The best.......2007-04-10
Pure Piano.......2007-01-11
Not quite for that candle-light dinner .... .......2006-03-02
But, if your interest is to explore the great composers and piano literature of the Romantic era, this is a fine CD to do that for many reasons. One reason is the variety of styles and nationalities featured here. One other characteristic of the music of this period was the expression of pride in one's country (Nationalism movement). Nearly all of the composers whose works are featured on this disc were major influences in music history and showed varying degress of Nationism: Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and Liszt from Germany ... Chopin from Poland ... Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov from Russian ... Debussy and Satie from France ... and Albeniz from Spain. With such an international line-up of famous composers, you will find a wide range of musical styles, flavors and expressions to discover and enjoy. Most of the selections here are among the more famous piano pieces, so it is a good place to start. And supported by capable artists, good sound quality and some decent liner notes giving the history of the music, this CD provides a compelling journey into the piano music of the mid-late 19th century ... but maybe not ideal for that romantic interlude you might have had in mind.
PS: The title song of this CD, "Fur (for) Elise," is one of Beethoven's most recognizable and simple tunes, often heard in those miniature music boxes or even cell-phone ring tones.
Classic.......2004-04-08
And I love piano music, because I like to play piano. Don't buy it, if you like pop music, not classic ! Buy it, if you like classic. Trust me.
Great compilation.......2002-12-09

Mitsuko Uchida Plays Schubert

Customer Reviews:
Awesome.......2007-05-15
The sound quality is superb, the playing dense in personality and detail. As the previous reviewer mentioned, anyone interested in the piano, Uchida or Schubert this is a must have masterpeice.
Days and Evenings with Schubert and Uchida.......2006-01-31
This 8 CD set includes three sets of Impromptus (D899, 935, 946), Moments musicaux D780, German Dances D 820 an D790, and the Piano Sonatas numbers 4, 7, 9, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, and 21. The placing of these works on the individual CDs creates a series of eight recitals and each disc is rich and satisfying. Playing all eight CDs in one day makes for one of the most rewarding musical experiences available.
The recorded sound is superb and Uchida is in top form for each selection. This is fine as Schubert gets and the entire set is more than well worth the relatively modest price. For lovers of the piano, of Mitsuko Uchida, and of Schubert this is zenith release. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, January 06

Brendel's best recording of these.......2006-07-07
Schubert 's parting "swan songs".......2005-06-14
While generally following classical sonata form, these late piano pieces are most unique in their architecture and progression. One reference had a wonderful description of their structure and effect that was very helpful: "The late sonatas are long musical soliloqies in which the forceful direction of Beethoven's music is replaced by structures that seem to circle round their subject without ever coming to rest. This is not to say these works are in any way self-indulgent or prolix. It is rather that the conventional perception of linear time is her suspended. They have a "landscape-like" quality to them and indeed define an emotional terrain that is unique to Schubert." (Rough Guide)
Many great pianists have recorded these final works - which are truly among Schubert's finest compositions for piano - and each brings something unique to the music. Schnabel first brought this music out of obscurity ... Andras Schiff's readings are full of that Schubertian youth and charm ... Kempff exudes a thoughtful, lyrical and civilized appeal ... Richter offers a unique intensity and insight ... Radu Lupu as always a master poet ... Perahia offers his usual appealing and elegant pianism ... Uchida gives deep and songful readings (though some say overly so at times).
Among these greats, Alfred Brendel has long been recognized as one of the great interpreters of both Beethoven and Schubert. While his style is often pigeon-holed as "intellectual" or "analytical" (maybe its the thick glasses?), Brendel is no less capable of genuine expressiveness and emotional tenderness, as can be heard in these deeply-moving final sonatas. To me Brendel successfully exudes the poinant spirit of Schubert in these works and breathes wonderful expression in them. He is full of Schubertian "celebration of life" in the scherzos and happy allegros while pensive and emotionally volatile in movements like the A major slow movement(D959). In this stuning movement, Brendel's transition from the serene opening into the violent episodes in the middle is an object lesson in musical suspense and unfolding drama. Equally, the ever-so-touching opening of the last B-flat sonata (D960) Brendel admirably conveys with a poinant melancholy that a gravely ill Schubert must have felt when he wrote this movement (although others have captured its depths with more poetry). Subtle differences really; I still like his playing overall, mainly because there is a clear sense of where they are going. He is equally marvellous in the D946 Impromptus pieces and the less-popular C-minor work. But, the A-major seems the most special on this CD.
If you are an average listener with no leanings towards any one of these pianist and looking for a solidly recommended set of these final great sonatas, then this two-CD DUO set is an excellent choice and value. The sound quality of this set is very good - but does have some subtle "machine hiss" and a slight lack of depth. Most major reviewers (like Penguin Guide) also rate Brendel's Schubert very highly (as in this set or his live set also on Philips). Regardless of your choice of recordings, these last piano sonatas are some of the jewels of the piano literature not to be missed that reveal new depths with repeated listening.
Sublime.......2002-09-14
Brendel's performances are, to these ears, very convincing. He structures each of these episodic pieces brilliantly, rendering a coherent and affecting musical statement. For all its alleged waywardness, there is a transcendent sort of continuity in the music that defies analysis, expressive of a certain though mysterious moment in the composer's life; to hear the transition from classicism to Romanticism, one might listen to Schubert's late sonatas. If that seems too much like "homework," consider that, for melodic invention, Schubert is second to no one who ever presumed to write music.
The recording quality is good, considering its vintage (early 70s). For the price (two CDs for the price of one) this set really can't be topped.

