5 out of 5 stars pristine.......2007-03-04

I Musici is rivaled perhaps only by the Academy of St Martin in the Fields when it comes to predictably crystalline performances of the Baroque masters. When I Musici, Felix Ayo, Heinz Holliger, and Maurice Bourge turn to Albinoni's concerto repertoire, the outcome is never in doubt.

Let me clarify that these comments do not in any way suggest that this Philips two-disk set is 'standard' in any pedantic way. Emphatically, it is not.

Rather, the artists team with Philips' Duo Series to render access to a masterful rendering of one of Early Baroque's unsung great ones affordable to the masses, of which this reviewer is a card-carrying member.

One can only say 'Bravo!'.

4 out of 5 stars outstanding oboe concerti.......2007-01-25

This is a re-issue of recordings made in the mid 1960s, so they are 40 years old; however the sound, while not as good as one can expect from a current CD, is quite good. Albiboni's Opus 9 is a set of 12 concertos, 4 for violin, four for oboe and four for two oboes with orchestra. They are in 5 parts, and rather simple when compared with Bach, for example. They are not written for virtuoso soloists, rather for oboe with orchestra. In my opinion the violin concertos, while pleasant enough, do not compare with those of his contempories, such as vivaldi and Bach. However the oboe concertos are outstanding, and while I could nominate the odd baroque 0boe concerto that is as good or better, the set of six stand alone.
The 12 concertos are played by I Musici, a long established modern instrument group that specialises in music of this period, the violin solo is by Felix Ayo, their first violin, and the oboes are played my the great Heinz Hollinger and Maurice Bourgue. So I can find little to criticise with the performance, I Musici and Hollinger were/are world class. Deciding on a rating was not easy, but taking the recording of Opus 9 as a whole I gave it 4 and feel a little mean, the 6 oboe concertos alone would get 5.

5 out of 5 stars best Albinoni ever.......2007-01-10

Tomaso Albinoni is best known for his Adagio, that is actually an arrangement by Giazzoto. His real masterpieces are the Concertos Opus 9(recorded here by I Musici). The sound of this recording is very good considering its age (mid 1950s and 1960s). The Concerto Op. 9/2 is the most beautiful oboe concerto ever composed. Heinz Holliger is explendid as soloist. If you like baroque music played in a old-fashioned way (rather romantic), it's for you. If you like baroque music played accordind "authentic baroque techniques it's not for you.

5 out of 5 stars I Musici di Roma, Stradivarius, and Italian Baroque Is Divine Perfection.......2005-10-09

I wish to start my review by warning Amazon shoppers about two previous and seemingly 'knowledgeable' reviews commenting on I Musici's qualifications for playing Baroque and not playing on traditional instruments as a discouragement in buying their performances as they are somewhat slanderous. Their comments actually make me laugh and question their range of listening experience in traditional Baroque techniques and instruments or knowledge of anything dealing with classical music at all since I Musici has not only been the most acclaimed Baroque ensemble in Italy and the entire world for over 50 years praised by legends such as Toscanini for being 'The best chamber orchestra in the world', the main reason its musicians and strings outmatch every other traditional Baroque group in the world is precisely because they masterfully perform on the most prized of all period string instruments in existence! String instruments that most professional violinists, cellists, etc., can only dream of ever playing in their lifetimes! A string instrument that only the most competent of players can master to bring out its fluid range and sound! I Musici performs all of their pieces almost exclusively on Stradivarius string instruments! Although other traditional ensembles do use traditional period instruments, few if any of them play on Stradivari, and if they do it will probably be just the lead violin as Stradivari are simply too rare to be played in unison by most professional groups. A Stradivarius is an instrument in and of itself and other traditional string instruments don't even come close to sounding like one. A Stradivarius is nothing less than divine in its sound as one can hear with I Musici as they play plenty of them. And so although I can understand the aesthetics of such listeners/reviewers for other performers, please, don't tell others that I Musici isn't playing authentic instruments when you can't even recognize a Stradivarius playing in your ear! You are simply embarassing yourselves. Or, for that matter, don't say that they can't competently play 'traditional' Italian Baroque when they're the best group from Italy, comprised of experts in the Italian Baroque and Romantic traditions, virtuously playing on many Stradivari, and have been acclaimed as one of the best Italian Baroque groups in the world by reknown classical experts and laypersons alike for over five decades! As for this recording and others in general, some reviewers have also complained that I Musici's somewhat more romantic interpretations of Baroque don't work with Albinoni's music such as his Adagio and so are not 'traditional' enough in comparison to other performances. Traditional interpretation of Albinoni's 'Adagio' would be absurd since Albinoni's original 'Adagio' is a horribly deficient piece of which there are no real performances that I can think of as a result. What is ironic then is that this model of Albinoni's 'traditionalism' such reviewers are referring to can only be Remo Giazotto's popular 19th Century Romantic revision of the 'Adagio' being presently used as the standard of every single Baroque or Romantic period performance available on the market today.

