Here's another to join the parade of page-to-stage musicals inspired by 19th-century fiction. This ambitious adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's haunting classic Jane Eyre for the musical theater seems to be part of a trend represented most famously by Les Misérables. It also reflects the increasing pressure to schedule an original cast recording release as close as possible to a new show's Broadway opening: in this case, in fact, the CD was both recorded and released prior to the show's opening in December 2000 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. But what's most significant for the artistic character of Jane Eyre: The Musical is found in yet another pattern: like a number of his colleagues, composer-lyricist Paul Gordon comes to the project from a pop music industry background (best known for his hit "Friends and Lovers"). And quite a few of the show's numbers benefit from Gordon's catchy craftwork, weaving melodies that are clearly destined to be whistled long past curtain. Yet the effect is sometimes too facile, not diving as deep as we would like into the emotional predicaments of Brontë's characters. You begin to crave a more deftly defined and imagined variety of sound worlds (especially for the darker aspects of Thornfield Hall) than what is hinted at. Gordon doesn't forge any new paths, but his melodic fluency does have its moments of payoff--especially in the moving final duet "Brave Enough for Love," which is also strong enough to stand on its own.

Gordon's predilections as a would-be son of Sondheim are nevertheless clear, and he's telescoped the story into mostly effective lyrics, with some thoughtful juxtapositions of material. Most importantly, he understands that this is more than a Gothic romance, foregrounding the central message of forgiveness that Jane learns as a girl. He attempts to explore the injured sense of self shared by both Jane and Rochester and sets them on a painful, mutual voyage of discovery.

The creative team also includes the veteran duo John Caird (book and direction) and John Napier (scenic design), who have collaborated on such epics as Les Mis and Nicholas Nickleby (not to mention the Las Vegas Siegfried and Roy extravaganza). And the show's creators seem to share a vision geared toward the more operatic end of the spectrum (it was opera composers, after all, who early on claimed 19th-century Gothic fiction for the stage, as in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor), with an actual parody of coloratura in one showstopper ("The Finer Things") given to Blanche Ingram. Fortunately, the two principals have large, richly expressive voices to encompass the large, complicated emotions of these characters. Marla Schaffel singswith unusual beauty and brings dimension to her Jane, while James Barbour (whose resumé includes Beauty and the Beast) is never really threatening as Rochester, but rather a tortured soul who is sweet-voiced even at his most cynical. Mary Stout is a stitch as the blustery Mrs. Fairfax. While the show has already undergone a lengthy evolution from its very first workshops, the viability of its final, fully staged realization has yet to be determined. But this cast recording conveys an authentic sense of the musical's atmosphere and emotional scope. --Thomas May

5 out of 5 stars Great Buy!.......2007-06-08

Not only was this CD super cheap, it also arrived at my house 3 days later!

4 out of 5 stars Perfect Match.......2007-03-16

The music in this album really gave me the feeling of reading the book. I think the songs were well chosen and well written, except of course for the songs sung by Mrs. Fairfax... I could have done without those. Jane and Mr. Rochester's songs carry the story well and they sound lovely. For any musical lover, or romance fan I definitely recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the most beautiful musical of all time.......2007-02-16

This is a hidden gem and if you buy it and listen to it, I don't see how you can not love it. I have bought many, many Broadway cast albums but I still am a popster at heart. With all that said, this is a cast album that soars above the crowd.

I bought this several years ago and have listened to it repeatedly since I got it. Why do I love it so much? First of all, the lyrics are full of heart and emotion and tell the story ably. But it is the music and the performances that are truly remarkable here. The melodies are memorable and absolutely exquisite. The orchestration is lush but not sappy. The performances by the two leads are nothing less than stunning.

I never get bored with this wonderful cast album and it is very, very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2007-01-28

I listen to this soundtrack all the time and I never get tired of the songs. If Charlotte Bronte story was written as a musical, then this would definitely be it.

4 out of 5 stars A good musical.......2006-07-20

if you like old-fashioned romantic stuff, this one's for you. Some songs are very inspired, the music is,for the most part, quite beautiful, and the story line keeps the essence of the Bronte novel. I heard this right after "Wuthering Heights: the musical", which is quite good, yet this is superior. Give it a try and you might be nicely surprised. I would highly recommend it to the ones who know the novel and to English Literature students: it offers a different and interesting approach to the novel.

