Chuck Mangione at his best.......2007-01-27
The atmosphere at the Hollywood Bowl was nice and cosy. And so was the music. And so is this 2 cdset. I enjoy at least three times a week!

Great!.......2007-01-09
Chuck Mangione has been a favorite of mine since high school. This CD brings back memories from the time when things were much less hectic... This is a perfect CD for many occasions, mostly anything to do with romance....
Simply the best!.......2006-12-10
I first bought this on vinyl in 1979. It was magic then, and is still magic today. Back when I was 17, I was spending a summer in Tucson with my grandparents, and that's when I bought this LP. I played it over and over on their old cabinet-size stereo. Later, I would listen to it on my home stereo turned up to "11", and I was mezmerized by the lush strings and soaring horn section. Chuck's improvisations escaped my meager abilities on the trumpet in high-school, but I could hum them from memory all day long. The rest of the band is truly at the top of their game, as well. Grant Geissman's solo on "Chase The Clouds Away" is simply the best guitar solo of any genre in the history of music. Charles Meeks, James Bradley, Jr., and Chris Vadala give the performances of a lifetime. My favorite track is "I Get Crazy". It's short, but powerful. The layered ending comes to an abrupt, but spectacular end in a great sixteenth note run. There are no bad tracks or "skip-overs" here. "B'Bye" is a great expression of mourning and loss sandwiched between two movements of a towering "Children Of Sanchez". The album cover photos clearly show the sheet music to "Legend Of The One-Eyes Sailor" and I wish that this work had not ended up on the edit room floor. Maybe the powers-that-be will add the original set tunes back and release a full picture of this concert, warts and all (provided there are any warts, which I doubt). On the other hand, this was a 2 night event, so even with some editing, both shows could be brought together with all of the tunes included.
Over the years, I've probably listened to this album in some form or another probably 1000 or more times. It's the only recording I have on vinyl, cassette tape (remember those?) and CD. Now I play it over and over on my iPod, and on my computer thru iTunes. Funny how the tech has changed over the years, but you still keep coming back to the music that set your soul ablaze. Mick Guzauski, Jeff Tkazyik, and Chuck knew what they were doing when they sat down in the studio and mixed this album. The strings are rich and warm, the horn section is balanced and soaring, and the quartet sounds like they're in your room with you. If this didn't win the Grammy for sound editing, then I envy whatever recording did.
6 out of 5 stars.
You are there!.......2006-05-08
All of the previous reviews will tell you that this is a great concert album. For me, this is one of those albums that fully blooms when listened to on good quality headphones - ones that completely shut out all outside noise and give high quality sound. When you experience this album in a pure environment, you literally feel as if you are in the middle of the stage on a cool summer evening in Los Angeles - true "surround sound". Having grown up there and attended many concerts at the Hollywood Bowl, I can say that this album evokes the experience like none other that I have heard. So put on your headphones, close your eyes, and enjoy the trip!
Mangione On Fire.......2006-03-29
Recently, while looking here on amazon to see if Main Squeeze had yet been re-mastered and reissued, I encountered An Evening of Magic. I don't know why I did not already have this on vinyl. Perhaps I ignored it when it was released because I was justifiably leery of "live" recordings and then subsequently just forgot about it. Anyhow, when I saw that the entire Main Squeeze album was on this CD, I ordered it, Main Squeeze itself being unavailable at any reasonable price. And as it turns out, I was really missing out on some great music all these years.
An Evening of Magic features a live performance of Chuck Mangione with his quartet and the LA Philharmonic at the peak of his popularity. Mangione is absolutely on fire, its clear that he came to play. After one listen, all my reservations about how he would sound on a live album melted away. This is indeed Chuck Mangione at his finest.
Though the whole CD is excellent, I do have some favorite cuts. Highlights are a dreamy Chase the Clouds Away, the romantic Doin' Everything With You, the brassy Love The Feelin', the dramatic I Get Crazy, the mellow classic Land of Make Believe, the relaxing The Day After (Our First Night Together), and two movements of Mangione's rousing Children of Sanchez.
If you are as leery of "live" recordings as I usually am, you needn't be with this one. An Evening of Magic, Live at the Hollywood Bowl is one live recording that belongs in every jazz lover's collection.

