    Album Description

John Gracie's voice was meant for Christmas carols! It is consistently stated that John Gracie will surely put you in the Christmas Spirit. John also knew how to produce a Christmas album to instill the Christmas spirit, this CD is intimately produced with the prominent instruments being John's voice and the nylon-string guitar. He's added some nice production touches with the music box feel on Away in a Manger, the trumpet on God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, the cello on O Holy Night, the saucy fiddle on Winter Wonderland and his own children singalong on the Children's Medley. John sings the melodies as they were written. He says why change songs that have remained in our hearts for hundreds of years. The song that makes people go out and buy this CD is the John Gracie original, Cape Breton Christmas Morn, written around his own memories of growing up with his family in Cape Breton Nova Scotia. People say they can relate to the lines that talk of Mom baking pie'! s with a love that's found deep in her eyes and the image of Dad in his big chair as friends come to call. John wrote this song while his Dad was dying of lung cancer, so there is no doubt that people can sense the love and emotion that comes from the lyrics and melody of this John Gracie favourite. Fans comment that it's like having John in their living room, the sound is so intimate. This album is guaranteed to be your favourite for the Holiday Season!

    Album Description

I Remember December, was recorded in 1994 and features the enormous talent of Timmins Youth Singers'Alumnus Patricia O'Callaghan...a rising star at that time and now acclaimed as the foremost cabaret star of her generation by Billboard's editor Timothy White.

Also featured is an exceptional Northern Ontario Celtic/Folk artist by the name of Kevin Closs, whose songwriting and vocal skills are unsurpassed and truly unique in quality.

The Timmins Youth Singers, conducted by Rosanne Simunovic and accompanied by Susan Steel on piano and Gordon Simpson on keyboard ,give an inspiring performance on this album and the selections featuring the choir, Patricia and Kevin are pure magic. An album to rekindle the wonderful and magical memories of Christmas!

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding choral Christmas collection.......2003-12-18

Timmins is a mining town in Ontario, Canada where Shania Twain lived for several years of her childhood. The Timmins youth singers (now the Timmins concert singers), founded by Rosanne Simunovic, are a choir in which there are about two female singers to every male singer. They have recorded a series of Christmas albums, of which this was the first. Helped by the appearance of both Patricia O'Callaghan and Kevin Closs as soloists, this 1994 album has proved hugely successful and deservedly so.

The songs are a great mix of old chestnuts and original material. If you are looking for a collection of obvious songs, you'll find some here, but not many. Classical composer John Rutter wrote the first two songs (Good ale and Blow blow thou winter wind) and also arranged the ancient but rarely recorded Here we come a-wassailing. Old-fashioned Christmas, Unto you this night, Let their celestial concerts unite, Let there be praise and I Remember December are among the songs that are new to me.

Patricia was originally a member of the Timmins youth singers and has since become a successful cabaret singer. Patricia has a clear, operatic soprano voice, which she controls perfectly as you can hear on the three songs she sings - Have yourself a very merry Christmas, O Holy Night/Cantique De Noel (both featuring her as soloist) and I remember December (which also features Kevin Closs).

Kevin is a renowned Celtic folk singer-songwriter and would seem to be an unlikely choice of guest on an album of choral music but his contribution is outstanding. He is the featured soloist on The Christmas song and Unto you this night.

This is an interesting choral Christmas album made more so by the addition of Kevin and Patricia as soloists on selected songs.

5 out of 5 stars From Carol Swanson at WWW.ChristmasReviews.Com.......2003-12-06

Rosanne Simunovic, the accomplished founder and conductor of the Timmins Youth Singers (subsequently called the Timmins Concert Singers), told me in recent correspondence that I Remember December is the group's most popular CD. It is easy to see why.

Snow, children, and Christmas make for a potent blend, and that potential is realized on I Remember December. This CD features 15 wonderful tracks, nicely blending popular favorites with classical compositions. On the classical side, Composer John Rutter, a great favorite of mine, has three winning songs here, beginning with the opening number Good Ale. Although it may be somewhat disconcerting to have youngsters boisterously singing "Bring me good ale!", the upbeat and celebratory tune sets the tone for this fine holiday offering. As the young singers move into Rutter's Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind, the ambiance becomes much moodier, and you can almost feel the cutting winter wind whipping through Timmins. The final Rutter number, Here We Come A-Wassailing, is a natural fit for these young voices; you can just picture the children moving up and down the snowy streets, wassailing with natural joy and energy.