This is a marvelous musical coupling: Schubert's overwhelmingly moving last Piano Sonata and the visionary set of pieces written a few months earlier. There are several outstanding performances of the Sonata currently available, including those of Schnabel, Lupu, and Curzon. For the Piano Pieces, the only performance of comparable stature in the current catalogs seems to be one by Kyoko Tabe (Denon), which has the same Sonata for coupling. Neither pianist is very heart-on-sleeve in any of this music, so if you want more overtly romantic Schubert, look elsewhere. But both Uchida and Tabe give us profoundly moving interpretations of all this music, each on such a high level that it's impossible to make a choice between them. I'd buy 'em both. --Leslie GerberCustomer Reviews:
listen with your heart.......2007-05-02
While many audiences seem to prefer the slow version played by Richter, to me, overly exaggerated stretches in the timing of movement one seems out of character with the rest of the piece. It doesn't appear to me that Schubert is communicating his farewell with despair, even in these last moments in his life; or else he would not have ended this last Sonata with such power and hope. In my opinion, Uchida balances the hesitations well with the silences; and fluidity with a clarity of articulation that resembles distantly to Clara Haskil.
A great piece of music never stands by itself; nor does it lie dormant solely with the composer, locked away in a certain century or time. It is always renewed in the understanding, the spirit of each different performer. It is an evocation not only of the original composer's intention, but also is a statement of timeless echo of the evolving nature of life.

There seems to be some controversy over the sound quality of this recording. Ms.Uchida has obviously used a different instrument here to the rest of her cycle - this has a sonorous tone, lacking in the last detail of clarity, but eminently suited to the piece. The actual engineering seems completely acceptable to me - the acoustic is warm and slightly reverberant. The sound, then, is very much crafted by the performer to reflect her perceptions of the piece. My tastes lean towards the 'audiophile', and I found this recording very atmospheric and enjoyable - it feels like sitting a moderate distance from the stage in a sympathetically voiced auditorium.

My favourite interpreter of this work remains Andras Schiff, but as an intriguing alternative view this is wonderful.
Not for every taste.......2005-04-26
Traditional Japanese music uses silence as much as sound to express its meaning and, in the first two movements of D. 960, Uchida allows the silence to have its say. Try listening to some shakuhachi music and then listen to this recording again. I guarantee it will make much more sense.
Uchida isn't afraid of a thunderclap cutting through Schubert's sweetness. The bravura she brings to the powerful sections seems even more titanic after her ethereal softness.
In Schubert's solo piano music, he seems to be expressing deeply personal feelings. Hearing how a variety of artists bring his work to life is worth the time and expense. If you're on this quest, don't miss Uchida.
Honesty, conviction, personality and poetry!.......2005-04-07
You have to recognize the enormous difficult to any serious keyboard player to play this Schubert's Sonata and win with that performance. And even if Uchida didn't reach the peak of Richter or Schnabel, for instance, I guess the time, and the expected maturity to play this work, that easily you may consider one of the five Giants pieces in all the pianistic repertoire. But Uchida surely must have read this famous Faustus' statement: I love whose who pretend the impossible!
My best wishes for Mrs. Uchida who may be considered from now a piano legend.

