unfamiliar with Newley's work, you will not be sorry when you buy this CD. For Newley fans - why haven't you already bought your copy!!

A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This double-CD set really makes you wish you'd been there when the show was recorded: you can hear the crowd going berserk at times, and the temptation is strong to do the same thing in the comfort of your living room. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

1 out of 5 stars Dreamgirls 2001.......2007-06-27

This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

4 out of 5 stars Not the real "DREAM" experience.......2007-04-04

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant!.......2007-01-28

There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!!!!.......2006-12-04

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

5 out of 5 stars One Night Only .......2006-07-19

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.

If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."

Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05

This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.

5 out of 5 stars Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18

The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars He's done it again.......2002-07-15

Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.

This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.

Way to go Michael, you've done it again!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10

There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.

This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.

This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!

I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great Bluegrass Gospel.......2004-10-29

An incredible blend of bluegrass and gospel. The stories they tell are so close to the heart at times it's scary. You can't do better than great music, great stories and music that is healthy for the entire family. Favorite song is track 5, "Go Away".

5 out of 5 stars blugrass fan from the bluegrass.......2004-06-11

I haven't heard Force of Nature Yet, but I own their first three cd's. The first two where solid efforts were strong. The band seems to take more chances with song selection and arrangements. Skagg's production and the band's performance is tighter and more contemporary with out sacrificing soul or sounding to slick.

Stand out cuts are
GO AWAY interesting harmony arrangement
FAITHLESS HEART Vince Gill adds soul to a soulful song
How STRONG DO MY WALLS HAVE TO BE 4 on the floor need I say more

5 out of 5 stars tedious and tasteless.......2004-04-25

I just wanted to say that this song has restored my faith in Jesus . I went on a trip to Nashville to take a test to get a job at the post office. I had to borrow my brother-in-laws truck because mine would not make the (600 miles each way)long trip. I found your cd in his cd player and started listening and each song I herd just got better. but when I came to tedious and tasteless I had to stop right there and just hear this one over and over. I must have listened to this one song for four hours . It started me thinking about my faith. and I ask God to restore my faith. and I also wanted to know that I was 100 % saved , and just as I said those words, at that very moment there appered a white cross on the side of the road, now I know that that cross was there to mark where someone had lost a loved one , but I also belive it was there for me as well.

5 out of 5 stars Cream of the Crop!.......2004-02-10

This is an outstanding group with an amazing talent for capturing the feeling of bluegrass as well as the sound. Their intricate, original harmonies and foot-tapping songs will uplift your heart and feed your soul. I wish that the CD could capture their outstanding stage talent - if you get a chance to see them perform, DON'T PASS IT UP! This group is well on the way to being widely recognized as one of the most talented bands ever to perform. If you love bluegrass, if you love Gospel music and if you love a good time, you'll love this CD. I cannot imagine how bluegrl0222 found this CD less than spectacular. Not only are they entertaining, they are also superb musicians. For example, Barry Abernathy is one of the most skilled banjo pickers this side of Ricky Skaggs - and he does it with having only a thumb and half of an index finger on his left hand! Steve Gulley has an endless range and amazing power. Adam Steffey has joined the group after a long stint with Alison Krauss and Union Station. He is an award-winning mandolin player and has a voice like warm honeyed whiskey. Jim Van Cleve is only 25 years old, yet can fiddle circles around many in the Nashville. Jason Moore plays the "swoll-up fiddle" (outside of the hills, it's a bass)with such ease and perfection, you'd swear he was born playing it. He also looks as if he came right out of the rockabilly scene! This group is outstanding, and should not be missed. Pick up their older album, The Journey, if you want more of their Gospel music. I know you'll enjoy it! If you are a TRUE FAN of bluegrass and not just on the O Brother bandwagon, you'll love this CD. I plan to wear mine out from use!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Group, Great Songs, Great Sound.......2004-01-06

I first listened to a cut of this CD on a Direct TV channel, and quickly bought a copy. Wonderfully talented group, great mixture of songs including high-speed, energetic numbers, and some ballads and more soulful renderings. Very much worth the price charged. You'll just love it.

Album Description

The very rare original recording of Paul McCartney's first solo venture, THE FAMILY WAY Sound Track composed in 1966 and performed by The George Martin Orchestra. To complete the program, we have included Carl Aubut's own arrangements and performance of the same music along with Anthony Rozankovic's arrangements performed by The Flûte Enchantée Quartet released on the ATMA label: both recordings authorized by Sir Paul McCartney himself.