Queen pull a classic lost gem from the vaults.......2006-01-30
In November of 2004, Queen released its fourth live album Queen On Fire Live at the Bowl.
This live recording and its off-shoot DVD was recorded and filmed at The Milton Keynes Bowl outside London, England on June 5, 1982.
Not officially released on video or CD, Queen On Fire Live At The Bowl marked the first time a recording of this concert has been LEGITIMATELY available to own as a 70 or 80 minute edit had been available on the bootleg recording circuit.
Audio producers Justin Shirley-Smith and Kris Fredriksson returned to the original 24 track analog tapes recorded by 80s Queen co-producer Mack and Mick McKenna with The Rolling Stones Mobile Truck and created brand new regular stereo(for this CD and one of the two DVD mixes)) and DTS 5.1 surround sound mixes(found on the DVD).
We kick off as the band hits the stage with the entrance music of Flash before the band dives into a spirited version of The Hero. Next is a killer We Will Rock You (fast version) complete with Brian May popping a guitar string and the music was left alone. Next is Action This Daywith drummer Roger Taylor and Freddie Mercury duetting on this rocker and John Deacon adding some bass which was muted on the studio recording and Brian playing his Red Special backup as his Red Special had to get a new string and Morgan Fisher did a great synthesizer solo substituting for the saxophone solo. Then Freddie does a nice piano intro which goes into an excellent Play the Game. Next is another Hot Space track Staying Power which is transformed into a rocker with Deaky and May playing guitars plus Roger bashing live drums and Freddie being on fire here. Next is arguably this live set's best track Somebody To Love which buries its studio counterpart by a longshot. Next is Now I'm Here which is excellent with a Freddie/audience vocal duel before segueing into Dragon Attack which rocks although Brian blew yet another string on his Red Special guitar and had to use his Red Special back up for the finale solo and the reprise to Now I'm Here. Next is a nice version of Love of My Life with Brian playing an impromptu teaser of Las Palabras De Amor before starting the track. Save Me is next and is done with more power than the studio counterpart. Deaky's Back Chat ends the first CD as the funk track is turned into a full-on rocker with Roger playing the drums like a man possessed, Brian's guitar dominating, John playing his Music Man Stingray bass and Freddie singing his heart out.
The second CD begins with Get Down Make Love which is a great short version which then segues from its middle section into Brian's Guitar Solo which is amazing despite the fact his guitar cord came undone(you can see this on DVD unedited) and Brian finishes with some help from Roger's drumming. Roger does an uncredited 30 second Drum Solo at the end of the guitar solo track as a lead in to Under Pressure which is an excellent version of the track. Next is Fat Bottomed Girls which rocks and Freddie's voice was electronically fixed on the part where he says LOCALITY which his voice cracked on the original Milton Keynes BBC airing. We then have a rocking Crazy Little Thing Called Love which is great. Then we have Freddie play a nice piano solo leading into possibly the best live version of Bohemian Rhapsody ever. We then rock out with the set closing Tie Your Mother Down which rocks. The first encore of Another One Bites the Dust is a great spirited version. Sheer Heart Attack follows and is more aggresive than either the News of the World version or the Live Killers version. We then have the second encore of the traditional We Will Rock You with audience participating and a stellar We Are the Champions. We then have the band say farewell as God Save the Queen plays over the PA.
Despite the fact this album didn't chart upon its late 2004 release, this live album is a FANTASTIC snapshot of Queen reigning their natural habitat, the concert stage and is one of my Top 5 favorite live albums EVER!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
An earlier GREAT performance by Queen.......2005-12-17
There's quite a few live recordings out there by Queen. This is one of the most rare kind though from the 1982 era when the commercial failure "Hot Space" was released. Although the album was a failure, Queen was still awesome. The recording is just amazing and Freddie, Brian, John and Roger seem to play the music with ten times more the energy than they ever had. They played some of the music from "Flash Gordon" at the beginning. Some of the other highlights include their very fast tempo performances of "We will rock you", "Action this day" which is a MASSIVELY underrated song, and "Staying Power" which also sounds great in concert. The recording is just amazing, like any other Queen concert.