5 out of 5 stars The funniest Schickele piece ever!.......2006-05-23

My experience with the 1712 Overture is similar to Victoria's (in another review). I was listening to the car radio when I heard the dissonant pile-up halfway through, and almost drove off the Interstate.

It should be noted that the Amazon listing is incorrect. The 1712 Overture is in reality conducted by "Walter Bruno" who is actually David Zinman. It is most assuredly not conducted by Bruno Walter (can you imagine that?), who died in 1962.

Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars P D Q on form again.......2005-07-20

P D Q has quite a cult following among the 'cognoscenti', and others may know some of his works without being aware of it or why. Much of this is fun listening if you have that kind of mind &/or background, and has the virtual ring of period authenticity.
Classical music, like any living corpus of cultural tradition (eg religion, sport & politics) should be well capable of laughing at itself. Others have done so successfully (Hoffnung, Spike Jones, the Comedy Harmonists et al.) and PDQ follows in a worthy & rollicking tradition!

5 out of 5 stars beware of the organ cadenza!.......2005-05-18

This is my favourite PDQ Bach collection. The 1712 Overture alone is worth the price of admission. The use of the motif from 'I Ain't Got No Home' is inspired and the skewering of 'Day Tripper' reduces me to helpless giggles every time.

Einstein on the Fritz is a tonic to anyone sick of the pretentious meanderings of Philip Glass, Taverner et al. And Cappricio La Poucelle de New Orleans (engineered by Burt Bach, a living direct decendant of JS Bach) is frighteningly intense, as well as hysterical. These musicians are also terrific - the pieces wouldn't work at all otherwise. And who couldn't love the rapturous intro to The Preachers of Crimetheous - featuring the most incredible percussion playing since Ginger Baker's 'Toad'.

All in all, this is a completely ridiculous delight!

4 out of 5 stars Another assault to your funny bone!.......2004-04-12

P Schickele does it yet again! He successfullly skewers the classics again. My personal fave is Einstein On The Fritz, where he does a wonderful job of spoofing Philip Glass.....Only the Prof. is so twisted as to be able to sneak in 'Three Blind Mice" in the middle of a Glassian composition!

4 out of 5 stars PDQ Bach at his best (worst).......2001-11-13

Mr. Schickele is a genius, he's taken music history and disgraced it, apocryphally!
the 1712 overture pokes fun at just about every type of music out there, and what the 1712 doesn't defile, the rest of the tracks on this CD pick up the slack.

This incredibly irreverent album is a must for music lovers everywhere!

Get yourself a copy! You won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Marvellous!!A delicious recording!!!.......2004-10-01

O`Dette! The lutanist that would become popular in Dowlands time! he seems to me like a Leonhardt on lute.I find the lute no less expressive and enchanting than harpsichord or piano when I listen to Mr O`Dette

5 out of 5 stars Rock guitarist turned lutanist.......2002-08-05

I listen to this album over and over and never get tired of it. O'Dette's interpretations keep sounding fresh and alive, perhaps because of his rock background. This was the popular music of the time and he plays it that way. There's no dusty mustiness of age hanging over it.

The compilation of different albums is great; different instrument combinations and vocal pieces interspersed. I highly recommend it.

If you like the complexities of melody and rythm, this recording of Bach using only viols will take you away. Beautifully recorded too. You can hear everything.

5 out of 5 stars Dark, rich clarity. Intricate detail and very listenable!.......2005-12-24

I was somewhat apprehensive about buying this CD because of a previous Fretwork CD entitled "Art of the Fugue". I was not only very happy with this but CD, but very impressed. Instead of using modern instruments, the music is arranged using groups of Viols (instruments that were already long obsolete even by Bach's time). You might think that such a choice of instrumentation might make this CD more austere than rich, but you will be pleasantly suprised. I will concede that the viols grouped in the music here do produce a dark sound, they nonetheless lend a particuliar intricacy (especially in C Minor) that cannot be otherwise heard in Bach's original organ arrangements.

