CD set is misnamed.......2007-06-08

They should have titled this "classical music for people who love classical music" because most of the selections are typical classical music. The title suggests it would be lively selections of "light classical" music that is more upbeat, i.e. Sabre Dance, etc. I really don't hate classical music at all and have many classical CDs in my collection but I really wanted to hear more exciting selections. I won't be purchasing any more of this set but if you like traditional classical music these are good one.

I do know it says classical music for people who hate it, but serioulsly you would have better luck never listening to classical music again. The recordings are awfull and do not do justice to any of the composers. Buy something else.

Classical Music for People Who Hate Classical Music.......2007-01-30

We love this set of CD's. I just got a new copy because my kids keeping taking our first copy with them so that they can listen at work or in their bedrooms but then I can never find them.

Seek better versions.......2006-12-09

If you are fairly new to classical purchases then compilation CD's can be useful for deciding what to buy next. Sometimes you only need a small taste of a piece to inspire you to buy a release with the whole performance on. The problem with this compilation however is that most of the versions are poor in performance or recording quality (or both) when compared to the best versions and the fact that the conductors aren't even credited on the track listing made me suspect that this would be the case. One of my favorite classical pieces is Tchaikovsky's 1812 festival overture but if the first CD version I had heard had been the finale excerpt that is on this compilation I may not have gone on to buy the whole thing. Luckily I heard Adrian Leaper's version first and Adrian's version is rather good.
My classical CD buying experience is limited to only a couple of dozen discs but I have found that the Naxos and Deutshe Grammophon releases are fairly safe. Avoid any release which does not name the conductors on the track listing or sleeve notes.

It Is What It Is.......2006-10-27

It's fitting that this page is fraught with the same kind of silly snobbery that turns people off from classical music (and necessitates collections like this) in the first place.

Any criticism of this compilation, which focuses on the quality of the performances or the fact that many tracks are excerpts, misses the point. This is not a collection for people who consider such things, nor does it purport to be. The idea is to package as many ultra-famous classical melodies as possible in one affordable collection and market it to people who have never purchased a classical recording. As such, top-tier performances are likely too expensive to be sold so cheaply and are unnecessary anyway. Those of us who already know and love a piece or two can forgive the compilers the inclusion of sub-par recordings, when we are exposed to so many other beautiful pieces for the first time.

It probably comes as a shock for some to hear that most people are not familiar with these classics. We may hear snippets on TV or movies, but are left with no idea as to the composer or historical context. With that in mind, it is extremely intimidating to begin buying classical. I suppose those among us, who so thoroughly dismissed the very notion of a boxed set like this, would have us begin by buying full albums by reputable interpreters. Surprisingly enough though, the majority of people would consider that a tad cost-prohibitive.

To conclude, this is a STARTER collection. It will either affirm a listener's feelings about classical music or lead to an interest in purchasing better recordings. Ideally, I suppose the interpretations would be better, but, for reasons mentioned above, that just isn't in the cards for a collection of this nature. If you're familiar with 50 different recordings of "The Ring" series, or have season tickets to the New York Philharmonic, then this probably isn't for you. For us cretins with limited foreknowledge of classical music though, it serves as a succinct introduction with little to complain about.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

A Fabulous CD.......2004-10-14

The Idiot's Guide to Calssical Music is an awesome Cd for those people who want to have a tiny sample of all the great classical compositions. Track 61 and 63 are my favorite.

Mega-Sampler! This really does have 99 tracks!.......2002-03-20

Yes, this CD really does have 99 tracks. How do they do it? Each is about a minuet long. Some are longer, some are shorter, but you get the micro-essential moments of the music.

If you like burning your own CDs, then this is a great source for intra-track fillers, along the lines of They Might Be Giants' "Apollo 18" album, which has all of those short tracks on the end. The idea is to put your CD player on shuffle, so the short tracks get mixed in with the bona fide songs. The result being a very unusual album.

The booklet gives an explanation of the track, where you heard it (i.e. the Warner Brother's Cartoons, or on famous films), and where you can get the full piece of music. So it's a mega sampler CD.

I can honestly say that this CD is a great gift for the friend who has everything.

Take it for what it is, a clever and useful GUIDE to classical music. No, it is NOT an uncut rendition of Beethoven's 9th symphony. It IS a cd that will jog your memory. You have heard many of the tunes presented here, but not always knowing what the work was. This is your chance to catch up with all the great classical music you have been exposed to. Cheap too.

I loved the other two discs and now the last installment of Opus 18.

