It was Giulio Caccini in 1601 who encouraged the use of the solo voice accompanied by a harmony instrument as a means of expressing the "passion" of the text. Then around the same time Ludovico Grossi suggested using one or more voices underpinned by and accompaniment for basso continuo only, or continuo together with violins and wind instruments such as the trombone and cornett. The programme of this CD incorporates both of these concepts which makes it an interesting listening treat. The programme of this CD presents a reconstruction of a vesper service with solo voice for the feast of St. John the Baptist. Now let's mention the marvelous solo voice on this disc: Carlos Mena. The voice has a wonderfully deep sound; clear and resonant. It's definately alto because that's where it sounds the best. The contributing composers are: Bovicelli,Tarditi, Banchieri, Cozzolani,Frescobaldi, Marini, Legranzi, Merula and Falconieri. The accompanying instrumentalists are skillful and play with much energy; and when you add to it the passionate sound of Mena it makes for a great recording.

Rare Works.......2004-04-21

Alto Carlos Mena and La Fenice, a period-instrument ensemble directed by Jean Tubery, perform a "solo" vespers for the feast of St John the Baptist. This kind of music for one or two voices accompanied by two treble instruments was composed for use by smaller religious establishments on important feast days. Jean Tubery has reconstructed this vespers using psalm settings from different composers.