I have heard various renditions of Albinoni's Concertos, Op. 9 and, besides a few other performances by Baroque groups, I have not heard many that even compare to I Musici in performing Albinoni or Italian Baroque generally. Don't be deceived into buying other performances even if they are by great conductors and symphonies such as Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic or Solti and the Chicago/London Symphonies. And Karajan's orchestral rendition is indeed a very moving one but orchestral ensembles are generally too large for chamber pieces and most of the instruments used are modern which changes many important aspects of the piece. They are also recorded in too large of spaces so the performances sound like Beethoven's 9th instead of a chamber piece. There are other groups and recordings that are more faithful to Baroque techniques and traditional interpretations such as those directed by Hogwood but they have various problems as well. Individual violinists such as Manze mentioned by the previous reviewer tend to be overly rigid and lifeless in their interpretations as they are more founded in musicological disciplines on ancient instruments and techniques as opposed to professional performance. This can be problematic especially with interpreting Italian Baroque which is always more freely expressive in mood than German Baroque. This results in clumsy and lifeless performances where each musician painfully over-accentuates the proper techniques throughout the entire piece so that it comes out sounding as a tedious cacophony instead of a symphony. Like Jack says in the 'Witches of Eastwick' to Susan Sarandon playing her cello, "You kill the passion!" by such emphasis. Hogwood's musical background is also founded more in the German Baroque tradition of Bach and Handel and not Italian Baroque and so turns the piece into more of a mechanical movementby Bach from his direction on the harpsichord which is always the meter in all Italian concerti. I Musici is comprised of some of the finest classical musicians alive today who emphasize more on a passionate Italian Romantic interpretation in their performances instead of a rigid Baroque one and the results are most delightful to the ears. That perhaps is the only flaw in its interpretation of the often over-methodical Italian Baroque style for the concerti grossi. Although I Musici usually tends to again use a more fluid Italian Romantic style rather than a strict Baroque one, their shortcomings in that field are hardly a defect in their performances or this recording: on the contrary, they enhance them! These slight shortcomings are more than compensated for by I Musici performing with some of the best classical musicians exclusively on original Stradivarius string instruments. Such groups also tend to use traditional stringing and playing techniques that limit the range of the instrument which is not always what the composer desired such as Mozart and Beethoven who were forced to accept the limited range and tonality of the piano forte in performing their compositions but who actually composed them with a yet non-existant Steinway in mind. I Musici in a sense compliments such limitations with some Romantic techniques in the style of Paganini but following the Baroque concerti grossi tradition with period instruments and in remaining within the size of a small Baroque chamber orchestra. Also, the musical cohesion and caliber of the performers in I Musici is such that they do not use an overt conductor even at the harpsichord: they therefore have no need of one such as Hogwood to lead them and the performances have less hesitations as a result. Lastly, I Musici di Roma is also known for having some of the best sound engineering and mixing for its recordings than any other chamber group and this also applies to the earliest recordings. The recording quality for their performances is so rich and clear for each instrument being played that you actually feel as if you are at a live performance each time you hear them.