5 out of 5 stars Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops are as American as apple pie.......2000-07-16

For those of us who have enjoyed the irrepressible Maestro Kunzel and the effevescent Cincinnati Pops Orchestra for so many years both live, on Cd and on PBS, this collection of Americana is as good as it gets. Sousa, long revered as America's March King, shines on these discs as the composer of delightful dance tunes and even 'The Presidential Polonaise' a worthy contender with the weighty European prcessional. Its a pity that the President doesn't trot this out for White House functions. The tunes are every bit a Fourth of July celebration. The spoken word piece, 'Casey at the Bat' couldn't have a better narrator than Johnny Bench,a man who knows the score about baseball. So, if you want to have yourself up and marching and dancing and laughing around the house, buy this collection and treat youself to a holiday any day of the year.

Album Description

A champion in a rising generation of Scottish fiddlers, Bonnie is called "the piping fiddler" for her evocative renditions of Highland bagpipe music. Here she returns to her roots in a celebration of the women of Scotland. With ancient Gaelic airs, strathspeys and reels of today's Scotland, performed on Scottish fiddle & viola with Highland bagpipe, uilleann pipes, wire-strung Celtic harp, guitar, cittern, cello, bodhran, snare & bass drum. Praised by the Washington Post who said,""Both a classically-trained violinist and three-time US National Fiddle Champion, Rideout uses these twin disciplines to combine an impeccable sense of intonation, timbre and phrasing with the imagination to spin variations on repeating folk themes...She has used these linked skills to tackle not only the fiddle tradition of Scottish music but the pipe tradition as well...She forgoes the heated flamboyance of popular fiddlers in favor of a cooler, more meditative approach...Rideout brings the elegant severity of chamber music to the repertoire, eschewing frilly embellishments for strong, clean lines."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Richly expressive.......1999-05-01

I can't put this album on and just let it play because there are some tracks on it that I actively dislike. But ones I like are so very good that I nevertheless consider this a five-star CD. Bonnie Rideout is perhaps the leading exponent of the Scottish fiddle tradition these days, with five albums published in the last five years. She does not import ideas from other genres. Yet she succeeds (sometimes) against the biggest challenge in the tradition - she makes it sound fresh.

5 out of 5 stars Rich Celtic Tapestry.......1998-05-28

This CD departs from some of the traditional approaches of reel and jig sets. Tunes blend into one another and instrument voices spiral around central themes - There are many emotions and perspectives on this recording, from the joyous assertions of life's energy to somewhat sad introspection. Bonnie Rideout weaves a collection of simple tunes related to Scottish Women into a very rich tapestry of living music.

4 out of 5 stars The best is wonderful, but there are a few duds.......2006-07-17

No portrait of a singer can satisfy all cmers, so EMI has shrugged its shoulders and tossed a bit of everything into the pot. (Without including any bonus tracks, one should note.) Hampson is without a doubt the successor to Fischer-Dieskau as the world's most famous operatic baritone. His strengths, like F-D's, are in song, especially American song. Seven of the 19 cuts here are American songs, which isn't enough. We don't really need Hampson's rather plodding and earnest Viennese operetta aria, nor his duet, "Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better" with the shrill Kim Criswell (to tell the truth, neither does very well). Two small slivers from Schumann's Dichterlieve cycle seems rather silly, too.

But that leaves a lot that's wonderful--all the American selections, the Rossini and Liszt songs, the aria form Korngold's Die Tote Stadt, and above all Hampson's rollicking, let-'er-rip rendition of Figaro's aria form the Barber of Seville. If this omnium gatherum entices listeners to bu the complete recordings, it will serve a very good purpose.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful Voice, Bad Choices.......2003-11-25

    Short and Sweet.

I love listening to this beautiful baritone's voice, but I really don't like his choice of songs on this album. Beautiful Dreamer is so hackneyed and I can't stand to listen to it (also why I didn't buy the Stephen Foster album). I did like is choice of two classic lieder by Schumann. I would have chosen more lieder for a different album, he does great things with it. The Live recording of Largo al factotum from Barber is distracting with audience claps and poor mics for the recording. You can hear him walking away from the mics (fading in and out). The absolute worst choice is "Anything You Can Do" from Annie Get Your Gun. It sounds nice but I hate this song. The rest of the songs swing from Sappy awful to beautifully sung.

