Amazing Gilels!!.......2001-12-07

This CD contains perhaps the best of piano plying ever. The young Gilels is here showing what is possible on the piano. His technique is marvellous and the richness of ideas is totally out of this world. His phrasing and softness of sound is like one want to cry, and the power of his Liszt makes you get gooseskin. This is a "must have item" for anyone who loves classical music and the piano. "Why is not Gilels mentioned as the greatest of all pianists?" is the thought that strikes your mind when you hear this CD. I can only think of one other pianist that can manage to keep up this kind of level, Vladimir Ashkenazy (for example "The Young Ashkenazy" vol. 1&2 on Testament, his recording of the Chopin Etudes in "The Russian Pianoschool" and his Prokofiev Piano Concertos on DECCA). This CD contains some wellknown pieces from the pianolittrature and some less known. You have the Schumann Toccata and The Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody. These are played without compromise, rythmically and you really feel Gilels have one line going throughout the whole piece. The Rameau is showing the genious Gilels from the peak of beauty in phrasing, sound and feeling for the forming of music. You have not heard anything before you have heard this CD!!!

Georgian folk music at its historic best.......2002-08-19

This recording is the first CD of Georgian folk songs from the beginning of the 20th century to be commercially released. Fans of Rustavi and other recent Georgian choruses will be fascinated by the contrasts in the styles of singing. This CD is a must-have for all lovers of Georgian music and indeed all lovers of traditional polyphonic singing in general. The notes provide very interesting biographical and historical information.