One of the best of the Masterworks series.......2007-07-06
You're unlikely to throw away much of this Schubert collection though. This seems to be the finest of the Masterworks sets, with a succession of solid, often first-rate performances of most of the major Schubert works. Here's what you get:
- The symphonies, performed by The Hanover Band in a historically-informed style. Very interesting performances perhaps marred by an odd recording balance that makes the woodwinds sound distant. Takes up four CDs
- The six Latin masses. Also the Deutsche Messe in the version with wind instruments. Five CDs in all
- Edison Denisov's completion of Schubert's unfinished dramatic work Lazarus (2 CDs, Helmuth Rilling's premier recording)
- The last four string quartets (including the Quartettsatz) with #9 thrown in. Also the octet, piano quintet ("The Trout"), string quintet and both piano trios. In short all the canonical chamber works. Performances are strong, and well recorded
- Two CDs of violin/piano duets, including Op. 137 and Op. 162
- 19 of the 21 "canonical" piano sonatas (missing #7 and #12) as well as the Moments Musicaux, Impromptus, German Dances, Wanderer Fantasy and several other piano works, 11 CDs in all. As with the chamber music, the performances and recordings are strong, often stunning
- Two CDs of piano duets, including the Divertissements and D. 617
- Song cycles: Die Schöne Müllerin, Winterreise, Schwanengesang, and four CDs of standalone songs, including such "standards" as Erlkönig and Gretchen am Spinnrade. The singers are a bit uneven here, ranging from standouts Robert Holl, Deitrich Fischer-Dieskau and John Shirley-Quirk to the somewhat shrill Arleen Augér
Missing from the collection is Rosamunde, and a number of famous songs: Die Forelle (The Trout), Death and the Maiden, Ellens Gesang III (the so-called Ave Maria, D. 839), Der Hirt auf dem Felsen and Der Wanderer. But you do have almost all the important instrumental works, and most of the vocal works generally considered to be essential, with some padding added in the form of minor works such as the parochial Deutsche Messe, the German Dances, and the modernist-informed completion of Lazarus by the 20th Century Russian composer Denisov.
As with the other Masterworks sets, there are no program notes. You'll need to do your own research. Answers.com is a good starting point for Schubert compositions. There are also no song texts or translations provided, so again you'll need to track down your own. Try "The Lied and Art Song Texts Page" for lieder lyrics and translations. Hunt down a good price on this collection, browsing one of Amazon's European sites if necessary, and treat yourself to many hours of lovely music for the cost of a modest night out.

glorious music in magisterial performances.......2006-02-03
The virtues that are unique to Pollini: supreme technical facility, fastidious attention to form (shape and coherence of piece as a whole), scrupulous study of various editions of score, concert performances years in advance of recording- all come into play in these renditions of Schubert's glorious and darkly complex music.
Highest recommendation.
Immaculate, Beautiful Performances.......2005-10-14
A brief comparison with other interpretations of these sonatas. Brendel, Perahia and Pollini are all quite similar in that they take a lean, spare and unembellished approach to the D. 960, as opposed to Kempff, Richter and Uchida, who bring out the sonata's more spacious and sonorous qualities and make so much of the silences between the sonata's many mood changes. For a while I was completely smitten with Uchida's recording, but lately I've gone cold on it. It has the tendency to wax a little too poetic and to be somewhat self-conscious. I have the impression that Uchida feels burdened by the effort to make every note and every passage ring with profundity; eventually the first two movements collapse under the accumulated weight she heaps upon them. Richter to my mind is even more culpable in this respect (his first movement clocks in at about 26 minutes if my memory serves, while Uchida comes in at about 23 and change. Perahia, Pollini and Kempff manage it in about 18-20, while Brendel foregoes the repeat and his first movement is about 12-13 minutes long). Brendel does a magnificent job with the D. 960, but I've come to appreciate the first movement repeat that almost everyone else who records this sonata observes. Pollini therefore supplants him here, but what really stands out is the emphasis Pollini gives to what Schubert was doing with the bass clef. The recording really brings out the left hand complexities of the composition (beyond the foreboding trills) in the first and second movements, while the clean purity of his playing gives the second movement all the transcendent, dreamy qualities that are so abundant in the Kempff recording, albeit in a different manner. As for the third and fourth movements, Pollini's control is just a wonder. It's always eay to overlook these movements because of the overwhelming nature of the first two, but Pollini made me sit up and pay attention in a way I never have with the other interpretations. Perahia is excellent too, but strangely enough (since Pollini is often the one accused of remoteness and over-objectivity), there seems to be something absent from Perahia's recording of a piece that seems to rest on its many emotional intangibles. It's fine--flawless actually--in respect to its architecture and pacing, but there seems to be nothing remarkable about it regarding the emotions it evokes. So here Pollini and Kempff take the honors.
Pollini is also magnificent with the D. 959. Pollini goes here for a lean, mean, stripped-down-to-essentials Schubert, taking a Beethovenian approach that successfully highlights the many dramatic contrasts without any over-exaggeration or over-emphasis. To my mind no one surpasses Brendel's perfectly modulated and more measured interpretation; suffice to say though that Pollini is a clear and close second, and that many might prefer his approach to that of Brendel. I like both and will always own both. Although excellent and flawlessly executed, Perahia takes this tricky sonata just a little too briskly for my taste; Kempff takes it a little too easily and there's too much of a drop off in the level of tension that threads its way through the first two movements; and Uchida makes a complete hash of the slow movement.
If Brendel is the D. 959 sine non qua, he has for me always sounded a tad too brittle in bringing off D. 958, and here both Perahia and Pollini are more successful. The Perahia recording is more thick-textured than that of Pollini, and again I just have to go with the fact that Pollini manages the diffcult task of coupling absolute technical perfection with a deep understanding of these sonatas' other-worldly, emotionally ambiguous qualities.
There's definitely some Pollini out there that I am not fond of; his interpretations of early and middle-period Beethoven and the Diabelli Variations immediately come to mind. Anything from the '70s and '80s is golden though, and taken overall, this is the best 2-CD set of Schubert's late sonatas out there (it also includes the Allegretto and the late Klavierstucke). It will bring endless satisfactions and joys.