I Musici di Roma is unequivocally one of the best, if not the best, performing groups for Baroque music and you won't go wrong buying any of their performances no matter whether the composers are from the Italian or German Baroque period. I certainly haven't heard any single group or orchestra even come close to matching their 1982 performance of Vivaldi's Four Seasons with Pina Carmirelli. This particular recording with Garatti and Ayo is probably not with one of the best violinists to have performed Italian Baroque with them such as Carmirelli or Acardo but it is accompanied with some of the best musicians in their class such Hollinger. It is a great buy!

2 out of 5 stars Not very "Baroque" and not my taste.......2001-06-28

This may be good for some people but I really didn't like it:

I thought it was not played in the Baroque style. I personally hate vibrato and this had a lot of it. It made it the slow movements very annoying for me to listen to. I admit I might be a little obsessed but vibrato really ruins a performance for me.

It was played with "heavy fingers" especially on the violins. This was a very "romantic" interpertaion for me.

A much better performance in my opinion is one directed by Hogwood and performed by Manze (Uni/Decca - #458129) which was performed on "authentic" instruments.

4 out of 5 stars light and subtle.......2005-03-25

I love Holliger's playing. Although an advocate of period instruments and Baroque orchestras, and a gambist, harpsichordist, and recorder player myself, Holliger's recordings are wonderful and I recommend this disc and his recording "3 Oboe Concertos" of Bach very highly.

He plays with a good, flexible tone and plenty of nuance. The orchestra sounds great. I only gave the disc 4 instead of 5 starts because not all the rep is exceptional. but there are some good works on here, and I believe an oboe d'amore concerto which is lovely.

4 out of 5 stars Mad about Marcello.......2004-11-12

Bought this one for the "disturbingly modern" sounds of Marcello's Oboe Concerto in D, but the rest of it is a great deal of fun, too. Get this disc to prove to yourself that the oboe is one of the more expressive instruments in the orchestra's repertoire, and that it laughs and cries along with you as it takes you along on its magical journey.

5 out of 5 stars The Instrument That Sings.......2003-01-29

Here is the consummate oboeist, Holliger, playing the richness of late Baroque concerto for oboe.

Holliger aptly serves these compositions with his senitive phrasing and tone. Backed ably by unidentified strings and continuo, the selections from Marcello, Sammartini, Albiononi, Lotti and Cimarosa are marvelous.

This is monumental collection and performance of oboe concertos of this period. Especially fond of Allegro from Albinoni's Concerto in G minor and Affettuoso from Lotti's Cocerto in A.

One of the best compilations of Vivaldi I have heard. To the best of my knowledge, this disc is not available in my country

5 out of 5 stars The best of Vivaldi.......2003-09-21

This is an outstanding recording. Once you hear it you'll wish you'd learned of it years earlier. "The Four Seasons" will bore you after you'd enjoyed this utterly delightful recording. Vivaldi reached his peak of skill in these mandolin concertos and the performance and technical recording are superb. I ordered 10 copies to give to my best friends, to share the pleasure....

My last girlfriend like this. Anyway,I love this music,Vivaldi's mandolin concerto. Indeed,I know another recording more better, but I like this recording its clearly reemarging Vivaldi's passion. Thanks anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Scimone's Mandolins the best.......2001-01-09

I'll spare you longwinded discussion and cut to the chase.

This is quite simply the most delightful recording of these concertos I have ever encountered in 30+ years of listening to and collecting recorded music.

I am glad to see it is still in Erato's active catalog.

5 out of 5 stars The Vivaldi Mandolin Concerti.......2000-05-03

I first listened to the I Solisti Veneti ensemble playing Vivaldi, conducted by Claudio Scimone, about 15 years ago, and this particular recording has during that time remained one of my favorites of all music.

The violin concerto discordato with the lovely passacaglia is beyond description. The second movement played duo coro with violin and cello is unforgettable.

