John Rutter's groundbreaking research and subsequent performing edition of Fauré's beloved Requiem has enabled us to hear the work as the composer originally intended. His first version of the piece included only a chamber orchestra with lower strings, harp, timpani, and organ. Four years later, Fauré added two movements and slightly expanded the orchestration. This is the version that Rutter and his inimitable Cambridge Singers perform here-- and it's a glorious revelation, especially if the only Fauré Requiem you've heard is that for full orchestra, which the composer himself neither created nor approved. Rutter and his singers give us a wonderfully sumptuous yet detailed performance that benefits tremendously from the newly realized clarity of inner lines and from the richly colored orchestral textures. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
It's Beauty Revealed, At Last.......2007-01-11
This Collegium COLCD 109 is a later release of the Collegium COLCD 101 which I purchased circa 1985 after reading glowing reviews in Grammophone magazine. COLCD 101 is labeled Stereo/Digital. COLCD 109 is labeled Stereo/DDD. Is it a re-mastering? Liner notes don't say, but the new version provides noticeable improvements in vividness and clarity.
The release of COLCD 101 was a watershed event. John Rutter had questioned conventional performance versions of Faure's Requiem, those which used full symphony orchestras and Wagnerian-like soloists. Yes, it is a requiem, but Faure's ideas are very different than those found in, say, Verdi's Requiem. Instead of hellfire and damnation, Faure evokes serenity, peace and love. Rutter's historical research proved that Faure intended for his work to be performed in small, intimate settings where the orchestra and choir would be minimal and, maybe, use boy sopranos. Rutter's CD of the historical, 1893, version is like an expert restoration of an old painting where a century's grime is wiped away and the work is newly revealed in it's original beauty.
A 1990's CD of the 1893 version exists on Naxos 8.55076S by Jeremy Summerly and the Oxford Camerata. It, too, is beautiful and of similar performance quality, though conducted at a slightly slower tempo. I find Rutter's version more "right", but that's just personal preference.
OK, I'm a sucker for the 1893 version.......2006-01-17
John Rutter made substantial changes to the previously most-performed version of the Faure Requiem when he recorded this. He went back to the version of 1893 to do so, rather than using the more famous, more heavily orchestrated later version. One difference is that the violins in the Sanctus are transposed up an octave on this CD compared to the way in which they were played in the later Requiem. I find this recording to be beautiful and timeless, and definitely not over-orchestrated.
To me, Faure's great contribution with the Requiem was that he showed a firm refusal to judge other people as well as compassion in the face of death. This went against the beliefs of the Catholic church at the time, which emphasized hellfire and brimstone, and Faure was heavily criticized for putting as little mention in as he could get away with regarding the Day of Judgement. This compassion shows in his work and makes it comforting rather than frightening. It has been called a "lullaby of death."
I also enjoy the other vocal pieces, particularly the Ave Maria and the Cantique de Jean Racine, which is probably familiar to many people who are not really aware of Faure's career. These songs have a pure, clear sound which is not ruined through excessive orchestration.
In my opinion, John Rutter did a fantastic job with this material, and it's one of my favorite CDs.
Life has been engulfed in time.......2003-08-06
This requiem represents a complete shift in the general tone of the requiem as a genre. The vision of life and death is impregnated with a feminine light, the light of the ocean softly illuminated by the sunshine of Normandy, of the Graceful Coast. The figure that stands behind the music, that accompanies the dead person into the grave is no longer the masculine Germanic death that punishes man, nor even the furious feminine French death that challenges man, but the soft and comforting figure of the mother Mary, the universal comforter who takes the hand of each one of us, as if we were crying lost children, to make us pass the dangerous door that leads beyond life. This Holy Mary for whom Fauré has written so many Ave Marias, is promising us the end of time and our introduction into an everlasting stormless, painless and noiseless world that represents the very positive vision of a real world that is the negative vision of life. Photography is not far away. Everyday life becomes a life of strife, struggle, noise, violence, war, speed, work, exploitation and alienation, all elements seen as negative, and death is the negation of it all, is the positive virtuality that has to become our reality overthere. It is thus in perfect agreement with the vision the impressionists introduced to defy photography and bring art beyond the blaring image of reality a photographer brings up with his machine. The eye of the artist goes beyond those crude colors and forms to find light and life in the depth of his retina. Fauré is the impressionist painter of death as the real life beyond the surface we have to contemplate and suffer everyday. In other words virtual is beautiful and real is dreadful. Happiness has to be found in virtuality and not in reality. Fauré is bergsonian, who sees eternity beyond the flow of time. Fauré is proustian, who sees life beyond the loss of memory. This explains the erasing of the Dies Irae because there is no anger any more in the ascent to the eternal memory of what does not exist yet. This is a requiem of timelessness and nightlessness.

