5 out of 5 stars An Admirable, Distinguished Collection Of Helene Grimaud's Earliest Recordings.......2007-05-25

This is truly a magnificient box set which demonstrates the early artistry of one of our finest contemporary pianists, the celebrated French pianist Helene Grimaud. It's an amazing collection not only because it was recorded when Grimaud was in her teens and early twenties when she was contracted to Denon, but more importantly, it demonstrates just how accomplished a musician she was at the start of a brilliant career. Her excellent playing of these works, especially of the Schumann and Brahms pieces, can hold their own against legendary competition from the likes of Claudio Arrau, Alfred Brendel and Murray Perahia, to name but a few of the most noteworthy interpreters - past and present - of these scores. However, I think the real gems are her spellbinding, exquisite performances of the Rachmaninov piano concerto and solo pieces, which I find as admirable as those I've heard from Vladimir Ashkenazy and Zoltan Kocsis, to name but a few. Those unfamiliar with the earliest phase of Helene Grimaud's distinguished career as a celebrated solo pianist will find this box set most rewarding.

5 out of 5 stars Not just exceptional piano playing for a teen-ager - exceptional piano playing, period........2006-12-03

Brilliant Classics, a cheapo-cheapo label based in the Netherlands, has licensed from Denon the five recordings which launched Helene Grimaud's career, and marketed them at a price which makes them a steal. Miss Grimaud was 15 when she recorded the first of these five, the Rachmaninoff collection, in 1985, comprising his second piano sonata (in Horowitz' abridged edition) and a selection of Etude-Tableaux, plus two Preludes. She went on with Schumann (1st piano sonata in 1987, Kreisleriana in '88), Chopin (1st Ballade) and Liszt (Dante Sonata - both in '87), Brahms (second piano sonata in '88 followed by third piano sonata and Klavierstücke opus 118 in '91), and it was all topped-off, in 1992, by the concerto recordings: Ravel's G major and Rachmaninoff's 2nd, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted bu Jesus Lopez-Cobos. She then moved own to Erato, and now DG - and that was it for Denon.

So these discs span the 7 first years of her recording career, and it is not easy stuff that she tackled either. These are among the most daunting compositions of the piano repertoire, not only technically but also musically.

It would be unfair to Miss Grimaud to say that these are astounding recordings for a 15-to-22 year-old girl. These are astounding recordings, period. Throughout she displays unflinching muscularity, gripping rhythmic bite, magnificent control of the long line and the succession of variegated moods, from drama to lyricism, and admirable attention to the inside voicing and complexities of contrapuntal writing. All these recordings are not just fine visiting cards for a fledgling pianist - they are equal to the best. Brilliant as reissued the Denon discs as they were originally, short timings and all - the Rachmaninoff is 44 minutes long and the longest of the five is under the hour - but given the price and the excellence of piano playing it is still a bargain.

Miss Grimaud is now in the public's eye almost more for her infatuation with wolves than for her pianistic skills - and the Brilliant release surfs on the wave, albeit with some discretion, by the choice of its cover art. But judging from these recordings, one suspects that this kind of claptrap is almost detrimental to her cause. The wolf hype would easily lead you to think that some wise-axxed PR was trying to make up by that tacky attention-catcher for what her mere pianism was unable to achieve. Not so. Miss Grimaud's pianistic and musical gifts can amply stand on their own. Let the wolves howl, and hats off to the pianist.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Music - Great Value.......2004-07-31

This box set consists of 5 CDs of Helene Grimaud's beautiful piano playing. These CDs were originally released by Denon which has a great reputation for audio quality. Grimaud plays Rachmaninoff (Piano Concerto 2, Piano Sonata No.2 and others), Ravel (Piano Concerto in G major), Chopin (Ballade No. 1), Schumann (Piano Sonata No. 1 and Kreilserana), Liszt (Apres une lecture de Dante), Brahms (Piano Sonata Nos. 2 and 3 and Klavierstucke Op. 118).