As for popular numbers, Christmas Is presents a wonderful solo by featured guest artist Kevin Closs, and when the Timmins Youth Singers do The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year, the sentiment rings entirely true. The short, but fun, Jingle Bells almost explodes with cheeriness; the young singers' enthusiasm permeates every note.

I Remember December ends on another high note (literally). Guest performer Patricia O'Callaghan (a former member of the Timmins Youth Singers) possesses a crystalline soprano voice and joins with Kevin Closs on the title number. Their voices form a lovely blend on this bittersweet tale of holiday memories. It should be noted, too, that O'Callaghan does a masterful job on the prior cut, singing a gorgeous soprano solo on O Holy Night/Cantique De Noel.

Considering that these immature voices are relatively untrained, the Timmins Youth Singers demonstrate a surprisingly even musicianship throughout. Timmins, the hometown of Shania Twain ("Timmins' Singing Sweetheart"), obviously must have music magic in the water. After all, Timmins (in northern Ontario) is not a major metropolitan area (population about 43,000); supporting a quality vocal ensemble like this one in such a setting is no small feat. In fact, in recent times, the Timmins Concert Singers have gone on sabbatical, although their web site and their conductor remain quite active. The group already leaves a substantial legacy of music (A Christmas Legacy and Scenes From A Dream, both also reviewed on this site) for their many fans throughout North America.

If you are looking for a well-balanced set of memorable holiday songs presented by a talented youth choir, you have found the right CD. You will remember to put I Remember December on your audio system each December year after year after year.

What a beautiful CD. The voices, the instrumentalists are just wonderful. Soloists Patricia O'Callaghan (O Holy Night & Have Yourself A Merry Christmas, I Remember December) and Kevin Closs (Christmas Is/The Christmas Song, Unto You This Night, I Remember December) and the outstanding voices of the Timmins Youth Singers make this CD a memorable experience.

5 out of 5 stars A Memorable CD for Christmas.......2001-10-27

I purchased this CD a couple of years ago and was so impressed with all the performances. The variety of the music, the excellence of the choir and soloists were consistent from track to track.

Actually, I play this CD all year round. The enthusiasm and joy of the singers is a welcome relief on a dismal workday.

Kudos to the Timmins Youth Singers, Patricia O'Callaghan(nice to hear her sing Christmas music...what a talent!) and Kevin Closs(an equally wonderful talent) for producing such a gem!!

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Delicate jewels of Christmas music.......2004-02-19

The album title displays Middle English spelling and capitalization conventions, such as they were. It looks funny to us, but "ther" it is. "Ther is no Rose" is but one of 26 short vocal works on this album from the Renaissance period. Some of them celebrate Christmas, some meditate upon it; some are secular, some sacred; some are art music, some are folk songs; all are beautiful, and many have inspired later composers to write more elaborate versions. The simple originals on this album, however, have their own distinctive charm, and when performed simply and appropriately as here by the group Virelai (named after a French song form popular in the 14th and 15th centuries, usually having courtly love as its subject), they are delicate jewels of music.

Virelai has five members: Catherine King, mezzo-soprano; Jacob Heringman, medieval plectrum lute, tenor and bass Renaissance lutes; William Lyons, Renaissance flutes and recorders; Susanna Pell, viols, lute and recorder; and Sarah Cunningham, viols and Renaissance harp. By the credits you see that authentic period instruments are employed. These are not souped-up versions of Christmas carols for modern symphonic ensembles, but chamber-scaled authentic editions designed to bring to life the sound-world of so long ago as scholars today think it may have been. Don't expect a file of valved trumpets to blare out "Joy to the World" or for a phalanx of blended strings to swoon into "Silent Night." This is the real Christmas music of a few hundred years ago, before electronic amplification, Technicolor, and Leopold Stokowski.

This is not to say that nothing here will be familiar. Some of the melodies are heard regularly still, such as "Es ist ein Ros entsprungen" (usual English version, "Lo, how a rose e'er blooming") and "In dulci jubilo." A few others will be familiar to serious classical music lovers from being quoted in works of Bach, Honneger and others, such as "Wie schön leuchtet," Vom Himmel hoch," and Nun komm' der Heiden Heiland." These help one to get oriented; thereafter, the lesser known tunes can be absorbed as they are heard. Helping also are scholarly notes from Ms. Cunningham (see cast list above) explicating the source and circumstances of each selections. I was surprised to find Praetorius identified as a "Lutheren," but otherwise all was well.
