A good basic collection.......2006-11-10
An excellent introduction to classical music.......2006-10-18
Very Beautiful!!!!!1.......2006-10-05
Still Stuck on Beethoven.......2006-08-22
My interest started in this genre of music because I'm researching my ancestry in Prussia and this is the music of those times. Never mind my ancestors were poor peasants who probably never got the chance to hear such wonderful music... when listening to these CDs, I'm taken back in time... to a royal court in Europe... to another place in time. The music is inspiring, relaxing, invigorating.
I have yet to listen to all the CD's in the set. I'm stuck on Beethoven! Wasn't he AWESOME!?!
I think this set is a wonderful introduction to classical music!!!!!

As far as the content of these CDs go, they are fantastic. They have every waltz, march, and polko of Strauss II that you could possibly want, as well as a nice addition of "Radetzky March" by the composer's father. If you are looking for a Johann Strauss Jr. CD, get this one!

Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13
classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08

One of the best CD's out there!.......2007-05-10
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-03-25
The singing of both ballads and catches belongs to a long and venerable tradition in England. The natural habitat of the of the catch was the tavern, while the ballad was known in a wider variety of social settings as well as the stage. By the end of the 17th century, ballads were collected by connoisseurs of popular culture and published in anthologies. The main source for this recording, 'The Catch Club, or 'Merry Companions', was printed in 1762.
A quote from the catch-philosopher (of 'Come, come let us drink') is offered by the Baltimore Consort: "...wine and good cheer will in spite of our fear inspire our hearts with mirth..the time we live, to wine let us give, since we all must turn to earth...."
This is an excellent collection of songs; quite interesting and varied. The instruments are played skillfully, and the voices, for the most part, are good quality. However, as with all 'folk-like' songs, the diction is not always clear, and that is very true of several of these on this disc. The female voices were more difficult to comprehend much of the time. The text is printed out, so ultimately familiararity will make them easier to understand. I do like the disc, and think that it needed to be done.As to a previous criticism concerning the fact that it wasn't 'true' barroom singing. Of course, it's not!!!If it were, you would not understand any of it!!!!!Enough said.
Prelewd to Postlewd.......2005-09-28
The Baltimore Consort play with life and vigour, with a good deal of improvisational flair, not being bound to texts and going through the production of notes as if mechanically. This is true to the spirit and nature of the early music, in which performers often had to 'play by ear', neither being able to read music nor having printed music even if they could. This is particularly true of the songs on this disc, where many are derivative of anonymous jokes and stories, and much of the music is likewise folk-tune and anonymously composed.
Some of the songs can be rather shocking. As Mary Anne Ballard writes in the accompanying notes, 'We must remember that in the days before indoor plumbing and pooper-scooper laws, everyday life was of an earthier flavour than it is today.... The men of the singing clubs and the ladies of stage poked fun at themselves and their companions with wit, pleasantry and contrivance.'
The names of many of the composers of these pieces have been lost to history, particularly the more folk-song oriented ones. However, some well-known composers are represented among the pieces here - Purcell, D'Urfey, Aldridge, and others.
The regular players include Mary Anne Ballard (viols), Mark Cudek (cittern, guitar, recorder and bass viol), Custer LaRue (vocalist/soprano), Larry Lipkis (recorder, viols), Ronn McFarlane (lute), Chris Norman (flutes), Webb Wiggins (tambourine and 'virginals'). Some artists are known from other Dorian productions, such as Ronn McFarlane on the lute in the collection 'Greensleeves'.
Added to the regular consort players are the Merry Companions, including Peter Becker (baritone), Alexander Blachly (baritone), Paul Shipper (bass, belch-canto), and James Weaver (baritone).
One more addition includes a guest artist, Lorenzo Labbrobacio, playing of all things, the 'fartophone', a rather mysterious instrument indeed. Labbrobacio defies identification on the internet other than references to this disc, and so the mystery deepens.
This is music that is interesting, truly fun to listen to, entertaining and has a quality about it that makes it a joy both in musical and humourous tones.
Sounds like they're singing Christmas carols.......2004-11-09

