Album Description
Enjoy a little night music with Mozart and this ultimate collection of his music. This incredible 20-CD set presents the listener with all of Mozart's most famous works, from Symphonies and Concertos, to highlights of his best operas The Magic Flute and Don Giovanni. Take in his Missa Solemnis, Ave Verum and Requiem and don't forget Eine Kleine Nachtmusik...this set truly is the most definitive Mozart collection ever assembled!Customer Reviews:
A Wonderful Collection.......2007-04-11
Celebrate Mozart's 250th at a Budget Price.......2006-01-11
This 20-CD box set gathers all of his major symphonies, concertos and operas into one massive collection. All of the selections are performed by European musicians (eg. the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berliner Kammerorchester, etc.). While not household names, the music is uniformly excellent.
If you're looking for an inexpensive purchase (I got mine at a national retailer that rhymes with "Clam's Tub" for under $20!) to kick off your "Rock Me Amadeus" party, this is a great choice. RECOMMENDED

Customer Reviews:
A muzzled Walton Sym. #1, which helps.......2006-05-17
Previn made a specialty of the work when he was the youthful principal conductor of the LSO (1968-79). This is his later, kinder and gentler remake with the Royal Phil. from 1985. It's a muzzled performance, of which I'm glad. This hectic music can sound decidedly vulgar and overblown (a la Gliere). Here, the distant placement of the microphones and the decision not to spotlight the crash-and-bang aspect of the score are a definite help: you feel you can listen to the piece's inner workings without wincing. I must admit that Walton's macho idiom turns me off, and I run from performances of his music. That said, I made it through this CD with pleasure and had more respect for his First Sym. than I ever expected to.

Someone shoot that idiot with the popgun.......2002-06-07
An essential part of the experience is the audience participation - clapping in time to the Sailor's Hornpipe, bellowing out the chorus of Rule Britannia, the amazing sound of 7,000 people singing Parry's Jerusalem, even the occasional hoots, bangs and other interruptions (as long as they're occasional). It's important to capture this, otherwise all you get is a concert.
Unfortunately this recording seems biased towards the audience. The orchestral sound was muddy, but every pop, squeak, hoot from the audience was crystal clear. Towards the end I was hoping that someone would strangle the idiot with the popgun who was sitting to the right of the auditorium, and interrupting all the quieter passages.
Oh well - put it down to the acoustics of the Albert hall.
I still enjoyed the recording.

Bargain-priced overview.......2006-12-01
I was surprised to find that the opening music in his Facade is the theme music chosen for Michael Palin's hilarious Ripping Yarns, but disappointed at first when I realised that the Suite is entirely orchestral and does not include the Sitwell poems. But the music stands on its own very well, and I suppose I shall have to later invest in a CD which does include the quirky poetry.
Bryn Terfel does a great job as narrator in Belshazzar's Feast, which was previously the only other Walton work familiar to me.
Highly recommended.

Outstanding collection.......2007-02-17
The first is Previn's superb account of Symphony No. 1 in B flat minor - this hauntingly beautiful masterpiece - with London Symphony Orchestra. There is simply no better interpretation, so this is the one to have. Sound is good, though vintage stereo (1966).
The second is Jascha Heifetz' recording of the Violin Concerto, with Walton conducting. Heifetz commissioned the work from Walton, so what we have here is a classic musical collaboration. An essential and decent mono recording (1950).
The third is the Cello Concerto with Gregor Piatigorsky, another commissioner, Charles Munch conducting. The recording sessions took place soon after the world premiere in 1957. Again, we have a classic recording in fine old stereo sound.
In addition, throw in a good recording of the Viola Concerto (Bashmet & Previn, recorded all-digital in 1994) and a fine performance of the Sinfonia Concertante in the 1927 original version (Stott & Handley, recorded in 1989), and there is no reason for not purchasing this - indeed - essential set.
Worth it just for Sym.#1.......2005-12-06
AN INNOVATING CONSERVATIVE.......2003-07-02
With the symphony any performance that is not forceful and spiky would be a non-starter, and it is good to hear Previn's 1967 LSO account with the sound freshened up. The brass blast away as if this were Bartok or Shostakovich at their fiercest, and if you view Walton as a radical this is the performance for you. For me this symphony, for all its dissonance, is as faithful to the 19th century scheme as Elgar's are. Simultaneously with Previn there appeared a version from Sargent and the New Philharmonia with Walton himself involved in some way. Speeds are by and large similar but the overall impression is of grandeur rather than ferocity, and to this day I like it better in general. You can hear the difference in approach from the very first bar with the ultra-hushed and absolutely smooth timpani-roll from Sargent. Oddly, where Previn scores most, for me, is in the slow movement where he captures the loneliness and melancholy better, helped by a slower tempo. It's the Previn approach that has prevailed, and I don't think Sargent is now available.
Previn is the conductor in both versions of the viola concerto that I own, using the 1962 reorchestration. Bashmet is more introverted and less serene than Kennedy, but both are first-rate. If it were just a matter of this one piece I would still recommend Kennedy who benefits from a fuller and richer recorded sound, but we are dealing here with an entire package also containing two concerto performances of unique authority. The package is completed by an interesting version of the sinfonia concertante in its original form, apparently preferred by Walton to his revised score, and the late and very un-radical cello concerto played by its dedicatee. This is probably not a work that arouses fierce disputes regarding the merits of alternative versions, and anyone owning the Piatigorsky account will likely leave it at that, especially as P is in his familiar partnership with Munch, not one to let a performance sag.
I adore Walton. He did not change the language of music in any but superficial ways, but his genius was truly original and he performed a major act of mercy by jolting English music out of what Constant Lambert called the cowpat school, to which music-lovers of similar prejudices to mine are either deaf or wish we were - I operate to a crude rule of thumb that any composer who has inflicted musical settings on Housman or who has an excessive interest in English folk-music is a composer to avoid. As an early sign of Walton's fine discernment I note that he took exceptional measures to avoid being sent back to Oldham. Sound judge indeed.

A mellow reading from Colin Davis, removing Walton's edge.......2006-07-12
Compared to Previn, Davis plays down the motor rhythms and snarling raw chords that shocked earlier audiences. Even with some of the edges smoothed, this is aggressive music in the opening movement and finale. In the wrong hands it can sound crude and blatant, not for its modern idiom but in the composer's intentions--is he driving hard just for the sake of driving hard? We've heard a lot fiercer music since then, of course. The LSO plays with the kind of enthusiasm and extra flair one expects in concert. The engineers place us up close, and I'd say overall this new CD beats even Previn's remake on Telarc for natural, detailed sound. The absence of a filler, however, makes for a stingy timing of 45+ min.
Davis hasn't ventured into Walton's music before this to my knowledge, and there are plenty of people who don't like this brash, unsettling work, but if you want to hear a committed, very musical reading in excellent sound, here it is.