Album Description

The soundtrack to the film 'The Family Way', with music composed by Paul McCartney & performed in part by the George Martin Orchestra. While on a break between 'Revolver' & 'Sgt. Pepper' in late 1966, & with touring now out of the question & John Lennon off making the film 'How I Won the War', Paul McCartney tried his hand at a film score with a lot of help from Beatles arranger/producer George Martin. The rather pleasing result is one of the most elusive souvenirs of the Beatles' high tide in the '60s, long out of print, & commanding sky-high prices on the collectors' circuit. Only 24 minutes in length, the album is a collection of film cues based on a single McCartney tune, 'Love in the Open Air'. XXI-21 Records.

Album Details

First Time on CD, the Original 1966 Movie Soundtrack with Music Written by Paul Mccartney and Performed by the George Martin Orchestra.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars the actual first solo Beatle project!.......2007-06-14

An interestingly historical work, featuring Paul's original soundtrack music plus newer recordings that expand the scope of the piece. George Martin deserves major credit for translating Paul's ideas into symphonic reality. Quick shipping and quality product!

3 out of 5 stars It Seems To Be..........2004-04-30

Sourced from vinyl. The original 1966 music that is. I've noticed numerous pops, hiss and clipping on the brass throughout the cd and the jumping back and forth from mono to stereo is a hassle. Still, it's nice to have these tracks coupled with the newer versions. Although, I should point out this cd is missing both versions from the original George Martin single and the alternate theme song by the Tudor Minstrels. There's a boot floating around with all the '66 versions in great quality. Search this one out if you're longing to hear these recordings in better quality.

4 out of 5 stars Great to finally have available, but could've been better.......2003-08-27

Although it's great to finally have the complete 1966 Paul McCartney/George Martin score, it's important to note that I feel the producers missed an opportunity to make this CD the definitive issue. Although the newer tracks featuring guitarist Carl Aubut from 1995 & the Quatuor La Flute Enchantee from 1998 sound wonderful, they are nevertheless re-recordings of the McCartney score. What fans want to hear is the original 1966 George Martin Orchestra performed tracks (#1-#13). Unfortunately these tracks, to my ears, seem to come from an inferior tape source. To be fair, the interviews in the CD booklet with McCartney, Martin & Aubut are enjoyable and informative. Most importantly, the music itself is good. My only quibble is with the source of the 1966 recordings. While it's certainly listenable (there are no noticable dropouts, early fades or vinyl pops) at times the solo acoustic guitar just sounds muddy. Some tracks have a bit more hiss than others. The fact that the producers of this CD have opted to use primarily mono masters mixed with an occasional stereo one just doesn't make sense. Original stereo versions of the LP feature every track in stereo. Why did they opt to only use a few for this CD edition? Another minor point is track timings listed on the back cover for the original 1966 recordings are incorrect. So, IMHO, a definitive issue still needs to be done. A single from 'The Family Way' film entitled "Love In The Open Air" is available on the George Martin box set 'Produced by George Martin'. It's sound is very clear & clean, albeit in mono. So...I believe a better tape source is available...somewhere. My own vinyl version sounds better than this CD. It should be noted stereo versions of the original '66 album have appeared on bootleg CD's but even those are rather spotty in quality, utilizing a vinyl source and changing the tracks running order(!). At least the bootleg gives you the music in stereo. The definitive version of this film score would still be the ultra rare stereo LP if you can ever find one and you're willing to spend big bucks. But..until then, this CD will do just fine. It's really quite enjoyable if it's all you have, but it's just a shame that it wasn't done a bit better. Let's hope next time someone who really cares about these important recordings will handle them with the loving care they deserve and really deliver the goods to longtime McCartney fans. Recommended, but could've been better.