one of my favorites.......2005-11-27
It's hard for me to say which live queen album is my favorite, I love wembly, live killer's is also good, but i think "live at the bowl" is my favorite. Freddie's voice is perfect and also are brian and roger. this could be my all time favorite live album, slightly ahead of "wembly" and judas priest's "unleash in the east"

Ignore the Track List Above:.......2005-10-25
This album is the only Doors live album I've listened too but at
23 minutes, don't waste your money. It's not really bad or anything, just really short. There's only 7 songs, but two are excerpts from a Jim Morrison poem called "The Celebration of the Lizard" one is an edit of Light My Fire and another is a shorter version of "Spanish Caravan." Here's the tracks, but please buy a different live album:
1. Wake Up-No Grade-A Poem?
2. Light My Fire-4/5-Pretty good version of it. Personally, this song has never been one of my favorites though.
3. Unknown Soldier-4/5-Was Morrison drunk when he sang this version? Probably, but whatver. This version is OK.
4. A Little Game-5/5-The first of two excerpts from "The Celebration of the Lizard". The beat is haunting, the lyrics are good.
5. The Hill Dwellers-2/5-Shut up! I love Jim Morrison and I love the line "daughters smug with s*men eyes in their nipples." but this is just a really boring ramble.
6. Spanish Caravan-4/5-I love this song and this version is good; although it would be better if they hadn't started at the second verse.
7. Light My Fire (Edit of Live Version)-4/5-Literally just an edit of track number 2. I feel the same way about this one as I did the previous one.

The essence of a great entertainer catpured........2004-05-03
Liberace was a great showman and entertainer. This double CD is the best record of his classic act and demonstrates what Liberace was all about. Although recorded in 1954 the sound quality is fine and many of the elements from that period remained part of Liberace's act over more than 30 years. Interestingly - he was not yet using "I'll Be Seeing You" as his exit music. If there is anything you like about Liberace - get this CD.
NB Amazon (on 2/5/04) was only listing the tracks on the second CD.

Amen Omen alone is worth the price of admission.......2005-10-25
This is a fine and tantalizing sample of Ben Harper's live performance at Hollywood Bowl and as with most great EPs it is much too short! This is definitely a gem to add to any Ben Harper collection. Like other reviewers I liked two of the four songs more than the other two (but not neccessarily the same two), and that's why this EP gets four stars. I'll give a song by song run down:
Brown Eyed Blues: mellow, relaxed and fun. A good version. The only problem is that this is not one of my favorite Harper songs.
With My Own Two Hands: Awesome! The medley with war in the middle is very effective and a bit chilling. There is a very nice guitar / keyboard "duet" between the first Two Hands section and War. Played loud this song rocks! Definitely my favortie version.
Sexual Healing: Another reviewer called this song boring. I wouldn't go that far, since it does have some steam to it. But as was also pointed out, it is redundant. This track was on Live From Mars and this version is no better, worse or different from that one. So it doesn't add a lot to your collection.
Amen Omen: This is the absolute best song on the EP. Here's how good it is: Amen Omen was one of my least favorite songs on Diamonds, but this version is one of my favorite Harper songs of all time! His voice has so much emotion that the words penetrate the soul. And the guitar work, wow! This song alone is worth the price of admission.
Good EP.......2004-09-17
Ok, I'll start out by telling you that if you have never heard Ben play his music live then you are missing out just as much as someone that has never seen DMB play live. Ok, so why did I give it just 4 stars? Well, I don't really like 2 of the songs on it. I love almost everything that Ben has ever written, but I don't like "With my own two hands" and "Sexual Healing" is not on my top 20 songs of his. Now remember, I DID give 4. Trust all of our online reviews, "Amen Omen" could not have been recorded and performed better. At a point Ben holds a note and the band stops as Ben shows us how talented of a vocalist he is (it's BEAUTIFUL). Last of all, "Brown Eyed Blues" has more soul to it in this recording than could even be imagined (the studio version was good, but this live version could put it in my top 10 list). Very good, well worth you money.
too short, worth buying for 2/4 songs.......2004-02-09
very good version of with my own two hands/war. end of amen omen is awesome. sexual healing is boring and redundant with live from mars. brown eyed blues was a dissapointment compared to the album version. wish there was more songs from the concert on the CD.
