Tauber for the first buyer.......1999-01-02

Richard Tauber was, in my opinion, the most seductive and complex singer of this century. His voice was excellent, but not in itself, just as a vehicle for an infinity of shadings, in a plethora of styles. He was arguably the greatest ever operetta singer but his gifts were perfectly expressing themselves in lied, in popular song and in a great part of the opera repertoire ("heldentenor" excepted). Like Kreisler in violin playing, Tauber represented the essence of the Viennese spirit. His vocal specialties included the sweteest mezzavoce or headvoice one could hope for. He was accessible and highly refined in the same time. For the very low price of this Gala CD, you can taste the complex artistry of Richard Tauber, both in his German (better) period and in the "English" one. The reason I'm giving 4, not 5 stars to this CD is that I believe his all-German CD concotions to be more valuable. But for this price...

How to present a simple folk song........2002-07-26

Richard Tauber's recordings continue to be reissued. This CD includes a series of German folksongs he recorded with Mischa Spoliansky at the piano in 1926. Highly-prized by serious music lovers, who regretted the fact that Tauber was wasting his talents on the down market, popular repertoire of his time, they show how this extraordinary singer could find exactly the right manner to present a simple folk song.

Tauber finds exactly the right manner for the other items collected here also, although some of them do in truth fall into the down market category, and the orchestral accompaniments are sometimes unworthy. All are sung in German, some in dialect, and the famous Tauber "mezza voce" is freely used.

Collectors will find many ratities here and the transfers are as good as can be expected given the age of the originals, dating from 1926 to 1935. 74 minutes, however, gets to sound perhaps like too much of a good thing, especially as there is only a very slight pause between each track.

Why must record companies endlessly churn out the same familiar stuff, when Tauber recorded many hundreds of songs and operatic items?

And, as another reviewer has justly indicated, at least make the CD contents audible. It's just too irritating to have to keep altering the volume because some engineer didn't bother to get the level right in the first place.

Isn't it possible for recording companies to set a common standard of volume level, particularly when the originals were recorded in a constricted dynamic?

Okay, apart from the rant, Tauber still sounds fine, but some less stale material would be nice. How about next time including some of his radio and stage recordings, such as excerpts from his final Covent Garden performance as Don Ottavio?

Of the eight Lehar items, four are sung in English, and Lehar himself is the conductor in another of them. The recordings date from 1927 to 1939. Rarities include two little songs in which Tauber provides his own piano accompaniment.

Everything Tauber attempted gets my attention. I don’t wish to hear again, however the adaptation of the Strauss waltz “G’shichten aus dem Wiener Wald” that is included here. I eagerly await a reissue of something called “Love Lost Forever More” which featured in “Blossom Time”, one of Tauber’s films.

David Lennick’s transfers are satisfactory, but the volume level is very low.

Here is a great opera and lieder singer in a light vein. One might suspect that Thomas Hampson, famous for his high seriousness and dramatic projection, is slumming, but his glorious voice, superb vocalism, incredibly clear German diction, and infectious enjoyment give even the corniest arias a persuasive authenticity, despite occasional musical exaggerations and a certain intellectual overrefinement alien to the carefree, spontaneous Viennese idiom. Listeners familiar with these operettas may be surprised to find a baritone singing roles long associated with great tenors such as Richard Tauber and Jan Kiepura, both also operatic stars, but though the range does seem a bit high for Hampson at times, he makes them completely his own in sound, inflection, and spirit. He varies the inevitable reprise of the first verse with great imagination and vocal resourcefulness, including a magical mezza voce and a triumphantly ringing top, and captures the simplicity, piquant charm, humor, and parody of both the words and the melody. The orchestrations tend to underline the corniness of the music, but the playing is terrific. --Edith Eisler

A bit grim and forced.......2005-09-24

Over the past twenty years Hampson has set out to prove that he can sing anything a baritone voice could wrap itself around, from Bach to Broadway. He does amazingly well, but this CD is a miss. Hampson is a lot of things, but light and smiling isn't two of them. He blusters and sometimes shouts, a far cry from the melting insouciance of echt Viennese style.

A "Must" Have!.......2003-10-27

Just received this glorious CD and believe it's probably the most outstandingly beautiful one I own of Mr Hampson's (and I own many). Each track is an uplifting joy! This is Hampson at his melodious best.

Musicianship, but no sparkle.......2002-12-11

Mr. Hampson spends as much care and and craft on these songs as he would on lieder, but the results were disappointing to me. The zest and sparkle that I expect from Viennese operetta is just not there. So, my vote is for less restraint and musicianship and more "joyful abandon" in performance.

FROM VIENNA WITH LOVE.......2000-10-25

Thomas Hampson takes us on a nostalgic trip to old Vienna as we listen to signifant works of the masters of Viennese operetta. The voice is rich, warm, and unabashedly romantic as he caresses each lyric and musical phrase with obvious affection. His "Auf der Heide bluh'n in die letzten Rosen" by Robert Stoltz and "Du bist die Welt fur mich" by Richard Tauber are tender and heart wrenching. He also embraces works by Lehar, Strauss II, Millocker, Zeller and Kalman with gusto and feeling. Of the dozens of operetta recordings I have heard in the last two or three years, none bring me more satisfaction than this generous collection by Mr. Hampson with its lyrical vocalism and lush orchestration. Just when you think it can't get any better, it does. A true delight for operetta devotees.

Fine singing of German by a non-German.......2000-10-24

I had to take off a star only because German language operetta lyrics are almost always better sung by a singer who speaks German as their natural language. Hampson's performances of an excellent selection of highly enjoyable arias are superb, with the sole, very minor negative of the non-germanic diction. Baritone or tenor, this CD is a fine investment which you will play many times.

Tauber's latest Naxos CD.......2002-07-18

This is a good selection of the familiar and the not-so-familiar - for example, the Barber of Seville aria is unique, I believe, in the presently available Tauber material on CD (please correct me, with details, if that isn't so). Tauber was highly thought of for his Rossini performances, during his early time at Dresden, and it's helpful for students of singing that some of his Rossini is at last generally available again (even in the sometimes curious sounding german versions).

On the other hand, it's a pity that the second Troubador aria has not also been included, as has been the case in many of the vinyl LP selections previously released of Tauber's recordings. The CD playing time comfortably would have allowed for the inclusion of the suggested item.

Otherwise, this is a most interesting and excellent value-for-money release, for which Naxos is to be well commended; much better value (in terms of playing time and content rarity), in my opinion, than the previous Naxos CD containing some of his non-operatic recordings.

Does anyone have any information, please, as to whether Tauber ever recorded the aria "Oh, Paradise" from Meyerbeer's "The African"? I would be very grateful to have any information on this matter, which has intrigued me ever since I saw the 1948 film, "The Richard Tauber Story", starring Rudolf Schock, who portrayed Tauber singing this aria in the film.
