Whether you are a complete novice or an expert in classical music, this album is really worth it getting to know the music of English composer Sir Edward Elgar.

To a complete novice or a person unaware of the following: You've probably heard the band or orchestra play the graduation march at every school or college ceremony, to a point that you can easily hum the catchy tune with your head. If you ever wondered how this notable music was originated, you quest for finding its roots stops here. That famous music is the first of the five marches titled "Pomp and Circumstance" composed by Elgar and was originally used for ceremonial purposes in England.

This CD is excellent for music appreciation purposes no matter how much you are exposed to classical music. Get to know some other piece the very composer of the famous graduation march wrote. Truly deserves in you own personal music library shelf. The recording quality isn't too bad (and I've heard some recordings with even more poor or less advanced quality), put the performance is all top-notch. Plus, at a budget price, it's all good.

(Unlike most other performances, in that first march, an organ is added toward the conclusion, for an even more dramatic effect.)

I bought this CD because it featured two of my Elgar favorites, Enigma Variations and the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, and I was disappointed in both. Although Nimrod was pretty good, the rest of the pieces were almost boring. The first Pomp and Circumstance march was incredibly fast, almost to the point of being ludacrious. The sound is bad though, and it included the Crown of India Suite, which I really didn't like too much except the last 2 movements, which are pretty cool. All in all, only get this CD to add a different recording to your library; it does offer a quite different presentation of some classic English songs.

Buy this for the Crown of India.......2000-07-21

Buy this for the rarely performed and recorded Crown of India Suite; it may not be a great piece, but it is atmospheric, evocative, and generally well performed in this recording. For the other pieces, the competition is simply too stiff--stick with Boult (EMI), in particular. Sound is just average for the time it was recorded (1970s).