Bottom Line: Inconsistent and Not worth your money. He can do much better

5 out of 5 stars A Great Showcase of Hampson's Voice and Artistry.......2002-02-23

Thomas Hampson is definitely one of the greatest artists on today's musical scene. This CD displays the beauty of Hampson's voice and the intelligence and artistry that he brings to a great variety of musical styles (German, French and Italian Opera; Italian, French and German art song, and American music). Among the highlights are the first selection, the beautiful "Mein Sehnen, mein Wähnen" from DIE TOTE STADT by Korngold, sung with great control and melting pianissimos. The same can be said of the aria from TANNHAUSER. His live "Largo al Factotum" from IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA is just virtuosistic, with effortless high notes (even a cadenza up to high C) and energetic vocal acting. In the art songs he is no less impressive, with total involvement in the style and mood of the songs, being particularly impressive "Oh, quand je dors" by Lizt. The American repertoire is also a delight. Hampson displays all kind of nuances for this repertoire, from the estatic quality of "Beautiful Dreamer" to the humor and bawdiness of "Where Is The Life that Late I Led". In summary, this is a delightful and eclectic souvenir from one of the most charismatic and intelligent singers of our time.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive coverage of Hampson's range in song.......2001-11-01

This EMI disc, "Thomas Hampson, Portrait" is an excellent example of the wide range of this melliflous baritone. From the first German aria, Korngold's "Mein Sehnen, mein Wahnen" one of my personal favourites, to Jerome Kern's "The Last Time I saw Paris" you have great variety of opera, lieder and popular song offering you examples of Hampson's great talent. Buy and enjoy! Jill Whitburn

    5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction.......2004-08-25

This is a great introduction at a very reasonable price to Susan Graham's lovely mezzo voice, with selections from several CDs. Be warned, however - this will only whet your appetite for the full albums (for example, her incredible live performance as Ruggiero in Handel's "Alcina" with Renee Fleming and Natalie Dessay and with William Christie conducting Les Arts Florissants - surely one of the most stupendous opera recordings ever made).

3 out of 5 stars Where is it?.......2007-01-31

I love listening to Lee Morse. Like another reviewer said, her vocals are definitely an acquired taste...to me she sometimes sounds like a 1920s Shakira with a low voice. But her low, tragic voice is POWERFUL. When she sang Moanin' Low, it was so soul-searing. She is such a great singer, though forgotten. So much better than Marion Harris, who I think also sang in a low heartyish (but Lee Morse does not really sound hearty a lot) voice, but for some reason I liked Morse better. I initially got this CD because I LOVED her version of Moanin' Low, but Moanin' Low is NOT on here! Huh? It SHOULD! Moanin' Low is the BEST sample of her singing ever, and it should've been on here. I was all like, " Where is it?" Great recordings, but not up to the level of her rendition of Moanin' Low.

    5 out of 5 stars Forgotten talent........2004-02-08

Although Morse had a less-than-ideal life, she was an extremely musically gifted singer from a musical family and her talents allowed her some limited fame in her lifetime. Singing in the vaudeville shows of the time and later on the radio (her best medium), her wide vocal range (I don't recall hearing a female popular singer sing in chest voice so successfully) and wide range of styles shows she was a versatile and highly talented songstress. She's unique and something of an acquired taste, but if you enjoy music from the 1920s and 1930s, you will find this CD highly enjoyable. I heard a pirated tape years ago entirely by accident and am surprised and pleased that Take Two is making some of her songs available with this excellent recording.

My favorite on this disc is "Side By Side", which features Morse singing while accompanying herself on the guitar. This track not only shows that she was at home in a forerunner what we now know as R&B (Morse's rendition is a kind of mix of blues and folk), but a fair guitar player as well. Another excellent track is one of her biggest hits, "Tain't No Sin" in which her backup band, "The Bluegrass Boys" featuring the talents of the Dorseys and Benny Goodman among others, provides a wonderful and delightfully odd novelty song with a sense of humor as well as a darn good beat.