Good Stuff.......2004-01-05
This little EP is the audio version of some of the tracks off of Ben's newest live DVD "Live At The Hollywood Bowl", and is definitely worth checking into if you enjoyed the Live On Mars album.
What's great about this is that it lets us hear some live performances of songs that come off of Ben's most recent album which came out after the last live offering. It's fun to hear the extended live cuts of the tracks which have a lot more dynamics and life to them than can be found on the album, particularly "Amen Omen" which is absolutely tremendous here and alone is worth your money.
This is a great little EP, and really makes me hope that there is another live full-length in the works. The only thing holding this back is that I wish there were more tracks on it that we haven't heard a live recording of before, but then again this is just an EP and you can find those tracks on the DVD.
Definitely worth picking up, and reminds us once again of why we all love Ben so much. He's such an amazing performer.

The Young Lanza impresses.......2007-04-11
I am a singer and have been a Mario Lanza fan since becoming interested in opera in my teens. The quality of his singing varied a great deal, especially in his later years. But this Hollywood Bowl concert, at age 26, shows him with a freshness and ease of production that failed him later in life. Highlights for me were the Boheme Duet - I don't know of any of the current tenor stars who would dare to hold the High A for so long and then jump right to the High C and be able to sustain it. The Andrea Chenier demonstrates his spinto side and the beauty of his middle and lower voice. One weeps for what might have been. But I will put this recording against Mr. Alagna any day of the week.
A Rare Find!.......2002-12-19
The "Live From London" is my favorite cd and this is a close second. I usually listen to the Bowl selections only and save the Coca-Cola radio program for another time. The recording quality is not the best, but this is a wonderful sourvenir of the young singer in excellent voice and delivery at the begining of his career. The selections with soprano Frances Yeend are a wonderful addition since there are few recorded "live concert" Lanza duets available outside of this venue (there are recordings of his later Bowl appearances you may want to check out). Mario's introductions show his warmth and humor. It was at this concert that MGM took notice and his career moved to the movie studios. We are fortunate to have this recording. One of the highlights of the Coke show program is Mario's introduction to the "Our Father". Disregard the liner notes. For value delivered, this cd rates five stars!
One of the great performances of all time.......2002-05-12
The first six tracks of this CD capture Mario Lanza's legendary 1947 Hollywood Bowl debut. These recordings, by themselves, would rate 7 stars in my book. (The rest of the CD would probably merit about 2 stars, but those live tracks are worth the ridiculously low price of this collection many times over.) Renowned baritone George London, Lanza's frequent singing partner, later said he never heard Mario sing better than he did that night, and it would be hard to disagree with him. Lanza, on the eve of signing his contract with MGM, was at the peak of his vocal discipline, fresh off 15 months of training with Enrico Rosati. And while his interpretive abilities may have not reached their full potential, then or ever, the voice itself was magnificent: brilliant, rich and indescribably glorious. The concert opens with "Una furtiva lagrima," by Donizetti, which, if somewhat raw, is certainly more refined and lyrical than his later studio recording. His phrasing of "Cielo, si puo morir" can bring tears to my eyes. Next up is a thrilling rendition of "Un di all'azzuro spazio" from ANDREA CHENIER. Lanza's performance of this aria is as good as any I've ever heard, including Caruso's. He positively caresses the phrase "Su dalla terra a la mia fronte veniva una ca'rezza viva," then passionately spits out the aria's middle section: "un uom vi calunniave bestemmiando il suolo che l'erario a pena sazia e contro a Dio scagliava, e contro a li uomini le lagrime dei figli!" Lanza's vocal tone, in this performance, was more focused than it was in his later recording of this aria, and his later recordings in general, and the effect is very impressive to those who have only heard his studio recordings. Then, for an encore, he sings "E lucevan le stelle," from TOSCA by Puccini, another aria which, in my opinion, Lanza sang as well if not better than anyone. True, he does not sing the pianissimo like Gigli or Di Stefano, but then neither did Caruso or Domingo. In fact, to my way of thinking Lanza's interpretation is more in character with a man who