Requiem- a masterpiece........2002-04-21
This exquisite collection has so many gorgeous songs that move me to tears. In Sanctus, the violin is so pure, so beautiful, its wrings my heart. This is real music, real art, crafted with such care, that it is a true privilege to hear it, not to mention sing it (which I have done, and I loved it). It is an encredible CD, and I would encourage anyone to buy it.

high quality but lacking emotion.......2001-09-01
One reviewer describes this as "no lack of sadness, bright, not gloomy, filled with sunshine"; another calls it "peaceful". I might go with peaceful. The quality is high and the recording is of interest for being more faithful to Faure's original, non-orchestral version, but I found the performance notably lacking in emotion. I would steer the reader toward the more deeply moving Naxos version (conductor: Jeremy Summerly), which is something of a gem at budget price.

Back to the basics.......2006-12-29
I've heard at least 5 different Faure Requiems (Giulini, Matthew Best, Bernstein, etc.) and this one is unique and my favorite. You have the original stripped down forces. As the most gentle of all Requiems, this is absolutely apt, for without the full orchestra, this Naxos version acheives a sublime intimacy that others, although more powerfully moving at times, are not more GENTLY moving. I think this is the key. Just a side note, but thanks goodness for Naxos, for they have allowed countless lesser-known talent be known to the world and shine... and for a bargain price at that.
A true masterpiece.......2006-06-09
Faure's Requiem is one of the most sublime pieces that has ever been written. It contains music that is almost too perfect to be real. Whether it be the opening of the "Agnus Dei", with a melody so beautiful and tender that it makes you want to cry, or the "Lux Aeterna" passage, where one gets the impression of everything stopping and a light shining down from Heaven, this Requiem is the work of a true master. As good as this particular recording is, I'm surprised it's not more well known. It is the best I've I heard, even compared to the more famous recordings. I would recommend this CD to anyone.
GENTLE AND PERSONAL.......2006-01-31
MAY I PARAPHRASE GABRIEL FAURE--"I'VE WRITTEN A GENTLE LITTLE REQUIEM, AS GENTLE AS I AM." HOW TRUE. ABSENT ARE THE SWIRLING STRINGS, THE SNARLING BRASS AND HEAVEN STORMING MASSIVE CHORAL FORCES OF BERLIOZ, VERDI AND BRAHMS. NEITHER DO WE HEAR THE CASTILLIAN PASSION OF MORALES, OR THE SOMETIMES LACRIMAL, SOMETIMES DETACHED SORROW OF MOZART. NO, THIS IS A FRENCH BEATITUDE--"BLESSED ARE THEY THAT MOURN..." AND, INDEED, WE ARE COMFORTED. THE YOUNG MR. SUMMERLY AND HIS EXQUISITE SCHOLA HAVE GIVEN US THE ORIGINAL VERSION IN SUCH PURE AND SIMPLE TERMS THAT ONE SLIGHT ERROR IN EXECUTION WOULD SHATTER THE CRYSTALLINE NATURE OF THIS WORK. NO SUCH ERRORS EXIST. ALONG WITH DAVID WILCOCKS EMI CHAMBER RECORDING, THE "OTHER" 5-STAR RELEASE, THIS BARGAIN FROM NAXOS IS AN ABSOLUTE MUST TO OWN. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
MORE PRAISE.......2006-01-25
Listneing to this CD this morning makes me think of all the debates about beauty. People argue; people try to define the word. Well, just play this music - the entire CD - and take a bath in divine beauty. Close your eyes, let the inner light rise, and forget the definitions and debates.
The BEST Faure Requiem you will EVER find on this planet........2005-12-03
If angels didn't descend from above into the instruments and voice boxes of the performers on this recording, I don't know HOW ON EARTH they could be this perfect. I bought this recording in 1994, and have sampled a number of recordings by various and sundry, only to find my memory comparing the notes and tonation to this particular recording. It's very disinct -- particularly Pie Jesu, in the smoothness with each transition between octaves, perennially soothing. You will love it.

