More interesting (and--predictably--less mechanical) than his piano rolls, Gershwin Performs Gershwin showcases the Gershwin-conducted rehearsal sessions for Second Rhapsody and Porgy and Bess along with two Gershwin radio specials recorded in the early '30s titled Music by Gershwin. These are period pieces, for sure--the sound is shoddy, and the radio spots' commercials are as entrancing as the music that's being played. But, yes, that is Gershwin conducting and playing piano, and this is as close as we'll get to hearing these familiar tunes being played the way he wanted them. --Jason Verlinde

Customer Reviews:
the essential, the timeless, the eternal . . ........2006-04-17
The Toscanini NBC recordings of Beethoven are, as they have been from their inception - the one essential set of recordings that everyone seriously interested in hearing Beethoven as this music was intended by the MASTER to sound - should own - the centerpiece of any classical collection. I used to own these recordings as Mono LPs - and, in those long gone days, they still sounded great. We can thank BMG and its fleet of engineers for keeping Toscanini up with the demands of the times.
As for Beethoven - despite his disciple Chuck Berry's assertions (wonderful as they are) - he remains very much alive - in the words of his awesome biographer, Romain Rolland, the Prometheus of the Moderns - and Toscanini, in perceiving that the soul of Beethoven is his energy - perceives that - and keeps that tremendous, explosive dynamism at the core of his interpretation.
We can also thank BMG for including the Missa in this package, which really gives the prospective buyer an 'essential Beethoven' package in some ways - not really to be found anywhere else on the market. Although there are a number of other versions of the Missa I also like, and perhaps prefer, no attempt has ever matched Toscanini's powerhouse renditions of the 9th and the 5th (during Toscanini's lifetime the 5th was considered Beethoven's signature orchestral statement - so pervasive was his recording of that piece), the combination of both the symphonies and the Missa in their pen-ultimate recording, and classic rendering, is a rare treasure not to be passed up by any with an intent to procure a boxed set of Beethoven's symphonies.
Masterful performance of the 9th.......2005-03-22
The moment this CD started, the music filled the room and blotted out all other considerations. Toscanini's work is masterful -- this recording really grabbed my attention and held it. I am not qualified to discuss the nuances of the orchestra's playing, but I can truly say that I felt as if I was in the presence of genius. I think that Beethoven would have approved of this performance! I urge fans of Beethoven's symphonies to buy this and compare it to other performances; I think that they will agree that this ranks as one of the greatest recordings of "the glorious ninth."
A Revelation...really.......2001-06-28
For some reason my review below was not posted in its entirety. Here is the complete review...
Like other listeners, I was skeptical when these new CDs were issued. My thoughts were that the early 1990s Complete Toscanini reissue was probably the best that could be humanly done to restore the very pinched and nasal sounding originals. Since I had already bought half of that set, I wasn't about to spend more of my hard-earned money on a marginally improved RE-reissue.
I was wrong. In 1997, RCA totally reorganized and inventoried its massive vaults, which had been in disarray for decades. As a result, many original sources which had been declared "lost" were now "found." This new remastering is strikingly improved sonically over all earlier issues. Utilizing the best technology now available, RCA has also done the right thing by hiring a musician--conductor Ed Houser--rather than whiz-bang technicians to supervise the remastering. The NBC Symphony Orchestra now sounds better than ever before, with smoother strings, fuller winds, and less blotting out during fortissimos.
Perhaps no conductor of the 20th Century has been as misunderstood as Arturo Toscanini, as evidenced by the critical backlash with which he was assailed in the years after his death. That criticism was partly in reaction to the equally unbalanced adulation heaped upon him during his lifetime. I remember once mentioning to an acquaintance my admiration for Toscanini's Beethoven and Brahms, and he shot back, "He conducts everything too fast!" In fact, in comparison with other recordings and broadcasts of his era, Toscanini's conducting was not generally faster than average. In relation to TODAY'S phlegmatic tempos, however, Toscanini's pacing is definitely brisk. But what most people are hearing as fast is, in fact, Toscanini's characteristic rhythmic vitality and, occasionally, drive, which brings the faster movements to sparkling life. (The finale to Beethoven's Seventh Symphony is an example: the tempo is not unusually fast, but it SEEMS faster than normal because of the precise articulation and clarity.) Likewise, the slow movements are never dragged, and glow with Italianate warmth.
It is worth noting that RCA has made one major change in this reissue of Beethoven Symphonies: the 1949 studio recording of the "Eroica," heard in previous LP and CD versions, has been replaced by the 1953 live Carnegie Hall version. RCA does not credit the liner notes, but they are reprints of Mortimer H. Frank's excellent notes originally written for the early 1990s CD release.
RCA has so far only released Toscanini's core repertoire with the NBC Symphony--but they are more than welcome additions to the catalogue. The Maestro's recordings with the New Your Philharmonic, and The Philadelphia Orchestra should also be remastered, post-haste. Then, RCA, which has given us magnificent reissues of Kapell and Rubinstein, should get to work and replace their thoroughly botched Vladimir Horowitz reissue from the 1990s, using this magnificent Toscanini reissue as a template.

