Diamond Music - wow!.......2006-11-10
Minimalist classic fails in subliminal messaging.......2006-04-18
Sadly, I had hope the recording would contain subliminal messaging to coerce anyone within earshot to buy me lavish jewelry for birthdays and Christmas. I have to report that so far, even playing this judiciously at holiday times, it has not worked for me.
The music samples don't do it justice.......2006-03-04
However, I'm finding other diamonds in the rough (pun intended). Specifically, Adiemus Variation II (track 5) which is another beautifully put together piece. My only regret is that I wish there were more variations of Palladio like those that were done on the de Beers commercials (I recall 2 or 3 variants during the run).
Aaron Copland is still the top composer of the 20th century, but Palladio alone puts Karl Jenkins in his company.

Martin Short's 2006 Broadway show Fame Becomes Me is a love letter to old-school showbiz doubling as a send-up of self-serving celebrity memoirs. This "comedy musical" is obviously the work of someone who adores not only the golden age of Broadway but also that of a certain style of entertainment you may call vaudeville variety. The idea is that Short is looking back at his own life (with some libertiesif a celeb out there is not known for outrageous behavior, it's gotta be him) through songs and skits, and with the help of his own TV personae, such as Jiminy Glick and Ed Grimley. It helps that said songs were written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman: The cocreators of Hairspray can zippily pastiche everything from The Wizard of Oz to Wicked. For this supposed ego trip, Short has also surrounded himself with a crackerjack cast that includes MAD TV's chameleonic Nicole Parker, versatile funsters Brooks Ashmanskas and Mary Birdsong, and Carpathia Jenkins, who blows the roof off the joint with the self-explanatory "A Big Black Lady Stops the Show"-a number that mocks the Broadway habit of hiring African-American belters for to deliver one song. In an ironic twist, Jenkins herself is woefully underutilized in Fame Becomes Me but at least she gets one of the two bonus tracks, "Frieda May's Lament," to herself. --Elisabeth VincentelliAlbum Description
In the grand American traditions of musical theater, sketch comedy and shameless self-promotion comes Fame Becomes Me, Martin Short's uproarious new comedy musical that has critics in hysterics! In Fame Becomes Me, the "phenomenally gifted" Martin Short (New York Post) and his "superb" cast (USA Today) sing, dance and mercilessly mock others as they race through a whirlwind revue that's part variety show, part celebrity send-up and "the best time on Broadway!" (WNBC-TV). Featuring original music from the composer and lyricist of Hairspray and South Park, Fame Becomes Me is Broadway's most riotous party and you're invited!Customer Reviews:

Karl Jenkins's The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace is a departure from his Adiemus recordings into the more conventional territory of large-scale choral and orchestral writing, though his customary passion for mixing languages remains in full force with texts in English, Latin, and French. Jenkins has said that The Armed Man was inspired by the "L'Homme armé" masses that were popular in the 16th century, and he makes this debt clear with passages written in a neat pastiche of Palestrina-style renaissance polyphony. There are also echoes of earlier and later styles, including plainchant, medieval ballads, John Barry-style horn writing (think Goldfinger), and even a direct quote from Rigoletto (the choir imitates wind sounds at one point as in Act 3 of the Verdi opera). The smorgasbord manages to hold together, probably because Jenkins's obvious sincerity shines through every note. The London Philharmonic Orchestra plays beautifully, and treble Tristan Hambleton performs his solo with ethereal clarity. The National Youth Choir sings with vigor and accuracy, even if the young sopranos sound a little thin at the top of their range. If you liked the soundtrack to The Mission, this should press all the right buttons. --Warwick ThompsonCustomer Reviews:
Accessible summation many musical styles.......2007-06-12
In this commissioned Mass Jenkins sets out to sum up War and Peace in the 20th Century (it was a millennial project) and he mimics if not just the music of the 20th C. at least the music that we listened to in the century, at times you'll think Faure, at other times Monteverdi (although the liner notes say "Palestrina.") The overall effect is like a score for a movie, but a good score at that. The broad selection of texts is itself derivative from Britten's War Requiem and in a tip to multiculturalism also includes a Muslim call to prayer (somewhat pretentious in a Christian Mass, I think).
The performances are strong with the National Youth Choir remarkably polished for their age and experience. Jenkins conducts and one could say "over conducts"--as others have noted, the emphases seem a bit forced and many numbers end with a sudden staccato, an odd effect. The recording is the result of multiple takes in many different studios and the resultant mastering reflects this: The CD in no way sounds like an actual performance of the work. As John Lennon said of one Beatles album, "Play loud" and it's impressive.
One man's pastiche is another man's familiar favorite and despite the lack of orginality this Mass is likely to have enduring popularity.
Simply wonderful and moving.......2007-01-11
What a wonderful way to remember the last century! What a way to meditate on the prospect of peace or war in this one. This selects from the styles and melodies most primal and meaningful. At least it seems so while listening to them. I first became familiar with Karl Jenkins Mass when it was selected for Sacred Concert on Sunday morning and was so taken with it I almost stayed in the car to hear the end rather than go into church from the parking lot! I searched for it at our local libraries that afternoon and not finding it there took the plunge to order it from Amazon to add to my already overstuff Amazon furnished house. With the way this century is going so far this mass has good reason to be played over and over again.

Worth the wait...........2007-07-20
I think it is very good. The first 2 tracks are just plain good. Next, I like tracks 8, 9, and 10. I like how track 10 starts out very dark and mysterious. The rest are good, but nothing really ground breaking.
My only beefs about the album is that track 1 ends too abruptly. It starts taking off after the "bridge?" then just stops. Is track 2 a continuation? Also, some of it sounds a little too much like Patrick O'Hearn with the familiar keyboard patch that he uses alot. I would liked to have heard something more innovative for the lead instrument. I think they should have had David Darling with his haunting cello join them too.
I fully recommend this album. This has been in my changer since I bought it on 6/13. I listen to it at some point every day.

It's impossible to say what track is my favorite as they ALL are so good. If you like Helpling's "Sleeping on the Edge of the World," and Jenkins's "Beyond City Light" (another favorite bike-ride-soundtrack for me), then it's a no brainer that you'll absolutely LOVE "Treasure." You can't go wrong with this one. Even listeners new to this kind of genre should be able to appreciate this wonderful CD.

Everything about Bryn Terfel is over-life-size: his physique, his personality, his breath-control, and of course his extraordinarily beautiful voice. This recording displays his stunning vocalism and versatility to full advantage, but its title belies its content. Alhough it does include some simple pieces, the execution is fussy, overdone, and calculated for maximum external effect. The program ranges from Mozart, Pergolesi and pseudo-Bach to Sondheim in arrangements that are pure Hollywood, complete with throbbing strings and rolling drums, often destroying the spirit as well as the letter of the original compositions. It begins with Mozart's heavenly "Ave verum" arranged for baritone solo and chorus, frustratingly cut off after a few phrases (another setting of the same text by Karl Jenkins, written for Terfel, is more satisfying, being complete and original). The splendid baritone Simon Keenlyside joins him here as well as in the opening number of Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater;" originally for soprano and alto, this must be the baritones' revenge on female singers who usurp songs written for men, like Schubert's and Schumann's cycles. Franck's "Panis angelicus" also inexplicably becomes a duet; unfortunately, Terfel's and tenor Aled Jones' voices do not match. Bach-Gounod's popular "Ave Maria" is all swells and exaggerations. The rest of the program consists of folksongs, hymns, show and film tunes, inflated to operatic proportions and generally ending in a fade-out or a flourish. Even the title song is anything but simple. This record is not for purists who like their music performed the way the composer wrote it, but aficionados of great singing will love it. --Edith EislerCustomer Reviews:

Bryn Terfel's Simple Gifts.......2006-02-25
A Heartfelt Offering Reminiscent of An Earlier Era.......2006-02-15
This recording is wonderful on many levels. The selections are an unusual mixture of classical sacred music, spirituals, hymns, Lieder, Austrian Christmas and Gaelic songs, musical numbers and movie theme songs harmoniously combined to touch the soul of the listener in a gentle ebb and flow of devotion, intensity and tenderness. All of these songs are beautiful in and of themselves and in his hands, we experience them anew.
Bryn Terfel sings with the commitment necessary to make the awesome challenge of simplicity look easy. To my way of thinking, he is the most communicative and articulate singer today, bar none. He is a poet who savors the sound, feeling and meaning of each and every word and marries it uniquely and faithfully to the music. He transports the listener into the life of a song and transfixes us each and every moment. His enormous talent is not overwhelming or distractive and is inextricably and wholly intertwined with the music. This is greatness and it is very, very rare today.
I like the inclusion of the choir in several of the numbers as it reflects on the nature and context of the songs. I am less fond of the selections with the guest soloists as I feel they do not match his ability to "get inside" a song. The orchestra and orchestations are sensitive and enhancing.
This recording is simply wonderful and should have a broad appeal. It will move and inspire the believer, satisfy and fulfill the otherwise spiritual, calm the troubled and renew a flagging soul.

A further expansion of a talented composer.......2007-02-01
For consumers that are only aware of Diamond Music, Jenkins has composed a whole collection of works, five to be exact, that are under the Adiemus title. You must, I repeat, must expand your collection to include some if not all of these titles, particularly Adiemus I, II & IV. These are such emotionally charged works, fashioned with a chorus of female singers and soloists and full orchestra. Do a quick search and you'll learn more about this themed works. But I digress....
Requiem is unique in that the composer uses a full chorus including male voices and a baritone soloist in the short work, "In These Stones..." This is the first time I'm aware that Jenkins embraces the SATB structure. What an exceptional inclusion to his body of works! I've picked out a few favorites including Introit, Dies Irae, and In Paradisum. However, Pie Jesu shines as a gorgeous heart felt work that effortlessly soars between child soloist, soprano soloist and chorus. Guaranteed to bring tears to your eyes. Finally, the short work that closes this CD, "In These Stones Horizons Sing", calls to mind Ralph Vaughn Williams and a touch of Glass. As a singer in many choruses, I found myself itching to bring this short piece to the attention of various choral directors. It conveys such a powerful quality, visions of Celtic settings arise in my mind. If you are a choral singer, I assure you, you will find something to inspire you. Enjoy Requiem and look into Jenkins other works as well. You won't be sorry.
Karl Jenkins: Requiem - an eclectic requiem for the 21st Centuray.......2007-01-11

Gasps & Goosebumps! A 2,000 Mile CD!.......2005-10-28
Boy was I wrong! Cut#1 is possibly one of the most startlingly beautiful pieces EVER written. It takes a minute to get going, but it is breathtaking. It caused me to gasp "Wow!" and raised the hair on my arms each time I listened to it. The gorgeous payoff of this piece comes in at 6 minute 51 seconds. As another reviewer said, they used this piece in a live show and I was wondering as I listened to it why someone wouldn't put it to that great use.
This music not only gives you mind pictures, it can transcend distance OR time. I felt myself standing on a cliff in the Himalayas looking down across space and time. Incredible! Karl Jenkins is definitely an unhearalded musical genius.
Cut #14 Cantilena is what I would like played at my funeral if I go having lived a truly good life (which I have.) It is a fitting denouement of a good life. Same for #15 Elegia.
I had not read the jewelbox info before i played this CD and thought I heard Miriam Stockley. Great mix, these two artists! She is vastly talented and the Africa, Latin, Classical mix that she infuses makes this CD so addictive, I listened to it on two trips, over 2,000 miles! I will be buying more Karl Jenkins music.