I have the Takacs sets of all Beethoven's string Quartets. I don't know if the Mosaiques' discs are actually better than the Takacs' Opus 18. But I like this recording better. Both are highly recommended

Finally, the Completion of the Quatuor Mosaïques' Op. 18 Set!.......2007-05-11

This review won't take long. I've already written reviews of the Quatuor Mosaïques' two earlier releases of the Op. 18 set -- you can go to those reviews by clicking on these links: Beethoven: String Quartets Opus 18 Nos 1 & 4 /Quatuor Mosaiques & Beethoven: String Quartets Opus 18 Nos. 5 & 6 -- and I raved, nay exulted, about them. Same here. I believe these have become my favorite recordings of these delicious Opus 18 quartets. There is something about the sound of the Quatuor Mosaïques that speaks to me like none other. Their sound almost makes that of modern instrument recordings sound wrong. (See my earlier reviews where I try to explain what I mean by this.) This may be an idiosyncratic response on my part, but there you are.

I assume that Naïve may ultimately issue these three CDs in a box set but I've heard of no such plans. Meanwhile, I hope that Quatuor Mosaïques continues with Beethoven, at least as far as the Op. 59 quartets. Perhaps their sound wouldn't be so appropriate for the quartets that come after that but I'd love to hear them in the Rasumovsky set.

A most urgent recommendation.

Superb Early Beethoven Quartets.......2005-06-28

I don't quite understand how this happens, but these performances of two of Beethoven's early quartets done by Quatuor Mosaïques on gut-strung instruments from the 17th and 18th centuries somehow sound more modern, more advanced than when played on modern instruments. One is used to hearing them played by modern-instrument quartets like the Emerson or the Takács Quartets and they sound quaint, Haydnesque, classical. In the present performances they sound dramatic, forward-looking and proto-Romantic. And, might I add, much more interesting. Obviously that is partly because Quatuor Mosaïques is a superb ensemble, but then so are the Emerson and the Takács. So, how to explain it? I think it has something to do with the SOUND of the instruments, softer, more rounded, more subtle, that is inherently more romantic in timbre than the clear-as-a-bell and almost clinical sound of 'modern' instruments. Whatever the explanation, these performances are, for me, revelatory.

Added to that is the discovery that pairing Op. 18, No. 1 with Op. 18, No. 4 points out their contrasts neatly. No. 1 is nominally in a major key (F major), No. 4 in minor (C minor). But No. 1 has a minor key movement (the Adagio affettuoso ed appassionato), No. 4 has one in the major (the Andante scherzoso). Beethoven's sketchbooks reveal that he labored long and hard on the No. 1 -- there are a total of fifteen pages devoted to polishing the little one-measure theme of Mvt. I and its working out. But there are no sketches at all for No. 4; it's as if Beethoven had written it out in a flash, like Mozart had done with so many of his works. Yet, No. 1 sounds like a brilliant improvisation and No. 4 has such a complex form and working out that it sounds like the end result of complicated effort on Beethoven's part. A paradox, a paradox.

These performances are simply superb. I have not generally been a fan of original instrument string quartet performances, at least in the early days, but the Quatuor Mosaïques seems head and shoulders above other similar groups. The members -- violins Erich Höbarth and Andrea Bischof, viola Anita Mitterer, and cello Christophe Coin -- met when they were all members of Nikolaus Harnoncourt's Concentus Musicus Wien, forming the quartet in 1989. They have risen to the top of their original-instrument category and indeed are among the finest quartets currently before the public. Their tuning is nigh perfect as is their ensemble. They play as one, and their musicianship is impeccable. They have been afforded lifelike sound by recording engineer Philip Nedel and producers Hervé Boissière and Helmut Muhle. Recorded in the Grafenegg Schloss 'Alte Reitschule' in Austria, the surround ambience gives them a natural aura.

They have already recorded the other four quartets of Op. 18, and I have Nos. 4 & 6 in my review queue. I have not acquired Nos. 2 and 3, but undoubtedly, because of the quality of this disc, will do so.

Urgently recomended, even to those who have multiple recordings of these quartets.

Incredibly Beautiful Sublime Musicianship.......2005-11-18

I have listened to CDs of Beethoven's quartets by four different groups: Alban Berg, Julliard, Kodaly, and Cleveland. They are all excellent. However, if the other quartets all deserve five stars out of five, then the Cleveland Quartet deserves a sixth star. All four groups play together seamlessly and capture all of the energy and passion of Beethoven, but the Cleveland Quartet also has an extra touch of lyrical magic and smooth refinement in the quality of their performance. The musicians perform with an elegance as smooth as silk, while also capturing liveliness of the quartets' allegro movements.

I have listened to this CD many times and thoroughly enjoyed it every time. In the allegro movements there is a wonderful interaction between the violins playing the melody and the cello that is providing such a strong rhythm, anchoring the melody while, at the same time, playing in opposition to it; both instruments are very distinct and play both with and against each other in a perfect blend of harmony and, in the more rapid passages, a flawless tension that beautifully conveys the passion and energy in the music.