Revelatory performances with greatly improved sound.......2001-05-28
Music-lovers tend to have strong feelings about Toscanini: either they love him or they can't stand him, but few are neutral. Furthermore, even those critics who do not care for his (allegedly) driven Beethoven symphonies almost always use him as a reference point when describing other conductors. It is true that these recordings are hardly what you'd call relaxed, let alone relaxing. As others have written, it's not the kind of Beethoven that you'd play for background music. But that's part of their power: Toscanini demands active involvement of his listeners, and if you aren't willing to do that, you probably won't like these performances. They are noticeably brisker than many recent recordings. Some say that Toscanini's Beethoven is less "romantic" than other conductors, but I think that is an over-simplification. I find them to be refreshing, sometimes even challenging, but never unpleasant. This boxed set is a real bargain, including all the symphonies, several overtures, and "Missa Solemnis". The new remasterings are amazingly clear, with sound that far surpasses previous releases. BMG includes a bonus disc with examples of the old remasterings compared to the new, and you can definitely hear the difference. There's a broader, less constricted dynamic that gives a much warmer and more realistic sound, and makes these unique performances eminently listenable. A truly classic set at a very good price!

Backhaus was among the giants of 20th-century keyboard artists, renowned for his solid--some would say stolid--Beethoven and Brahms interpretations. The younger Backhaus was a more overtly virtuosic pianist with a wide repertory. This invaluable Pearl set covers his British recordings, starting in 1908 when he was only 24, and it includes composers and works he abandoned in later years when he pared his programs down to essential masterworks. So we get his only recordings of Rachmaninoff, whom he admired as the greatest among living piano composers, along with Bach, Scarlatti, and others. Backhaus's dazzling virtuosity can be heard in his abridged Brahms Paganini Variations, the Liszt, La Campanella, with its marvelously even runs, and the Weber, Perpetuum Mobile, with precise articulation at fast speeds, among many other examples. Some of his early electrical recordings fill out disc two, sounding fresher than most of the acoustics. Seth Winner's transfers on both well-filled discs are uniformly fine. Collectors of historical recordings will want these rarities. --Dan Davis

Customer Reviews:
Liszt for the ages.......2006-01-12
While Wilhelm Kempff is best remembered for his recordings of Beethoven and Schubert, no lesser authority than Alfred Brendel considered Kempff's recording of the Liszt piano concertos as the best recording ever made. We had the old lp at home, but I only listened to this disc in the pre-Liszt-appreciation years and can not comment on Brendel's assessment.
Brendel himself exposed pianophiles to Kempff's outstanding recordings of Brahms and Liszt works that he included in the discs devoted to Kempff in the great pianists of the 20th century series. Indeed, the recording of the two Liszt legends, in despite of the outdated recording, still remains my favorite of these great works.
Doing some internet surfing in an attempt to wash away the sour taste of Hough's disappointing recent recording of Liszt's Suisse I came across the historic album. While this two disc sets also contains works by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin and Faure, I will focus here on the Liszt, which is truly impressive.
Recorded in August 1945 just months after the conclusion of WWII and the destruction of Germany and its political structure that Kempff himself in no way opposed, the serenity that characterizes his performance of the Liszt works is strangely at odds with the situation "at home".
Despite the obvious shortcomings in the mono recording technique this set is still an easy first choice for Liszt's au Lac Wallenstadt, Eglogue, Au Bord d'une Source and Gondoliera. While Kempff was a pianist whose top speed was only half of that of his contemporary Horowitz, these performances all exude mastery at the highest level. Especially Au Bord d'une Source gets a performance that leaves most competition far behind. Liszt and refinement are not words that appear in the same sentence with too high a frequency, yet here Kempff proves the opposite to be true. Clearly better than the version that was included in the aforementioned compilation there is a sense rest and delicacy that has not been repeated since. Kempff makes it sound childishly simple completely masking the highly tricky nature of this challenging piece. It is interpreting to compare this interpretation to the one that Horowitz made in 1947. There is little doubt about the latter's "raw pianistic horsepower" which results in the most shiny set of waves on record, yet this performance gets bettered by Kempff's almost Mozartian performance. The very same is true for the other Liszt pieces both on water (Wallenstadt, Gondoliera) and earth (Eglogue).
Highly recommended for the collector!