Leave it to a coupe of quirky Arkansas buskers preoccupied with all things snowy to deliver a uniquely hatched collection of original Christmas songs. Ezra Idlet and Keith Grimwood have made a name with a family brand of entertainment that combines humor, harmony and imagination. There's plenty of each on Merry Fishes to All, but this is truly a record wrapped with the kids in mind. Surveying the seasonal landscape, the flaky duo sizes up the disappointments of getting clothes for Christmas, having a birthday on December 25, and getting a Cheese Log! In between there's a whacky reworking of a classic called "The Eleven Cats of Christmas" and some simply lovely songs even a hardened old Scrooge could love, including "Snow Is Falling" and "You Got to Get Up," the enchanted desperate plea of every kid who ever burst from bed Christmas morning before sunrise. There's only a couple limp lines drifting off here, but overall the fish are jumpin' and Santa approves. --Martin Keller

5 out of 5 stars Great music!!!.......2007-01-10

This is wonderful music for families. The music and the musicians are very entertaining--the humor can be appreciated by young and old alike. The music is creative and the musicians are very talented. We as a family highly recommend this CD.

Really loved this so much so that I gave it for presents this Christmas.
"The Eleven Cats Of Christmas" soon became a favorite of my grandson's and there are too many to list that are my favorites--"I Got A Cheese Log"; "Clothes for Christmas"; etc. Such good vocals, not heard since the 60's groups.

5 out of 5 stars Well, Merry Christmas to me! .......2005-12-21

Every year, I have to get a couple of new holiday CDs--especially, the different ones. Instead of "White Christmas" this album starts with chocolate, chocolate, and more chocolate...

This isn't just a happy album, though. Trout Fishing shows you the good and bad side of Christmas. How many of you lament the year you got a cheese log, clothes---or the fact that your birthday is too darn close to Christmas?

And the "Christmas Letter" at the end is just too good. If you're feeling down this year, this CD will definitely get you smiling.

4 out of 5 stars I got a cheese log!.......2004-12-25

This is a terrific album by a folk music duo. At least they are ostensibly a folk duo. Many of the songs here have accompaniment from additional musicians and have more of a rock or jazz feel to them. This album was nominated for a Grammy for Best Children's Album. And while it is indeed an album that can be enjoyed by children, it is also quite enjoyable for adults too. In fact, some of the songs here have lyrics that are a bit too sophisticated to be really appreciated by children. Most of the songs are humorous, but there are a few songs that are played "straight". To sum it up, this is a fun Christmas album that can be enjoyed by both the young and the young at heart.

5 out of 5 stars Another Grammy nomination!.......2004-12-18

I admit it. My family and I are Trout junkies...we can't seem to get enough of these 2 talented guys. We have traveled near and not-so-near to see them live. It's because they really get it, and by "it", I mean the BIG it. As in, "what's it all about?" Things like childhood, growing up, being part of a family, having fun, enjoying each other. And they are fabulous musicians to boot! This album has just been nominated for a Grammy!

With the release of this holiday CD, our annual dilemna of "do we listen to Trout or holiday music?" has been solved. We now have the best of both worlds! The songs are for the most part their original works...you haven't heard them a gazillion times before, but they will become instant classics in your family. Every song is someone's "favorite" in our house, so there are no skipped tracks.

"Snow is Falling" is my personal favorite. I can't put it in words any better than another person who wrote that a real love and respect for children shines through. As I often do when I'm listening to Trout music, I find myself inspired to strive to be the kind of parent my children deserve.

"Snow Day", "Bob & Bob", a great song about 2 "flaky little snowflakes with ordinary names", "You Gotta Get Up" and "The Christmas Letter" are also on my list of favorites. This last one is a touching and pretty song, written much like the familiar Christmas letter sent by many families to keep in touch with loved ones.

"My First Christmas" is a very fun song that cleverly uses titles of popular Christmas carols to tell the story of a baby's first Christmas. "Just Because, Mrs Claus" is a plea for Mrs. Claus to help Mr. Claus lose a few lbs, because "when he was walking rooftops last year, ceilings started cracking." The words are hysterical! After listening to "I Got a Cheese Log" I guarantee you will find yourself humming this catchy little tune at your next holiday party when you come across the obligatory cheese log. "The Eleven Cats of Christmas", or as they call it at our house, "Meow-y Christmas", is The 12 Days of Christmas meets We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Fans of the album My World will be happy to hear a reference to Chicken Joe in this song.

To summarize...great words and music as always. Thanks Keith and Ezra and congrats on the Grammy nomination. I highly recommend this CD. There you go. There you have it.