Heavenly.......2007-03-29
This is the most uplifting music I have encountered. The angelic sounds of this choral group help me stay sane on California highways!
The Holy Grail of Choral Recordings.......2006-07-03
This was the first choral CD I've ever purchased when I started becomming involved with choir during my senior year of high school five years ago. My director was telling the choir that he had finally found his copy at a music store and referred to it as the "Holy Grail" of choral recordings. So, I went out to find my own copy and I'm still blown away by it today. I've even given copies as gifts. The music is certainly relaxing and such, but what I most value from it is the spiritual magic. The Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge (then and now my favorite choir in the world) brings every composition to life in such a way that's pure, elegant, and deep. Listening to this music and enjoying this choir has allowed me to set my own standard of singing and compositional excellence.
One Small Correction.......2004-03-06
I keep finding new things to love on this CD, including the fact that it has the first recording I found of Gabriel Faure's beautiful Soprano (or Soprano/Alto) duet Ave Maria., Opus 93. The same recording appears on another CD where the singers are named. The above description of this selection unaccountably adds a baritone. Incidentally, Faure also composed a shorter SATB Ave Maria, which John Rutter has recorded.
I only wish the recording included the complete text of Psalm 50/51 from Gregorio Allegri's Miserere Mei Deus. This might come from John Rutter's recently edited score, published by Oxford Press, if I'm not mistaken. I, for one, do not find this selection (or indeed the entire recording) too long and I believe that the embellishments at the end (mentioned in another review) are probably correct when considering performance conventions of the time of its composition.
Gorgeous music, gorgeous performances.......2003-06-19
I am a semi-professional singer with a BA in Music, and I bought this CD with some trepidation because it looked like one of those dreadful "pop classical" compilations that are everywhere lately. But it had lots of great repertoire all in on place, so I decided to risk it, and I was not disappointed! In fact, this is now one of my favorite choral CDs.
As usual, the Choir of Trinity College delivers stunning performances, and the music itself is just gorgeous. Lots of "church" favorites from a wide range of musical periods. The mood of the CD is definitely on the mellow side, but it's perfect for those quiet moods. I love this CD -- highly recommended!
Stunning collection suitable for music nuts or newbies alike.......2002-03-18
Even as an avid fan of classical music with very picky tastes, there was just so much good music packed on these two (cheap!) discs for me to take in at once!
The perfectly balanced and locked chords can really give you chills.
I gave this CD as a present to a good friend of mine who was not so familiar with the genre, with tremendous results. I think this would make a great gift to anyone with the slightest inclination towards classical music.

Great performances from a great choir........2007-03-08
King's College is a reliably solid choir. Set to doing a mix of challenging pieces, they rise splendidly and with moving effect through a range of musical styles or types. I didn't grow up on the English choral style. Frankly, I prefer German composers and that style of arrangement, but the King's College Choir is so good and so controlled that I found it impossible to be bothered by my petty likes or dislikes. Instead, I was gladly and happily swept along by the sound of Heavenly Voices.
Out of the Mouths of Children..........2005-07-30
Who can resist the incredible purity of sound garnered by a boys choir? On this beautifully recorded CD the Boy's of the King's College Cambridge Choir are conducted by Stephen Cleobury in the hall in which they perform - that otherworldly resonance of King's College Chapel. This collection separates the men from the boys in that the usual full Choir is all male with men singing the tenor and bass roles and the boys singing the soprano and alto roles.
The works performed fall into the 'old chestnut' category: Franck's 'Panis Angelicus', Faure's 'Pie Jesu' from the Requiem, Mendelssohn's 'Lift thine eyes' form Elijah, etc. There are a few works less familiar (and equally as lovely) such as the Karg-Elert 'Dritte Sinfonische Kanzone (Fuge, Kanzone und Epilog)' Op.85, No.3. The intonation and musicality of the choir is impeccable and the tone is as pure as any achieved by other groups of similar description.
This is one of those recordings for quiet contemplative moments, those times when the need to just clear the mind and be refreshed occur. Not a terribly unique recital but one of great beauty. Grady Harp, July 05