The young Claudio Arrau here exuberantly demonstrates the ease with which he could play such demanding works as Balakirev's Islamey. But the plush tone and intellectual integrity that informed his later work is here too, joined to overt virtuosity. So Arrau's later Philips issue of Schumann's Carnaval, fine though it is, must yield to this 1939 Parlophone, which also probes beneath the surface but is more incisive, more vivid in its contrasts, and fleeter of foot. It's difficult to isolate the high points on these two well-filled discs because there are so many--the energy of the Liszt etudes, the full-bodied Debussy, and the robust Chopin yield nothing to the later, more self-consciously profound Arrau. Despite their age, the recordings convey every pianistic nuance, thanks to Marston's typically superb transfers. Not to be missed! --Dan Davis

A revelation.......2005-11-10
To the "bitter disappointment" critic, you need to listen to the playing, through the less than less than perfect sound. I remember the first time i heard an old old recording, i had a similar reaction. But in the end this helped me, i began to listen to the playing instead of what the engineer's wanted me to hear. In this age of robot super virtuosoism, these aged discs, despite their sound, are a breath of fresh air, you are essentially listening to a performance with little to no editing(beside the reduction of background noise.) If what you want is simply the music, go buy a discount disc of some no name pianist playing what you want, but you seem to care who is playing and that makes me wonder if you can really hear what makes a great pianist. Maybe you should stop listening to those people who told you so and think for yourself. The funny thing is, the sound on this isnt even that bad by historical standards. If you cant get over this, you are going to be depriving yourself of a lot of great playing i.e Cortot, Moiseiwitsch, Furtwangler, early Richter, etc. Open your ears, pal.
A complete, definitive, superb collection.......2002-05-19
At last, here is what any serious Arrau collector could have always wished for. Never before we had the chance of listening in the same compilation to Arrau's only recording of Liszt's Valse melancolique, or Arrrau's forgotten Vocalion recordings, or Arrau's 2 recordings of Chopin's Etude Op.10 No.4 made in 1928 and 1929. Completion has a merit and value of its own. Sound engineering is superb. Deeply felt congratulations are due to Marston. I only wish Marston would release Arrau's 1940s recordings with the same professional zeal as applied to these pre-1940s recordings.
bitter disappointment.......2000-12-04
Unless you are a musicologist who is a specialist in piano technique with an ability to completely ignore the noisy background of ancient recordings, this set of Cds is not for you. I am a lover of Mr.Arrau's lyrical style and when I saw this set I jumped at the opportunity and purchased it. To my bitter dismay these recordings have not been cleaned up at all and paying $33 for Cds I cannot listen to on my modern equipment is not something I am happy about. Some might say I should have known better, but I have purchased Cds of older recordings that have been upgraded for todays' critically sensitive equipment. I was very pleased with them. A little noise I can respect but Cds that are this poorly produced and expensive I cannot. These belong in the realm of professional pianists or musicologist who dote on any historically informative source regardless of production quality and not for the general buying public who simply want to enjoy a master. BEWARE you lovers of great music with great equipment and little interest in the academics of piano technique. Bitter Mislead Buyer in NY
Claudio Arrau - Picked from the Tree.......2000-07-13
Claudio Arrau was among the last of a group of pianists who were trained in the European style. It is sad to see that many of today's pianists seem to forego the music's interpretation. Which is why I highly recommend these recordings. It proves that a prodigy such as Arrau, after suffering the loss of his mentor, Martin Krause, can grow out of his "prodigy egg" and create a unique style of musical ideas and interpretation. His 1921 recordings of the Chopin F major Waltz and Schubert's f minor Moment Musicaux are the first recordings I've heard right after Arrau was "picked from the tree". At 18, I can hear his unique sound come out from those works. I have also enjoyed his other recordings included in these recordings, including an incredible performance of his "Islamey" of Balakirev. His Busoni recording of the Elegy #5 is interesting. It has been recorded that Arrau was a big admire of Busoni and played his works with much enthusiasm.
I sincerely hope that this is the first of many releases of his early recordings because it is a testimonial to his unique interpretation to these composers

Great Music.......2004-10-11
I bought the Classical Jazz Quartet's Bach album last year and love it. This compilation of all their recordings is equally great and an incredible bargain. Like the Bach, this entire album is beautifully played and recorded. Each CD has more than 70 minutes of first rate intelligent and swinging jazz. If you like this combination of instruments, you will love this set.