No Vivaldi collection is complete without this recording.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful recording.......2002-02-21

If you like Albinoni, I think you will love this CD. I have most of his concertos, and this is right up there with his best. I have to disagree with the reviewer who complained about the quality. I may not be an expert, but I really have never noticed any flaws in the quality here. I think the sound is great, and of course the music is beautiful. If you've only heard snippets of Albinoni on the radio and enjoyed them, I would really recommend getting this and his other concerto collections. To me they are the most pleasant baroque music ever made.

2 out of 5 stars Very muddled recording.......2001-05-03

I found this recording to be very muddled. The location (I do not have the CD at hand) added so much reverberation that it was hard to even pick out the soloist at times. Perhaps they should have done this recording in a studio to get better acoustics. As An example of what I would prefer is the Opus 9 by I Musici on the Phillips label

Vivaldi's The Four Seasons is actually part of a larger group of works, the Twelve Violin Concertos, op. 8. This set, in turn, has an additional subtitle: "The Contest Between Invention and Harmony"; not that anyone is quite sure what this means. Aside from The Four Seasons there are several other works with subtitles, including "Storm at Sea," "The Hunt" and "Rapture." It's only natural that when you've composed some 600 concertos for various instruments, the ones with the catchy names will become the most popular. But the others are no less fine, and if your interest in Vivaldi goes beyond the "Big Four," then you might want to check out this excellent set. --David Hurwitz

    5 out of 5 stars classic performances.......2007-07-10

"The Four Seasons" naturally tend to overshadow the other eight concertos of Vivaldi's op. 8, of which Spring, Summer, Autumn, & Winter are merely a part. That these four concertos form a suite of their own adds to the relative neglect of the other concertos; but, the other eight concertos are full of great music, even if they aren't as brilliantly conceived as their famous relatives. But what other music did Vivaldi write that can live up to the reputation of "The Four Seasons"?

For several decades beginning in the 1950's I Musici was the leading ensemble specializing in Italian Baroque music, & these performances were standard-setting in their time. They still hold up exceptionally well even though approaches to early music, driven by the period instrument revolution, have changed somewhat since then.

Perhaps the simplest way to define the differences between I Musici & more contemporary ensembles is that I Musici's approach, while spirited & completely authentic, is also refined & elegant without being extravagent, whereas more modern groups often sound scaled down & a little more earthy. Both definitely have their merits, although I find myself attracted more to I Musici's grandeur & sweep.

The stereo sound here is acceptable. The first four concerti ("The Four Seasons") date from 1959 & appear to have been recorded in a bigger hall than the other eight, which were recorded in 1961.

If you are looking for a classic set of op. 8, then I Musici is the way to go. If you looking only for "The Four Seasons," expand your horizons & buy this set.

3 out of 5 stars Pina Carmirelli's Is The Best By I Musici If Not The Best Period.......2005-10-20

Although I Musici is certainly one of the best chamber groups in the world for Baroque music if not the best as claimed by Toscanini, there is also a standard of excellence for the violin soloists in I Musici itself over the past 50 years and Felix Ayo is simply not a top contender. Ayo is decent for the concerti but the crucial 'Four Seasons' is very average by the standards of I Musici itself. Although I find Ayo's interpretation better than Michelucci's with I Musici, this performance of 'The Four Seasons' itself is not I Musici's best for this piece by a long shot. I have not heard one rendition anywhere whether chamber or symphonic that even compares to the absolutely brilliant 1982 performance by I Musici and Pina Carmirelli. It is truly the clearest and most passionate performance available to date. Carmirelli's proficiency for this piece completely surpasses Ayo's rather safe and monotone interpretation. Michelucci's is even worse. With a steady but constant pace, Carmirelli swings the bow and soars the scales with impeccable clarity and proficiency: there is simply not one hesitation or moment of faltering in transitions. It is simply a breathtakingly divine performance that surpasses Ayo's rather cautious performance.

