Excellent Wagner, very good Brahms.......2006-02-21
To his admirers, Guido Cantelli was the heir apparent to Toscanini, who also saw him that way, inviting the charismatic young conductor to lead his NBC Sym. many times. EMI also picked Cantelli up for studio recordings like these two, a Siegfried Idyll from 1951 and Brahms First from 1953, now reissued by Testament.
Cantelli was a disciplined, intense musician but also a bit without personality. I can't tell his Brahms First from half a dozen others in the lean Toscanini-Szell style, though the finale is surprisingly slow and without tension. The best movements are the inner two, where Cantelli displays remarkable concentration in keeping the line moving with intensity and interest. The sonics are average for the period, a bit dim and boxy. I enjoyed the Siegfired Idyll more, a work I'm not particularly fond of. Cantelli's version, again in average sound, is light and songful, with nice touches of phrasing. In all, I felt about this CD what I feel about Cantelli in general, that as wonderful as he was, the intervening years have brought us many performances as good as those he made duing his short career.

A revelatory performance of Brahms' 3rd.......2007-05-17
I never "got" Brahms' 3rd symphony until I heard this performance. Since then, it has become my very favorite of the four Brahms symphonies. Most other conductors just don't seem to be able to "pull off" this symphony convincingly, and as a result, most listeners just don't think there's any "there" there. I was one such listener before hearing this performance. Cantelli's interpretation is stunning. It pulls together the entire work in a way that is not only unique but leaves you appreciating this as such a moving and important piece of music. I can't recommend this performance enough.

Classic Cantelli.......2003-09-16
Had Guido Cantelli not died in an airplane crash in 1956 at the tender age of 36, he would undoubtedly be known today as one of the world's most famous conductors. As is, collectors regard him as one of the greatest conductors of the 20th Century, and these vintage EMI recordings show why. This "References" title collects three of Cantelli's greatest performances with the Philharmonia Orchestra -- a 1953 mono performance of Schumann's 4th Symphony, a 1955 mono performance of Mendelssohn's "Italian" Symphony, and a 1955 stereo performance of Schubert's "Unfinished." Cantelli made a surprisingly large number of recordings for EMI in the early 1950s and most of them have been reissued at some point on CD (by both EMI and Testament), yet many of them are now out-of-print. Classical fans curious about Cantelli's considerable skills should pick up this title before it suffers a similar fate.

Customer Reviews:
From the review in Gramophone.......2006-12-28
"This is the third disc in Testament's very desirable series of Cantelli re-issues (a CD of Debussy and another of Brahms/Wagner have already been published). 'L'apprenti sorcier' is given an absolutely fantastic performance, with breathtaking playing from the Philharmonia. Cantelli was an exceedingly demanding conductor, and even in such a fiendishly difficult showpiece as this there is knife-edge precision and clarity in the playing, and the atmosphere is tense and exciting. Poor Dennis Brain was made to suffer in the 'Pavane' recording, for he had to repeat his horn solo time and time again before the young maestro was satisfied with the orchestra's performance. The playing is still immaculate, however, and Ravel's delicate inspiration is beautifully realized. The second 'Daphnis Suite' flowers exquisitely in Cantelli's hands, and the Falla pieces have an abundance of flair and colour. All these pieces have been made to yield excellent sound for recordings originally made between 1952 and 1956.
"The same cannot be said of the Santa Cecilia items, where the quality is a good few years behind the state of the art as it was in 1949. Nor is the orchestra a match for the Philharmonia. Nevertheless, these performances have only been issued on Italian 78s before now, and are important early examples of Cantelli's art which few will have heard. The Rossini overture has all the drive and excitement that one would expect, and Casella's 'Paganiniana' is very strongly played, too. This suite in four movements (sensibly written so as to fit perfectly on to two 78rpm records) is no masterpiece, but quite entertaining, and Cantelli admired it sufficiently to include it in his second concert with Toscanini's NBC Symphony Orchestra."

Customer Reviews:
A collection up to Cantelli's high standards.......2006-02-21
The notes to this Testament reissue speak of Cantelli in the following moods during the recording sessions: distraught, volatile, demanding, irritated, and frustrated. Not an easy customer. Because he died at 36 we'll never know if Cantelli might have grown out of the role of short-tempered little dictator, but in any case I rarely hear a smile in his conducting, and yet as with George Szell, who exhibited the same moods, Cantelli's recordings are often relaxed, even serene.
The main work here is a Mendelssohn 4th Sym. recorded by EMI in good mono sound in 1955. It's broader and less frenetic than the one by his mentor Toscanini and exhibits a lot of patience in phrasing the second movement and finale. I don't hear a lot of perosnality, but the playing is alive and musical in eery bar.
The opening item is a La Gazza Ladra Over. from 1952, in somewhat dimmer, boxy sound, which I expected to be fast and tense. It is, if not to Toscanini's degree, but Cantelli was good at high-energy perforamnces, as he is here. The last item is not complete. It consists of the last three movements of the Beethoven Fifth. Completion of the recording was halted because of construction noise next door to the studio. The date was May, 1956, and Cantelli died that November in a plane crash before he could return to London and lay down the first movement. The mono sound is quite good, if a bit distant. Tempos are the same as on classic recordings by Bernstein, Karajan, and Carlos Kleiber, and Cantelli's version is certainly comparable to theirs. In all, this is one of Testament's best reissues of EMI material that was out of print or, in the case of the Beethoven, never released to begin with.