Louis Vierne 24 Pièces en style libre.......2007-01-04
Vierne was a great composer. A little hard here to imagine theses pieces as liturgical ones. At first hearing, they look more like religious inspiration on liturgical themes.
Louis Vierne (1870-1937) was devoted to the complexity of the organ despite that he was blind most of his life. After a life full of personal tragedies, he died in concert at his beloved organ of Notre-Dame. Vierne is said to be one of the most accessible organ composer and because of it, he is largely played, just as Widor, Franck and of course, Bach.
These Cds are a sort of tribute to Vierne earlier organ works with a compilation of short pieces including the two masses, Opus 30 and 62.
The Funeral March in G sharp minor, with its grave rhythm to the pedal board may have been more expressive with the cadence deliberately set to mark the steps of the funeral convoy.
Beside that, the execution by Ben van Oosten is quite convincing for those who prefer a spiritual approach to organ music. Nothing flashy, but instead, a sober and meditative style of interpretation. A sort of voyage in the traditional sense of ritual. Many good moments too in the Improvisations.
Sounding, organist and recording go without saying : three CDs to listen to, on and on.

The perfect recording.......2007-03-22
I have heard a number of soprano & countertenor teams sing the Stabat Mater since this recording was made, Kirkby & Bowman (the use of a harpsichord annoyed me in that recording) and Bonney & Scholl (the voices were mismatched, IMHO - Maria Cristina Kiehr would have been a better partner for Scholl, David Daniels a better partner for Bonney) immediately come to mind, but none move me and impress me like this recording. I think that this is one of the finest recordings of 18th century sacred music I've ever heard, it is certainly the most moving recording I've heard.
The voices of Michael Chance and Gillian Fisher blend perfectly and both sing with great style and conviction. Something of a "dream-team", to use a colloquialism, in fact. The dissonances are brought out most effectively and poignantly ... and without distracting and unnecessary vibrato. You'll never heard the seconds, sung in the opening movement, with more precision and bite than on this recording!
The King's Consort uses a small number of strings, organ and theorbo accompaniment. Robert King's choice of tempi is natural and effective. The recorded sound and the acoustical environment of the recording is perfect, neither is it too dry nor too reverberant. All in all, an ideal recording of this masterpiece from this tragically short lived composer. I own this recording and, although I've heard other recordings, including the one with Andreas Scholl, a favourite singer of mine, I have never felt tempted to buy another recording.
Excellent Interpretation.......2007-01-12
There are many recordings of Faure's Requiem. If you are looking for the best one, this recording is it. The Corydon Singers, the English Chamber Orchestra, and the soloists due an impressive job full of lyricism and emotion. The diction, the blending, and the balance between orchestra, orchestra, and soloist is impeccable. And the other tracks, which others have written on, are just as expertly performed. If looking for a recording of the Requiem, this is the one to get.
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-03-23
Giovanni Battista Pergolesi achieved only modest success during his short lifetime, but the twenty years following his death(at the age of 26) in 1736,saw an extraordinary change, turning him into one of the most-published composers of the 18th century. An Eighteenth Century French writer described the 'Stabat Mater', completed as the composer lay dying, as the 'masterwork' of Latin music'. Although this is music of great tenderness and sombre beauty, the work also includes chromatic sequences, sighing passages and dramatic dissonance straight out of the operatic style that made Pergolesi famous. The Stabat Mater is a setting of the sequence for the Feast of the Seven Dolours (sorrows) of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and was written during Pergolesi's last few months. Harmonically Pergolesi was ahead of his time; one technique he made use of was the application of chromaticism to create a bitter-sweet tone of expressive sensibility. In addition there is an operatic element such as is contained in the jaunty "Quae morebat" sung by the alto (Michael Chance). The Salve Regina with its A minor setting and supplicatory text, contains many hallmarks of the Stabat Mater; from the expressive sighing of the 'Ad te suspiramus' to the contrasting misic of the strong 'Ad te clamamus' sung by the soprano (Gillian Fisher). "In coelestibus regnis" (sung magnificently by Chance) is an example of the short type of piece that Pergolesi might have found time to write in between his operatic commisions. This is a truly exquisite and exciting recording featuring the WONDERFUL voices of Michael Chance -countertenor and Gillian Fisher-soprano. I have 2 other recordings of this music; neither of them come even close to the perfection of this one.!!!!!!
Superior recording.......2002-09-06
This recording from December 1987 in the Church of St Jude-on-the-Hill, Hampstead, London, is far superior to all other recordings of Pergolesi's Stabat Mater.
Otherworldly.......2001-03-14
I am hardly a classical music maven. I listen as others might use recreational drugs - when all else fails I hope a piece of classical music will take me out of myself and let me get a little closer to heaven. An opportunity to bathe in beauty. The reason it doesn't often work is because just as I'm about to transcend the composer changes dynamics and the bath turns into a perfect storm. Not so with this work. Forty minutes of undiluted peace, but with complexities that demand active listening. Vocals and instruments are of such a whole that I found myself listening to strings that unfolded as a voice, and vice versa. The vocal combinations and close harmonies were flawless. There was not a moment that was not gorgeous, and any loss of attention was caused by my own wandering mind rather than any jarring musical effect. These are the sounds I would like to accompany me on the big transition - they would open the gates.