A lot of great music beautifully played and recorded without breaking the bank.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Best Chopin Etudes Ever! Wrong notes and all.......2004-10-17

This set would be a great introduction to Alfred Cortot. His Etudes are the finest on disc, though new listeners will need to get used to the performing methods of the 30's. Cortot himself is an aquired taste, he often hits wrong notes and overuses rubato, something all pianists of the era did. If you are curious about historical pianists and need a place to start. there is no better disc than this, and give it a chance, if for some reason you prefer today's etudes to Cortot's know this, his teacher was Chopin's favourite pupil, and you will never be closer to hearing them the way they were meant to sound,

3 out of 5 stars A fine testament, but with some laboured playing.......2004-07-04

This is a fine historical testament to the playing of the important legend Alfred Cortot: the program selection is thorough and attractive (save for that one campy interpretation of Liszt's 2nd Rhapsody, which belongs in the garbage).

Every aspiring pianist should listen to Cortot's recordings at least once, and Cortot's devoted fans like to boast of his limitless vision.Yet I find it partisan to say that he is consistently brilliant. I have nothing against wrong notes; yet his often-praised recording of the Chopin Etudes is, to my ears, laboured. I hear a lot of struggling in it, and in very many cases the technique seems to get in the way of the music. Take the strained first Etude, for example, the insecurity of his No. 23, or the choppy F major No. 8. Listening to Cortot's Chopin Etudes personally makes me irritable and I find myself only returning to a select few (in the flitting account of the F minor Etude, Op. 25, for example, Cortot's true genius shines through). I prefer, for example, the more gentle poetry of these etudes played by his near contemporary, Guiomar Novaes.

For all its tender whimsicality, Cortot's reading of Schumann's `Carnival' is too balmy for my taste; though I would never say that his vision were peccant. The two highlights of this disc, for me, are Cortot's savage and at times magical account of Schumann's `Symphonic Etudes' (a favorite interpretation of mine), and the passionate account of `Kreisleriana'.

I also removed a star because of the CD itself. The transferring is solid, but I don't like having 48 pieces crammed up on one CD, and would have preferred it had been divided into three Cds; also, the packaging, though visually very nice, is annoying: in order to emulate a LP record, the discs slip out from a very tight casing, which probably lets dust in and makes the discs easily scratched (my CD has already begun jumping, so I guess it scratched while trying to slide it out).

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Artist of the 20th Century!!.......1999-06-02

Cortot is, in my opinion, the greatest interpreter of piano music that this century has witnessed. True, he missed a lot of notes, but what energy! what passion! what freedom his interpretations convey. He represents the lost "Golden Age" of pianism- the age of artistic integrity and excessive rubato! Pay special attention to Schumann's Kreisleriana. Cortot's version has never been equaled, not even by Horowitz himself. His J'eaux D'eau is not only unabashedly sensuous but also one of the fastest versions ever recorded. His Chopin E'tudes, though quite a few notes are missing, are the most energetic ever recorded. Their tempestuousness shows Cortot at his best. What he lacks in accuracy, he more than makes up for with sheer force of energy and tonal beauty. Cortot, with perhaps the exception of Kempff, plays more beautifully than any other artist. His music-making is pure poetry. He was never afraid to make music his own, and this integrity makes his recordings the most rewarding that I've had the pleasure to hear. The spontaneity will delight those listeners tired of the overperfection and timidity of todays interpretations. One more recommendation. Though not on this album, Cortot's 1933 recording of Chopin's masterpiece, the 4th Ballade, is in my opinion the best recording of Chopin period. He does more with the musical structure of the piece than any other artist, and I've heard numerous other interpretations- Hoffman's, Horowitz's, Richter's, Ashkenazy's, Moisewitch's, etc.I would recommend also the 3-cd set of Cortot, Casals, and Thibaud playing various chamber pieces in trio ensemble. This set also gives one a taste of Cortot's conducting. In his lifetime, he was a noted conductor and premiered Wagner's Parsifal in Paris. Well, enough said. Bye it or miss out.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Superlative interpreter of Romantic Piano Pieces.......2006-02-12

Mr. Duchable brings delicacy, clarity and great feeling to his interpretation of all three composers, to the point of making sound fresh and new again. His precision and real finesse makes the romanticism of a Chopin much less heavy and ponderous than it can be.

The Schumann Carnaval is a real revelation and quite innovative as well.

Why don't we hear more about this superlative pianist?

Bravo, et chapeau bas (hats off) as the French say.