Some don't like Morse's tendency to occasionally yodel for vocal variety, but I actually like it and chalk it up to a style of yesteryear. I will say that her voice is unusually deep and rich and she has the talent to exploit this to the fullest. "Something In The Night" is a good example of this kind of singing.

I highly recommend getting to know Lee Morse. She was a beautiful and exceptionally talented musician whose style would certainly make wonderful additions to movie soundtracks as well as to historical radio programs that are now somewhat popular as well as merely for pure enjoyment. As CDs of her music are so rarely available (this is the first I've ever seen in print today, though I've seen an LP made years ago entitled "Lee Morse Revisited"), I didn't hesitate.

    5 out of 5 stars She's my yodelling babydoll..........2003-12-01

she's great she's a yodelling jazz singing flapper with a deep sexy voice! I love to sip martinis and listen to Miss Morse all afternoon... This cd is also great for when I throw my famous cocktail parties, at my retro 1920's Californai bungalow. I love listening to this cd, with a bottle of brandy in my hand (...) while lounging gayly on my 1940's retro loveseat. This cd's great, just listen how Lee sings If I Could Be With You(she sings it so perfectly), and Cooking Breakfast, that's a classic track, she trows in yodels all over the place and the gal really swings, and so does her band, she's got Tommy Dorsey, Jimmy Dorsey, Eddie Lang, Joe Venuti, bunny Barigan, and a load of other who's who of the kate 20's backin' her up, this cd will surely liven up your next cocktail party... it's a real kilelr diller baby...

5 out of 5 stars You either love her or hate her..........2001-05-01

Lee Morse is virtually forgotten today, however in her time(1920's), she was extremely populer, although some wonder why. She was competing with the pop star Ruth Etting, and the extremely jazz oreinted Annette Hanshaw, who also were very popular, it seems today, people only remember Etting of the three. Lot's of people also tend to think of the terrible squeeky voiced Helen Kane, who also was a competetor. There's no doubt Morse's voice could be VERY appealing, she sang the hit(torch song) "If You Want The Rainbow, You Must Have The Rain," in an intimate relaxed and very appealing rich voice. Then she'd turn around and sing "Don't Be Like That" the awful Helen Kane's(boop-boop-a-doop girl) theme. Morse doesn't reduce herself to singing in a child like voice she sings it in a very swinging style and she is about to win you over to liking her, then she let's out a loud not very lady like YODEL. Morse is definately a requitred taste, however if you can put up with her yodels every now & then, this cd is very rewarding, especially for the 1920's collector.

The sides on this cd from the 20's & 30's feature all Lee Morse & Her Bluegrass Boys(accept for the last track from 1952), well the Blues Grass Boys really are The Dorsey Brothers Orch, which features Eddie Lang, Joe Venuti, Bunny Barigan, Adrian Rollini and every other great white jazzmen of the era, and she let's them ALL solo, and they play in a dixieland-ish style, and Morse can swing ably along with them. Sometimes, especially in the later tracks her voice deepens so that she starts sounding a little too masculine, especially the last track from 1952.

Morse sounds best on songs like "Swinging In a Hammock" and "When I'm Cooking breakfast For The One I Love" (not included here)." From this cd the highlight is "It's The Girl" and her biggest hit "'Taint No Sin To Take Off Your Skin and Dance Around In Your Bones." Perhaps that's why jazz collectors and music historians are about 50/50 decided on weather they like her. She wasn't consistant in her style half the time she's a joy to hear, and the other she'd yodel or sing too harshly. However these sides are her best, and her backup band was exellent. I do recommend this cd, weather you really like her or not, she was a good singer at least soem of the time and she hada great backup all the time.

this cd overall is a lot of fun, and many love her yodeling, in fact sometimes she even scat sings, and her scatting will go into a yadel, she was truly unique and historically interseting, there are some great liner notes, and pictures(she was a KNOCKOUT), she truly was a great beauty from the cover aand inside pics, she didn't bob her hair like most flappers, she let it stay long, she was truly unique, and is worth remembering and listening to. Enjoy this fun cd. Theo nly cd by her that isn't a bootleg.