is about to die: it is not a simple love song but a cry of desperation. Next come three gorgeous duets with Frances Yeend, a singer with limited interpretive abilities but a rich, full voice. On the duet from LA TRAVIATA, Lanza showcases a wonderful legato line, and the timing of the two singers is nearly perfect. By this time in the concert, Lanza's voice had reached its peak of richness and beauty. The love duet from MADAME BUTTERFLY that follows is a positive tour de force: I have never heard a more exciting and musical performance: neither singer allows interpretation to get in the way of the melody, which is always a good idea with Puccini. Lanza is at his most passionate here, and his high C at the end is devastating. Yeend would later say that Lanza's singing was "Always thrilling. . .he never spared the horses," and this duet is a good example. Finally, a tasteful and lovely rendition of the duet from LA BOHEME closes out the show, with the richness of each singer's voice on full display. Lanza sings the line "Dammi il braccio mia piccina" as romantically as anyone, and the interplay between the two singers is nearly perfect. This is a performance for the ages: anyone who loves Italian opera and especially great tenor singing should love this album. The rest of the album is pretty much a waste, except for an interesting version of "A Vuchella" in which Lanza does his best Gigli impression. Notably, this album contains possibly the worst version of any song I have ever heard: an English language rendition of "Funiculi funicula" that is positively dreadful, although you can't really blame that on Lanza's singing.
Buy this for the first six tracks only!.......2001-08-22
This CD contains both the very best and the very worst of the vastly underrated Mario Lanza. First things first, ignore the absurdly inaccurate liner notes. Lanza did NOT have a small voice - indeed fellow musicians who sang with him often remarked that it was a huge and powerful instrument. Lanza's voice did not "crack down" in his last years, as the liner notes writer asserts; rather it was his health that "cracked down" in the final year of his life.
These recordings, however, demonstrate the tenor in the full bloom of health. The outstanding selections are tracks 1-6, which come from his extraordinary Hollywood Bowl debut in 1947. You'll never hear a better Lanza rendition of the Madama Butterfly Love Duet (with soprano Frances Yeend) than the one included here. This is sensitive AND passionate singing of the highest order, and listening to this rendition today it is not surprising that MGM signed the tenor up for a movie career the very next day. All six selections are outstanding, and many will be surprised by the beautiful legato Lanza employs in the difficult Parigi, O Cara from La Traviata.
The six initial tracks are more than worth the price of the CD, and make up for the shortcomings of the remaining selections, all of which come from Lanza's Coca-Cola radio show of 1951-52. The latter tracks show the tenor at his commercial worst. Diane is an abomination, and there are several other selections that should never have seen the light of day. Fortunately, however, there are a few nuggets among the dross, and "If" is a most attractive and exciting performance.
The sound is not brilliant on the Coke Show selections (these are not the pristine BMG recordings, and all come with overlaid applause tracks). Ironically, the live Hollywood Bowl selections have much better sound.
But don't let the "Coke" numbers put you off buying this CD. The Hollywood Bowl concert is a masterpiece, and should be required listening for all who scoff at this "movie tenor".

Customer Reviews:
Rubinstein recorded live in 1949.......2006-12-31
It's nice to hear Rubinstein playing Rachmaninoff in a live performance. Before an audience, he was much more the fiery, volatile artist than he was on recordings.
Surprising is the interpretive change that takes place in this concerto. Temperament rises audibly, with Rubinstein kindling hotter flames in the dramatic moments, greater warmth and lingering over lyrical moments, and a greater degree of uncertainty over what is going to happen next. As much as Rubinstein tries to speed away, he is just as often hanging back, shaping the music with a liquid suppleness and never-ending variety of phrasings, making this concerto more unsettled and riveting than usual.
Unfortunately, the orchestra playing is very messy, and the balance is bad. Rubinstein often rushes ahead, it almost seems that Koussevitsky couldn't follow him.
The three encores are typical Rubinstein, a Chopin walz, the Prokoviev March and the Ritual Fire Dance by de Falla. Very nice to hear the announcement Rubinstein makes before the last encore: 'I've been asked to play the Fire Dance again`.