Customer Reviews:
Rum-Rum.......2007-03-14
Any review of this recording that fails to mention the distracting background noise makes one wonder how closely the reviewer was listening. Throughout the Duruflé Requiem, there is a consistent noise that sounds like a needle stuck in a grove at the end of an old LP: "rum-rum, rum-rum, rum-rum..." While it is possible one might not hear it played back through speakers, it is impossible to miss through headphones.
As to the performance, I prefer the austere sound of the organ against the ethereal sounds of the chorus. My only reservation lies with the boy tremble, whose vocal output is unsteady, almost nervous sounding, as though he were being forced to sing. I don't think an idea performance with organ accompaniment exists, but this performance comes as close as any I have heard.
Rumble rumble.......2006-10-15
I just got this CD a few weeks ago because I wanted both the Faure and the Durufle. I'm not going to pick on anybody for supposed intonation problems (I listen to Bob Dylan and Ryan Adams regularly) or anything else. I really like the recordings of every piece I've heard on this CD set.
But has anybody else noticed some pretty major traffic noises during the Durufle Quatre Motets, specificall track 11? It sounds like they recorded next to a race track.
Outside of that, I think this set is a worthwhile investment.
Sublime versions and top class recordings........2006-09-03
This version of Durufle's Requiem is just mesmerizing, I have the Telarc, which is great... until you listen to this one.
Sound quality is top notch too for a seventies recording.
Deceptive Durufle.......2003-11-27
If one were to listen solely to the Faure Requiem and some of the other choral works on this 2 CD compilation, this would be a decent recording of great French choral music. However, as someone looking for a good recording of the Durufle, I was highly disappointed. Not only is the recording simply an organ reduction of full score, but the quality of singing was below what one would expect to find on a CD from a major label. Marked by under-developed techniques and inconsistencies in pitch, the recording is good if you need to learn the work in a hurry, but little else. If you're in the market for a Faure recording, this will do the job and you can preview the Durufle, but look elsewhere for a serious recording of such a rich work.
Duruflés Requiem and original intentions........2003-02-02
Both Duruflé and Fauré wrote their Requiems for choir and organ first. The orchestrations were afterthoughts bending to the excesses of public appeal and publishers demands. Both works can be wonderful with orchestra and on this CD you will find, as usual with St. Martin in the Fields, a beautiful recording of the Fauré Requem with orchestra. However, on this CD you will find the Duruflé Requiem in the original choir and organ only version, and this, in my opinion, is not only the preferable way to listen to the work - in it's original casting, but this performance is the best around with a most lush and complex tone from the trebles in the boy choir.

Agnus Dei: Classical Music for Reflection and Meditation.......2000-10-02
Make it your manifest destiny to own this compilation of music. These scores are given to us by the world's most gifted composers. Performing are "heavenly" choirs and instrumentalists demonstrating true virtuosity. Large choirs perform with such intonation qualities! There appears to be just one voice in each section. Your heart will pound when you are lifted so high you realize that you have stopped breathing; likewise, with the sudden timbre of the minor you allow yourself to remember tears. The emotional roller-coaster ride will affect your inner being. It is appropriately subtitled: Classical Music for Reflection and Meditation. It is a true gift to hear the genius of Byrd, Bach, Mozart, Faure, and others, performed so well.
