Amazing, raunchy Frankie "Half-Pint" Jaxon at his best!.......2006-08-29

Frankie is one of my favorite artists, and this is my favorite compilation of his work. He was a vaudevillian, a female impersonator, actor, singer, and band leader. He performed bit parts in both Bessie Smith's film short (St. Louis Blues) and Duke Ellington's (Black and Tan Fantasy), which were filmed on the same day, with the same set, same supporting cast and same supporting band (James P. Johnson's). Frankie also performed with Tampa Red and David Cross.

These pieces are in the hokum style, sexually suggestive and jaunty, often performed with truly remarkable jug accompaniment. Frankie is an energetic and enthusiastic performer, accompanying his pieces with yips and cackles. In some of them, he takes on the female role, in others the male, and in some, both. You can hear the vaudeville influence in some of his song's introductions: "I'm going to sing you a song entitled, "Roses are red, violets are black; if your pants are too loose, pull in the slack" and then proceed to sing something totally unrelated.

He does great renditions of "Corinne," "My Four Reasons," and "I"ll Dance With the Guy Wot Brung Me." "Down at Jasper's Bar-B-Q" will make you hungry. The most remarkable piece is the previously unreleased "Operation Blues," probably the one piece on here that would get you in trouble if you played it on air at the radio station.

If you are a fan of pre-WWII recorded music, this artist and CD are a must for your collection.

Quite a good disc........2002-09-27

This is quite a good disc and well worth owning. The Austrians at Document are incredibly thorough at assembling many bizarrely esoteric tracks; however, they are not quite as good as the French on Chronological Classics at the transferrs from 78s to CD: some tracks have alot of surface noise; still, this may add to the interest, i.e. it really sounds like you're playing a real 78 on your hi-fi. Fun in a quirky way. Real Americana.

Frank Hutchison: The best of the pre-war white bluesmen.......2000-09-13

This a great intrduction to what is sometimes called "white country blues". Hutchison was an incredible talent when allowed to showcase his blues leanings. Unfortunately he had to record what the labels thought would sell so some of the tracks on this disc are not what one would call traditional blues. That should not stand in your way of checking him out. Just listen to "Logan County Blues" or "Train That Carried My Girl From Town". Wonderful slide work is all over this disc. I will warn you that on a small number of tracks the sound quality is somewhat poor but overall that is not a problem For an even better intro to this genre of music, pick up Columbias "White Country Blues: A Lighter Shade Of Blue". This is a fantastic 2-cd set featuring a wide variety of artists (including Hutchison). This disc opens with a devastating instrumental version of KC Blues. Snatch it up!!

Honky Tonk Gospel.......2006-08-24

Altho this title is out of print, the first 16 tracks can be found in the compilation 'Spreading the Word, Early Gospel Recordings' put out by JSP records. copyright 2004. their number JSP7733A.
Arizona sings and plays some of the best honky tonk boogie woogie piano i've heard since Fats Domino. It's a real toe tapper, and a joyous song to boot!

Its so close to much of the church music we still hear in Norway, especially in small churches out in the countyside