For those who are debating other options, don't be deceived into buying other performances even if they have skilled violinists such as Perlman or Zuckerman. The latter are specialized in the German Romantic and Klezmer traditions of violin and so tend to perform better with Northern European composers from the Romantic period such as Brahms or Wienawski but not with Italian ones generally and Italian Baroque violin pieces least of all! As for performances by great conductors and symphonies such as Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic or Solti and the Chicago/London Symphonies, the orchestral ensembles they use are generally too large for chamber pieces and most of the instruments used are modern. They are also recorded in too large of spaces so the performances sound like Beethoven's 9th instead of a chamber lyrical piece. There are other groups and recordings that are more faithful to Baroque techniques and traditional interpretations but their performances tend to suffer in their lyrical aspects and recording quality. The artists in such chamber groups generally come from academic backgrounds in traditional techniques and instruments instead of professional circles and so are more focused on applying the techniques instead of evoking from them the lyrical mood required by the piece. This results in clumsy and lifeless performances where each musician is so painfully struggling to apply the correct technique to their individual instrument that the entire piece comes out sounding as a cacophony instead of a symphony. Vivaldi was an innovative and demanding composer and this piece is one of the most difficult pieces to perform in the repertoire of music for the solo violin. I Musici have been world acclaimed leaders in performing Italian Baroque for over 50 years and have performed with many of the best musicians in this field. They emphasize more on a passionate Italian Romantic interpretation in its performances instead of a rigid Baroque one but reach a good balance with tradition by performing in the Italian style almost exclusively on Stradivarius instruments and within the size of a small Baroque chamber orchestra. The Stradivarius is the gem of traditional string instruments and really an instrument in and of itself that no other period instrument can even compare to. There are also really no chamber groups in existence that perform on so many Stradivari at once as they are simply too rare and even many professionals simply lack sufficient talent to play one proficiently.

Ayo's performance is not the worst in terms of I Musici but it is definitely not the best the group ever performed. He actually does quite well in the remaining concerti. It is simply not a good performance of 'The Four Seasons' which is the most technically demanding and where Ayo starts to slip. It is still better than most of those by your typical chamber groups out there however. The best for I Musici if not across the board is its 1982 performance with Pina Carmirelli. Carmirelli's performance is extremely hard to find these days and sometimes ridiculously expensive so a close match by a comparable Italian chamber group is Salvatore Acardo's Stradivarius performance with I Solisti delle Settimane Musicali di Napoli which is available in abundance here on Amazon. Accardo himself had already played several times with I Musici before making his legendary performance with Il Solisti and had cultivated his talent to mastery. That peformance is the only close contender I can think of that comes even close to Carmirelli's passionate and legendary performance. Unless you are interested purely in symphonic interpretations, I would stick to either Carmirelli's performance or Accardo's as an alternative because the quality of their performances is exponentially superior to everyone elses' without question.

    4 out of 5 stars I-Musici + Vivaldi; wow!.......2000-07-17

4 out of 5 stars okay Four Seasons, the other concerti are not as good..........2000-06-01

An overall great recording, but the Four Seasons here could be a little more energetic, but that is a matter of taste. This recording sounds just a little too slow. The other concertos are not nearly as satisfying as the big four, but the ones in minor keys are pretty good. I usually listen to the Four Seasons on other recordings and come to these CD's for No.6, No.7, No.8, and No. 10, the rest not being as interesting in my humble opinion. Of course, virtuosity and showmanship permeate all of these violin concertos. The recordings were made in 1959 and 1961, but the sound quality is relatively excellent, with great balance between solo violin, harpsichord, and orchestra. The liner notes are informative and sincerely point out that not all of Vivaldi's concertos are of equal interest, with a few hints as to which ones are considered outstanding. Whatever you do, please consider a period instrument recording of the Four Seasons too so that you hear the real Baroque sound as well as more modern interpretations, both approaches are beautiful, thanks to Vivaldi's creativity.