The Godowsky Renaissance Continues.......2007-05-12
For me by far the most interesting thing here is the Java Suite, an almost 50 minute set of twelve short character pieces whose inspiration was that of the music of the Indonesian island, Java. Written in 1925, Godowsky's suite must have seemed exotic to early listeners. The first piece 'Gamelan' may very well have introduced that word and the sound of gamelan-style music to many westerners. (Of course, French composers in particular had been influenced by this sort of music back in 1889 when a Javanese gamelan played at the Paris World's Fair, and indeed it is notable that much of Godowsky's music necessarily sounds like similar works by Debussy.) Technically much of Godowsky's Java Suite makes use of both whole-tone and pentatonic scales. Thus, even to the untrained ear, the music sounds Eastern.
Among the more striking effects in the Java Suite are the heavily perfumed atmosphere of 'The Gardens of Buitenzorg' ('Buitenzorg' means 'Sans Souci'), the quick repeated-note fourths and fifths of 'Chattering Monkeys at the Sacred Lake of Wendit', the use of Debussyan chords of the ninth in 'Boro Budur in Moonlight' and the stylized gestures of 'A Court Pageant in Solo'. I found myself going back again and again to hear this suite.
Godowsky's delightfully lilting pianistic transformation of Johann Strauss II's 'Wine, Women and Song' is virtuosic in the extreme. Scherbakov tosses it off as if it weren't and stylishly at that. Lucky us.
For anyone even more than a little interested in Godowsky's music, this release is a must. And for those who enjoy exploring unfamiliar 20th-century piano music but who don't cotton to extreme modernism, this release is self-recommending. It should be noted that the formerly full-price Marco Polo label is now selling its new releases at budget price.

Album Description
Here's a funny experiment: find yourself a radio (the old fashioned kind that's not connected to your computer). Turn it on and spin the dial. Wherever it lands, leave it and just listen for a few minutes. Most likely one of two things will happen: either you'll quickly enter the candy-coated landscape of your childhood, fondly reminiscing about old relationships, better time and your first sexual experience or (more likely) you're going to be madder than hell and ready to smash things to pieces. If the latter is the case then we offer you a sounder solution than trashing your pad. Wine, Women and Song, the latest effort by San Francisco outfit known as Porn (The Men Of) has enough destructive might packed into 50+ minutes to make up for almost any duration of pop radio exposure. If you're familiar with Porn, then you're aware that they always have guest players on tour and in the recording studio. This time out reunites brainchild Tim Moss (Ritual Device) with longtime pals Billy Anderson (far too many to list) on bass and Dale Crover (Melvins, Nirvana) on drums. Their first recording in almost three years (though technically the true follow-up to their Man's Ruin debut American Style,) Wine, Women and Song picks up right where Moss & Co. left off drifting aimlessly in the coldest reaches of space where the stars align in such a way that it almost seems predestined that an album could be born of equal parts Black Sabbath, Verve and Ornette Coleman. Angry fits of rhythm section melt seamlessly into avant-Iommi jazz and back to bone-crushing rawk - and that's just the first track.
Now the choice is up to you. You can run scared back to your precious radio la la land (commercials and all) or you can wrap your heads around Wine, Women and Song. The choice is simple.

Thinking man music.......2006-10-09
heavier than a wet blanket.......2005-11-27
Porn (the Men of) are the heaviest band around. period.
Wine, Women and Song is very thick, flowing music.Singer(Tim Moss) sounds like a dirty old pervert when he sings, very low pitched and gruff. Dale Crover plays drums on this album, so If you know who he is (hint: the Melvins) then you already know his style, which always seems just a little bit off tempo, just slightly behind where he should be playing. Billy Anderson fills in on the bass, Billy being the producer/engineer of such bands as Neurosis, Sleep and Mr.Bungle, to name a few. This album has a definite Pink Floyd feel to it, very trippy and disturbing at times. Awesome production as well..one of my favorites of 2004, if not my favorite. trust me, if you like heavy, slow, disturbing dirges, this is for you. Buy it.
