This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

    I am a big fan of Vivaldi and his operas, but when it comes to purchesing a whole opera on CD it can get get expensive. This has a nice compilation of arias from Farnace. Particularly beautiful is the haunting Gelido in ongi vena and the marvelous Io Crudel?, not to be missed, a great buy for the first time Vivaldi opera listener!

        Carlo Curley is a competent organist who brings his own unique interpretations to his performance of well-known Bach organ works. One will note almost immediately his uncommon phrasing in the famous opening line of "Toccata and Fugue in D minor," clipping the end of the phrase compared to how it is usually interpreted. Perhaps he is right and the popular interpretation is not; only a musicologist would know for sure. But certainly, it is different, which is not always a bad thing. And Curley is unapologetic in his approach to these pieces. He breaks a number of "rules," applying what some would call "romantic" principles to baroque music. Curley's argument is that Bach was limited to the technology of his day, and would have interpreted his own pieces differently had he been blessed with more modern technology. Of course, this argumentation can be carried too far, but I believe Curley does not. A purest should not purchase this disc, but one who is interested in a new "reading" of some of Bach's most famous works may find this set valuable.

        This disc could aptly be described as a Baroque 'Greatest Hit's' release. Roy Goodman leads his Brandenburg Consort through some of the best-known Baroque pieces with grace and skill. The Hyperion label specializes in Baroque music, and this disc pretty much includes the best-known works from the period's most recognizable composers. There are a number of Baroque compilation discs out there, so the competition is stiff. Still, this 1992 release is DDD and offers 24 selections by 17 composers. It provides a comprehensive overview of Baroque music, and each piece has been expertly played and recorded. I can't think of a better and more affordable introduction to Baroque music.

        Arne was a major musical force in 18th century London. His GOD SAVE THE KING and RULE BRITTANIA sealed his reputation,and he was music director at Vauxhall for twenty years. His keyboard writing is full of surprises.and some of his themes are most memorable. Well worth owning!

        Kyung-Wha Chung has been one of the greatest violinists along with Perlman and Zukerman.
        This is her recording of recital pieces since her sensational recording 'Con Amore' more than a decade ago.
        Her sound is beautiful on this recording. Not Sarah Chang or Gil Shaham beautiful, She is making Kyung-Wha Chung sound, Which no violinists can make. She made us cry, she made us freeze, and she now makes us laugh with these light pieces. Listen to her Bach Air on G. And if you feel her, you will cry for sure.

        Anyway, I love the Vivaldi CD even more. It's really superb. It calms you down while at the same time motivates and excites you from the bottom of your heart. She's a great artist.

        This is only the second recital disc she has done (the first was 'Con amore' in 1987). Chung is at her best here, warm and fiery at the same time - unlike just the impulsive Chung of 20 years ago. Ever since the late 1980s, her playing suffered from an uncertainty in the technique and expression - burnout maybe?. Anyway, since the middle of 1990s. her playing blossomed into a warmer, more 'pleasant' playing. Still fiery, but as I said, warm. And this disc shows Chung at her peak. She fully realsised the different facets of emotions the pieces can convey to the listener. Listen to 'Tambourin chinois' she really captures that 'Oriental feel' about the piece (very Viennese at the same time too) - I am Korean, so I know about these things (except for that Viennse thing!)! The whole disc is a pleasure to listener and I recommend every bit of this disc to anyone interested in Chung's playing. Buuuuuuuuuuuuy it!

        My only regret for this recording is that Chung chose to record only the fifth movement of Stravinsky. I recently heard her playing the whole five movements of Stravinsky's Duo Concertante. I hope someday soon she will record the all five movements of Stravinsky. This Souvenir album is a beauty of beyond description.

        If you know and like the pieces included on this cd, buy it. That simple. I thought this cd was out of print... nowhere to be found. I've been listening to it for 15 years and treat it like gold. The most valuable track, in my opinion, is #8: Sharon Isbin performing the Chaconne on the guitar. My guess is that very, very few people know about this recording, and it is absolutely breathtaking. Literally. I now have more than 20 versions of the Chaconne, including several violinists, guitarists, pianists, even an orchestral version, so I feel qualified to provide my strongest recommendation. As a benchmark, I will add the following: if you enjoy Segovia's and/or Williams' performance of the Chaconne (both of whom did it, I believe, in well under 14 minutes), be prepared to listen with an open mind. Isbin's performance, in my opinion, is unparalleled (among guitarists). Julian Bream's performance is just a hair short.