5 out of 5 stars Good record in ecomonic price.......2007-07-19

This CD is 2 CDs in one price, however, that's not good enought that I recommand it, the more important is that Manze had gotten good appreciation when individual record released, so we could listen his beautiful music with lower price.
As to the list of these collection, the major composer isn't shown of Castello, but Schmelzer, you could view its comments from other reviewers. I would add more coment from comparied with Manze and Holloway. The former is good of violin technique and fluent; the latter is that put more expressive with emotion on it. They all works perfect, not esay to compare. If you ever liked or listen one of them, I recommand you try both of.

    5 out of 5 stars Flawless Musicianship!.......2007-05-25

Some have categorized this recording as "romantic," but those of us who are a bit older will remember when I Musici represented an informed approach to Baroque music. If your taste runs to the more asthmatic sounds of period instruments, you might find this recording a bit too ripe, but I'd characterize it more as robust and lush. The bottom line is that this ensemble's musicianship is impeccable, the playing vibrant and joyful, and the sound is luscious. I can enjoy an "original instrument" performance as well, but I'd hate to give up the kind of gorgeous music-making this ensemble invariably delivers. It's far and away my favorite Corelli recording. (By the way, when will Amazon's data-entry people learn how to recognize who the composer is on a recording? Enzo Altobelli is merely the cellist in the concertino group.)

4 out of 5 stars Accomplished, but not my style.......2006-01-08

Whoever said these performances are far from the period-instrument performances commonly heard today was exactly right--and I have to admit I found this recording old-fashioned. It's not just that the tempi are slower than we're accustomed to (or have become accustomed to); the sluggish pace and interpretation make Corelli seem un-baroque, and that just doesn't sound right. It's also a touch too sentimental. I think of Corelli as a brilliant light from a very different age, and this performance makes him sound like a not-yet-Vivaldi.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, slightly Romanticized Corelli with a large chamber orchestra.......2005-11-24

I classify this is beautiful, slightly Romanticized Corelli Concerti grossi with a large chamber orchestra. The Swiss/Italian ensemble I Musici (without conductor) plays very well in these late 1960s recordings of Corelli's most famous, most often recorded works. Sometimes their allegro movement tempos are a little slower than we are used to hearing today: compare Pinnock/English Concert, in their 1988 recording, but they are well recorded and well played.

I especially like the rich full string sound in slower movements. I Musici's players take their time to make points, and have near perfect ensemble. This is how I imagine Bruno Walter (1876-1962) would conduct Corelli's Opus 6, had he recorded this music late in his career: it is rich, warm, and far from the period instrument recordings being made over the past 15 years. (There is a 1930s recording of Walter conducting the "Christmas" Concerto grosso, No. 8 in G minor, on Dutton).

My favorite Concertos in this collection are No. 4 in D Major, and the "Christmas" Concerto, No. 8 in g minor. Not all are as memorable as these, but they have great tunes which will move you. I also like Trevor Pinnock/English Concert, for period instrument Corelli Op. 6 (DG Archiv) and Adrian Shepherd/Cantilena (Chandos) for a modern chamber orchestra, but I really like this, too. I Musici does the job very well: highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended.......2002-12-16

This recording of the fabulous grand concertos by Corelli is one of the best recordings that I own. These concertos should not be taken for granted; they set a precedent for the Concerti grossi by Handel, Geminiani, and many others.

I Musici employs their impeccable technique, tone, articulation, and dynamics in this recordings. Philips held up their part of the deal; the sound quality on the recording is unbelievable. No other recording that I own is as crisp and clean as this recording is. A must buy for fans of baroque music.

5 out of 5 stars Another great I Musici recording!.......2002-02-15

This is a great recording of Corelli's Op. 6. I Musici as usual shines. There are other versions available (that are more expensive, too), but this one is the best one out there. The sound is crisp, the playing fluid and lively, and the overall sound quality nice and clear.

Corelli is one of the big names in Baroque music, so he shouldn't be overlooked. If you're serious about building up your Baroque library, then you should consider including this recording in your collection. I own a number of discs featuring the talents of I Musici, and this 2-disc set ranks right up there with their finest recordings.