The sound quality of this digital recording is superbly clear, rich, and full, and evokes for me the impression of highly polished wood, like the wood of the superb instruments played by these incredibly talented musicians: William Preucil plays a Stradivarious violin from 1701; Peter Salaff, a J.B. Guadegnini violin from 1783; James Dunham, a Gaspar da Salo viola from 1585; and Paul Katz, an Andrea Guarneri cello from 1669.

The CD booklet is well-written and informative, with a lengthy, detailed essay on each of the two quartets on this CD, in English with German and French translations, followed by a separate essay (only in English) on the Cleveland String Quartet. The CD booklet even includes on the final page some very detailed technical information regarding the microphones, console, digital recording processor, microphone & interconnecting cables, monitor speakers, power amplifiers, and even the control room acoustic treatement and digital editing. Given the exceptional quality of the sound engineering on this CD, as with the vast majority of Telarc CDs, the detailed technical information is understandable. Surely, everyone involved in making this outstanding recording, from the musicians to the sound engineers, had every reason to be proud of this accomplishment. Out of several hundred classical music CD's, I would select the Cleveland Quartet's recordings of all of the Beethoven Quartets, including these two late quartets, as amongst my very best, "desert island" CDs. This CD has my highest recommendation. Time = 64:14.

More Exceptional Early Beethoven by the Quatuor Mosaïques.......2005-06-29

Many lovers of Beethoven's string quartets tend to focus on the mature middle-period quartets and the ground-breaking late quartets, ignoring to some extent the six quartets the composer wrote before 1800, his Op. 18 set. Some feel that they are simply extensions of Haydn's or Mozart's art and not worthy of as much attention as the later more 'Beethovenian' works. To some extent, one supposes, this is true, but these six quartets repay close scrutiny in their own right. Quatuor Mosaïques, an original instrument quartet using gut-strung instruments actually made in the 17th and 18th centuries, has recently made an addition (Quartets 1 & 4) to their traversal of the set begun in the early 1990s. The present disc containing Quartets Nos. 5 & 6 were originally recorded in 1994 and issued on the Astrée label. They are now released as a companion to the new recording, which I recently reviewed here. There is no explanation for the ten year gap between the present recording and that of Nos 1 & 4 which were recorded in 2004. And there is no word about when, or if, they will be recording Quartets No. 2 & 3. One hopes they will do so, though, because the two discs already issued are very worthy additions to the huge Beethoven quartet discography. In my review of Quartets 1 & 4 I suggested that that recording is a must-have for musiclovers who already have multiple recordings of those quartets, largely because of their 'new' take on the works. The same holds true for this CD as well. Quatuor Mosaïques is, simply put, the best original instrument quartet currently playing. The sounds they make are indescribably gorgeous. They use a modicum of vibrato, but much less than is typical for modern-instrument groups. The sound produced by gut strings paradoxically gives these quartets a more 'modern' (or perhaps I mean 'Romantic') sound than those on modern metal strings. The sweetness and depth of their sound must be experienced to be understood.

As for Quartets Nos. 5 and 6, they are extremely well-known works and I won't go into much description of the music itself. For me there are some passages that never fail to engage me. In Quartet No. 5 alone: the accents on the third beat that recur incessantly in the trio of the Menuetto; the unexpected chromaticism of the quartet, particularly in a couple of the variations in Mvt. III; the chordal second theme of the Allegro finale, the formal reminiscences of Mozart's A major quartet, K. 464. There is plenty to delight here. The same is true of the final quartet of the set. I am always affected by the contrast between the almost trivial-sounding madcap Mvt. III followed by the last movement, subtitled 'La malinconia.' Beethoven marked the Adagio introduction to the movement 'Questo pezzo si deve trattare colla più gran delicatezza' ['This piece must be played with greatest delicacy'], which Quatuor Mosaïques does movingly. Their subtlety here reminds me of the sound of the great Busch Quartet Beethoven quartet recordings from the 1930s.

This disc is a must-have for those who already think they know the Op. 18 quartets. And a first-time buyer of these quartets would not go wrong here, either.

Interesting, and so cheap!.......2005-03-17

In response to the reviewer below, yes, some of the recordings do not have the best sound quality. But that's not what this is about, it's about great recordings of the century.
There are two discs, each with about 18 tracks, averaging about 4 minutes each, of excerpts and individual movements of the some of the most famous of the 150 "GROCs."

In the booklet it has a few interesting (sometimes not that interesting) facts about each of the 150 performances.

If you don't mind excerpts of pieces or isolated movements, this would be a worthwhile purchase, especially for the bizarrely reasonable price.

If this is supposed to be an album of "the greatest" -- I wasn't too impressed. The quality didn't seem that good and the selections, well, not all that popular to my mind.