Originally, producer/bad boy CEO Sean "Puffy" Combs intended for the debut album from his Puff Daddy persona to feature nothing but non-stop party jams. Unfortunately, the murder of The Notorious B.I.G. (credited here as Executive Producer) threw an ugly spin on the album, resulting in a mixed bag of fun fluff and gangsta posturing. Puffy's delivery is thin and nasal, and his raps uninspired, but help from pals like Lil' Kim, Busta Rhymes, and protégé Mase partially make up for his deficiencies. With his unrivalled knack from nicking hooks--he pilfers from Sting ("I'll Be Missing You"), Grandmaster Flash ("Can't Nobody Hold Me Down") or classical composer Samuel Barber ("No Way Out (Intro)") with equal aplomb--Puff Daddy epitomized homogenized hip-hop. --Kurt B. Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Classic.......2005-12-26

The album is a classic especially when clean. The edited version is bad because it omits three songs, but it is good because you get to hear burps, glass smashing, and hicups to censor the curses and profanity. If you like the sounds of it edited get it but if you like originals then get the Explicit version.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as reviews say.......2004-11-27

P.Diddys debut album is considered a classic and with all the hits on it i do consider it a classic, however with that said this cd is not all that great. With the exception of all the singles on this LP it is not very good however all the songs are still listenable

3 out of 5 stars It's alright, explicit version sounds better.......2001-03-21

I know I sound like a bad lil' girl, but it's true. You know what? The clean version doesn't even sound right. All the good songs were taken off due to excessive profanity. So you're really skipping the good songs when you're listening this. A lot changes were made to this album. Track #1-The No Way Out intro sounds the same. Track #2-"Victory" the best song by Puff Daddy, and it's not cuz of Biggie & Busta Rhymes appearance. It just has a tight eerie beat. Track #3-"Been Around The World" was a popular song, both the original version and the remix have a catchy hook. The Madd Rapper skit was taken off. Track #4 (#5 Explicit Version)-"Don't Stop What You're Doing" f/ Lil' Kim is a "party" song. Lil' Kim hooked the song up. Track #5 (6)-"If I Should Die Tonight" is a just a storm interlude with Puffy talking about his grief. Track #6 (#7)-"Do You Know" has background vocals from Kelly Price. Track #7 (#9)-"I Love You Baby", Puffy's love song, features the best rapper on Bad Boy, Black Rob. Track #8 (#10)-The head-banging song of the album is "It's All About The Benjamins", yet another popular single from the album. Track-#9 (#11)-"Pain" is a depressing song, it has you thinking about Biggie. Track-#10 (#13)-"I Got The Power" has The L.O.X. doing their thing. The hook shows the "criminal" side of Puffy. Track #11 (#15)-All I gotta say about this hook of this song is "EN ESPAÑOL". Track #12 (#16)-"I'll Be Missing You" is the tribute to Biggie AKA Notorious B.I.G. featuring Faith Evans & 112. The skit from the beginning of of the track was taken off. Track #13 (#17)-"Can't Nobody Hold Me Down" f/Ma$e, Puffy just had to remake my favorite Ol' School joint called "The Message". The songs that were taken off for clean version were "What You Gonna Do", "Young G's", "Is This The End?", & "Friend".

2 out of 5 stars No Way Out.......2000-11-25

Sometimes I'm compelled to pop in my edited version of Puff Daddy's NO WAY OUT and find that it get either better or worse with each listen. I was very excited to recieve it when someone ordered it for me a few years ago, but even then I was dissappointed with it. I found that that Busta Rhymes verse in VICTORY had been removed. I now realize that this song is so much better with Busta and am now stuck with a useless version of NO WAY OUT considering VICTORY is one of the better songs. Almost every song is sampled. This album was a success when it was out and I wonder if it would have been a success without the samples. If not, you can't hate a person for trying. But it's all sampled and just as dissapointing as you might expect something from Puff Daddy to be. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE BENJIMANS is a classic and is the only song that keeps me from giving this sloppy compact disc one star. It would be wrong because this is the song that started all of those materialistic songs about money, "ice", and cars, etc... Otherwise, the beats are stinky. I LOVE YOU BABY is not such a bad song but and neither id DO YOU KNOW. PAIN is kind of depressing. The songs after track nine are boring.

P.S.- There's a track missing on the clean version.

4 out of 5 stars a rock fan.......2000-06-28

I thought no way out was pretty good. I know puffy could have done better by making some beats of his own and writing some of his OWN lyrics. but all in all it was good my favorite though had to be "It's all about the benjamins." I recommend that you buy this CD.
