Gloriae Dei Cantores (singers to the glory of God) is a 44-voice choir from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, with a vision to promote peace and understanding among peoples of different nations and cultures. Under the direction of Elizabeth C. Patterson, Gloriae Dei Cantores has toured 22 countries in Europe and North America, with a particular mission to Eastern Europe. The choir is equally skilled in sacred choral music of all historical periods and styles and has been critically acclaimed as a master of the Gregorian chant.

I have bought Volumes I and II and am very pleased with the quality, the sound, and the style of the chanting. The lyrics are amazing, many of which come straight from the Bible, especially from the Book of Psalms. Let me know of other great Chant CD's, be they Gregorian, Amabrosian, or even Greek/Byzantine.

I generally work for long hours at my computer and it can be stressful, I read the review for this cd , because one of my customers ( I manage Bolivia Stores at Amazon) wrote a review about this cd same as he wrote a review for one of my teas and I was very intrigued because he is a very religious person that lived in Bolivia with the Peace Corp, well... The price was great and I decided to ordered it...... I just love it, it takes away the stress of a long day !
It sound a bit boring in the beginning but once you get caught for the music is just peace all around!!

I have been frantically searching for a cd with some of the old Good Friday Gregorian chants I remembered from my childhood. I planned to play it as background music for our Good Friday service at a home for the elderly. I ran a search on Amazon and this was the first cd that popped up. I ordered it, thinking it would probably not arrive in time for the service. What a pleasant surprise to have it in such a short time and at such a low price. Beautiful music that would be worth purchasing at ten times the asking price.

Gregorian Chant!.......2007-01-07

Before getting this CD, I had only previously had one other chant CD. I had listened to the CD so many times though that it had become too familiar for me so I sought out this CD and it has replaced my last CD quite nicely. The Monks of St. Peter's Abbey are probably my favorite Gregorian Choir and if you're into this kind of music I can't imagine why you wouldn't like this as well. Also, if this your first time purchasing a chant CD, know that its not really dance-like and I usually just play it in the background as I am doing my everyday activities. Great stuff!

Album Description

This three volume compilation is tribute to the genius of three uniquely talented men--a philosopher, a composer, and a pianist-musicologist. These works began with the philosophical searchings of Georges Ivanovich Gurdjieff, an Armenian intellectual at the turn of the 20th century. His homeland was the crossroad for the diverse cultures that ringed the Black, Caspian and Mediterranean Seas. His fascination with the human spirit and his searching for the truth took him on vast journeys through India, Tibet and China. A keen observer, Gurdjieff, began to accumulate bits and pieces of musical traditions. These he combined with his provocatively inspired visions as a universal symbol of his philosophical beliefs. Gurdjieff, however, did not have the musical ability to transform his abstractions into reality. Fortunately, one of his disciples was a gifted and successful composer in St. Petersburg, Thomas Alexandrovich de Hartmann, whom he met in 1917. As a fellow searcher for the truth, de Hartmann was eager to transform the raw musical utterances of Gurdjieff into sophisticated piano compositions. Those scores, sadly, were left in a state of disarray in the estate of de Hartmann. Decades later, musicologist, professor, and pianist Cecil Lytle, became the final element of the equation. In the mid 1980s, he and a team of researchers began a three year quest, scrupulously studying the scattered files of de Hartmann's scores, assembling the first truly accurate arrangements of the Gurdjieff/de Hartmann legacy. A man in touch with the philosophical, as well, as the musical nature of the works, Lytle performs them with deep emotion and unsurpassed skill. The three volumes vary in their nature. Seekers of the Truth presents the reflective, ceremonial music of Gurdjieff/de Hartmann's majestic suites. Reading of a Sacred Book contains some of their dance and character pieces of a more lively nature. Words for a Hymn to the Sun completes the trilogy with the final works of the great spiritual teacher, Georges Gurdjieff. Truly, these dramatic piano performances serve as the highest praise to three remarkable individuals.

This album set differs from the first set. It is more lively at times.My personal favorites on this set are "Prayer and Despair" and "Holy Affirming, Holy Denying, and Holy Reconciling". These selections never fail to move me deeply. I highly reccomend this recording as well as the other two volumes in this set.

Just like Antonio Vivaldi in Venice, Nicolas Clérambault in Versailles was in charge of a well-known ensemble of musical young ladies. While Vivaldi was chapelmaster of a well-endowed orphanage, Clérambault worked at Saint-Cyr, a school for the daughters of impoverished noblemen founded by Madame de Maintenon (mistress of Louis XIV). The latter-day "Damsels of St.-Cyr" give flawless performances of some of Clérambault's motets, hymns and chants. (Yes, many French Baroque composers indeed composed plainchant in a French Baroque style.) The beginning of this record is a stunner: 30 seconds of unaccompanied unison singing that combines the purity of Gregorian chant with the graciousness of the French Baroque style, followed immediately by some spine-tingling suspensions at the opening of the penitential Psalm-motet Miserere. The remainder of the disc presents motets and chants for various parts of the liturgical year, all mixing elegance, piety, and (often) good cheer--only to finish with De profundis, a Psalm-motet for burial services as strikingly anguished in its way as the Miserere. --Matthew Westphal

Here is a disc of such beauty that I cannot recommend it highly enough. The other reviewer has ably explained a bit about it, and I want to reinforce his opinion.

The Miserere (Psalm 50) has often been set very successfully, but this one here is one of the most beautiful. The texture of high female voices is quite unique to the French baroque, and is used to great advantage here. Clerambault's music has tremendous emotional power, and reflects the text effectively.

This is a release not to be missed.

A Revelation, Intensely Refreshing.......2004-10-25

Although the music on this CD is perhaps not quite as beautiful as Emmanuel Mandrin's Charpentier recording ('Grace et grandeurs de la Vierge'), it is nonetheless a revelation. Nicolas Clérambault (1676 - 1749) is one of those French baroque composers whose works have lain dormant for nearly 300 years. Over the past decade or so, some of his cantatas and instrumental works have been re-discovered (including a lovely Naxos disc by soprano Sandrine Piau). Now the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles has come up with this collection of motets written for the 'Royale Maison de Saint-Louis à Saint-Cyr', i. e. exclusively for female voices. Emmanuel Mandrin's ensemble 'Les Demoiselles de Saint-Cyr' is, of course, ideal for this repertoire: Six high sopranos and three mezzos, accompanied by a bass viol and an organ, that makes for some heady listening. The major piece here is the opening 'Miserere', 25 minutes of incredibly beautiful singing, including some excruciating dissonances at points in the text where Clérambault wanted to emphasize emotions such as regret. The other ten motets on this recording follow the church calendar; some of them are performed by several voices, a couple are performed by soloists (including a breathtakingly beautiful 'Regina caeli laetare' by Donatienne Michel-Dansac). All in all, 69 minutes of intensely refreshing listening, marred only very slightly by the background noise on the recording, caused perhaps by the acoustics at the recording venue, the Abbaye de Saint-Michel en Thiérache. The recording was made by Radio France in 1993.
